#127 - This Wasn't the Plan: Andy Panko on Intentional Growth and True Freedom

What happens when your lifestyle practice takes off faster than you ever expected?Andy Panko, founder of Tenon Financial, didn't set out to build a firm. After leaving the corporate finance world in 2019, his goal was simple: work with 50 clients, enjoy flexibility, and ease into retirement on his own terms. But within two years, he was at capacity—and suddenly facing a new question: Now what?In this episode, Andy shares how he navigated that inflection point and grew Tenon Financial without sacrificing the lifestyle he set out to protect. Rather than hiring assistants or junior staff to “scale,” he took a different route—bringing on experienced advisors with decades of prior careers who operate independently with their own client bases. The result is a lean team of three serving more clients without compromising autonomy or quality of life.Andy opens up about his approach to hiring, compensation, and why he places intentional limits on growth. “I don't want the business to consume me,” he says. “Since I started Tenon, I've never once felt like I had to go to work.”We also dive into industry-wide tensions around product sales and compensation structures. Andy, who owns an IUL policy himself but regularly calls out misleading marketing, offers a nuanced view on where insurance fits—and where it goes wrong. If you're a solo advisor wondering what comes next—or just want to hear what it looks like to grow without giving up control—this conversation is a must-listen. As Andy puts it: “When you take ‘just being about money' off the table, it's actually very liberating.”Andy's links and Social:retirementplanningeducation.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/andypanko/

#STSNation! Welcome to the podcast that promises to bring you the very #BestGuests in all of #TrueCrime. The Jared Bridegan murder-for-hire case takes a shocking turn as Henry Tenon, the confessed gunman, backtracks on his previous testimony, claiming it was false. In response, defense attorneys for Shanna Gardner and Mario Fernandez successfully motioned to obtain Tenon's jail phone records, which could unravel the entire case. Judge London Kite also authorized the Secret Service to transfer encrypted evidence for forensic review. But wait...there's more. The alleged mastermind behind the murder, ex-wife Shanna Gardner, is also getting into trouble behind bars and she now has a new lover...and is gushing to her family about them. With Gardner and Fernandez facing murder charges for the ambush-style 2022 killing of Bridegan, this new development raises questions about Tenon's credibility and the future of the prosecution's case. We'll dig into all of this in today's episode.Get Joel's Book: Https://amzn.to/48GwbLxAll Things STS: Https://linktr.ee/stspodcastSupport the show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/SurvivingTheSurvivorCatch us live on YouTube: Surviving The Survivor: #BestGuests in True Crime - YouTube#JaredBridegan #ShannaGardner #MarioFernandez #HenryTenon #MurderForHire #TrueCrime #TrueCrimeCommunity #SurvivingTheSurvivor #CourtroomDrama #CriminalInvestigation #LegalUpdate #JusticeForJared #TrueCrimePodcast #murdermystery #truecrimepodcast

Gardner-Fernandez, heir to a multimillion-dollar papercraft business, is accused of orchestrating the execution-style murder of her ex-husband, 33-year-old Microsoft executive, Jared Bridegan.    Jared Bridegan was shot multiple times in an alleged ambush in February 2022 on a secluded Jacksonville Beach road. The incident took place shortly after Bridegan dropped off the twins he shared with Gardner-Fernandez at her residence.    Tragically, the Microsoft senior UX designer was gunned down in the presence of his two-year-old daughter from a subsequent marriage. The chilling act was committed in an area surrounded by dense trees, with no security cameras to record the heinous crime.    “Jared was lured to his death. For the murder to happen in that specific area, it's clear someone had planned it. There are no cameras or houses there, just trees on a one-way street,” expressed Kirsten, Bridegan's widow, in an interview with DailyMail.com.    The 61-year-old hitman, Danny Tenon, previously a tenant of Gardner-Fernandez's current husband, Mario Fernandez Saldana, admitted to the murder. Tenon disclosed that he had been contracted by Saldana-Fernandez for the crime. After his arrest on unrelated charges, Tenon also revealed his willingness to testify against his alleged co-conspirators.    Gardner-Fernandez, previously of Jacksonville, had shifted about 2,800 miles to the Pacific Northwest, after the incident, an area known for not having the death penalty. Law enforcement officials in Florida have, however, signified their intention to seek the death penalty for her crimes.    Many are closely watching this case, not just for its dramatic elements but due to the political implications with Governor DeSantis' involvement. The Jacksonville State Attorney's Office confirmed to DailyMail.com that the extradition order had been signed, sidelining an extradition hearing previously scheduled for Gardner-Fernandez.    The charges facing Gardner-Fernandez include first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Notably, if found guilty, she might be subjected to the death penalty in Florida, where five executions have already been conducted this year.    