Tread Perilously's 2024 Star Trek Month continues with an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called "Justice." After a tiring mission to establish a new colony, the Enterprise finds an idyllic world full of pretty blonde people who really enjoy sex. But that permissiveness comes with a zero tolerance policy for the slightest infraction of local laws and death as the only punishment. Does it have something to do with the half-visible space station also in orbit around the planet? Will Captain Picard have to justify the Prime Directive -- or break it -- in front of a cadre of TOS style god-aliens? And will Riker get some "quality time" on the planet? Erik and Justin disagree on the Wesley question in this episode. Brenda Bakke from The Young Riders returns in far less clothing. Erik has a problem with Data emoting in certain scenes. Bob Guccione makes a surprising appearance. Justin finds three worthy Star Trek ideas in the plot, even if they get lost in Gene Roddenberry's horniness and other first season TNG problems. The pair praise Gates McFadden despite being extremely ill-served by the script. Geography Corner centers on the water treatment plant gardens used in this and several other TNG episodes. The discussion leads to Jason Todd discourse and Gerd Shockley's birthday is "celebrated."
We take on the notorious Caligula, the story of the third Roman emperor who murdered his way to the throne and married his sister, in two forms--the original Bob Guccione cut with its hardore sex scenes, and the restored Gore Vidal/Tinto Brass version with its more measured editing, and find in the restoration a surprisingly decent film--the original theatrical version, however, lives up to its reputation. Starring Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mrren, Teresa Ann Savoy, Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud, John Steiner, and Guido Manarri. Written by Gore Vidal. Directed by Tinto Brass.
One of cinema's most infamous disasters, Caligula was conceived by producer Bob Guccione, the founder of Penthouse magazine, as an explicit, expensively-made adult film, about the rise and fall of the titular Roman emperor. In pursuing this, Guccione removed director Tinto Brass during post-production, so that he could have hardcore pornography shot and inserted into the film. On its release in 1979, Caligula was critically savaged on both moral and cinematic grounds, confiscated by police in some countries, banned in others, and the cause of lines that stretched around the block. It has remained an artifact of cult interest ever since, and the subject of occasional attempts to reconstruct it in a form that reflects something approaching its creators' original visions - to whatever extent their visions agreed with each other. Caligula: The Ultimate Cut is the most thorough of these reconstructions by far, benefitting from the rediscovery of 96 hours of original material, which had been rushed out of Italy and hidden during the film's release. Opening intertitles claim that every frame of art historian Thomas Negovan's cut is previously unseen. It's long been wondered whether there's a great film within Caligula; although we don't think The Ultimate Cut demonstrates that there is, it's entertaining and striking, and offers an idea of what might have been. Recorded on 18th August 2024.
The summer with Carmen et Caligula : the ultimate cut, en salles le 19 juin.
Christian welcomes Little Lemmi to the show for the first time, to discuss the PERFECT "first time" movie: the highly controversial 1979 film "Caligula" starring Malcolm MacDowell, Peter O'Toole and Helen Mirren, written by Gore Vidal and produced by Penthouse magazine founder Bob Guccione.
On this edition of Parallax Views, Simon Matthews, author of Free Your Mind!: Giovanni 'Tinto' Brass, 'Swinging London' and the 60s Pop Culture Scene, joins the show to discuss the life and career of European filmmaker Tinto Brass. Brass is perhaps most well-known today for his erotic/softcore features as well as the epic, star-studded effort Caligula (starring Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren among others), that was re-edited at the behest of Penthouse's Bob Guccione to the point of butchering Brass' original vision. Matthews, however, hones in on the works of Brass as they relate to the the era of mod culture in the days of London's swinging 60s. With a foreward by the legendary actor Franco Nero, Free Your Mind! explores such Brass efforts as Nerosubianco (aka Attraction), The Howl, The Vacation, and The Dropout and their relation to 60s pop culture and counterculture. We'll also be discussing such Tinto Brass movies as the controversial Salon Kitty about Nazi Germany (part of the Nazi chic boom of the 60s/70s film industry), the spaghetti Western Yankee, and Brass in relation to contemporaries like Russ Meyer and John Waters. We'll look at the politics of Tinto Brass and why his filmography, especially in Britain, has been overlooked. If you're unfamiliar with Tinto Brass this will fill you in on an interesting auteur in the world of filmmaking who hasn't gotten his proper due despite working with heavyweight actors like Vanessa Redgrave and the aforementioned Franco Nero. We'll also discuss the unmade films of Tinto Brass including the adaptation of Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange that he almost made and a project that never materialized with Jim Morrison of the legendary rock 'n' roll band The Doors. All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views.

