This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. Diversified mining company Anglo American is taking steps to help to restore an Amazon rainforest equivalent of which less than 10% remains intact. The Mata Atlántica carbon forest is located near Anglo's Minas-Rio iron-ore mine, in Brazil. Anglo intends playing a role in the recovery of the rich biome by reforestation amounting to more than 2 000 ha a year and the removal of 600 000 t of carbon-dioxide equivalent a year. This news emerged during the London- and Johannesburg-listed mining major's sustainability performance update, opened by CE Duncan Wanblad. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) This included how its integrated approach to sustainability is unlocking value and securing its ability to deliver responsible long-term growth in future-enabling metals and minerals. "While mining footprints are comparatively small, we believe we can play a positive role," Anglo nature and land head Ian Hudson stated during the webinar covered by Mining Weekly. "We already have over 20 000 ha of this important biome under our management. Across our operations in Brazil, we undertake compensation and restoration works to increase that local biodiversity surrounding our operations," Hudson added. Wanblad described sustainability as a pre-requisite for value creation in mining, through the delivery of operational excellence, portfolio improvement, and growth. "Our sustainability and technology capabilities, and our approach to customer-centric marketing of our metal and mineral products, position us strongly as a partner of choice and thereby to create enduring value for all our stakeholders. "Together, these are central to what we see as a competitive advantage in how we develop projects such as Quellaveco, Woodsmith and Sakatti, designed as the next generation of our FutureSmart Mines, with enhanced sustainability outcomes," said Wanblad. Anglo sustainability director Helena Nonka emphasised the embedding of sustainability by the group into its strategy and value creation model, "from portfolio choices to our everyday operational decisions". "One such example of our integrated approach is our work on nature, for which there are numerous compelling business cases, such as significant reductions in closure and rehabilitation costs, but also helping build greater trust in mining as societal expectations of our industry continue to increase in parallel with the need for essential metals and minerals. "The health of our business is dependent on a healthy environment and we recognise the value of being able to share how our business measures and manages its key interfaces with nature so that our stakeholders can be confident in our approach to achieving a net positive impact on biodiversity," Nonka added. INTEGRATED APPROACH TO NATURE Nature rightly continues to gain momentum on the global agenda, with increased recognition of the threats to nature, its societal importance and the value of nature-based solutions to tackle climate change impacts, Anglo stated in a media release. Its pathway to achieving net biodiversity gains in the areas it operates began with the implementation of its biodiversity standard at the end of 2018. This standard defines how Anglo measures, assesses and manages biodiversity across its value chain and mining lifecycle - through to closure and regeneration. Detailed baseline assessments across all managed operations have been completed. These define and assess significant biodiversity features, including habitats, species and ecosystems to protect and further restore. In addition, a biodiversity management programme has been developed for each of its sites. The plans are also used to feed into regional and national biodiversity programmes, adding value beyond its own site work. "We're exploring partnerships, biomonitoring programmes and pioneering measurement metrics to support net positive impacts. This includes the group's pr...

