These are the foundations of a resilient mind. Accept what is: Life won't always go your way. Acceptance doesn't mean giving up; it means dealing with the truth without resistance. Only then can you change what you can. Release what was: You can't rewrite the past. You can only rewrite your response to it. Let go of regrets, grudges, and guilt. They don't serve you. Trust in what will be: Fear of the future steals today's peace. Trust that things are unfolding in your favor. Have faith in the process — even if you don't see all the steps yet.Check us out - Instagram and Twitter: JeroldJax Facebook: Jerold Action Jackson and Zone Of Action JeroldJackson.com Happiness starts with you. The Learning Leader Show with Ryan Hawk Go to www.LearningLeader.com for full show notes This is brought to you by Insight Global. If you need to hire 1 person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world have the hustle and grit to deliver. www.InsightGlobal.com/LearningLeader Tom Ryan is the head wrestling coach at Ohio State University. In college, he wrestled for perhaps the greatest wrestling coach of all time, Dan Gable, at Iowa, where he was a two-time Big Ten champion and a two-time NCAA All-American. As a coach at Ohio State, he's won numerous national coach of the year honors, has coached more than 75 All-Americans, and led the Buckeyes to a national championship in 2015. We filmed this in his office in Columbus, OH, after spending the morning watching some of his championship wrestlers practice. It was one of the coolest days I've had in a long time. Notes: “My first workout after driving from Syracuse to Iowa was a soul-cleanser. I collapsed in my car outside the arena. I couldn't stop crying.” "It was a line in the sand moment for me. Where are you going or staying? Because I could have turned around, I could have went right back. But it was this sense of knowing that you were in the right place." It's amazing that Tom decided to leave Syracuse with no guarantee of even making the team at Iowa, let alone a scholarship. He shows up on day 1, and Coach Gable didn't even know who he was! Crazy. And then he goes on to earn his spot and become an All-American. Competitive Spirit from Early Age: "There's certainly an element of competitive spirit... even in second grade, we were on the playground... if you lose, you're fighting somebody. You just wanna win, you wanna win everything you do." Why go to Iowa? The Will to Be Great – "I wanted to be elite at something. And by trial and error, it was almost trial and error... I wasn't gonna end my career with not knowing how high I could climb." Key Learnings from Dan Gable: Emotional Control – "He wasn't a yeller. He wasn't a screamer... The reason why he didn't need to yell was his competence." Focus on Situation, Not Person – "It was never personal... He would focus on the situation and not you as a person. You never felt attacked. It was just bluntly, your single leg needs improvement." Balance of Freedom and Accountability – "Too much freedom. Not good... You can drive someone crazy with discipline and rituals and rules... It's just this happy medium." One of the most emotional moments in my 10+ years of recording this podcast, Tom shared the story of the day his 5-year-old son, Teague, had a heart attack and tragically passed away. The room went silent. And Tom went deep into the impact that it has had on him and his family. This is something I cannot imagine happening. I am grateful that Tom was willing to share and be so vulnerable. I love Tom Ryan, and I am lucky to have been in Columbus with him. The interview with Ohio State: "I wasn't their first choice... But ultimately, I was a leader that had learned. I learned under the best." He prepared extensively, attacked his weaknesses proactively, and wasn't afraid to discuss his faith. Chosen vs. Unchosen Suffering – The concept of "chosen suffering" came after experiencing unchosen suffering (losing Teague). "Wrestling has never brought me to my knees... I never got there in wrestling... but when I lost Teague in 2004, that I referred to as unchosen suffering." Chosen Suffering = Deep Love – "Chosen suffering is a fancy word for love because you will suffer the most for the things you love the most." The willingness to endure difficulty stems from profound love for what you're pursuing. Traits of Elite Performers: Ungodly Effort – "In all studies ever performed on elite behavior... one is an ungodly effort. And I think effort stems from... effort over time is a byproduct of deep love." High Capacity to Learn – Elite athletes have exceptional skill development abilities Living in Truth – "The capacity to live in truth. To really be honest with yourself and be okay with it... really strong self-assessment." Daily Discipline – "The discipline to do it daily... to work on your shortcomings and really be good enough to look in the mirror and say, I love you, but you got some problems." Being Coachable – "Most people wanna be coached until they're getting coached." Great performers actively seek feedback, while good ones want to be left alone. Three-Pronged Leadership Philosophy: Example – Walk the walk and display the behaviors you want to see Truth in Love – "Too much truth can demoralize someone... too much love, you're patronizing me. Stop it. Gimme the truth." Embracing Pain and Suffering – "We're gonna make decisions that weren't right... and we're gonna accept them and we're gonna grow from them." The 3 Success Pillars: Your Mind - Internal you. Where your thoughts originate. Your Relationships - Who you allow to influence your decisions. Your Environment - The setting that will build you or break you. The