This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 20205 edition of the just-concluded Rendez-vous with French Cinema with Being Maria cast members Matt Dillon and Anamaria Vartolomei. Being Maria is now in select theaters, courtesy of Kino Lorber. Actors don't choose roles,” actor Daniel Gélin (Yvan Attal) tells his daughter Maria Schneider (Anamaria Vartolomei). “Roles choose them!” After her galvanizing performance as a young woman seeking out an illegal abortion in Audrey Diwan's Happening (ND/NF 2022), Vartolomei delivers another indelible portrait of a woman in extremis with writer-director Jessica Palud's second feature, moving beyond Schneider's encounter with director Bernardo Bertolucci on the set of Last Tango in Paris, during the shoot of the infamous “get the butter” scene (which the actress repeatedly identified as a violation of her consent), to contemplate the actress's larger life and legacy. The shoot itself is meticulously reconstructed—featuring a remarkable turn by Matt Dillon as Schneider's significantly more famous costar and scene partner, Marlon Brando—in order to contextualize the private and public fallout from Schneider's equally iconic and traumatizing breakout performance. Palud was herself an assistant director for Bertolucci at age 19 (the same age Schneider was during the production of Last Tango) and brings a welcome eye for complexity to an unsparing, compassionate reframing of a much-discussed incident—rooted firmly in the perspective of the actress at its center. This conversation was moderated by FLC Assistant Programmer Madeline Whittle.
My guest today is Joshua Rosenblum, author of Closer than Ever — The Unique Six-Decade Songwriting Partnership of Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire. This terrific new book chronicles the sixty-six-year (and counting) partnership of two of the most gifted songwriters of our time, giving full behind-the-scenes accounts of their musicals interspersed with deep-dive analyses of standout individual numbers. Among the well-known Broadway figures who feature prominently in the Maltby/Shire story are Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Michael Stewart, Francis Ford Coppola, Susan Stroman, John Weidman, Charles Strouse, Garth Drabinsky, Jason Robert Brown, and Jonathan Tunick. Using his experiences as a Broadway conductor, music journalist, and professor of musical theater composition, as well as his long-term personal and professional acquaintance with both Maltby and Shire, Joshua Rosenblum is uniquely suited to chronicle their lives, careers, and creative output. The songwriters, both of whom are engaging and articulate in describing what they do, are quoted liberally throughout the book in exclusive interviews, creating the impression that one is spending time with two inspiring creative artists who happen to be great company. Joshua Rosenblum teaches Composing for Musical Theater at Yale University and Conducting at New York University. As a composer/lyricist, he wrote the scores to the off-Broadway musicals Fermat's Last Tango, Bush is Bad, and Einstein's Dreams (four Drama Desk Nominations). He has conducted fourteen Broadway and off-Broadway shows and has performed as pianist with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, the City Center Encores! Orchestra, and the American Symphony. A longtime contributor of reviews and features to Opera News, Rosenblum is a summa cum laude graduate of Yale College and holds a master's degree in Piano from the Yale School of Music. The Blockbuster Babes reunite with Breakfast host Pam Boland for the latest edition of Movie Squad, discussing a couple of films about… couples! First up, Tristan Fidler leads a review of Bong Joon-ho's long-awaited Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson as a regularly-reprinted ‘expendable' clone who survives his '17th death' on a remote ice planet and accidentally meets his successor, Mickey 18, also played by Pattinson. Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette star alongside the double Roberts in the latest from the South Korean director of Parasite. Then, Simon Miraudo reviews the second Steven Soderbergh film of 2025 (after last month's Presence): the slinky espionage thriller Black Bag, in which Michael Fassbender's married MI5 agent begins investigating his spy wife, played by Cate Blanchett, of a suspected betrayal. Black Bag also features Marisa Abela, Regé-Jean Page and Naomie Harris. Both films are now in Australian cinemas. Stay tuned for a pod-exclusive review of Grand Theft Hamlet, the hilarious new documentary about out-of-work actors attempting to stage a production by William Shakespeare entirely within the open world video game GTA. Then, hear Simon's chat with Jessica Palud, director of Being Maria, which stars Anamaria Vartolomei as actress Maria Schneider and follows Maria as a 19-year-old on the set of Last Tango in Paris, and how her life was altered by a shocking and unprompted on-camera violation by her co-star Marlon Brando and director Bernardo Bertolucci. Being Maria makes its Australian Premiere at the Alliance Francaise French Film Festival. Check out its showtimes here. Be sure to tune in to RTRFM every Friday at 7:30am to hear Movie Squad live on Breakfast with Pam! And find out more about Movie Squad's curation of Throwback Thursdays at Joondalup Festival in March!