This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. Global diversified miner Anglo American is focusing on improving its cost performance and cash generation by reconfiguring several assets to adjust the production profile to near-term constraints and market conditions, CE Duncan Wanblad outlined during an investor update call on December 8. The group is targeting cost savings of about $500-million by mid-2024, with Wanblad saying this programme is well advanced. Moreover, it is targeting a $1.8-billion decrease in capital expenditure by 2026. Wanblad said the group was taking deliberate and decisive actions to enhance returns, in light of global economic weaknesses, especially affecting consumer-focused diamonds and platinum group metals (PGMs), with costs impacted on by strong and prolonged inflationary pressure. PRODUCTION REDUCTION Wanblad pointed out that group company Kumba Iron Ore would be reducing its production guidance for 2024 owing to prolonged logistics constraints, with South Africa's well-documented port and rail challenges having led to increased stockpile levels and also impacting on revenue. He said that while the government was addressing the logistics constraints, it was a long-term approach, and in the interim, the group would be taking other measures including reconfiguring the business and revising the mine plan. The adjusted production would enable structural cost and capital expenditure (capex) reduction to protect margins. The group is looking to rebalance the value chain and reduce year-end product stockpiles by about two-million tonnes. Kumba will also be undertaking a multi-year cost optimisation journey. Wanblad further announced that Anglo would also focus on higher-margin own-production through its PGMs processing facilities in South Africa and moving to one plant at the Los Bronces copper operation, in Chile. A focused investment at the Mogalakwena openpit PGMs mine in South Africa would be undertaken at the appropriate time, Wanblad averred. As a result of such initiatives, Wanblad informed that the group expected to deliver lower unit costs in 2024, despite high inflation, and a $1.8-billion decrease in capex in the 2023 to 2026 period, as targeted. "We are building a platform for strengthened and sustainable operational and financial performance. We took early action in 2023 to increase business resilience in the face of ongoing economic and geopolitical volatility and the current cyclical weakness in PGMs and diamonds. "As a result, we have already gone a long way towards reducing our business support costs by $500-million by mid-2024, with an additional $500-million in annual cost efficiencies identified across our global businesses that we expect to deliver in 2024," Wanblad said. In 2024, group-wide production is expected to decrease by about 4%, as production has been rescheduled to enhance value and reduce unit costs. Unit costs are expected to decrease by about 2%, with cost discipline expected to more than offset inflation. Capex will be about $5.7-billion - about $800-million less than initially planned - and includes expenditure on the Woodsmith project, a polyhalite fertiliser mine being developed in the North East of England. In 2025, production is expected to decrease by a further 3%, with production changes aimed at enhancing value and reducing unit costs, as well as scheduled maintenance. Capex is again guided at $5.7-billion - a reduction of about $400-million compared with initial estimates. In 2026, production is expected to increase by about 4%, benefiting from higher volumes in copper, iron-ore, steelmaking coal and diamonds. Capex will be about $5.3-billion. "Looking ahead, the fundamental supply and demand picture for many metals and minerals is ever more attractive. Many of the world's major economies are focusing their resources on meeting global decarbonisation timelines and, as the global population grows, continues to urbanise and d...

This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. Sakatti, with its metal concentrations of platinum group metals (PGMs), copper, nickel, cobalt, and others, may be the site of the next greenfield project of diversified Johannesburg- and London-listed mining company Anglo American. Located in central Lapland in Finland, Sakatti's polymetallic orebody is aligned to the critical minerals priorities of Finland and the European Union (EU). (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) Sakatti is set to be a remotely operated, low-carbon underground mine with an electric mining fleet. No reference was made to whether or not that electric mining fleet will be of the battery electric vehicle variety, generally used in underground environments, or the Anglo-developed green hydrogen electrified kind, which is being advanced at the opencast Mogalakwena PGMs operation in South Africa. But already stated is that it will use technology and mining methods that create zero waste and enable high degrees of water recycling, an approach which underpinned the environmental impact assessment (EIA). Moreover, in developing Sakatti, Anglo intends building on what it has learnt from its development of the Quellaveco copper mine in Peru as well as what it is learning at its current Woodsmith crop nutrients project in the UK - particularly in terms of minimal surface footprint and using technology and innovation to deliver even better sustainability outcomes. In the words of Anglo Crop Nutrients CEO Tom McCulley, that means being "out of sight, safe, reliable, and catering to our customers and society's needs". "I've just come back from Sakatti. It's in a remote part of the world. It's designed as the next generation of Future Smart mining… contributing to a sustainable supply of critical minerals to support the energy transition in Finland and the EU," Anglo projects and development director Alison Atkinson told this week's sustainability performance update, covered by Mining Weekly. The reference to remote operation implies personnel sitting on surface and directing peopleless operations underground. "I'm pleased to say that the relevant authorities in Finland have approved the EIA. This is a fantastic achievement and a major milestone for the project, reflecting the true collaboration of all involved. "We will continue to drill over the season to refine the modern approach we must and will take in developing this mine," said Atkinson. "We will take our time on this early-stage development. Detailed study, not only of the mine itself, but in its implementation and operations will be critical to delivery. After all, it's the upfront detailed development that sets the foundation of this asset for decades to come. "We will also continue to build the project delivery capabilities as the rigour and discipline in executing a high confidence plan well is as fundamental as the support of the stakeholders and neighbours, in addition to those skilled partners we will work with, to construct and implement our plans. "Great projects are done brilliantly when that is in place alongside mature design and robust plan. "We're replicating, continually learning, and approving our approach as we go and putting it into practice at scale across the other parts of the portfolio. "We believe this is a competitive advantage for us and a fundamental part of our journey to sustainable mining. Delivering on our ambition is crucial as we have to produce the metals and minerals needed for the energy transition and the ongoing economic development in a responsible way, because that is the only way," Atkinson emphasised.