Five women had no idea they were about to form a pornography sorority — a sisterhood that would change their careers, their lives and eventually, the way much of the public viewed people who work in porn. There was the "superstar" turned mom, Jane Hamilton aka Veronica Hart. The Jewish, artsy, exhibitionist, Annie Sprinkle, who claimed to have had sex with more than 3500 men. The former Girl Scout, Candida Royalle, an aspiring actress who was exiled from ballet at age 15 because she was too curvaceous. Veronica Vera, the girl with the strict Catholic upbringing who had a great sexual curiosity. And Gloria Leonard, the "nice Jewish girl" who had been a Wallstreet stockbroker and ended up taking on Larry Flynt and Bob Guccione as the publisher of her own High Society magazine. Join us as we speak to Vera, Jane and Gloria's daughter, Robin, about this "club" and why it was formed as we take a stroll back to 70's porn! Learn more about your ad choices. Through the story of VIVA, an erotic magazine for women created by Bob Guccione (founder of the men's magazine Penthouse), we are getting a history lesson today on FEMINISM! First wave, second wave, third wave, fourth wave? What does it all mean and where are we now? A little background: While VIVA was created by one of the most prominent figures in adult entertainment, it was staffed by female writers and editors and featured groundbreaking full-frontal male nudes, writing by feminist icons like Betty Friedan and profiles of literary legends like Maya Angelou. Its cover stars include Bianca Jagger and Shelley Duvall. Anna Wintour was even VIVA's fashion editor at one point. But what is originally conceived as a high-end, progressive, sexual utopia for women… doesn't quite turn out that way. Jennifer Romolini is an award-winning writer, editor, and author of "Weird in a World That's Not: A Career Guide for Misfits" and the upcoming memoir, “Ambition Monster” (Atria Books, 2024). A longtime media executive, Romolini is the host of Crooked Media's latest series “STIFFED”, which tells the true story of VIVA, one the first erotic magazines for women, and co-host of the “Everything is Fine” podcast with former Lucky Magazine editor-in-chief, Kim France. She started her career as a magazine fact checker working at Talk, Lucky, Glamour, Cosmo, and Allure. Enjoy this episode of BEEF, a scripted non-fiction storytelling podcast where business wars meets pop culture. Hosted by award-winning pod host Bridget Todd, this show tells the stories of legends in their fields, and how they tried to stomp out their competition only to find that their enemies become the driving force behind their success. In this episode: “Playboy vs Penthouse”, sexual imagery and erotic content are nothing new. Whether for artistic enjoyment or pure carnal pleasure, humans have been obsessed with watching each other "do it" since the dawn of time. But the forms this has taken in the public sphere have transformed greatly. Nowadays, with the advent of the internet, Western society seems to take the almost ubiquitous nature of pornography for granted. But in the mid-twentieth century, magazines like Playboy and Penthouse weren't just publishing nude pictorials. They were the vanguards of the sexual revolution and the free speech debate. And their creators Hugh Hefner and Bob Guccione were engaged in a game of brinkmanship to determine just how much was acceptable to print. As Viva continues to stumble along and figure itself out, so does seemingly everyone else in the 1970s. In the midst of the sexual revolution and the rise of “Porno Chic,” there's a chorus of anti-porn feminists attacking Bob Guccione's publishing empire, and Viva's caught in the middle.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We hear more about the wild world of 5-star Amazon reviews, beg for you to sign Joe's petition to get Caligula into Kingdom Hearts instead of the one to get a 4K release of this film, allow Jack to continue his awareness campaign for Plague Dogs, explore why it's important to make sure everyone on your set is aware of and consenting to what is happening and to know when/when not to invite family to set, touch on the work of Gore Vidal (giving Joe a chance to reference The Venture Bros), look into more of Tinto Brass's history and works, get into the nitty gritty on Bob "The Gooch" Guccione and Penthouse Magazine, manifest one of Jack's Grant Morrison references to bring up The Filth, discuss the importance of extras that really stick out, pitch Santa Sangre but with sex carnies, cover some of Caligula's actual history and acknowledge the issues with that scholarship, reinforce the importance of having breakfast, briefly cover the trouble Nero got into on tour, emphasize the importance of letting artists be artists, and continue our bewilderment at the utter lack of professionalism on spy job sites in 19 CE. One of the new features we wanted for season 2 is for us to pick something we want to cover regardless of it being a Razzie movie. Jack picked 1979's Caligula, which should be completely unsurprising if you've been listening to our show. To help us with this herculean task, we enlisted (perhaps conscripted) our friend Antonio Palacios (The Cultworthy Cinema Podcast, The