Guest: Dr. Levi Boggs, Georgia Tech Research InstituteWhen we think of lightning, we picture bolts striking the ground during a thunderstorm—but not all electrical activity stays within the lower atmosphere. High above the clouds, mysterious and fleeting flashes of light dance across the sky—sprites, blue jets, and gigantic jets—phenomena that are still not fully understood. Today on Weather Geeks, we're exploring the enigmatic world of upper atmospheric electrical phenomena with Dr. Levi Boggs, whose latest research is shedding new light on these elusive events. From cutting-edge observations to the impact these events may have on aviation, space weather, and even our understanding of lightning itself, we're thrilled to have Dr. Boggs here to break it all down!Chapters00:00 Introduction to Upper Atmospheric Electrical Phenomena04:58 Transient Luminous Events: Types and Characteristics10:58 Differences Between TLEs and Traditional Lightning16:02 Observing TLEs: Opportunities and Challenges20:58 Research Focus: Gigantic Jets and Their Impacts25:14 Challenges in Studying Transient Luminous Events28:22 The Importance of Observations in TLE Research31:31 Field Campaigns and Citizen Science33:05 Understanding Lightning Through TLE Research36:24 Future Aspirations in TLE ResearchSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Navigating PCS Chaos, Saving Money, and Finding Adventure! PCSing is a constant in military life, often bringing stress, extra costs, and confusion. But it doesn't have to be a nightmare! In this episode, we dive deep into practical tips and strategies to help you survive your next Permanent Change of Station (PCS), save money, and maybe even make it an adventure. We cover everything from getting your paperwork in order to leveraging financial benefits and preparing your family for the journey. In this episode, we discuss key strategies for managing your PCS: Getting Organized & Paperwork: The importance of physical binders and electronic backups for documents. Tips for outprocessing checklists and hand-carrying essential items like orders, Power of Attorneys, birth certificates, passports, and social security cards. Keep vital documents separate from movers. Financially Preparing: The crucial need to start saving cash early for unreimbursed expenses. Access to liquid money helps with stress management and avoiding debt. Cutting expenses is the first step to saving. Understanding Financial Benefits: Dislocation Allowance (DLA): An entitlement can be taken as an advance upfront (not a loan). Rates vary by pay grade and dependents (e.g., O-5 w/ dependents $5,339, E-4 w/ dependents $3,400 in 2025).  PCS Pay Advance: Option for up to one month's base pay, interest-free, paid back over 12 months. A tool for necessary situations, better than high-interest loans. Moving Your Stuff (HHG government move vs. PPM): Options include full government shipment (through TMO) or the Personally Procured Move (PPM). A partial PPM is recommended for conus moves to get paid for weight in your car. A full PPM offers significant profit potential by paying you the government's cost (examples mentioned: Jamie's $14,000 profit in 2023, and potential $10,000 profit in 2025). Challenge misinformation about PPM rules by referencing the JTR. Temporary Living Expenses (TLE) & Temporary Living Allowance (TLA): TLE (CONUS to CONUS, CONUS to OCONUS, or OCONUS to CONUS variants): Max $290/day, limited to 21 days, can be split between old and new PDS. Can be used for M&IE even when staying with family/friends. TLA (OCONUS): Up to 60 days upon arrival, 10 days upon departure. Covers lodging plus M&IE. Reference the JTR due to common misinformation. Prioritize minimizing stress over maximizing per diem. Preparing Your Family: Frame the move as an adventure. Acknowledge feelings (sadness, excitement) for everyone. Involve older kids in packing. Remember it's a team effort. Decluttering: Less stuff makes moving easier, especially with PPM. Reduces mental stress. Try methods like the hanger trick, Marie Kondo ("spark joy"), or the "poop test" for toys. Holding a garage sale can generate extra cash. Smart Travel & Leave: Explore circuitous travel or taking leave en route by getting it on your orders. PCS is a prime opportunity to take leave between assignments. Can take leave before departing or upon arrival. Understand BH timing. Inventory & Support: Video and photograph your belongings for inventory in case of loss or damage. You are not alone. Lean on your support network, friends, family, or sponsor for help. "There's so much high-quality data, and more and more is being made publicly available. By shifting to open source, we're choosing that the value proposition is the people." Dr. Lindsey Heagy discusses February's special section in The Leading Edge on the future of applied geophysics. In this forward-thinking episode, we explore open-source software and its possibilities to transform the geosciences. As the world potentially shifts away from a hydrocarbon-based economy, the need for innovation in areas like mineral exploration, groundwater management, and urban geophysics has never been more pressing. Lindsey shares her insights on the power of open-source software to democratize science, allowing a broader community to engage in problem-solving and innovation. She explains the nuances of open-source licensing and its implications for collaboration and commercialization. We also get an inside look at the creation and impact of SimPEG, an open-source framework for geophysical inversions, which has become a sandbox for researchers to plug in new ideas without reinventing the wheel. Aujourd'hui l'économie
Comment répondre aux angoisses de la classe moyenne française?

