Marc Dorcel crée un empire du porno dans les années 80. Pourtant pour Marcel Herskovits les choses n'ont pas bien commencé. Marc se rêvait en artiste mais sa famille veut qu'il travaille à l'usine. Il fera de l'ajustage industriel… puis il ouvre sa société de transports avec l'argent familial mais fait faillite. Marc ne se décourage pas pour autant et se lance dans la vente de livres par correspondance. Les temps sont durs mais il ne lâche rien et commence à vendre des livres à l'eau de rose puis érotiques. La réussite est là. Puis un jour, avec l'idée d'un voisin, il fait un 1er film avec un tout petit budget, Jolies petites garces. C'est un carton. Il se lance alors dans la production de films X et enchaîne les succès. Son credo ? Le porno chic ! Ses films sont même diffusés sur Canal +, dans Le Journal du Hard. Le nom Marc Dorcel est partout dans le milieu du porno. Pourtant la fin des années 1990 et l'arrivée d'internet, commence à tailler des croupières dans le business juteux de Dorcel. C'est l'arrivée de son fils, Grégory Dorcel, qui va tout changer. 'Deep Throat' the 1972 adult film that took industry mainstream is receiving a Golden Anniversary 4K restoration and limited theatrical rerelease this summer. The 1970s were definitely interesting times. There was a war in Vietnam, a sexual revolution, Roe v Wade was a landmark case and a new wave of filmmakers had taken the industry by storm coming fresh out of the universities instead of being trained by the studies. Part of that sexual revolution of the era was the adult film industry going mainstream and that is thanks to a movie by Gerard Damiano Sr. entitled 'Deep Throat'. I had always assumed the movie was named after the Richard Nixon informant nickname, but it turns out as, Gerard Damiano Jr. corrected me in the interview, it was the other way around. He even mentions that former first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis stood in line with the crowd in New York City to be apart of all the buzz. Now, as we hit the 50th Anniversary celebration of the landmark film in the fight for freedom of speech, 'Deep Throat' receives a 4K Restoration for the limited theatrical rerelease. Today we'll focus on two massive, X-rated hits released within a year of one another in 1972-1973: Deep Throat, the first hardcore porn movie to become a mainstream blockbuster; and the international art film sensation Last Tango in Paris. Both of these hits were products of a male-centered sexual revolution, and both of their female stars later described making these movies as equivalent to being raped. Professor Whitney Strub joins us to talk about his books: Perversion for Profit: The Politics of Pornography and the Rise of the New Right (2010), Obscenity Rules: Roth v. United States and the Long Struggle over Sexual Expression (2013), and this co-edited anthology with Carolyn Bronstein titled, Porno Chic and the Sex Wars: American Sexual Representation in the 1970s (2016). We talk about his historical approach to porn studies, New-Right censorship strategies of the post-war era, the important obscenity trials that have formed the obscenity laws that we’re familiar with today, and we talk about how is new edited collection is fighting against our commonly held assumptions of the “Golden Age” of porn in the 1970s. And after the interview, we take you on an audio tour of New Jersey’s last porn theater, the Little Theater. Which opened in Newark in 1929, and has been showing pornography since the 1970s. In 1972 audiences around the country stood in long lines to get a look at "Deep Throat," the first mainstream pornographic film to be reviewed by Variety. Some people loved it, some hated it but everyone had an opinion. In the 4 years that followed a slew of big budget porn films would capitalize on this craze in what would eventually be called "Porno Chic." And then just a quickly as it started, it was over.
