Are you better off as a surgeon or in palliative care? MD/PhD student Jacqueline Nielsen, M2 Hend Al-Kaylani, and M1 Fallon Jung play with personality to see if their path toward choosing the right medical specialty should be dependent on their personality traits. From the introspective nature of psychiatry to the rapid decision-making required in emergency medicine, Dave and crew explore how tests like The Big 5 or Meyers Briggs might influence their specialty choices. Some question the scientific validity of most personality testing, but the Big Five has some evidence behind it, so Dave also created a custom GPT to analyze their test results and suggest best (and worst) specialties for all of them. This episode also touches upon the broader implications of these choices on personal satisfaction and professional success in medicine. Also, we ponder our consumption of news and its impact on mental health and the Kate Middleton mystery's hold on the world.

This is probably stating the obvious, but there is more than one type of personality. Eric Gee has spent countless hours and many years perfecting a system of personality typing that is less rigid than the Meyers-Briggs system (MBTI) and also much easier to remember and grasp. Defining sixteen different 'animal' types and arranging them into four logical 'packs,' Eric consistently captures people's imaginations as he takes them deeper into this world. You can take his test by going to www.youtopiaproject.com, and you can pick up his book "The Power of Personality," when it hits the stores this April. You can also pre-order it now.
In today's episode, we get in touch with the "F"...feelings. We accidentally talk about our Meyers-Briggs personalities and thoughts of the Icepocolypse. We share our current favs. We also discuss our favorite and least favorite romance tropes and our OTPS (including Phil and Keely, Sonny and Chad, Logan and Quinn, Miraculous Ladybug and Cat Noir, Nick and Jess, and more). Conversations include us being competitive and fictionally fluent; spoiling Avatar: The Last Airbender; deciding Carly Shea is Elain; being okay with fictional step-sibling flirtations; and craving the slowest of slowburns. Today's guest, NYU Coach Andrew Brown, is the head coach of the highly successful (29-7 record and advanced to the NCAA DIII Tournament Final Four 2022 season) New York University's Women's Volleyball Team. Coach Brown sits down with Kirsten to talk about how his program has changed from the jungle tiger - practicing ugly mentality to playing from the top and being the hunted vs the hunter. He speaks to how you show up after success, when opponents are so motivated to take you down. Kirsten and Andrew talk about how to onboard 5-7 new players, and not overload them in the pre-season. And, he talks about how they bring in consultants to give data and science (think Meyers-Briggs) to give another tool in his athletes toolbox for not just volleyball, but life in general. A fascinating discussion on mindset, grit, expectations, culture and really finding out who your team is! Ashley is an Inner Child Guide, Self-Love Mentor, and social worker gone rogue! (her clients like to call her the ego whisperer) She works with women who can't stand the thought of another vanilla talk therapy session, she creates a space for their egos to feel safe and get to the root cause for why they feel stuck in life. Her method, The Unicorn Effect, works to peel back the layers of societal conditioning, programming, and trauma, so that they can experience a whole new level of self-love. And no, she doesn't mean wine Wednesdays, and bubble baths —she teaches her clients how to connect with themselves in the purest form, where true, authentic self-love is born, to figure out who you REALLY are!Using her social work background and her expertise on the impact of childhood traumas, she began supporting women to heal the innermost parts of themselves and say sayonara to another Meyers Briggs test. She guides women on their journey to clear out the noise that has been running their life and holding them back from their answers within. In this episode, we're diving into the self discovery movement and what it really means to uncover who you really are (without or without those popular methods to do it!).Highlights from the episode: How personality and self-discovery tools can act as a crutch or a distraction from our true selvesThe importance of inner child healing, forgiveness, and real authentic self love for our pastWhat self-care truly means (and no, she's not talking about Wine Wednesdays)Intentional living, what that means and how to do it yourselfHow to honor and conquer fears The power in vulnerability, self-reflection, boundary settingResources:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ash_abramson/Website: bigmiracleenergy.comwww.patreon.com/bigmiracleenergy