Aujourd'hui l'économie

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 25, 2024 3:03

This is a classic rerun of my episode with Tom Tate. The email inbox can be the bane of an attorney's existence, easily stealing half of your day if you let it. But email marketing is an affordable and highly effective form of marketing for solo and small firms, so the inbox also shouldn't be ignored. However, you can save a lot of time and hassle with a good strategy and a bit of automation.Joining us today to help us conquer our inbox is Tom Tate, a marketing specialist with AWeber, creators of a suite of popular email marketing products. I use AWeber for both my law practice and my podcast, and although it's already helped me save a lot of time, I'm still just scratching the service of what the product offers. Today my guest is Karl Seelbach. Karl is an attorney down near Austin, TX with a very interesting practice in which he defends or works with corporate clients that have the option of opting out of worker's comp (and self-insuring, so to speak) which creates a really interesting opportunity, and I think has a lot of pluses and some minuses to it. So I enjoyed exploring that with him. He's also the co-founder of a company called Skribe.ai. They seek to revolutionize the video deposition world with the introduction of AI tools to help create an efficient and effective way of doing depositions in this modern legal landscape. It's a fascinating discussion, and it addresses a lot of other concerns and issues I had when I was a litigator doing deposition. I hope you enjoy. In this episode, Neil and Karl discuss:Why Karl started his firm and Skribe.ai.Changing business from the beginning of your firm to having a more established firm. Introducing and implementing new tech at your firm and with your team. Using technology to improve your law firm. Key Takeaways:If you are starting out, you need to get your name out there and be willing to hit the pavement. Sometimes lowering your rate will get you the work that you want, which can help to reel in larger work later down the road. If you are trying to find the truth, you will be taking many depositions. Using technology to keep them all straight and organized can cut down on the amount of time you are using to review and take them. Using a program like Skribe.ai will allow you to get video deposition, with a transcript for less money and more quickly which can empower attorneys and better serve clients. Today, my guest is John Mahoney. John is the founder of The Law Offices of John Mahoney, and they focus exclusively on federal employment law, which is a subject area near and dear to my heart being from the Washington, DC area - although, as John quite clearly points out, federal employment laws pertain not only all over the country, but indeed internationally with federal employees being stationed all around the world. It's a fascinating discussion with him about his virtual practice in the federal employment law space and how he was influenced by his father's experience in the industrial area of Worcester, MA. It's an interesting conversation that he and I have, a little bit more in the substantive area of the law than we normally do on this program, but I hope you enjoy listening to John and learning a little bit about how he built a virtual practice in the federal employment law space. In this episode, Neil and John discuss:How John first got interested and involved in employment law. The history of the labor movement, and why labor laws are so important and were created in the first place. Running a virtual law practice with remote employees. Virtual growth practice, law, and sustainability. Key Takeaways:Federal law is not limited geographically - there are federal employees all around the globe. By building a virtual practice, you can attract attorneys from wherever the government is. Many people today take for granted the work that was done by early labor lawyers, unions, and others in the labor movement. Many of the benefits we experience today are because of these individuals. There are ways to build culture and comradery with your team in a virtual environment. Starting with the right people can help. Understanding what your capacity is for yourself and each of your attorneys can help you to have a better understanding of when you need to hire. "These whistleblower retaliation or complaint or grievance retaliation are considered prohibited personnel practices, federal employees cannot be terminated for any of those reasons. Jason Rice is a solo practitioner up in the beautiful state of Maine, having left the Sunshine State of Florida to pursue his illegal practice near his wife's hometown was a matter of fact, and he has a family law practice there called Dirigo Divorce. One of the planning tools he used in preparation to go solo was listening to this podcast and recommendations, and so that's very gratifying for me to hear. So I'm thrilled to have him on and to talk about his journey. And as you will see, it's one that I think many of us can relate to, and find inspiration in.In this episode, Neil and Jason discuss:Skills that can help you be a great family law attorney. Collaborative law and mediation. Making the decision and preparing to go solo. How the current housing economics have affected marital homes in divorces. Key Takeaways:No two cases are alike in family law - each family and individual is