Quarterback C.J. Beathard is making a strong challenge for the backup job, as he and veteran Matt Barkley have taken equal practice snaps behind Brian Hoyer. The 49ers’ top pass-catchers stood out during training camp. Pierre Garçon and Marquise Goodwin have shown a lot of consistency as Brian Hoyer’s best options. Kyle Shanahan told reporters after practice that Reuben Foster is the team's starting weak side linebacker. Dontae Johnson opened practice with two impressive reps in coverage. He kept up with Marquise Goodwin on a go route and later broke up a pass intended for Aldrick Robinson. The defense was dominant for most of practice. Eric Reid and Pita Taumoepenu each had two sacks on the day. Ahmad Brooks, Tank Carradine and NaVorro Bowman also had a sack on Tuesday. Bowman's solid day also featured a pass breakup in coverage of Carlos Hyde. Rashard Robinson had great coverage of Goodwin and Pierre Garçon. - Garçon got his revenge against Robinson with a touchdown reception in the left corner of the end zone. Brian Hoyer lofted a perfect pass over Garcon's shoulder. - C.J. Beathard threw a touchdown pass to Trent Taylor on an in-cut from right to left. It’s may be the offseason, but the San Francisco 49ers’ general manager and head coach tandem of John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have been busy making moves. They signed defensive back K’Waun Williams and defensive tackle Earl Mitchell, while re-signing wide receiver Jeremy Kerley to a three-year deal. In a move that was both surprising and not, the Niners have released wide receiver Torrey Smith, after two lackluster years in two very lackluster offenses. But still, it makes a lot of sense. They have also released safety Antoine Bethea. Onward and upward we go. With the free agency period officially beginning on Thursday and the draft less than two months away, the 49ers are in need of a quarterback, wide receivers, linebackers, and basically everything else. Therefore, we can expect many more moves to come.