We all want a more fulfilling life and more happiness, but I would say I would vouch for more fulfillment. I can be happy doing things around my house but fulfillment that carries more weight. Today I am going to talk about these 3 things to add more fulfillment to your life. Get your journals out and be ready to take some note. 1. Self reflection. This is all about going inward to get to know yourself on a deeper level. The books I mention are as follows. Meyers Briggs personality test, Enneagram testing, Wealth Dynamics 2.0 (Roger Hamilton) and Strength Finder 2.0 All of these tools will give you a better understanding of the deeper version of you and therefore lead you in a more fulfilling direction when it comes to making decisions regarding your life. 2. Setting Goals. Don't groan it's going to be ok. I would venture to guess that its not the actual goal you hate but that you can't accomplish it, or haven't accomplished many goals in the past. Here's the trick. Getting your "body" on board with the goal. Once this happens not only do you achieve the goal at a must faster rate but you have more fun doing it. 3. Problem solving. Figure out how you can "think" of a solution to the problem. Look at the problem objectively and what you need to solve it. When you can think your way to the solution you will be much more confidence when it comes to challenges in your life. 290 Ideation Working on ourselves is a never ending yet very worthwhile endeavor that shapes who we become as people, and where we want to go in life. Sometimes that work is hard and can seem intimidating or at the very least tedious, especially if our strengths have been criticized or used against us in the past. However, like anything worth doing, growing as an individual takes hard work and support, especially from yourself. In this episode Sarah Elkins poses this thought to the listeners of Your Stories Don't Define You How You Tell Them Will, and implores us to look inward and begin to see our strengths as things that can benefit us instead of hinder us. Highlights Love your talents because they make you who you are even if you sometimes struggle with them. Practicing what you have learned and want to learn will improve your skills both new and old. Allowing yourself to flow in whatever way you need to go. Quotes “One thing I became aware of in the first year of my coaching practice, is that I have to be very careful not to project my own feelings onto my clients.” “The space between stimulant and response and the choice we have in that space. Will we give that stimulant a positive, negative, or neutral value?” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, Have you reacted defensively to frustration after seeing the results of an assessment, maybe like the Clifton Strengths, Meyers-Briggs, Enneagram, or Disc? What are the memories that are surfacing after seeing those qualities that were criticized in the past, and what stories can you begin to collect as evidence of those results as beneficial in your life as strengths. And, as always, thank you for listening. About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Job Interview Storytelling Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!
Today we're speaking with the wonderful Kathy Tagenel, President of Go-Givers International, all about a tool called the Kolbe A Index. My initial discussions with Kathy were eye-opening to say the least. I've taken 'em all, Meyers Briggs, and other EQ/IQ tests as a new student x4 growing up. This Index was probably the most impactful of all, I only wish I had access to it when I was in middle school! In this episode we cover:- How to unlock your innate abilities and harness the Kolbe Index information to help make your life more fulfilling- What an innate ability is. Hint: you were born with these.- How EQ and IQ testing is different from taking a look at the "conative" approach- A quick 101 on the Kolbe A Index and my experience with it- How your innate abilities can support others and vice versa. There are many ways people are trying to know themselves these days – from taking the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test to analyzing their astrological birth charts to identifying their attachment styles. I am a HUGE fan of any kind of personality inventory. From the Meyers-Briggs to the enneagram, I find them fascinating. Recently I came across a website claiming to have given God a personalty assessment. This immediately had my attention and led me through a process of discovery that sparked today's question and, more to the point, why this is important. ———————————————————————————————————————. Sarah is in a war with her neighbor, and Susie is strategizing ways to torment him. Sarah thinks they're in a competition for who will open their blinds, but mostly she's mad that he doesn't have a sense of whimsy. This is the most low-states feud in history. Sarah says the personality test to which you subscribe says more about your personality than the results of the personality test itself. It's confusing. Basically, if you love astrology, enegram, or Meyers-Briggs, it says a lot about who you are. Susie hates all of them equally, and that says that she is just an a-hole. We discuss how famous men rebound easily from their public scandals, but Sarah thought of a woman who seems to have avoided consequences for her crimes. We discuss why the hole in the ozone layer seems to be repaired and why it is probably a fluke. We hear why ice cream is actually healthy and nutritionists have been trying to keep it from you for decades. Speaker, dancer, energy