unique and has their own story that needs to be reflected in the solution. Private mentorship in solo and small firms can help newer attorneys to understand the practice and, eventually, grow their own firms. This would help both the mentor and the mentee. Technology has helped to level the playing field for new attorneys looking to go solo. Working with virtual assistants, remote answering services, and other such staffing options can help you to grow your law firm with less in-person staff than you would have needed previously. While we don't often talk about specific areas of law on the show, but today it is a fascinating conversation touching on the starting of Peter's firm that focused on creating a different kind of firm, mining law, real estate, and so many other things. It's a great conversation that everyone can take something from. I hope you enjoy! In this episode, Neil and Peter discuss:Staking a mining claim, and how mining ties in with business and real estate. Running your law firm as a business and treating your employees with respect. Creating mentor/mentee relationships in your firm. Evolving your law firm as technology and situations change. Key Takeaways:There is a larger process to actually mining on claimed land that involves multiple groups of people, including the indigenous tribes of the area. Most mining projects today go through vigorous processes to ensure minimal impact on the environment in a way that was not done in the previous centuries. Paying forward in life is what it is all about. Engage your younger attorneys (and even interns) into the work from the beginning and let them follow through on things. It will benefit the business but also benefit the attorney. "If you ask the lawyers that work here, I think they get a real, meaningful experience and they feel very supported. It's a great discussion for law entrepreneurs of any size. Take a listen! In this episode, Neil and Katherine discuss:The science and discipline of project management. Workflow process and customer journeys for law firm consistency.Gaining a visual reference for who is doing the work, for both simple and complex items. Technology for project management. Key Takeaways:Budgets are a key aspect of project management that is becoming more and more important to law firms and to their clients. There is value in creating a workflow chart for all aspects of your law firm, regardless of size. Start with the workflow and other analysis necessary before you create the procedure and process. Doing this will give you a more complete picture of what those procedures need to be from the creation of them. Taking the time to map out the workflow and understand your procedures can be a game-changer for any lawyer. It will also help with better understanding your law firm as a business. Today, my guest is Christine McDannell. Christine is a mergers and acquisition specialist and advisor. I wanted to have her on the program today to talk about a subject area that we solo and small firm practitioners don't spend an awful lot of time thinking about - exiting the profession. And I'll freely admit, I'm getting to that point in my life where I'm starting to give that some thought. Having Christine on today, we explore some of the issues about possibly selling a practice or transitioning out of a practice, what we should be doing, how we should be structuring that process, and what I thought would be something that a lot of other folks would like to listen to as well.In this episode, Neil and Christine discuss:Exiting and selling your law firm, no matter how your firm is set up (even if you are a true solo). Different transfer-out strategies and approaches. Positioning your firm as a target for selling. Pros and cons of acquisition for both seller and buyer. Key Takeaways:Many lawyers just fade out when they are ready to retire, but that is not typically the best option for your employees or your clients. If at all possible, you do not want any negative reviews online, especially if you are looking to sell your firm. Even without a brick-and-mortar building, you will still have assets that can be sold - client lists, ongoing revenue, retainers, etc. There are creative options for selling firms, including combining with other law firms for a larger, more tempting package for another lawyer or firm to acquire. In this episode, Neil and Janet discuss:How public relations has changed in a post-COVID world. Understanding who might be a good networking contact for you. Building a better business card (or business card substitute). Maximizing your time at the conference (hint - it requires pre-prep and follow-up). Key Takeaways:You need to be available and present in the spaces people are in - comment on LinkedIn, connect through the virtual world, and be willing to meeting digitally. While the speakers are great, connect with others who are attending the conference - get to know them and use it as a networking opportunity. There is value in the transition periods and socials.Finding commonalities with other people is a great way to introduce yourself and make an initial connection with someone you're wanting to meet or reconnect with. Turn off devices and strike up conversations with those around you. There are opportunities all around you at conferences if you are open and aware of them. Key Takeaways:Nobody wants to listen to a presentation that is a long PowerPoint full of words that