Cultworthy Classic Podcast, and The Milf & Me Podcast), which probably counts as torture because we're somehow the second show to ask him to cover this. We take a surprise detour into the WILD world of Amazon movie reviews, learn the story of how Antonio first discovered this film (or, "How To Ruin Porn For Teenage Boys"), consider whether Tiberian punishments would be a good thing for some of today's politicians, ponder just how many penises it takes to destroy a film's messaging, get lost in the weeds over which pornographic scenes were added in post, hypothesize over inconsistencies in the production resulting from differences between director Tinto Brass's work and producer Bob Guccione's, take a moment to appreciate this film's poor editor, learn the secret origins of John Madden's teleprompter technique, cover the pitfalls of casting and dubbing over inexperienced non-English speaking actors for an English-language film, empathize with Helen Mirren's clear desire to be literally anywhere else on Earth, discuss the unsimulated sex in this film, address the ways historical inaccuracies can make for poor cinematic choices, and marvel at the weird ways this movie is reminiscent of certain Square-Enix RPGs. This one's not for the faint of heart. Get comfortable and prepare to never find anything sexy again. My guest today kept posting one amazing photo after another on the various EXGO Facebook sites, that I asked him if he would agree to come on and share his story. His first season was in 1979 in Club Med Martinique as a Snorkeling/Picnic G.O. From NYC but now living in beautiful Arizona, please help me welcome Gary Sirota!! Gary worked for Club Med from 1979 to 1989 with a few various stints here and there after that. He worked in such villages as La Caravelle, Paradise Island, Copper Mountain, Magic Isle, Cancun, Sandpiper, Eilat, St.Moritz, Vittel and Moorea. Serge Trigano interviewed a seventeen and half years old Gary in New York City when he applied (no pressure, right?!), and he was sent to Martinique not soon after. Gary has very vivid memories of his time in Club Med, so if you were an early 80s G.O. or want to know what Club Med was like back them, then this interview is for you!! In Magic Isle alone, Gary met David Lee Roth, Pat Benatar and Bob Guccione along with some Penthouse playmates. Gary eventually became a Bar G.O and then Chef de Bar and has one amazing story after the next!! He mentions a lot of names from the past and the three things he misses the most about Club Med. Please enjoy! **My First Season podcast has always been free to listen to and is available on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora and Listen Notes. In the world of men's magazines, Hugh Hefner was king of the hill for years, as publisher of Playboy magazine. But in 1965, a then-35-year-old laundromat manager, painter, and photographer named Bob Guccione launched a magazine to challenge the Playboy empire. He called it Penthouse. And by the early 1980s Penthouse had made Guccione one of America's richest businessmen. But Penthouse, Playboy, and Larry Flynt's Hustler had also by then become the targets of conservative and religious groups, eager to see the magazines banished. I met Bob Guccione in 1986, at the height of his battles with people like Attorney General Ed Meese, and Rev. Donald Wildmon and Rev, Jerry Falwell's “Moral Majority.”
The Pubic Wars commence! Hefner faces off against a new rival: Bob Guccione and his scandalous upstart magazine, Penthouse. Superstar Playmate Marilyn Cole describes becoming Playboy's first full-frontal centerfold. Hefner's right-hand woman, photo editor Marilyn Grabowski, takes us behind the lens. How did Playboy define beauty? And who was excluded from that standard? A Somethin' Else production. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

February 1, 1980. Penthouse's pornographic Roman epic Caligula gets released in the United States through indie playhouses and art house spaces. The year prior, Bob Guccione's magnum opus was released in his home country of Italy and was met with shocked viewers and authoritarian action from Italian officials. Caligula toed the line between pure pornography and mildly interesting exploitation, earning it the ire and scorn of law makers worldwide. As soon as Caligula's reels reached US shores, law suits and state bans were thrown at Guccione's feet. Widely considered one of the most extreme, disturbing films released, Caligula had to be cut down multiple times to avoid the ire of the law. However, the most expensive independent film of all time (at the time) never got passed the negative press and censorship attempts from law enforcement, failing to make back it's budget and going down as one of the biggest box office busts of all time. On this weeks episode of BOMBED!, the Foul House Mates have reunited and it feels...kind of gross. Stand up comic and FHM co-host Daniel Caprio joins Liam Wolfe in discussing his favorite movie, the shocking Roman epic Caligula. Countless lawsuits, a frustrated Gore Vidal, an even more screwed up Peter O'Toole and the creative back stabbing of Bob Guccione are all covered here this week. If only this film had just one cut! It's Caligula here... on BOMBED!