We've all heard that it takes two to tango. But have you ever known anyone who ever tried tangoing? No, you haven't. Is tangoing even a word? Everyone has tried to Limbo, but even though these two world renowned dances sound like they could be kissing cousins, their originations came from opposite sides of the world and have very little in common. In fact, tangoing appears to be a hell of a lot more difficult. Not that I've ever attempted it. Nor has anyone you and I know. To limbo, it's all about being a little tipsy at a luau. But if you tango tipsy, you're probably going to end up with a concussion. And a busted knee. Not that it can't happen while limboing, it's just less probable. By the way, limboing is a word. Now, if you watch highlights of the summer Olympic games, you might catch the tango competition. Otherwise, there's hardly anywhere to see people tango. Not even in movies really. There was even a movie called Last Tango in Paris with Marlon Brando, but I don't recall any tangoing. And on Nat Geo you might catch a male bird attempting a tango to attract a mate, but for humans that overzealous act would come off as sex repellant. Because I witnessed a hippy dude rocking a tutu while smoking a joint in the city park. He was gyrating like one of those fan-blown air dancers you see out in front of a used car lot. No one would come close to him. At times it might have resembled a tango, but he didn't have a partner. And according to the idiom, it's not a tango unless there's two people. Does that mean he was in limbo? Sometimes I feel like I'm in limbo. So, I smoke two joints. I call it the Tangie Tango.

In this interview I talk with artist and activist Art Hazelwood about art as political action versus politics as a subject. We start with his journey as a printmaker in San Francisco in the early 90s, where he engaged in political art through the Street Sheet newspaper. He elaborates on the distinction between social commentary and political action, emphasizing his active role in various causes including homelessness and union support. We also talk about his work with the San Francisco Poster Syndicate and teaching drawing at San Quentin prison, highlighting the importance of art as a transformative tool within the prison system. Additionally, we talk about his involvement in Mission Gráfica, a print studio, and his efforts in cataloging artists' estates. The conversation touches on the evolving role of artists, the value of ephemeral art, and the challenges and opportunities within the art world today. Loose Ends is in Hebden Bridge this week, a town made famous by the BBC drama Happy Valley, but you might also recognise the place and its glorious scenery from Last Tango in Halifax, Gentleman Jack or The Gallow's Pole. Clive will talk to local resident and bestselling novelist Joanne Harris, maybe best known for Chocolat which was adapted into an Oscar nominated film of the same name. Her latest book The Moonlight Garden is a fantasy set in a "long ago and far away" version of London and fits right into the wildly popular "romantasy" genre - a good fit for a town renowned for its quirky ways and alternative lifestyles. Also in the show, the acclaimed comedian and actor Richard Blackwood, best known for roles in Hollyoaks and EastEnders as well as on stage, is out on the road and passing through town on a stand up tour promising heavyweight laughs and no messing. TV presenter, GP and host of Europe's most popular wellness podcast Dr Ranjan Chatterjee will be easing us all into the New Year, just about the time when we all begin to fall off the New Year resolutions wagon and we'll be hearing about what happened to his own long held ambition to be Jon Bon Jovi. And award wining stand-up comedian and Hebden resident Nina Gilligan will explain why her new show is called Goldfish. Music from former I am Kloot frontman John Bramwell and band The Full Harmonic Convergence and also from all female Indie-folk band The Deep Blue. Presented by Clive Anderson Produced by Olive Clancy