the presenter just reads. Your ability to communicate is central to your ability to excel as an attorney - whether with clients, in the courtroom, or with other attorneys. When practicing, try to find an audience who doesn't know your industry - if they can understand it, you've nailed it. There is an art to communication and storytelling. You can't just jump in the middle, your audience needs to know the purpose of your presentation. "There's always somebody in the audience who's listening to you for the first time or getting this information for first time. They need to know what on earth is happening - it's classic storytelling, right? You don't just jump into the middle, people have to know what the plot is about." — Fern ChanEpisode References: Videosocials - https://videosocials.net/ Join Fern for Solve the Crime of Death by PowerPoint on Fri, 13 Oct 2023 at 12 PM EST, and craft an unforgettable presentation! https://fernchan.com/ Get in touch with Fern Chan:Website: https://fernchan.com/ Book: How to NOT Suck at Presentations - https://www.amazon.com/How-NOT-Suck-Presentations-Presentation-ebook/dp/B09G1XNDYN/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fernchanauthor LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fernchan/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. With spooky season upon us, we are cracking out the old scary movies. One of which is The Exorcist, but we can't leave well enough alone and needed to know the real story. Was Anneliese Michel truly possessed like she claimed despite her not fitting the criteria or was this a case of a mental health issue before it's time. One thing is for sure, Hollywood for sure added their own touches to make her seem possessed. Today, my guest is Amber Saunders. Amber is an attorney with her own firm, The Saunders Firm in Atlanta, Georgia. She started out, like many of us, thinking she was going to do one type of law, then ended up doing something completely different - now focusing primarily on estate planning and business law in the Atlanta area. We talk about that journey, and the intersection between those two practice areas. Amber is very candid about the mistakes that she made and the hurdles she had to overcome, and how almost all of them were centered around her, and I think that's a lesson that we can all learn a great deal from.In this episode, Neil and Amber discuss:Different workplace models for law firms. The relationship between estate planning and succession planning. Learning to be a good employer.Setting expectations, building SOPs, and properly communicating with your team. Key Takeaways:Having a will and your documents in place well before you pass will make things so much easier for your family and organization after you pass. Procrastination is one of the biggest challenges facing estate planning attorneys - everybody thinks they're going to have more time. Learning to lead a business is a practice - you have to learn to be a good employer in order to attract and retain good employees. Being a solo firm lawyer, you are still a business. You need to pay attention to the reports and other financials. It is a business that needs to be monitored. "I screwed up a lot. I went to therapy and realized, we can't be everyone else. And until I grow, my business won't grow. I'm going to have to do something different." — Amber SaundersEpisode References: Molly McGrath - https://hiringandempowering.com/ The Law Entrepreneur - Ep 325. I'm really excited to have Joshua Lastine on the show today. Joshua is an entertainment law attorney, and as many of you know, I'm connected to the entertainment industry through my daughter who is a professional actress at the musical theatre world on the west coast. So I've seen a lot of what goes on in the entertainment world from the performers side and from the creative side, but very little about what is behind the curtain on the legal side. Joshua has worked with all the big entities in that arena. He started his practice right after the pandemic and he has built that up and three years since was built into a thriving entertainment law practice. So it's a great opportunity for me to talk about two things that I like a lot, solo and small firm practitioners and the entertainment industry. And there's no better representative of that intersection than Joshua Lastine. I hope you enjoy. In this episode, Neil and Joshua discuss:Overcoming adversity in entertainment and/or law. Tenacity and anti-fragility. Starting a solo practice during lockdown. Maintaining relationships to stay top of mind. Key Takeaways:Life is about leveling up and the journey it takes to get there, not the final location. It takes different types of lawyers for different types of work that need to be done. If someone declines working with you, it would just be a different personality match. Network early in your law school experience, especially if you know what area of law you are looking to go into. Find a way to organize your contacts into different levels of importance to you and your business and make sure to stay in contact with and top of mind for those people. In our conversation, we get into a lot of discussion about what is it that we ought to be looking for as attorneys and as business owners, when we look to hire a design firm to help bring our branding, our marketing, our social media, and all of our design elements together into one cohesive plan. Christine