Drop us a line or two . . .This one hits differently.The episode opens with Queenie still finding her footing after what can only be described as a vacation that got yanked out from under her. She and TT had been soaking up the final glorious days of Cape Cod — doing absolutely nothing of consequence, seaside, blissfully unbothered — when Queenie got the call. Mumsy had taken a fall on her way in from her program. Smashed pelvis. Fractured sacrum. Twenty-four hours in the ER. And Queenie was five-plus hours away in Truro, Massachusetts.Enter Lauren — Queenie's daughter, a registered nurse, who had literally just come off her own shift when the call came in and immediately redirected herself to St. Peter's Hospital to be with Gigi. Which, thank God, because what unfolded in that ER was a master class in how not to treat a ninety-three-year-old woman with multiple fractures and mild cognitive disorder. Gigi spent hours on a stretcher in a hallway. No fluids. No pain management. Lauren sat in the waiting room in her scrubs for three hours before she could even get back to her mother. A physician didn't lay eyes on her until the early hours of the morning — twelve hours in. They were also apparently going to send her home, and the only thing that stopped that was the fact that Gigi was having trouble oxygenating. Which is terrifying, and also accidentally the thing that saved her.Queenie is cautiously optimistic that Gigi will be transferred to Sunnyview, an acute rehab facility, with Lauren quietly working every connection she has to make it happen. The physician reviewer initially declined the transfer — and then apparently learned he was "dealing with a VIP" and reversed course. So. Lauren's getting things done.Meanwhile, TT is recording from the Cape on her last day — computer balanced on four puzzle boxes, microphone rattling every time she shifts on the bed, doing her absolute best. She's not ready to leave. Nobody ever is. Honey spotted a great white shark in the bay with his binoculars (there had already been a sighting from a boat the day before, so he knew what he was looking at). A seal was hanging out ten feet off the beach. TT's sister Mare found two rocks shaped like sharks and everyone is coming home with a collection of found treasures. TT found a nose. An actual rock nose. They both save boxes — Apple boxes are singled out as particularly premium — and they are completely unapologetic about this.There is a brief and important moment of grief for the inflatable island, a large and unwieldy float that had served them well but had been slowly losing air all week despite a duct-tape patch job that was, by their own admission, not exactly precision work. With the combined assistance of TT's three sons and two daughters-in-law, the island was retired with dignity. They're reconfiguring for something more age-appropriate going forward. A parasol was suggested.The episode's "What Have You Consumed Today" check-in: Queenie is smoking Mendo Purps dog walkers from Hepworth — tiny little things, perfect for microdosing, very cute. TT scored her gummies, which have apparently been rebranded from "Hummies" to "Tree Works." TT took half of one five-milligram. They are both doing what they need to do to stay on an even keel.The "Wait, What?" segment this week is a roundup of things people only discovered about their partners after moving in together. One sock removed hours before bed, the other stays on — nobody knows why. Three hundred used contact lenses tossed behind the headboard instead of the trash. Popcorn eaten with bites of lettuce, apparently a whole-family tradition. Coffee cups left a quarter full in random locations throughout the home. Cabinets never quite closed, jar lids never quite tightened — this one lands especially hard given that Queenie points out they paid serious money for self-closing cabinets and drawers that are somehow being actively defeated. No consistent spot for keys or wallet, leading to morning chaos. Overfilling plates, eating half, leaving the rest by the sink. TT's real grievance surfaces: leaving two chips in a bag, two kernels in the popcorn, one sad schmear of cream cheese. Why. TT poses the actual important question here: how many people confronted these behaviors, and how many have just been quietly simmering for forty years? Queenie, speaking from experience, gives the simmering option roughly forty-odd years before it erupts — probably over something completely unrelated.TT's Choice, the segment where TT picks a number between one and seventy-five, lands on twenty-five: "What if you had to live your mother's exact life? What's the first thing you'd change?" TT goes straight to money — her family lived in poverty, and she'd change that first, with the hope it might have kept her grandfather from becoming violent toward her grandmother. Queenie's mind goes immediately to her own grandfather, who suffered what was then called a "nervous breakdown," was institutionalized for years, declared legally incompetent, and received electroshock therapy — which Queenie's mother witnessed firsthand during her nursing school psych rotation. Both women find themselves trying to undo pain for their mothers, trying to remove the source of trauma. Then they catch themselves: would changing those things mean their mothers — or they themselves — would be the same people? Probably not. It's a real question with no clean answer, and they sit in it for a moment.From there, the conversation drifts into what they would change about their own lives. Queenie says she'd want more awareness — more information, more sense of what was possible. She never considered going away to school, never even thought about working a summer on the Cape, not because she said