A host of Melbourne International Comedy Festival comics gather to explore how comedy survives, thrives and occasionally lands a punch on authoritarianism. The powerful often say they have a sense of humour. This turns out to be true – provided the joke is about someone else. From public denunciations to legal action and intimidation, comedians across the world are increasingly required to work within narrowing spaces, where the right punchline at the expense of the wrong politician carries the risk of personal and professional consequences. When laughter is policed this closely, what does it reveal about the strength – and fragility – of power? Join host Tom Ballard alongside leading comic voices Bahaa Dabbagh, Leon Filewood and Sam Jay for a timely conversation on the role and power of comedy in an age of rising authoritarianism. This event was recorded on Saturday 28 March 2026 at The Wheeler Centre. It was presented in partnership with Melbourne International Comedy Festival Featured music is ‘Golden Hour’ by Sarah, the Illstrumentalist. Kenny is hosting this week with Australian and International, Melbourne based comedian, Tom Ballard as they discuss the news, views and reviews of the week that was. Tom Ballard is returning to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) in 2026 with a new stand-up show, “Be Funny Challenge (Impossible)”, running from March 26 to April 19, 2026, at Trades Hall. After a year away, Ballard's new 2026 show is described as a “relentless whirl of opinion, silliness, and increasingly bad-taste jokes,” focusing on politics, social issues, and current events. Nominee 2023 Melbourne International Comedy Festival Award for Most Outstanding Show Nominee Best Comedy 2023 Melbourne Fringe As seen on Fisk, Deadloch, Tonightly, Guy Montgomery's Guy Mont-Spelling Bee and Deal Or No Deal (for some reason). As heard on podcast Serious Danger. Tom and Kenny talk to Melbourne Comedian Alex Ward. Alex Ward is a comedian, writer, and presenter, best known for her whip-smart punchlines and regular appearances on Network Ten's Have You Been Paying Attention? Alex has appeared on Have You Been Paying Attention?, The Project, Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala, Upfront, ABC Comedy's Up-late, Audible's 2019 live stand-up series, Tonightly with Tom Ballard, Triple J's Good Az Friday, and performed at Splendour In The Grass. A person of prominence is dead. Immediately, the question raised is “what are you allowed to say about this person?” Specifically, how far are you allowed to go with any “jokes” about them? And what, if any, should the repercusions be if you go too far?No, don't worry, I haven't used the week off to rebrand as a right-wing conservative podcaster. I'm not even actually referencing current events. The above is actually the premise of "JKS: a comedy(?)" a new play premiering at the upcoming Melbourne Fringe Festival, written by and starring Tom Ballard. Thanks as always to Cindy MacDonald for writing the questions.I make this podcast on the lands belonging to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation and pay our respect to their elders past and present, while acknowledging their traditions of sharing knowledge and stories for millennia on this land.Get tickets to Jks: a comedy(?) here:https://www.melbournefringe.com.au/whats-on/events/jks-a-comedySupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-saturday-quiz.