shares a lot of light on the subject and some insights as to how we can go about doing this in a systemic and organized manner. I think you'll get a lot out of it. In this episode, Neil and Christine discuss:A broad-scope approach to branding and image creation. Creative reach outs, both direct and indirect. Integrating design for consistency and cohesion. The changing landscape of marketing and social media. Key Takeaways:Dig deep to understand your story and what problems you're trying to solve. That is a great way to understand what you want your branding to be. Digital is your number one marketing priority, but print is not outdated or unimportant. Social media is king for content. For law firms, you need to be on LinkedIn, have a great profile, post content, and interact with influencers in that space. Short-form video is the key. People want to see you, get to know you and your firm, and connect that way. "I advise you to explore LinkedIn a little bit further. It is the place where people are going. There's content that's incredibly informative, helps you grow your company, webinars are available, and you get immediate notification of people switching jobs so you can be in touch with them. We don't have too many criminal defense attorneys on the on the program so it's really nice to touch base with somebody as well known as Joe and get his observations on some of the nuances of developing a criminal defense for primarily criminal defense, and why some of the things that are necessary in that type of environment are different from say if you were to do a family law, or estate planning or something of that nature. It's a great conversation, and I hope you enjoy listeningIn this episode, Neil and Joe discuss:How trial law is similar to acting. Joe's journey from the prosecutor's office to being a public defender, to opening a private practice. Why criminal lawyers get recruited more often than those doing civil work. Creating a work-life balance as a criminal litigation attorney. Key Takeaways:Being in front of a jury is like being on stage - you have to convey your message not only with your words but also with your body language, you need to know your audience, and you need to know your material. You need to have a good office manager. If they are good with the business administration and are willing to learn, they can be invaluable to growing and managing your firm. If you want to work from home, do not get into criminal litigation. There are factors that will prevent it due to the nature of the field. If you don't know what tech is going to be available in the court room, call the clerk ahead of time. The jury wants something of a tech nature because they expect it and learn well with it. "Really to learn how to manage people because everybody's different. Everybody has their own, pluses and minuses, not everyone can get along, not everyone is friendly. Why ChatGPT stands out from prior tech evolutions. The pros and cons of ChatGPT (and how to stay out of trouble when using it). How AI might change intro legal positions. Key Takeaways:ChatGPT is not just the next shiny thing - this is the real thing and it is going to be making change. Start to learn it now. Like in all areas, ChatGPT is data in/data out. It will change how we do business, but it does need oversight. As the data is curated and AI is applied against it, that is when the magic happens. The younger generation has a different interface with technology. They are interacting with it in a different way than lawyers currently are in the legal industry and it is changing how lawyers connect with their clients. "ChatGPT is a co-pilot. Today we welcome back an old friend of the show, Joey Coleman! A couple of weeks ago you listened to the classic rewind episode where we talked about Joey's first book and, today, we welcome him back to talk about his newest book, Never Lose an Employee Again, which drops on June 27, 2023! I've said on many occasions that Joey's first book was the single greatest business development book I've ever read - it was the only one that caused me to take massive action. I have no doubt that the same experience is going to happen with his newest book. So listen in and learn how you can create remarkable experiences for your customers, your employees, and yourself. I hope you enjoy! In this episode, Neil and Joey discuss:Creating remarkable experiences. Taking actionable tips to never lose an employee or a customer again. The challenge faced in keeping employees globally and how COVID affected that challenge. Creating a better environment than what you originally experienced. The evolving landscape of remote work, workplace competition, and empathetic leadership. Key Takeaways:Employee experience has a lot of underlying principles and traits that can be applied across all cultures because, at the root, everyone is human. Regardless of the size of your firm, the underlying principles and systems you use should work whether you're hiring your first employee or your thousandth employee. Post-COVID, the world of employer/employee-relationship has changed dramatically and it will never return to the way it was before. Human interactions within the enclave of the work environment are the culture. It is more than the accouterments around the office and the relationships within the workplace. "Your customer experience is only ever going to be as great as your employee