no but because the option simply never materialized in her mind. It wasn't available to her as a concept. They talk about the generation-wide narrowing of possibility for women — a classmate who was explicitly told her parents wouldn't fund architecture school because she had brothers. Someone had to be the one to get educated. It wasn't going to be her. Queenie and TT both landed in human services almost by a kind of collegial suggestion — TT picked it, and Queenie thought: service to humans, helping people, I can do that. And she could.Queenie reflects on nursing — something she considered but rejected because she didn't trust her own instincts, feared paralysis by analysis, couldn't imagine the decisiveness it requires. She has enormous respect for nurses for exactly that reason. Which brings it back to Lauren, and to TT's sister Mary, and to what nurses actually do every single day — the compassion, the common sense, the ability to think outside the box under pressure, the advocacy. The Fucket List entry for the week is exactly that: fuck it to professionals who treat vulnerable people without dignity. Queenie's quiet fury about Gigi's twelve hours in a hallway, alone, unexamined, in pain — it comes through clearly. And her equally quiet point about what happens to people who don't have a Lauren in their corner, who don't have someone who knows what questions to ask and won't back down — that one lands hard.The episode closes with TT packing up in Truro, stopping in Albany to see her sister before the long drive home, sand in her shoes, rocks in her bags, already mourning the version of herself that got to live here for a while. Jodi Koch Peterman, CEO of Elizabeth Erin Designs, interior designer, and host of the Designing in 5D podcast, shares a client horror story that somehow manages to include a runaway cabinet vendor, a $26,000 glazing mistake, furniture dumped into the ocean, mold, miscommunication, and a project that lasted nearly two years.What began as an exciting whole-house remodel quickly became a perfect storm of problems. The client wanted a dramatic transformation, including a massive "Barbie Dreamhouse" closet and a luxury spa-like feel throughout the home. But delays getting an engineer, escalating design choices, a budget that ballooned far beyond expectations, and repeated communication breakdowns began to put everyone under increasing pressure.Then things got even stranger. Cabinets were supposedly destroyed by a tornado. Another set of cabinets arrived in the wrong color because two clients' orders had been mixed up. A cabinet vendor disappeared after taking the money—and was eventually jailed. During COVID, one furniture shipment was even dumped into the ocean because of closed ports. Meanwhile, the client was dealing with mold at her temporary home, and Jodi found herself caught in the middle of an increasingly fractured relationship between the client and contractor.As the project spiraled, Jodi became increasingly involved, sometimes working for months without additional compensation. She even showed up with a sage stick to "sage" the client, the house, and the dog in an attempt to clear the negativity surrounding the project.But the biggest lessons came afterward. On most years at Burt Lake -- about 20 minutes south of Mackinaw City, where the Hansen family vacations -- it amounts to maybe 10 or 15 small dots on the legs after a week of swimming. Manageable. Scrubbing off with a towel and showering after swimming keeps it in check. Spraying legs with waterproof sunscreen before going in also seems to help.This year, Dan skipped the sunscreen and ended up with the worst case he's ever had. His legs felt like they were on fire -- not pain, just relentless itching -- and he drove to the nearest store and bought $60 worth of anti-itch creams, sprays, calamine lotion, witch hazel, and Epsom salts. The store clerk was a very enthusiastic talker who wanted to discuss each item, share the story of his childhood poison ivy, and price-check several things by shouting across the store. It was a long checkout.After a couple of hours of applying everything he bought, the itching started to calm down. By that evening he was mostly fine.The Vaseline tip. Coating your legs with Vaseline before swimming creates a barrier that makes it harder for the parasites to reach your skin. It feels strange but not as strange as you'd expect. Dan used it for the rest of the trip and nobody in his family got swimmer's itch after that. He tried to share this tip with two new families he saw swimming in the shallowest part of the lake the next day. The attempt to warn them on a narrow dock involved an unexplained leg-lift, the phrase "I have a message for you," and a display of the spots on his leg that left both men frozen and blinking for an extended period. The warning eventually got through. Dan walked back to the cabin. The Vaseline tip is real. The social execution was not.What Is a Hoosier Cabinet? [14:01]Hoosier cabinets are freestanding kitchen storage units that were made primarily in Indiana from the late 1800s through the 1930s. They are, by most measures, one of the most cleverly designed pieces of kitchen furniture ever made -- and most people today have never heard of them.The basic structure: about four feet wide and six feet tall. Lower cabinets on casters, a work surface in the middle, and shallower upper cabinets above. That much sounds simple. The details are what make them worth talking about.The pull-out counter. The work surface can slide out toward you, adding six to eight inches of workspace when you need it. When you're done, you push it back. But here's what makes it genuinely clever: the drawers directly underneath the counter travel with it. When