Celebrated actor Malcolm McDowell joins Tom on the Podcast Express. The two friends discuss Malcolm's brilliant career with an emphasis on wonderful accounts with legends Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir John Gielgud and Stanley Kubrick. Penthouse magazine founder Bob Guccione and the film "Caligula" hysterically find their way into the conversation and much more.

Barry Avrich (barryavrich.com) has produced and directed over 30 documentary films and television productions that have been broadcast in over 100 countries, and won awards and critical acclaim. Barry has made a name for himself focusing on powerful moguls and captivating personalities including Universal Studios titan Lew Wasserman, Miramax founder Harvey Weinstein and Rolling Stones promoter Michael Cohl. Barry has also produced several television specials for PBS, HBO, Showtime and Bravo including the concert special BOWFIRE, The Tempest starring Oscar-winner Christopher Plummer and a charity awards gala ( One X One) starring Richard Gere, Matt Damon and Shakira. His reputation as provocative filmmaker was defined when he set his sights on the Holy Grail. Producing a biography on Lew Wasserman, the founder and reclusive powerful chairman of MCA Universal for six decades, was considered career suicide. Wasserman had told everyone that he would never participate in any kind of biography and threatened anyone who dare try while he was alive (or dead). Barry waited until he died and commenced production. In spite of family legal threats and anonymous threats of physical harm, Barry’s film, The Last Mogul, was a massive success garnering rave reviews in Variety and The New York Times. He would go on to produce other highly acclaimed films like Unforgettable, Satisfaction, Guilty Pleasure, A Criminal Mind, and many television specials. Barry’s passionate profile on billionaire concert promoter Michael Cohl put him face to face with Bono and Mick Jagger. Barry went on to produce acclaimed feature films on Winston Churchill, Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, and disgraced theatre mogul Garth Drabinsky. Barry has also produced two Stratford Festival film adaptations of Caesar and Cleopatra and The Tempest with Christopher Plummer. Barry has also produced and directed two biographical docs on legendary comedian David Steinberg and Penthouse founder Bob Guccione. His films on Guccione and Drabinsky both had their world premieres at The Toronto International Film Festival. Barry’s full filmography can be seen at imdb.com

Today's Guest: Mike Edison, author, Dirty! Dirty! Dirty!: Of Playboys, Pigs, and Penthouse Paupers-An American Tale of Sex and Wonder Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of Lenny Bruce, Bob Guccione Sr. and Al Goldstein fans – you see where this is going, yet?… in the NEW new media capital of the world, St. Petersburg, Florida! Hugh Hefner and Playboy. Bob Guccione and Penthouse. Al Goldstein and Screw. Larry Flynt and Hustler. Order Dirty! Dirty! Dirty!: Of Playboys, Pigs, and Penthouse Paupers-An American Tale of Sex and Wonder by clicking the book cover above! Those are just a few of the topics I’ll be discussing today with my guest, Mike Edison, author of a glorious romp through the modern history of sex magazine publishing, Dirty! Dirty! Dirty! Of Playboys, Pigs, and Penthouse Paupers. MIKE EDISON podcast excerpt: "People who try to claim the moral high ground, why is it they're the first ones wearing silver cufflinks and being hauled off to the hoosegow? Why is it that the guys that scream loudest about morality... Look at Newt Gingrich! Hypocrisy is the default position of the Republican Party." Order 'I Have Fun Everywhere I Go: Savage Tales of Pot, Porn, Punk Rock, Pro Wrestling, Talking Apes, Evil Bosses, Dirty Blues, American Heroes, and the Most Notorious Magazines in the World' by clicking on the book cover above! I’m telling you this up front so that those of you with sensitive moral constitutions – or if you’re simply under the age of 18 – will have plenty of time to watch and/or listen to something else. You might even hear a word or two about Lenny Bruce or George Carlin, Linda Lovelace or Harry Reems. For those who remain, I think you’ll find this conversation at times provocation, maybe a little shocking and rarely dull. This is Mike Edison’s second visit to Mr. Media – the first was to discuss I Have Fun Everywhere I Go: Savage Tales of Pot, Porn, Punk Rock, Pro Wrestling, Talking Apes, Evil Bosses, Dirty Blues, America -- and he talks the way he writes: rat-a-tat-tat, take-no-prisoners, waste no words, leave the reader no choice but to keep turning the pages and the listener no choice but to stay tuned. Edison is a long-time magazine writer, formerly the grand inhaler at High Times magazine, editor at Screw and a prolific staff letter writer at Penthouse. (You know, the kind that begin: “Dear Penthouse, I