world doesn't care what we're after, nor does it care about our principles. It doesn't care about you or me, nor will it change for us. It doesn't owe us anything. The world is heading in a direction, spinning on its axis, and there's little we can do to change that. What we can change, however, is what we do. We can control our direction. We must continuously develop our core and worldview to help us navigate the temptations of the world. What happened on the morning of April 23, 2024? Coach Ryan had been on his way to OSU for an early morning workout with colleagues when his SUV, traveling at about 65 miles per hour, struck the semitrailer. Physical Trauma vs. Emotional Trauma – "When we lost Teague, I was healthy, I was physically healthy, I was mentally healthy... when I hit this tractor trailer at full speed... the physical trauma that occurred was surreal. And I wasn't ready." "I went into a terrible depression... I was sad when I lost my son, but I wasn't depressed... But in this, I was suicidal for a little bit." Coach Ryan openly shared his mental health struggles with family and got help. The #1 indicator of sustained success is emotional control. Two-word mantra — keep working. Physical Suffering as Mental Training – "Every single time I bike, there comes a moment in the bike ride where I realize I'm a sissy... there's a humbling, there's humility piece that you get from suffering." Choose the Hard Thing - "I can always come up with an excuse why I'm not gonna do squats... And then I have to pause and say, dude. Get under the bar... getting under the bar... builds confidence for everything else in life." (that was from me) Discipline as a Superpower – "Discipline is a superpower. It's available to everybody." The transferable skill of choosing difficulty when you don't want to.
We are currently in an era that celebrates self-expression. Whether online or in person, we are encouraged to share our thoughts and emotions. Unlike previous generations, we now have the freedom to openly express how we feel. While there are numerous advantages to sharing our emotions with others, overdoing it can have its drawbacks. That's why it's essential to strike a balance between emotional control and expressiveness. This balance, tailored to our personal preferences and the context we find ourselves in, is key to navigating the world of emotional expression with confidence and reassurance. To delve deeper into this subject, I have invited Sahar Milani, an Experiential Brand Specialist and Host of the Mindful Makers Podcast and Laura Roche, an MC, podcaster and mindfulness and self-compassion expert, to join me for an in-depth discussion. Sahar Milani is the founder and Experiential Director of Sorshaa, a global brand strategist with a passion for human connection, storytelling, and wellbeing. With over 20 years of experience in mindfulness and a career spanning Europe, MENA, and Southeast Asia, she helps brands communicate with clarity and purpose to create meaningful impact. Sahar is also the host of Mindful Makers, a podcast spotlighting individuals and brands making a positive difference, recognized as one of the top 8 female-led MENA podcasts by SheerLuxe Middle East. Her work sits at the intersection of curiosity, creativity, and conscious communication. Laura Roche was born and raised in Spain and holds a bachelor's degree in Social Pedagogy and a Master's in Mindfulness for Conscious Organizations from the University of Barcelona. She's also a mindfulness and self-compassion teacher from the University of San Diego, California. She spent hundreds of hours on retreats and even lived for short periods at a Buddhist temple. Having lived and worked on four continents, she has garnered valuable knowledge and experience in dealing with a multitude of people and cultures, always learning and opening herself up to new experiences. In this interview, we examine the various aspects of emotional expression, weighing its advantages and disadvantages. More importantly, we share practical strategies for achieving a healthy balance. Ethan Kross, author of Shift: Managing Your Emotions So They Don't Manage You, explains how teens and parents can become adept at emotional regulation, manage upsetting feelings effectively, and develop healthier responses to life's challenges.Full Show NotesEmotional regulation—the ability to manage and shift our feelings—has huge implications for everyone, especially teenagers. It's a life skill that might just make the difference between thriving or struggling in adulthood. Teens understandably grapple with heightened emotions and can sometimes feel controlled by them rather than the other way around. But what if we could teach them how to manage their emotions and build resilience early on?The effects of emotional dysregulation can be major: kids who struggle with this skill are more likely to face substance abuse, school dropout, and even criminal behavior as they grow older. Meanwhile, teens who are skilled at managing their emotional states tend to excel academically, professionally, and have healthier relationships overall. The good news is that emotion regulation is a learnable and teachable skill, with far-reaching positive effects if mastered during adolescence. In this episode, we're joined once again by Ethan Kross, award-winning professor, renowned researcher, and author of the new book Shift: Managing Your Emotions So They Don't Manage You. Ethan has dedicated his career to unpacking the mystery of our emotional worlds, blending cutting-edge research with practical, actionable insights. As both a scientist and a parent of a teen himself, Ethan understands deeply how crucial it is