experience. As you improve the customer experience, the employee experience goes up. Today my guest is Jodie Zerega. Jodie is the owner of a legal recruiting firm operating out of Sarasota, Florida. As the name implies, they provide all types of recruiting services in the legal space for attorneys, or law firms looking to hire attorneys, and frankly, for attorneys looking to be hired by law firms. In addition, they recently started a division, catering to the needs of recruiting law firm staff, such as paralegals and administrative staff. As I go around the country listening to people talk about their concerns about the business of law, the recurring theme that I hear over and over again is the difficulty in firing in hiring good help, good attorneys, and good staff. So using a legal recruiting firm, like Zerega Consulting, might solve that issue and that's one of the reasons I wanted to have Jodie on the podcast. So without any further delay, let's learn a little bit about legal recruiting with Jodie Zerega. In this episode, Neil and Jodie discuss:The evolution of what law firms are looking for when hiring an employee. Hot topics in legal recruiting in 2023. Compensation when working with a legal recruiter. Hiring and retaining legal staff. Key Takeaways:Understanding why there is a need is vital for your recruiter to understand so they can look to hire the right person for your firm. You want your recruiter to curate the resume list that you receive. If you want piles of resumes, you can get that yourself without a recruiter. The Attorney Jobs App by Zerega Consulting will allow you to save time, if you are searching for a new opportunity, by providing you only with jobs for attorneys and keeping your information private. If you have a legal staffing problem, you need to look at whether or not the nature of the job you're trying to recruit for is attractive. I wanted to have John back on the podcast today to talk about some of the issues revolving around how the marketplace has changed as a result of COVID, what has happened to law firms since then, and how that influences their approach to marketing. We then revisit some ideas about marketing, funnels, and all that good stuff. Hope you enjoy! In this episode, Neil and John discuss:Marketing funnels and content loops. Where law firms fall short in their marketing process. Providing valuable education in your monthly newsletter. Actionable tips for better marketing, newsletters, and social media. Key Takeaways:Losing contact with the people already in your network and funnel is throwing business down the drain. Maintaining relationships and contact can help with referrals and repeat business. Turn your marketing funnels into loops - don't have a start and an ending, keep contacts circling through your content loop. Create an updraft and reenergize your contacts. While automation is great, having a personal touch can shake up the connection and give strength to that contact. People are consuming short-form content. This is where more value can be generated for your law firm and your potential clients. Today, my guest is Shelby Bothun. We don't really spend that much time talking about the substitute aspects of law, but Shelby is a lawyer in North Dakota who focuses on estate planning in the agricultural community. And owes it to her roots as an agricultural insurance agent and the fact that her family has been in the agricultural business for a couple of generations now. What I find fascinating is to learn how much I didn't know, frankly, about the agricultural business on a large scale in the Midwest. Many people have this romanticized version of what a farmer or what it means to be a farmer, but really, I should think, more along the lines of a big corporate business owner, because that's what farmers are. This is a fascinating conversation, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. In this episode, Neil and Shelby discuss:Why an agricultural economics degree is so marketable in the Midwest. The importance of service in an industry with identical products. Facilitating the transfer of wisdom, not just assets. Working around the crop seasons to best serve clients. Key Takeaways:There are generational benefits to having a proper succession plan for your agricultural estate. The farm transition is going to be emotional for both parties. Working with an estate planner can help to ease the transition and make it more successful. Get an undergraduate degree in what you are passionate about and want to focus on in law school. In a farming community, land is the most valuable resource. "Most farmers want to leave a legacy. Today, we welcome back Mark Rockwell to The Law Entrepreneur. What Mark does is help solo and small, firm practitioners. Now he's an attorney by trade, but most of his adult life in business and I think that gives him a little different insight into challenges faced by solo and small firms. Because of that, he brings a different approach to coaching those law practitioners. We have a great conversation today about time tracking, charging what you're worth, and creating an open and honest environment with both your clients and those working in your law firm. Listen in for some great takeaways to help you run a more successful firm today. In this episode, Neil and Mark discuss:Challenges solo and small firm law firms face. Setting out expectations and scope of work with your client. Keeping