healer, Dondi Dahlin is the author of “The Five Elements.” The five elements are a 2,000-year-old system similar to Meyers-Briggs that provide another way of understanding personalities and improving relationships. Dondi will teach us why learning about the Five Elements can make a difference in our lives and how we can use this system to our benefit. In this episode, join me to have a conversation about positivity and how we need this force in our life to combat negativity. I want to use this platform as a ripple to reach more people in order to positively impact my community and the world. Sure, there are moments when negativity takes over, and there are even times when the benefit of negativity can be felt and understood (listen to the episode to hear more about that!). But, making more time for positivity cannot be a bad thing for us. Here are three reasons why you should listen to this episode: Hear stories about how I take negativity and transform it. Uncover the hidden depths within yourself where you can access more positivity. Connect with the energy of gratitude and maintain what you already have instead of striving for more in order to feel positive. Giving some of our time to what is going well. As a “J” on the Meyers Briggs, seeing the negative happens a lot for me, so I want to spend time on what's going well. Let things be what they are and notice the good in them. Nothing is perfect anyway, so why not see the best in things when you can? You don't have to believe all of your thoughts- both positive and negative. [07:21] Synchronicities and Magic Sometimes the cause between things happening doesn't seem related but they are or we can connect them in our own mind. Listen to this section for a story about an interview I did in a past episode. The change you want to experience in your life can happen without you striving or trying for it. How can you slow down and receive? It can be relieving to think that there are forces at work that are outside of our human ability to perceive that can be helping us. Sometimes slow is fast. Being guided and learning is sending the message that you don't know everything and you're open to having your mind expanded. What you need is inside of you. [14:06] Grab a Journal and Ask Yourself These Questions: What is this resistance trying to teach me? What could I learn from this situation? What is missing that I'm trying to fill in right now? Do I need what I'm trying to fill in? Is the thing I'm using to fill this void actually serving me? [14:41] Being In The Cycle of Giving and Receiving is Positive It's hopeful to see yourself in this light. You are resilient and capable of doing great things. Be your own cheerleader. Take time to celebrate your wins, milestones, and efforts. What is the point of reaching goals if we don't mark the occasion? [18:09] Back To Magic - Synchronicities and Numbers Noticing numbers in sequence helps me to feel positive, hopeful, and that I'm on the right path. Astrology and seasonal alignment can be inspirational as well. You can make the connections between what numbers and what they mean to you. Building a strong connection to your own intuition. [20:55] Mindfulness and Positivity Noticing neutral or pleasant emotions or sensations within yourself can be helpful. Sometimes we have to feel the suffering to get to the joy of life. Being able to define suffering is what helps us be able to define joy. Let giving space to positivity a daily practice. Seek assistance from a professional to work through these difficult emotions. [25:24] Social Media - Can It Be Used for Positivity? I am currently taking a break from social media. Listen to this section to hear how I used Pinterest to pour into myself rather than feel bad about scrolling. Use your brain chemistry to your advantage- if it feels bad, don't do it. If it feels good, do it. If you are on a certain social media platform for a reason such as trying new recipes or art techniques, challenge yourself to actually try one of them this week as opposed to scrolling. [31:43] Not Using Winter as An Excuse to Cut Yourself Off If you've been hibernating all winter without contact with friends, it might be contributing to a negative feeling. As humans, we don't need as much hibernation as the earth- our life span is a lot shorter. You can decide if you have energy or not- you don't have to stay inside just because it's winter. You're allowed to start new things even in winter. Flow with your joy and inspiration. The human nervous system needs connection with other humans to feel nourished. If you have been withdrawn, your nervous system might be starving or thirsty. Ask yourself what's the worst that will happen if you let yourself go out and be social. You might find that if you do it, you will have more energy and positivity. [37:49] Conflicting Voices Can Make Positivity Hard - But They Can Be Dealt With We are conditioned to think there is a perfect time for taking action or a better way to do something. How to confront this voice in a loving way by asking it some questions. Setting boundaries with ourselves can be hard, but it's worth it. It's showing yourself self love. Sometimes life is risky and we have to start taking chances in order