High-profile criminal defense attorney Hank Coxe, representing Gardner-Fernandez, previously declared intentions to contest the extradition. The warrant for her extradition is currently en route to Benton County, Washington.    Gardner-Fernandez's association with her new husband, Mario Fernandez Saldana, and the ensuing dramatic transformation in her behavior raised eyebrows among acquaintances. Once known as a straight-laced individual, she evolved into someone significantly bolder, even shocking tattoo parlor staff in 2015 with a request for a genital piercing.    The motivations behind this murder are speculated to revolve around a bitter custody battle over twins Liam and Abby, following the couple's separation in 2015.    Kirsten Bridegan expressed her sentiments regarding Gardner-Fernandez's arrest, stating, “There is satisfaction in knowing that the person I believe was the driving force behind this doesn't get the privileges that she allegedly took from Jared. I trust the prosecutors to make the best decision for the case, and if that is the death penalty, then we support that.”    The trial for Gardner-Fernandez is set to resume in Florida on October 5th. The case continues to attract significant attention due to its intricate ties of family, betrayal, and the weighty legal consequences involved. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In a NOT so shocking development, Shanna Gardner-Fernandez has been arrested in connection with the murder of Jared Bridegan. This comes months after the arrest of her new husband, Mario Fernandez Saldana, and the hitman Henry Tenon, who had already accepted a plea deal, shedding light on the intricate web of conspiracy behind this tragic killing.    As discussed on the popular podcast "Hidden Killers," hosted by Tony Brueski and featuring insights from former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, the arrest has prompted many questions. "It's been what, six, seven months or so since the arrest of Mario in this, and now her. She finally is arrested," Brueski mused. Given the relationships between the individuals involved - the victim being Gardner-Fernandez's ex-husband and Saldana allegedly ordering the hit - suspicions were rife from the start. Coffindaffer added, "I think right off the bat we all looked at this and went, well, it's her ex-husband and her current husband did the hit... She has to be involved in some way, shape, or form."    The authorities initially focused on Tenon, the hitman, securing his cooperation through a plea deal. Coffindaffer commended the approach, saying, "You always want to start with the lowest common denominator and dial in on him... but for the order of the hit, it is unlikely he would've just summarily gone out and killed Mr. Bridegan."    Subsequent to Tenon's arrest, Saldana's detainment provided further evidence from his electronic devices. As Coffindaffer elucidated, "We know after they arrested him, they just were able to get so much more information from his cellular phone, from his computers, from conducting those search warrants." This pivotal data - possibly including bank statements and communication records - became the linchpin in finally implicating Gardner-Fernandez in the crime. As Coffindaffer pointed out, "All they need are two overt acts on her part and they've got her. That combined with proof of the conspiracy."    Yet, the delay in her arrest suggests investigators were treading cautiously, amassing incontrovertible evidence. Brueski hypothesized, "Do you assume that over the course of the last many months, they've been watching her like a hawk in every single move that she makes and every single thing that she says?" Interestingly, Coffindaffer noted that Gardner-Fernandez had relocated from Florida, possibly in a calculated move to distance herself from the crime scene and potential witnesses.    Despite her relocation, it seems unlikely that law enforcement maintained constant surveillance on Gardner-Fernandez. "I don't believe law enforcement would've been surveilling her and on top of her in that regard," Coffindaffer stated. But, she conceded, they were likely monitoring "phone records, I think, to see who she might've been communicating with so that they could interview them."    This case serves as a stark reminder of the increasingly digital age we live in, where evidence isn't just based on eye-witness accounts or physical clues but is often "digitally extracted," as Coffindaffer aptly puts it. The twists and turns of the Bridegan murder case have kept the public on the edge of their seats, and as the trial progresses, even more shocking details are sure to emerge. In a gripping and tragic twist of events, the ex-wife of a high-ranking Microsoft executive, Jared Bridegan, has been indicted and charged with his gruesome murder in Jacksonville, Florida. State Attorney Melissa Nelson brought this shocking revelation to light during an intensive news briefing. The crime, which had previously baffled Florida law enforcement, is now unraveling, revealing the sordid details behind the calculated assassination of a loving father and accomplished professional.    Jared Bridegan was not just any software developer. He was a crucial asset to tech giant, Microsoft, and an affectionate father to four children. The cruel nature of his demise on February 16, 2022, left the community in shock. On that fateful evening, after responsibly ensuring the safety of his twin children in a Jacksonville Beach neighborhood, Jared encountered an unexpected obstacle. In a dimly-lit street lay a stray tire. As any good Samaritan would, he attempted to move it for the safety of others. Unbeknownst to him, this act of kindness would be his last. He was ambushed and shot multiple times, leaving his two-year-old daughter abandoned yet thankfully unharmed in her car seat.    