to arm our kids (and ourselves!) with simple yet powerful emotional regulation strategies. In our conversation, Ethan shares eye-opening findings, common misconceptions, and accessible, effective tools for parents who want to raise emotionally intelligent and resilient teenagers. Why Emotional Regulation Matters for TeensEmotion impacts every aspect of a teen's daily life—friendships, schoolwork, athletics, and family relationships. Despite its importance, emotional skills are often overlooked, leaving kids unequipped to manage powerful feelings. Ethan reveals eye-opening research, from classic experiments to recent ground-breaking studies, that clearly connect teens' successes and setbacks later in life to how well they can manage their emotional states.Ethan emphasizes that there are no "bad" emotions—anger, sadness, anxiety all serve valuable evolutionary purposes. Rather than suppressing these feelings, Ethan offers strategies to help teens learn to tune into their emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them. He also tackles the "myth of universal approach," noting that always facing or always avoiding tough feelings isn't the right solution—teens must learn flexibility instead.Teaching Teens Practical Ways to Shift Their EmotionsSo how can parents and educators tangibly equip teens with emotional regulation skills? Ethan shares practical interventions from research that really work. For example, understanding how our surroundings influence our emotional states empowers teens to strategically modify their spaces to feel less anxious or stressed. Ethan discusses how teens can make small changes, like placing items or images in their environment that effectively boost their mood and sense of calm.He also explains broader methods, like the proven WOOP framework (Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, and Plan). WOOP is essentially an easy-to-use reference for teens (and adults) when emotions inevitably flare up. Ethan breaks down how parents can talk teens through this process, helping them clearly define how they want to act during difficult times—rather than becoming reactive or impulsive.Subtle (and Powerful) Ways to Help TeensSometimes offering too much direct help can backfire, causing teens to feel disempowered or defensive. Ethan reveals research that shows invisible support—the kind teens don't realize you're giving—can play a huge role in helping them build regulation skills. He's sharing small shifts, like subtly introducing conversations around emotional techniques or quietly removing stressors in the family routine, that greatly improve teens' emotional balance and confidence. We also dive deep into how teens can use sensory influences like music and smells to modify their emotions deliberately, and the importance of shifting self-talk—from a self-focused, blaming style to one that feels more empathetic and empowering. In the Episode...Ethan's extensive knowledge and relatable advice offer invaluable guidance for parents hoping to raise emotionally resilient kids. In addition to the topics above, we also discuss:How to help teens view intense emotions as temporary and manageableThe specific connection between pronouns and processing breakupsWhy avoidance can sometimes be a surprisingly helpful strategyHow shifting language perspective (like using your own name when talking to yourself) can rapidly lower distressDon't miss this enlightening conversation with Ethan Kross, where science meets practical parenting strategies. Send us a textThe ninth installment of the Rebirth of Cool series takes us deeper than ever before, exploring emotional control as an art form that transforms masculine presence. We're not talking about suppressing emotions or becoming stoic – this is about mastering the space between feeling and expression where true power lives. Most men exist at harmful extremes – either bottling everything up or letting raw emotions drive their actions without filter. The gentleman who masters emotional control becomes an unshakable force not because he feels nothing, but because he feels everything and chooses his response with intention. When anger rises, he doesn't explode or suppress – he channels it into boundaries and decisive action. When desire sparks, he transforms it into focus rather than impulsivity. When fear emerges, he converts it to strategic awareness instead of paralysis. This mastery begins with developing emotional literacy – precisely naming what you're feeling instead of settling for vague descriptors like "fine" or "angry." It continues with the five-second emotional buffer – that crucial pause before responding that allows you to shift from reaction to intention. By preparing emotional scripts for triggering situations and training your nervous system through practices like breathwork and meditation, you build the foundation for remaining centered when life's storms hit hardest. The man with emotional control doesn't just benefit himself – he creates a gravitational center that changes rooms. People feel safer around him because his presence lowers tension without effort. His restraint isn't weakness but wisdom. When you master this art, you speak less but say more, command attention without trying, and create safety through consistent, intentional presence.Ready to stop being hijacked by your emotions and start directing them with purpose? Join me as we explore the difference between boys who get swept away and men who move with intention. Your emotions aren't weaknesses – they're untapped power waiting for your direction."True mastery is found in the details. The way you handle the little things defines the way you handle everything."