This week we've got an amazing guest - of this I am sure.Nunzio himself, actor Jonathan Del Arco, is hanging out with the gang and looking back on his scene-stealing turn as a dancing waiter in the Season 5 episode, “Last Tango in Philly.” There aren't many actors in Hollywood who made the jump from The Wonder Years and Blossom to The Sopranos and Star Trek, but he somehow pulled it off, all while navigating the unwelcoming waters for gay actors in 1990s Hollywood. In addition to his incredible on-screen career, Jonathan has become a philanthropic force, working with 5 Presidential campaigns and winning the 2013 Visibility Award from the Human Rights Campaign. But even with all these accomplishments, he still has some words for Rider about a long-standing grudge he has with the Strong boys. This week we've got some Hot Stuff to recap! It might be a meme-friendly and beloved BMW episode, but the gang still has some major questions! Is this Mexican restaurant just an alternate universe Chubbies? Is dancing with a man cheating on your boyfriend? And WTF is going on with the side/front/sidewalk yard? Another guest star steals the show and Fenny's salad plate is starting to look full. Plus, Will and Rider take us behind the scenes of the iconic dance sequence to find out what the legendary Bill Daniels might have personally choreographed - on a brand new Pod Meets World!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Shuchi Talati's first feature-length film, "Girls Will Be Girls", tells the story of 16-year-old Mira, a model student at an elite Himalayan boarding school who gets swept up in a budding romance with a new male student. Things get complicated when Mira's mother inserts herself into their relationship. Talati says she wanted to tell a story about sexual awakening without the shame she experienced in her own adolescence. While the film's dynamic has been described as a love triangle, she says it's really about two generations of women trying to push back against societal boundaries. Plus, film critic Lisa Nesselson tells us about Jessica Palud's "Being Maria", which explores how French actress Maria Schneider was traumatised by a now-infamous sex scene in the 1972 film "Last Tango in Paris".

Movie of the Year: 1973Last Tango in ParisThis week we discuss The Last Tango in Paris! Can a movie this uncomfortable to talk about be our Movie of the Year?Last Tango in Paris is the story of Paul, an extremely recently widowed man whose relationship with his wife was complicated, and Jeanne, a 19 year old who comes to find herself completely dominated and enthralled by him. Meeting by chance one day, they enter into a sexual relationship in which their first encounters are totally anonymous and pretty upsetting to at least one viewer.Jeanne is both parts repulsed and drawn to Paul, and she is also seeing Tom, a young, boring film maker, who seems to think you can do whatever you want if you're making a movie at the same time. Jeanna becomes increasingly desperate to flee from Paul as he becomes increasingly sure that he is in love with her until she shoots and kills him. But all this has been largely lost in the cultural memory of this movie, replaced by one scene where Paul rapes Jean using butter as lubricant.Speaking of the infamous scene, actress Maria Schneider later said “They only told me about it before we had to film the scene and I was so angry. I should have called my agent or had my lawyer come to the set because you can't force someone to do something that isn't in the script, but at the time, I didn't know that." She has also said that this scene traumatized her and stole her youth. Is it possible to reckon with this scene and the damage it caused and then move past that to also say anything meaningful about the movie?Would this scene kinda ruin the movie even without it hurting Schneider as it did?We get into it.Visit our websiteUse our Amazon page!Like us!Follow us!Abortion is healthcareWhile Americans overwhelmingly support the right of an individual to make their own decisions about abortion, unfortunately, that right is no longer protected everywhere in the U.S.The Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade on June 24th.Abortion is a basic healthcare need for the millions of people who can become pregnant. Billed as the hottest Hollywood film since Last Tango, 9 ½ Weeks was considered to have missed the mark by everyone who made it – including director Adrian Lyne, stars Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger, producer/writer Zalman King and his wife, writer Patricia Knop. Today we'll talk about why this intoxicating and troubling film is worth a second look, how to square away the arguably feminist finished product from a production process that robbed Basinger of agency, and we'll explore the film Rourke and King re-teamed on as a re-do, Wild Orchid. We'll also talk about Rourke's “bad boy” persona, and his problematic relationship with his second wife and co-star, supermodel Carre Otis. Learn more about your ad choices. Today we'll focus on two massive, X-rated hits released within a year of one another in 1972-1973: Deep Throat, the first hardcore porn movie to become a mainstream blockbuster; and the international art film sensation Last Tango in Paris.