you pull the counter out, those drawers come with it, so everything you need is still within reach -- not stranded behind where you're standing.The flour bin. Behind one of the upper cabinet doors, many Hoosier cabinets had a large built-in flour storage bin with a sifter and dispenser at the bottom. You slide your bowl underneath, turn a crank, and sifted flour drops right into the bowl. No hauling out a bag, no digging around with a scoop. A separate sugar bin often worked the same way on the other side.The doors. Not an inch of space goes unused. The backs of the cabinet doors are fully utilized -- spice racks, cookbook holders, pie tin racks, hooks, and in some models, baking charts printed directly onto the door interior showing measurements and oven times.The lower cabinet. When you open the lower doors, many models have a shelf that slides or rolls out automatically -- not something you have to dig around in the back of with a flashlight. Pan storage made accessible.The roll-top section. Above the pull-out counter, between the counter surface and the upper cabinets, many models had a small roll-top section that kept counter-level items behind a slatted door when not in use. Counter-level storage, completely hidden when you don't want to look at it.The countertop surface itself was typically porcelain enamel or zinc -- durable, easy to clean, built for heavy daily use.All of that packed into four feet of wall space, on wheels.Why Hoosier Cabinets Caught On [16:25]Here's the context most people don't know: for most of American history, kitchens were nearly empty rooms. Not the way we think of a kitchen today. You had a work table, a sink, maybe a few open shelves. Built-in cabinetry existed but required hiring a skilled carpenter to build directly into the house, and most people couldn't afford it. Built-in cabinets didn't become a standard feature in American kitchens until the late 1920s.That meant the flour was in the pantry. The sugar was in the pantry. The bowls were on a shelf across the room. Every time you baked, you walked to the pantry for flour, back to the table, across the room for a bowl, back to the pantry because you forgot the baking powder. Over and over.Hoosier cabinets were marketed as saving you 1,000 steps. Pull up a chair and don't get up again. Everything you needed for daily baking -- flour, sugar, spices, rolling pins, cutting boards, bread knives, bowls -- was concentrated in one workstation, with a surface to work on included. The number 1,000 may have been marketing, but the concept was real. These cabinets genuinely changed how work happened in a kitchen.About 130 companies eventually made versions of them, most based in Indiana, and at their peak one in ten American kitchens had one.Where the Name Came From [25:11]The origin of the Hoosier cabinet is harder to pin down than you'd expect. Kitchen cabinet patents go back to around 1885, and what seems to have happened is that multiple Indiana furniture companies landed on the same basic idea around the same time. According to the museum in Nappanee, Indiana -- which has one of the best collections of these cabinets in the country -- no one person and no one company gets the credit for inventing them.The name most likely came from one of two sources. The Hoosier Manufacturing Company of New Castle, Indiana was the largest producer and the loudest advertiser. Their brand may have become the generic name for the whole category, the same way Kleenex became the word for any facial tissue. The other argument is simpler: most of these cabinets were made in Indiana, home of the Hoosiers, so they became Hoosier cabinets by geography. Either way, the name stuck and became the universal term for the whole category.Why Hoosier Cabinets Disappeared [27:24]Built-in cabinets. By the late 1920s, houses were being built with real cabinetry integrated into the walls, continuous countertops, proper storage from floor to ceiling. A four-foot freestanding cabinet couldn't compete with a whole wall of built-ins.The fact that Hoosier cabinets sat on legs also became a problem. Dust, grease, and crumbs collected in the space underneath, and that gap was harder to clean than a sealed cabinet base that met the floor. Built-ins were simply easier to maintain.Manufacturers tried to fight the decline with prettier patterns and brighter colors. One company offered a Mediterranean-styled version. None of it worked. By 1935, the Hoosier cabinet was considered old-fashioned. The Hoosier Manufacturing Company was sold and eventually liquidated in 1942.The Modern Resurgence [28:42]Hoosier cabinets are showing up again. People are finding them at antique stores and estate sales, and the market for them is real.A rough-condition oak cabinet in need of work can sometimes be found for a few hundred dollars. Fully restored examples -- cleaned up, refinished, hardware sorted out -- start around $1,100 and average closer to $1,800. If you want to build your own, plans are available online, including from Popular Woodworking and similar sources.Dan recommends searching for Hoosier cabinet videos as a starting point. My Guest: Clark Lea is the head football coach at Vanderbilt University. He spent 14 years as an assistant coach, including three as defensive coordinator at Notre Dame, before returning to his alma mater in 2021 to inherit a program that had gone winless the year before. He's now the back-to-back SEC Coach of the Year and the architect of one of the great turnarounds in college football history. We recorded this conversation live at our 2026 Learning Leader Growth Summit in Nashville, surrounded by members of the Learning Leader Circle. Key Learnings Clark inherited a Vanderbilt program that went winless the year before. He