In this episode of the Mindspace podcast, Dr. Joe speaks with Dr. Gabor Maté, retired physician, author, and world renowned educator. Dr. Maté has more than 20 years experience in family practice and palliative care. He has worked for more than a decade at the Portland Hotel in downtown East Side Vancouver with patients who suffer from mental illness and addiction. He is a world renowned expert in trauma, addiction, child development, psychedelics, and the relationship between stress and illness. He is the best selling author of four books like When the Body Says No and The Realm of Hungry Ghosts, for which he won the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize. And he also offers online video courses including Wholehearted's Healing Trauma and Addictions. His work now centres around educating the public on the impact of trauma and human development and training therapists in Compassionate Inquiry. Compassionate Inquiry is a therapeutic method developed by Dr. Maté whose focus is on helping the patient to “recognize the unconscious dynamics that run their lives and how to liberate themselves from them.” He also just released The Wisdom of Trauma on June 8th, 2021, a movie about his life's work. Dr. Maté and Dr. Joe spoke about: - Gabor's personal history with trauma - How traumatic experiences affect human development - The effects of trauma and stress during pregnancy and childhood on human development - How children adapt to trauma - The relationship between modern society, parenting, and child development - The wisdom of trauma - The definition of addiction - His view of the problems with the disease model approach to addiction - His non-pathologizing approach to understanding and treating addiction - The link between trauma and physical illness - The role of psychedelics in healing trauma - What he is optimistic about

ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause Text of article: (OCTOBER 12, 2019) Jermaine Massey came to Portland for a concert. He stayed at the DoubleTree Hotel in the Lloyd District. Now he is suing the hotel because of something that happened. To sue someone means "to take legal action against someone and try to get money from them because they have harmed you," according to Cambridge Learner's Dictionary. Massey says he was in the lobby. He was talking on his cell phone with his mother. A hotel manager called a security officer. The security officer asked Massey a lot of questions. They thought he was loitering ("to stand in a place or walk slowly around without any purpose," often illegally). The security officer and hotel manager called the Portland police. Two police officers took Massey to his room to get his things. Then they took him out of the hotel. Massey is African American. He says the hotel's action was discrimination because of his race. He says it was harassment. He made a video of his experience on his cell phone. The hotel apologized. It fired the manager and the security guard. It provided employees with training about discrimination. Massey is suing for $3 million for emotional damages (such as mental stress and anxiety) and $7 million in punitive damages (punishment) against the hotel. The lawyer says this will help to prevent future discrimination at all of the company's hotels across the nation. Since Massey posted his video on social media, many more African American people have reached out about similar experiences. Read by Eric Dodson. CC BY-NC-SA. From ESOL News Oregon by Timothy Krause. This week in Beer is a Conversation James Atkinson chats with Dainton Family Brewing Founder and Head Brewer, Dan Dainton, who recently took out the Champion Craft Beer Award at this year's Craft Beer Awards. Dan Dainton Dan started his brewing career at the James Squire Brewhouse at the Portland Hotel in 2011. Already experimenting with bold and quirky flavours, Dan's brewing skills churned out a Black Rye IPA (which was pretty out-there at the time) along with other over the top IPAs - much to the dismay of Chuck Hahn. Realising he wanted to flex his talent and palate beyond that realm of James Squire, Dan transitioned to Holgate Brewhouse to further develop his brewing and in the fresh air of Woodend. After this stint up in the mountains, Dan convinced his father, Kev, to embark on his beer journey with him. Together they co-founded Dainton Family Brewing with Dan gypsy brewing around Victoria from 2013 until mid 2016 until they established their own permanent facilities in Carrum Downs. Medals are no stranger to Dan and his kin at Dainton Family Brewing, with several of their brews earning awards at various judging events over the past few years. Dainton's Cherrywood Smoked Baltic Porter was brewed especially for this year's Craft Beer Awards and was ultimately named this year's Champion Craft Beer.

In which our heroes brace for impact, work on their catch phrases, fail to do cool-guy walks away from explosions and discuss cheesy action movies. We look at Whoopi Goldberg’s secret history with dinosaurs cops, the best 80s theme song and why anyone would use a hang-glider as a getaway vehicle. Jackson wants to know why bus drivers in real life never look like Sandra Bullock, Zoe ponders how effective segways would be in a chase sequence and special guest Nick Capper just wants a therapy sheep. So join the gang as they try desperately to reload their weapons in slow motion and refuse to work with anyone but Marlon Brando or the best chimp alternative. It’s loud, filled with cliches and you can bet there’ll be at least one montage.?? If you're a local you can see more of Nick Capper at 10.45pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival at the Portland Hotel or find him @capperflapper on twitter. Want to help us rebuild the studio after that sweet explosion that was completely unnecessary to the plot?