The name at the heart of this scandal? Shanna Lee Gardner, aged 36. This startling development came as her former husband, Jared's wife, Kristen Bridegan, stated, "From the onset, everything within me believed she had a hand in this." But what could be the possible motive behind such a heinous act? The couple's tumultuous past reveals a trail of clues. Court records describe their divorce as "highly acrimonious", painting a picture of intense discord and a "contentious relationship" that extended even to Gardner's current husband, Mario Fernandez Saldana.    In another startling turn, it was divulged that the state is not only pursuing the death penalty against Shanna Gardner but also against Mario Fernandez Saldana. Represented by Jesse Dreicer, Fernandez Saldana firmly asserts his innocence. Dreicer, expressing faith in the forthcoming exoneration of his client, emphasized that, “He has pleaded not guilty and remains innocent until proven otherwise.”    However, the case took on more weight when the alleged hitman, Henry Arthur Tenon, aged 62, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. His plea came with a caveat: Tenon agreed to testify against both Fernandez Saldana and Gardner, drawing clear lines of connection between the parties involved.    State Attorney Nelson, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the crime, declared, “Henry Tenon didn't act in isolation. Mario Fernandez didn't devise this alone. Shanna Gardner's indictment underscores her pivotal involvement in Jared Bridegan's calculated assassination.”    Post the murder, as media interest spiked, Gardner found refuge far from Florida in West Richland, Washington. She staunchly maintained her innocence in interactions with the media. Nevertheless, an arrest warrant for Gardner surfaced, underscoring the tumultuous nature of her relationship with Bridegan.    In a heart-wrenching statement, Gardner's parents, Shelli and Sterling Gardner, expressed their profound grief, emphasizing the significance of family during such challenging times. They lovingly supported their daughter and highlighted the challenges faced by the grandchildren amidst this media frenzy, urging respect for privacy.    For the Bridegan family, this revelation isn't an end but merely a chapter closed. Kristin Bridegan, still grieving, said, “Shanna's arrest concludes a distressing chapter in our quest for justice for Jared. Yet, this is only the beginning. We anticipate a harrowing journey ahead but are determined to see justice served to its full extent.”    As the case unfolds, the world watches intently, anticipating further revelations and awaiting justice for a father whose life was taken all too soon. Eighteen months after the cold-blooded murder of Microsoft executive, Jared Bridegan, a shocking development emerged. The authorities, in a dramatic turn of events, arrested his ex-wife, Shanna Gardner-Fernandez, along with her new husband, Mario Saldana-Fernandez, on charges related to his brutal killing. On a quiet evening in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, in February 2022, Jared had just dropped off his twins from his previous marriage at Shanna's residence. On his way home with his youngest daughter, two-year-old Bexley, he was in the back seat when he came upon a tire deliberately placed in his path. This seemingly random obstruction soon proved to be a deadly trap. As he got out to move the tire, Jared was mercilessly gunned down, execution-style. The picturesque street, lined with trees and devoid of houses or surveillance, bore silent witness to the tragedy. Little Bexley, strapped in her car seat, was the only human observer to the chilling crime. The announcement of Shanna's arrest, supported by her indictment by a grand jury for first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, sent shockwaves throughout the community. Not only was Shanna charged, but her new husband, Mario, too found himself facing the possibility of the death penalty. The case, which had baffled detectives for months, broke open when hitman Henry Tenon, previously apprehended for unrelated offenses, confessed to executing the murder plot. Tenon's testimony revealed a web of deceit: he claimed he was hired by Mario Saldana-Fernandez. Interestingly, the connection between Tenon and Mario stemmed from a prior landlord-tenant relationship. Jared, 33 at the time of his death, was thriving in his career as a lead UX designer at Microsoft, earning a commendable $200,000 annually. He and his wife, Kirsten, lived a seemingly idyllic life in their $780,000 St. Augustine home, along with their two children. Regular visits to Jacksonville Beach, where his twins with Shanna lived, were part of Jared's commitment to being a present father, a commitment tragically cut short. Observers and close friends struggled to reconcile their image of Shanna as the mother of Jared's children with that of someone potentially involved in such a heinous act. Anecdotal accounts painted a picture of Shanna's dramatic transformation in recent years. Once described as a "goody two shoes," she stunned acquaintances with a 2015 visit to a tattoo parlor for a genital piercing. "She went from this goody two shoes girl to this wild lady. It's a total change," remarked a parlor employee. While their love story initially bloomed with