never thought it would ever happen to me, but…”). Personally, I think much of his style comes from his other obsession: he’s a rock ‘n’ roll drummer and there’s always a rhythm to his presentation, whether he’s talking with his lips or his hands. Today's Guest: Jim McBride, adult website entrepreneur, MrSkin.com Order 'Mr. Skin's Skincyclopedia: The A-to-Z Guide to Finding Your Favorite Actresses Naked' by clicking the book cover above! Here’s a statement of fact I think we can all agree upon: Heterosexual men like to look at naked women. We also like to see fully and partially clothed women and imagine them naked. That, in truth, is often more satisfying, in a strange but true fashion. MR. SKIN podcast excerpt: "Over 2,000 new nude scenes have happened since January 2005. So I said, 'It's time for a second edition.' That's kind of the reason this book is 688 pages. It's like half the size of the health care bill." And let’s not forget that we also enjoy doodling pictures of naked women and sharing these doodles wih our equally compelled brethren. Hugh Hefner and Bob Guccione figured this out. Howard Stern did, too. And then there was Jim McBride, the cheerful young dude who makes a living cataloging and capturing the moments when our favorite film and TV actresses—and many more women we’ve never heard of—slip a nip or more out of their clothes for all to see. Call it Celebrity Twin Peaks, if you must. Mr. Skin, as McBride is best known, is an empire-builder himself, with his website, MrSkin.com, radio appearances on the Howard Stern Show on Sirius Satellite Radio, and now the second edition of his valuable library reference, Mr. Skin’s Skincylopedia—now in its second edition. Today's Guest:Legs McNeil, author, Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, I Slept with Joey Ramone (MAY 2008) When Spin magazine started, its staff included two fascinating characters. First was Bob Guccione, Jr., the magazine’s founder and namesake son of the publisher of Penthouse. And then there was Spin’s senior editor, Legs McNeil. Legs McNeil!?! What the hell kind of stupid name was that for a journalist? I mean, I grew up with kids named "Plinky," "Jiggs," and "Doine," but "Legs"? Well, let me tell you, that guy Legs McNeil could write. Some months, the only copy worth reading in Spin was under his byline. It wasn’t until years later that I learned that in the early 1970s, McNeil was a co-founder, with John Holmstrom and Ged Dunn, of Punk Magazine, which gave name to an entire musical generation. McNeil has since written two remarkable non-fiction books, Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, and The Other Hollywood: The Uncensored Oral History of the Porn Film Industry He’s also involved in a new documentary series unspooling across VH1, Spike, and the Sundance Channel in May called "SEX: The Revolution." Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione is the subject of Filthy Gorgeous, a documentary chronicling the rise of the media mogul and his magazine. Jane Homlish, his longtime personal assistant for over 30 years who is featured in the film, joins host Robin Milling to talk about a relationship so unique it will never exist for her again. Jane tells Robin she was convinced that Guccione was the right fit for her inquisitive nature as a young traveler who also had a passion for art. When she answered an ad for a receptionist job she quickly moved up the ranks, knowing Guccione would not only be her boss, but her mentor. They connected creatively in their shared love of art, and spiritually searching for a greater truth as Jane, a Catholic school girl, thought she would be a nun and Bob thought he would be a priest. Jane earned his respect, ultimately overseeing the magazine from cover to cover, curating his massive art collection and his home where 11 pony size Rhodesian Ridgebacks once ruled the roost. They became 'inseparable' working till the wee hours of the morning from his East 67th Street townhouse where Bob lived and worked and Jane had her own private suite to accommodate the hours. She says, “I spent more hours with Bob Guccione than anybody in his entire family including his wife.” Along with the job came managing the photo shoots and sometimes even the Penthouse pets who would do anything they could to get to Bob through Jane. Jane tells Robin she maintained a professional relationship with Guccione, developing a dear friendship, becoming his confidante over the years and the keeper of his secrets; which she cherishes to this day. Bob once told Jane he was convinced they were a priest and nun who knew each other in their past lives. She says, “In fact if that's true I believe I will see Bob again.”
Tedd sits down with former Penthouse Pet and Big Brother Houseguest Sheila Kennedy for a chat about her upcoming book, her time as Penthouse Pet of the Year, relationship with Bob Guccione and other famous boyfriends.
