In this week's episode Patrick and Greg get to hang out with Noah Greifer from the Institute for Quantitative Social Sciences at Harvard University to delve into the fascinating world of propensity scores: what they are, how we obtain them, and how they can be thoughtfully used to strengthen our causal inferences. Along the way we also mention Popular Woodworking, fixing things on the back end, hiding your own Easter eggs, 18 hour warnings, easy undergrad majors, Meyers-Briggs career predictions, picking an ideal advisor, SASholes, demyelination, hearing asterisks, being an ANCOVist, the 11th Commandment, what keeps you up at night, answering the question you want to, and it's all BS.

A Life Well Designed Podcast- Lifestyle design for career, relationships, and business

ABOUT OUR GUEST Christopher Schwarz is a long-time woodworker and writer who has spent the last 20 years encouraging woodworkers to embrace more handwork in their shops. He built his first workbench when he was 11 and was introduced to handwork when his family built its first house on an Arkansas farm without electricity. After formal training as a journalist at Northwestern University, Chris worked as a newspaperman by day and studied woodworking at night at the University of Kentucky. In 1996, he was hired as managing editor of Popular Woodworking, where he helped resuscitate the magazine and introduced more handwork into its pages. He eventually became editor and began writing books and teaching woodworking classes. In 2007 he founded Lost Art Press LLC, a publishing company devoted to one thing: reviving handwork. By 2011, Lost Art Press had grown so much that Chris stepped down as editor of Popular Woodworking Magazine (he's now a contributing editor) to focus on his company full time and build furniture commissions. He's the author of several woodworking books, including “The Anarchist's Tool Chest,” “Workbenches: From Design & Theory to Construction & Use,” and “Campaign Furniture.” He has also has produced more than a dozen DVDs on handwork with Lie-Nielsen Toolworks and F+W Media Inc. He lives in Fort Mitchell, Ky., with his wife and two daughters. CONNECT LostArtPress.com ABOUT THE EPISODE He was a household name in the house I grew up with, and I'm super stoked I got to chat with him & share that with you. We talk about the nature of craftsmanship, the role of design in his life, preserving the genius of history's builders, and a lot more. There's a lot in this one, so let's get to it...

This episode wasn't recorded through the lipstick pickup of a Danelectro guitar, but it sure sounds like it (and that's not a good thing). We could lie and say, "Hey, it sounds like a hip old-timey tin can vintage ribbon such-and-such microphone!" But, we'd be lying. It was the internal mic on Brandon's iMac because he hit the wrong button. If you want a crappy Danelectro for some reason, check out the one Derek sent Brandon via text this week at http://nashville.craigslist.org/msg/5467367171.html and have a good laugh!Otherwise, we'd like to announce our officially bringing Jon Russelburg closer into the fold as an online editor for Bad Apple Records! Jon is going to help us clean up and improve the blog a bit and maybe help with our social media efforts. Not only is Jon a good friend and talented artist himself, he's also the online editor for Popular Woodworking magazine, and we're excited to see what fresh ideas he can bring to the table moving forward.Weekly Download:"A Brief Encounter" by Why They CameDon't Eat From the Candy Tree LP (2011)Get the Album on iTunes: http://apple.co/24GUUKsHelp support our efforts at the label by contributing to our page on Patreon. Matt's Basement Workshop Video Feed

Another Woodworking in America has come and gone and it's left a lasting impression. Not just on me but everybody I've talked with who attended. This is like no other woodworking show out there right now. It's not about the vendors, it's not about the lecturers, it's all about the people attending. And I'm willing to admit I was wrong about my fears of the show becoming too big too fast. Even with the introduction of power tool classes and the combining of design seminars with the handtool lectures, Woodworking in America didn't lose it's focus on what today's woodworker wants to learn and more importantly experience, and it's that experience that will keep me and so many others coming back year after year. Even if you missed the deadline for signing up to attend the classes with the likes of Frank Klausz, Jim Tolpin, Roy Underhill, Ron Herman, George Walker and Michael Fortune you can still run into them in the marketplace, and what a marketplace it was too! Imagine all the vendors you've heard the staff of Popular Woodworking go on and on about in article after article regarding the new small manufacturer who's not just selling you a great tool but are using the tools in their own shops too. Still the one thing that blows me away each time I attend, are the attendees themselves. You may arrive alone, plan a quiet weekend of great lectures and maybe buy yourself something nice but after the first class you'll suddenly find yourself having conversations with your fellow attendees as if you'd known each other for years. Don't take my word for it, ask anyone who's attended! In fact, checkout some of the great links we've been putting together from my fellow bloggers and podcasters. Here's a link to a post where we've been adding them so you can get another perspective on the event CLICK HERE. Today's episode contains snippets from a few of my classes on the first day. Including a lecture by George Walker, Chris Schwarz, Michael Fortune and Roy Underhill. Enjoy, I know I did.