to feel the bliss and pride we want to feel. Just because something is scary, doesn't mean it's dangerous. When you stretch yourself outside of your comfort zone, you realize you're growing. Climb the mountain within to feel more positive. [40:15] Positivity is Maintaining What We Already Have Taking care of what we already have can help us feel more positive. Gratitude makes way for appreciation and contentment. If we want to add something new, needing to tend to the “old” or what's already there- take an inventory before adding something new. [41:58] I'm Not An Expert on Positivity I need more positivity in my life which is why I'm doing this episode! To learn more from the experts, look up the University of Penn's school of Positive Psychology. I want to be a ripple of positivity in the world. Enjoyed this Episode on Positivity? Episode 116 of our book read/podcast covering major topics in various fields of psychology moves us into a continuation of the Year of Clickbait with PSEUDOSCIENCE! This Spring we are going to be talking about pseudoscience. Who believes it? Why do they believe it? Is there a kernel of truth to some of the pseudoscientific beliefs people have? And more… In this episode Thomas and Daniel discuss psychology related pseudoscience: parapsychology, pseudo-belief, and handwriting analysis. Psychology is rife with things that seem to make sense but have no merit in research or actual reality. On one hand we discuss the history of parapsychology and attempts to codify the unknown in grounded research. On the other hand we examine graphology, a field that, like the Meyers-Briggs, just isn't valid in modern psychology but is still used today. Both as well, are super popular in the U.K. compared to the U.S. Warning: This episode contains some graphic information and all season we will be talking about some less than savory topics. Does the color of clothing you wear affect the arguments you have with your significant other? Can seasons help you to be on the same page as your best friends? Honestly, I'm not so sure. But my guest is an expert in Chinese Medicine which breaks personalities into five core energy types based on elements of nature. My guest today is Dr. Vicki Matthews. Vicki has been a Naturopathic Physician and Relationship Coach for over 20 years now. Her passion stems from wanting to help society become less conflicted: reducing lawsuits, divorces, and disagreements. After some psychological research, she found that people tend to fall in line with the elements of the Five Elements Model from Chinese Medicine. It can be pretty easy to get lost in some of the softer science of this topic and its impact on your relationships. But if you enjoy Meyers-Briggs, Astrology, or any of the other alternative practices out there: you're probably going to love this one. And listen, if it's totally not your thing: that's okay too. The next episode is going to be a much more data driven episode on relationships and the reasons they fail, so come back around for that just in time for engagement season! Let's get out of our element! Please take a brief moment to rate the show five stars on iTunes, Spotify, or Audible. When it comes to personality types, there is Meyers Briggs and StrengthsFinder, among others. But Grant Nichols uses a more general term when describing himself: entrepreneurial. He constantly brainstorms new business ideas, researches their market potential, and vets the project's viability with his friends and family. Grant founded his current business, BluWave Technologies, to help manufacturing companies increase operational efficiency.
Balancing, Pivoting, and Innovating Through DiversityIn this episode of The Outspoken Podcast, host Shana Cosgrove talks to Jennifer Walsmith, Vice President of Cyber and Information Solutions at Northrop Grumman. Shana and Jennifer talk about the capacity for remote work to broaden access to decision-makers and increase organizational agility. Jennifer talks about her 20+ years at NSA—from a GS-2 to being the Senior Acquisition Executive (SAE)—and her experiences earning a degree in computer science, leaving government for a stint in industry, and prioritizing her family all along the way. She describes her role in relation to Northrop Grumman's Global Ballistic Strategic Deterrent contract, developing and then seeing through their pivot to cyber solutions. Lastly, Jennifer tells Shana why she originally picked computer science over engineering and describes her surprise when a recent Meyers-Briggs test indicated that she may not be as extroverted as she thought.QUOTES“As you go through a major change, they used to talk about it in the terms of sailing [ . . . ] When you decide to tack to get better wind, it's so important that you not get caught in what is called irons, which is that lull as you are trying to move to the new wind. Along the way we also mention Popular Woodworking, fixing things on the back end, hiding your own Easter eggs, 18 hour warnings, easy undergrad majors, Meyers-Briggs career predictions, picking an ideal advisor, SASholes, demyelination, hearing asterisks, being an ANCOVist, the 11th Commandment, what keeps you up at night, answering the question you want to, and it's all BS.