on top of your accounts receivable and your time. Tracking time, managing distractions, and avoiding incorrect time reporting. Key Takeaways:Nobody wants to gouge their clients, but if the client understands the value that is created and the work that is involved, they will be more willing to pay you for what you are worth. If you let your AR go too far, you will go from a big, well-paying client to a pro bono client very quickly. Interruptions are destructive to billable time and will be fatal financially. If you do not bill the number of hours in a day that you expected and planned for, you need to understand where that time is going and what activities are pulling you away from that time. Without knowing what those habits and problems are, there will be no change. "At the end of the day, when lawyers aren't billing enough, it's a lack of confidence. I believe that in billing and capturing all your time, you have to be confident that you are creating value, the total number of hours that you're going to have billed against this project is going to be met with the acceptance of the client, and they're going to be willing to pay the bill. That is why it goes back to that upfront conversation of managing expectations and understanding the value that is being created." — Mark RockwellGet in touch with Mark Rockwell:Website: https://coachrockwell.com/ Email: Mark@coachrockwell.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/coachrockwell Listen to Episode 277 with Mark Rockwell here: https://thelawentrepreneur.com/episodes/277-law-is-not-just-a-profession-its-a-business-with-mark-rockwell/ Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. We had her business partner, David Neagle, on last year and I wanted to have Steph on because she has more of the hands-on, tactical role in their company, whereas David is the more visionary individual, and so I wanted to kind of complete the picture with her. She gives some great tips and you will get some great takeaways. In this episode, Neil and Steph discuss:Understanding why you don't do the things you know you need to do. Utilizing an integrator in your business to focus on your areas of genius. Putting dissatisfaction into action. Working with your team not controlling and micromanaging. Key Takeaways:There are two parts to change: awareness and applying new behaviors. If you don't hire the right people, it will be harder for your business to succeed. Your team is only as good as your worst player. Set your team up for success from the beginning. Until you have the right things in your business, you don't know if you are stifling your A-Players. Be willing to pay for one person who can do the jobs you need done well, rather than spending less on multiple people who will do it less well. "You've got to start employing new behaviors because that's the only way that change actually occurs. If you just have the awareness, nothing changes, nothing happens. You have to show up differently, which means you have to act differently." — Steph TussEpisode References: The Law Entrepreneur - Understanding the Art of Leverage with David Neagle: https://thelawentrepreneur.com/episodes/333-understanding-the-art-of-leverage-with-david-neagle/ No Rules Rules by Reed Hastings: https://www.amazon.com/No-Rules-Netflix-Culture-Reinvention/dp/B0845Z14DX/ Get in touch with Steph Tuss:Website: https://www.lifeisnowinc.com/ Successful Mind Podcast: https://www.successfulmindpodcast.com/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/stephtuss Thank you to our sponsors!Ruby Receptionist - Virtual receptionist & live call services that will help you grow your office (and save money), one call at a time - to learn more, go to https://get.ruby.com/TLE or call 844.311.7829The Net Profit CFO - Ryan Kimler works with attorneys who want to enjoy higher net profits without working longer or harder. To Corey, diversity is more than just a buzzword, it is something that he lives fully and completely every day. I hope you enjoy it. In this episode, Neil and Corey discuss:Looking at negotiations as the start of a relationship. AI in the legal industry. Creating authority with content and authority marketing. Living authentically and the business case for diversity. Key Takeaways:There are always deals that are happening, they are just going to be different during a recession or other hard times. It takes a conscious effort and plan to expose yourself to different groups, get comfortable in circles not of your own, and to put yourself out there. You will make mistakes. Continue to learn, continue to grow, and learn to apologize when you are in the wrong. If you are writing a book, make sure you aren't writing an article with 150 extra pages. Write your book with the intention of sharing the information you don't want to take with you to the grave that can help better serve your audience. "It takes more than an openness, it takes a conscious effort and plan to get yourself out there and expose yourself more to different groups, learn cultures, get comfortable, and build trust. Capturing more client calls and standing out with your client experience. Utilizing the calls you're receiving to track your marketing strategies. The importance of having live chat on your website to better serve your clients. Key Takeaways:The number one thing you should do if you are looking to automate and grow your law practice is to hire a virtual receptionist.