This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. The transition of Anglo American to 100% renewable electricity supply across its South America operations has helped the London- and Johannesburg-listed diversified mining company to reduce its carbon emissions by more than a fifth. At the end of 2022, Anglo's Scope 1 and 2 emissions were 21% below the peak levels of 2019 - a significant reduction that the full-on renewables advance at its operations in Chile and Peru secured, Anglo reported on Wednesday at its regular sustainability performance update covered by Mining Weekly. Next in line to follow South America's lead in 2025 are Anglo's operations in Australia. In Southern Africa, Anglo is working to build a 3 GW to 5 GW renewable energy ecosystem of wind and solar generation capacity through renewables company Envusa Energy, which it owns jointly with EDF Renewables. Envusa this week lodged an application for a licence to trade electricity in South Africa's Northern Cape, North West, Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces over the Eskom network. The seven offtakers are located in the Northern Cape, North West and Limpopo and the three generators on the borders of the Northern Cape and Eastern Cape provinces. Anglo's integrated approach to sustainability in project development is securing the ability of the company to deliver responsible long-term growth in future-enabling metals and minerals. "Our unwavering focus is on driving consistent, competitive performance to deliver our next phase of value creation - at the heart of which is our integrated approach to sustainability," said CE Duncan Wanblad. "One of our greatest challenges as an industry, though, is to bridge the clear gap between increasing recognition of the need for ever greater volumes of mined materials and society's acceptance of the activity required to produce them. "Our learned experience in delivering improved sustainability outcomes from successful projects such as Quellaveco is part of the solution and is integral to how we make our strategic and investment choices - across our current operations and projects in design and development - and to unlocking enduring value for all our stakeholders," Wanblad added. "We have long seen a holistic approach to sustainability as a key driver of commercial and stakeholder value. Sustainability is a core competency that we deploy throughout our business, from strategic portfolio choices to project design and delivery to day-to-day operational decisions, always with value creation in mind," said Anglo strategy and sustainability director Helena Nonka. "Societal expectations of our industry will continue to increase, as will the need for the essential metals and minerals, and we must build greater trust if we are to provide materials that are required to decarbonise our planet, and that are also the building blocks of modern life - from housing to food - for ever more people," Nonka added. "For multi-generational assets, such as Woodsmith and Quellaveco before it, it is critical that we embed the latest thinking and technologies into safe and sustainable modern mine designs," said Anglo Crop Nutrients CEO Tom McCulley. Building on the blueprint for success established at the Quellaveco copper operation in Peru, the company intends to continue to deploy the integration of technology and sustainability at the Woodsmith crop nutrients project in the UK, which is expected to set a new benchmark for modern mining - "out of sight, safe, reliable, and catering to our customers and society's needs". "Aligning that design at Woodsmith with the highly attractive environmental credentials of our low carbon, organic-certified and high efficacy fertiliser product is a further aspect of the value proposition of our product for customers. We're building the next generation of FutureSmart MiningTM," McCulley added. Projects and Development director Alison Atkinson expressed the belief that Anglo's abilit...