In this thought-provoking episode, the team explores how pain and suffering can cultivate stronger leadership skills. Drawing inspiration from Stoic philosophy, Buddhist parables, and personal experiences, they discuss the concept of the "two arrows"—how pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional—and how leaders can apply this mindset to stay composed and guide their teams effectively. They dive into how emotional control and mindfulness can transform not just your professional leadership, but also your personal relationships. If you're looking to develop a more resilient, thoughtful, and impactful leadership style, this episode is for you. Key Takeaways: The Two Arrows: Pain vs. Suffering The First Arrow: Pain is inevitable. It's the initial sting from an unexpected situation. The Second Arrow: Suffering is how we respond to that pain—and it's optional. Leaders who can control their reaction to adversity create a calm, steady presence that inspires confidence in their teams. How Pain Translates to Leadership Growth Painful experiences build emotional resilience and perspective, which are critical for effective leadership. Leaders who embrace discomfort are better equipped to handle high-stress situations and guide their teams through uncertainty. Mindfulness as a Leadership Tool Practicing mindful pauses between stimulus and response allows leaders to process situations logically rather than emotionally. Asking yourself “Why am I reacting this way?” or “How will this response impact the situation?” can reshape the outcome positively. The Importance of Emotional Control in Leadership Leaders who let emotions dictate their behavior create confusion and panic among their teams. Being the “eye of the hurricane” means projecting calm and confidence, even in chaotic situations. Applying These Principles in the Workplace When employees call off or unexpected issues arise, strong leaders don't panic—they assess, adapt, and lead calmly. Role modeling composure and critical thinking inspires the team to follow suit.

Instagram: @thegolfhypnotherapist Twitter: @parsoverbogeys Key Takeaways: Golf is a Math Game: Like poker, golf is about making the highest percentage decisions over time—not playing emotionally or aggressively. Expect the Inevitable: Bad shots will happen. If you expect them, you'll react logically instead of emotionally. Avoiding Bogeys > Chasing Birdies: The best players focus on limiting mistakes rather than hunting for low-percentage birdie opportunities. Commit Fully to Every Shot: If you don't fully commit to a target, you're adding unnecessary variance to your game. Shape Your Driver One Way: Stop trying to hit both draws and fades off the tee—own one consistent shot shape. Lag Putting is Underrated: The biggest scoring leaks come from poor lag putting. Improve from 20-40 feet to eliminate unnecessary three-putts. Stay Emotionally Detached: The best golfers remain logical under pressure and don't let emotions dictate decisions. Key Quotes: "Golf and poker aren't just similar—they're identical." "Every decision you make is a math-based decision, whether you realize it or not." "If you expect bad shots, you won't react emotionally when they happen." "Trying to force birdies will only lead to higher scores." "Your opponent in golf is the course, and it plays perfect game theory every time." "Winning is more fun than fun is fun—play smarter, not riskier." "The key to golf is not being great—it's making fewer mistakes than everyone else." Girls begin going through puberty as early as 8 years old. From the moment you become aware of your body and people begin commenting on your changes, shame, discomfort, and confusion begin to settle in. While we all settle into our bodies in different ways and at different ages, the harsh reality is that 53% of American girls are not happy with their bodies by 13 years of age and by 17 the amount of unhappy girls grows to 78%! Behind the onslaught of body image issues and societal pressures that mark the barometer of where you fall on the ‘acceptance meter,' are a mounting number of quietly misdiagnosed hormonal issues. Dr. Sara Gottefried is a Harvard and M.I.T. graduate, medical physician, and NY Times bestselling author of, The Hormone Cure. She shines light on the issues women are having with being properly diagnosed, treated and even heard on health issues that have been sold as not being related. As females, the number of factors that impact our hormones, our moods, our ability to function and feel like we have worth and value is mind-blowing. [Original air date: 10-13-21].