promises of wealth and a bright future, Jared and Shanna's relationship became fraught with tension, culminating in their 2015 separation. The ensuing years were marked by a contentious custody battle over their twins. Jared went on to find love again, marrying Kirsten in 2017, while Shanna wed Mario the following year. The depth of animosity and the extreme lengths to which individuals can go have left the community grappling for answers. As legal proceedings intensify, those close to Jared, especially his widow Kirsten, ardently hope for justice, ensuring that his untimely death is neither forgotten nor in vain. As part of the plea agreement, Tenon will be sentenced to at least 15 years in prison, with the state dropping counts of conspiracy to commit murder, accessory after the fact to a capital felony, and child abuse. Tenon's guilty plea comes on the same day as the arrest of Mario Fernandez Saldana, the husband of Bridegan's ex-wife, who now faces charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit a capital felony, and child abuse. #JaredBrideganMurder #TenonGuiltyPlea #CoDefendantsRevealed Want to listen to ALL of our Podcasts Ad-Free? Jared Bridegan was gunned down in the Jacksonville, Florida, area in February of 2022. His two-year-old daughter was left in the vehicle unharmed but is thought to have witnessed her father's murder. Jared was a father of four. He had two young daughters with his current wife, Kirsten, and twins with his ex-wife Shanna Gardner-Fernandez. Jared's divorce from Shanna and the subsequent custody battle was extremely contentious. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss this currently developing case. One man named Henry Tenon has been arrested in connection with Jared's murder. This arrest has led to much speculation that more arrests may soon be coming after it came out that Tenon had a connection to Shanna's husband. The police have not released many details, but it has not stopped people from theorizing that it is possible that Jared's murder was orchestrated by someone who, at one time, had been very close to him. I'm making a chimney cupboard for the most difficult of clients – my wife. She really dislikes, frame and panel doors and wanted solid doors. So there will be two 40 inch high by 20 inch wide – full overlay doors. I'm using beautiful air dryer sinker Cypress for the entire piece. I've convinced her that big slabs of solid wood doors would potentially bow or twist overtime, so I have developed an idea of making each door like this - I've sourced a 26 inch wide 8 foot board. after milling and cutting to 44 inch pieces, I cut the middle out to be the panel and will use the adjoining pieces for the rail and styles. The panel will be tongue and grooved to sit flush with the front with the styles - with an 1/8 inch gap. Therefore, it will be a frame and panel door, but out of one piece of wood that looks solid. My question is relating to the inside panel and its thickness. It seems if I leave it thicker (currently 5/8”) it will be more prone to twisting the frame, where if I bring it down thinner like 3/8”, it may be more prone to splitting. Please let me know your thoughts . Thank you so much. Mike Sibley Hi Gents. Love the show. I've invested in a 3 stage sprayer and have been trying it out, getting the hang of it. Any General advice to a new sprayer user? Also, while a perfect coat is the goal, would it be better to put down too much, or too little of 'sprayables'? It seems too little is much easier to fix. Usually just add another coat after it's dried. Thanks for the great show! Mark Bett Brian's Questions: Guy's, I love the podcast and listen often but haven't caught completely up yet. What is a good method of making mortise and tenon jointery with a router only? I've got a Bosch 1/2” router and intent to buy a router table too. I've seen various jigs on the market but was wondering what the best option is for the money having only a router, and small DEWALT 8.5” lunchbox table saw. I intend to build smaller household furniture such as side tables, nightstands and a dresser. Thanks for the advice, love the show, Dave Huffman I would love to get a subscription to a woodworking magazine for my fiance for Christmas. He's a big fan of your podcast. You have mentioned one before but now I can't find it. What are your suggestions? - Lauren Zontini Huy's Questions I have a Dewalt 733 planer and the blades are starting to go dull. I saw online where I could build a jig out of a 2x4 by cutting 2 slots at 42 degrees angles and placing my blades inside the slots. You would then run the blades over a sharpening stone to give it a new edge. Is this a good method for sharpening my blade or should I be looking for another method. Keep making this podcast and I am sure that all of us out here listening will continue to tune in and keep asking questions. Happy Holidays to all of you Cory Sorry if this is a repeat only mostly caught up. The wife wants a painted double dresser. I dislike painted furniture and prefer to work with maple or walnut but we compromised… so the wife's getting a painted double dresser. I intend to use plywood since it's a paint grade project but don't have much experience with it. What's a good construction method for plywood? I've got a small table saw, 1/2” router, kreg jig and hand tools. Can I get way with using the kreg jig and but joints for carcass construction? How about plywood drawers? I intend to use latex paint, should I add a top coat over it? Many Thanks, love the podcast Dave Huffman