says he probably screwed up 50% of his first year. The game is how quickly you can pivot. Losing is a powerful teacher. It cleanses and purifies you in ways you don't want but need. You can blame other people, sink into self-pity, or ask: "What am I meant to be learning right now?" Fast-forward 15 years. Look at this moment from a future place of breakthrough. What did you do now that allowed change to occur? "What do I wanna be proud of in the attempt?" Letting go of expected outcomes is what allows you to refine and simplify the way you see the world. Enter the building unguarded. The clearer you are about who you are and what you want, the more obvious it becomes who fits and who doesn't. Different ball, same problems. Clark spends time learning from the Milwaukee Brewers, the Baltimore Ravens, and others. Different industry, same human challenges. Sometimes the different ball is the gift, because you walk in without preconceptions. Knowledge is limiting. Questions illuminate. Once you know something, you stop pursuing it. The questions you ask are the first constraints you put on knowledge. Get past the touchy-feely. Ask: "Tell me what's screwed up here." Problems are always there. Your job is to be willing to look for them. Check the cabinets. Living in a 700-square-foot LA apartment with his wife, Clark would open the cabinets and find them swarming with roaches. The building was fumigated. Two months later, they were back. You can move the pots out and stop checking, or you can keep opening the cabinets. Leaders keep opening the cabinets. Tell people what TO do, not what NOT to do. Rick Neuheisel's lesson. Stop coaching against the bad thing. Manifest what you want to have happen. Hire bunker guys, not logo people. Logos are easy to change. Hire people who'll fight for you in the bunker when it's hard. The Michigan Reset. Before his first game as Notre Dame defensive coordinator, Clark told the team's mental performance coach: "We're gonna be down 50 to nothing at halftime. BK's gonna fire me on the spot. Jerome Bettis and Rocket Ismail will be screaming at me in the tunnel." She asked, "Why don't you trust your players? You think this is all about you?" Have more captains. Clark sits in a room each summer with around 25 players he identifies as leaders. If the people at the leadership table are good, the locker room will be good. The team votes. He draws the line wherever the vote naturally falls. When you try to go opposite of what you're trying to avoid, you eventually become it. Clark spent his first years at Vanderbilt rejecting the program's past. Going opposite. Then he realized it was just attaching his identity to the very thing he was trying to escape. Now he plots toward the vision instead. What got you here won't keep you here. As Clark has grown, the program has grown. Once he understood that, he could sit with a player and listen first, instead of looking to them for affirmation. The mission is winning. Clark scrapped a beautiful, eloquent, unclear mission statement and replaced it with three words. Now every dollar spent, every coach hired, and every player retained is measured against the same lens. Well-better-learned. Vanderbilt's after-action review for every game and every process. What did we do well? What do we need to do better? What did we learn? On Alabama week, Clark's team had the best practice he's ever been a part of. His job each week isn't to tell the team the challenges. It's to give them the plan to win. At halftime against the number one team in the country, he kneeled the team down and said, "It's on a platter for you. Go take it." They beat Alabama.  Stewarding 17-to-22-year-olds means helping them decouple their worth from outcomes. Clark cries in front of his team. His kids are around. His wife is there. After two and a half years of searching for the perfect ontology to structure their knowledge graph, the team concluded that no perfect ontology exists. Their solution was to build the flattest possible graph structure with only events, entities, and edges, creating a base layer others can build specialized ontologies on top of.3. Graph-based knowledge systems are more efficient than traditional databases for AI traversal because once a graph is computed, it is relatively free to query. Graph RAG combines the discovery power of vector search with the structured precision of graph traversal, solving many hallucination problems associated with standard retrieval augmented generation.4. Basic scientific research, the soil from which applied discoveries grow, is deteriorating because institutional funding structures only reward commercially viable outcomes. The founder built his platform partly to redirect community-driven capital toward researchers who are doing important work without institutional support.5. The institutionalization of science has historically blocked the open exchange of ideas that drove the original scientific revolution. The human spirit for open inquiry has not changed, but people cannot pursue it without financial support, and building decentralized infrastructure could restore that possibility.6. A federated knowledge network would allow individuals to access information from any contributor and filter it through their own preferred lens, rather than receiving information pre-filtered by centralized platforms. This represents a form of information symmetry similar to how mycelial networks distribute nutrients across a forest.7. The concern is not whether current scientific and governmental institutions will change but in what direction the rebuilding goes. Those capitalizing on the transition carry the same incentives as the previous era, which risks reproducing the same problems inside new structures.