Listener Question — Where does the table saw go? Stephen asks: How can you put a table saw against a wall? There are enough different operations that all sides are required for access. Ripping requires access in the front and rear. Crosscut tables require access from the left side as well as the right side for longer stock or plywood. Red Cedar Challenge — Prove Logan Wrong Logan milled some large Eastern red cedar. While it's ideal for drawer boxes, and lining chests and closets, he doesn't think it looks all that great as a primary material. Send us a photo of your red cedar project. To say I left this conversation with some new information would definitely be an understatement. It was fun. It was educational. And I have no doubt that it's going to be one for the books for you guys too! In this episode, we chat to Richard Murrell who is the site director at Anglo American on the Woodsmith mine here in the UK. Having studied at the Camborne School of mine and worked both here in the UK and in Australia, Richard has a passion and desire to help the younger generation and graduates in the mining industry. He is coming onto the podcast to give some advice to graduates in their early years. But also, to advise managers and more senior mining professionals in hiring young engineers for their business and operations. KEY TAKEAWAYS Don´t send a generic letter. Do your homework, send it to the right person and make it specific. Be sure to follow up on the emails or letters you send. Research is essential. The more you know about a company and its projects the better. Networking is vital. Many, many people have found jobs at networking events. Being on the tools underground may not be what you want to do forever, but it's still very good experience. When at university seek out jobs that teach you related skills. For example, work on a building site instead of in a cafe. Build up your own skills, don´t expect your company to always pay for training. The industry has to be proactive about selling mining as a career to stand any chance of filling the skill gap. People need to be made aware that mining can be done in an environmentally friendly way. Many people just assume that a mining career means having to move abroad. Increasingly, that is not the case. The industry needs to make that clearer. The UK mining industry is buoyant, environmentally friendly and has a bright future. Apprenticeships are vital to the industry. Get children building as soon as possible. Technical Lego or Meccano are great. Teach your children about fossils, geology, and visit quarries and engineered facilities. BEST MOMENTS ‘Keep sending those emails off, keep approaching, but also keep following up. ´ ‘If you can start at the bottom maybe as a nipper or a truck driver underground it´s invaluable experience.' ‘There are around 2000 mines and quarries operating in the UK.' Episode 1 of Pull Up a Chair at the Soul Café PodcastWith special guest Celia Woodsmith of Della MaeIn this episode I have a great conversation with Celia Woodsmith the lead singer of the Americana, Bluegrass label defying all female band Della Mae. Celia kicks the conversation off with what makes her tick—gives her passion. She talks some about Della Mae's life changing visit to Pakistan which led to a little TED TALK entitled—A Soft Drink and a Song in the Hills of Pakistan. Even though this happened many years ago the current relevance is eye opening. When asked about something funny that has happened to Della Mae---let's just say the story is hilarious. We talked about how the Pandemic is changing us and that led to Pretty Stories on Sunday's and more. The conversation ends with an honest talk back about a couple of Della Mae's recent songs---Headlights and The Way it Was Before that address—or better said tell stories of our current reality of how we are divided as a people and how we must speak truth (tell stories) and hopefully let people move into the change that we can all make.

On this episode of the ShopNotes Podcast, John, Logan, and Phil look back on the year that was 2020. The good, the bad, and the ugly... that is a perfect description for the past year. We started a lot of new projects at Woodsmith, like this podcast, and saw a lot of changes related to the pandemic. Some of those changes were inconvenient to say the least, but some of them were pretty beneficial.
In this episode, Phil and Logan are joined by shop craftsman Marc Hopkins and designer Dillon Baker. During the quarantine, they've still been hard at work in the Woodsmith magazine shop designing and building for both Woodsmith and Popular Woodworking.
