Ten lighthouses that for generations have stood like sentinels along America's shorelines protecting mariners from peril and guiding them to safety are being given away at no cost or sold at auction by the federal government. On Monday, May 22, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 341, which establishes a moratorium on California issuing new cardroom licenses for the next 20 years. Smaller existing cardrooms will be allowed to add limited new tables in the meantime. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is backing California Democratic Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis's bid to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) in 2026. The California Assembly's Public Safety Committee recently approved Assembly Bill 742, which aims to ban the use of police dogs for arrests, apprehensions, or crowd control, due to concerns of racial bias and violence. Dining on giant steaks offered by Pardini's Catering, the Fresno County chapter hosted 650 attendees at the Doubletree Hotel ballroom in downtown Fresno. The event also sees Mike Reilly, aka the ‘Voice of IRONMAN', calling his final North America event of his career.   Race day will see 55 age group qualifying slots, and an 100 extra slots for female athletes, for the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship taking place on October 12 & 14, 2023 in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i.   The course will take athletes along a 2.4-mile swim in Salt River, a 112-mile bike along the Beeline Highway, and a 26.2-mile run through Tempe and along the Salt River, finishing at Tempe Beach Park.   Ben Kanute (USA) will make his full-distance IRONMAN debut following a runner-up position at the 2022 Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission.   US athletes, Sam Long, Matt Hanson and Chris Leiferman, will challenge for a podium spot along with Great Britain's Joe Skipper and South Africa's Kyle Buckingham. A stacked field of pro females will include American athletes Sarah True, Skye Moench, and Lauren Brandon, who will go up against Canada's Jen Annett, Australia's Renee Kiley and many more.   IRONMAN Arizona 2022: Preview, start times and how to watch LIVE 14 Nov 2022 by John Levison Last week we highlighted our top five races for the remainder of 2022, and the first event on that list comes up on Sunday, the Biostarks IRONMAN Arizona.   Start time and how to watch live The Pro Men will kick-off their day with the 2.4-mile, single-loop swim in Salt River, Tempe, at 0640 local time, with the Pro Women starting five minutes later at 0645.   With Arizona on Mountain Standard Time, that means global race start times of: 1340 UK / 1440 CET / 0840 Eastern / 0540 Pacific.   The event will benefit from full live broadcast coverage, the final race of the 2022 IRONMAN long-distance season to be featured on their IRONMAN Now platforms via Facebook Watch and YouTube – and also embedded on this preview.   As always, the ever reliable IRONMAN Tracker is the perfect data addition to support your viewing. If you haven't got it on your phone already, where have you been?!   IRONMAN Arizona Pro Men A dominant winner at IRONMAN Wales and a career-best fifth at the IRONMAN World Championship suggests that Great Britain's Joe Skipper will arguably start as favourite, in what is a deep start list in Tempe. Big races in September, October and November might be considered sub-optimal for many, but based on history at least, there's little reason to believe that the Brit won't be physically and mentally ready to perform at his best, once again.   Looking back to 2019 for example, sixth in Kona was followed just over three weeks later by a fantastic victory at IRONMAN Florida, capped off with a 2:39 marathon. Success in back-to-back racing has proven to work for the six-time IRONMAN champion time after time. Even last year, he was totally dominant at IRONMAN Chattanooga, three weeks after second place IRONMAN Switzerland. He's seemingly at home racing in the U.S., too.   Joe Skipper 2022 photo credit IRONMAN Wales [Photo credit: IRONMAN Wales] The USA's Sam Long made plenty of headlines at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, but with that very contentious penalty on the bike, not the sort that he wanted. Winner in Gdynia, strong at the Collins Cup and a podium at the PTO US Open, the form is there – hopefully we'll get to see it on Sunday.   Sam Long St George photo credit Tom Pennington Getty Images for IRONMAN Sam Long at St George [Photo credit Tom Pennington/Getty Images for IRONMAN] The full-distance debut of Ben Kanute will be of particular interest, especially having turned around what was a mid-season of relatively under-whelming results by his standards. He put on a brilliant show at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, taking a second silver medal at the championship. Strong across all disciplines, he should be at the front of the race for much of the day.   Ben Kanute 2nd at IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship 2022 Photo: Patrick McDermott/Getty Images for IRONMAN When you then add Matt Hanson, Chris Leiferman, Kristian Hogenhaug, Bart Aernouts, Justin Metzler and plenty more into the mix, then the way that racing has been going over the last few years, you have to think that the course record figures of Lionel Sanders (7:44:29 from 2016), will be under threat.   You can be sure that Great Britain's Andrew Horsfall-Turner will be pushing the pace in the water from the get-go – and with Kanute likely wanting to be a part of that too, that would benefit the man from Wales too.   Pro Women The USA's Skye Moench (#10) is the PTO's top-ranked female professional set to race in Tempe, a race where she has previously finished 11th (2016) and fourth (2018). Winner of three IRONMAN titles since then – and having finished fourth in St George, ninth in Kona this year – she will rightly start as favourite.   skye-moench-kona-2022-bike (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images for IRONMAN) Illness ruined her Kona prospects, but Sarah True still has the class to be a factor in Arizona. A winner this year at Eagleman 70.3 and IRONMAN Lake Placid, the two-time Olympian now juggles triathlon alongside being a mother and studying.   Entering Arizona with a, ‘one race, one win' history over the distance after her debut performance at IRONMAN Lanzarote, Great Britain's Lydia Dant has made rapid progress inside her first year in the Pro ranks. On the bike in particular – aided by her skills as a bike fitter – Lydia has excelled, and will be looking to make progress on that fast roads of the IRONMAN Arizona course towards the front of the race, once out of the water.   Lydia Dant - IRONMAN Lanzarote 2022 finish Photo Credit: James Mitchell for Club La Santa After finishing 10th (St George) and 12th (Kona), you can't write off the podium prospects of the consistent Maja Stage Nielsen (DEN) either. The Dane is really consistent across all three disciplines. Jen Annett (CAN) has taken second place this year at both IRONMAN Des Moines and IRONMAN Mont Tremblant, and so is another athlete sure to be chasing the podium positions in the late stages.   You can find the full start list here.   Recent IRONMAN Arizona Pro winners 2019: Sara Crowley (AUS) – Pro women only race 2018: Eneko Llanos (ESP) / Heather Jackson (USA) 2017: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Kaisa Sali (FIN) 2016: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Meredith Kessler (USA) 2015: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Meredith Kessler (USA)   Prize Money: What's on the line? The prize purse on offer this weekend is $100,000 – with each of the winners collecting a $15,000 share of that total.   In addition to money, there will be a total of four qualifying slots (two MPRO* / two FPRO) for the IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii, 12 and 14 October 2023. A valuable opportunity to get the KQ box ticked well in advance.   (* Note – Joe Skipper is already qualified by virtue of his victory at IRONMAN Wales).   The total funds will be paid ten-deep, as follows: $15,000 $9,000 $7,000 $5,000 $4,000 $3,000 $2,500 $2,000 $1,500 $1,000   Of course, thanks to the formation of the Professional Triathletes Organisation, financial rewards from performance are not solely from on-the-day performances, and this is one of the few 2022 races remaining to improve your ranking.   The PTO World Rankings will see a total of $2million awarded at the end of 2022, based up on the final standings in those points tables. The rewards there can be substantial, with a move up or down the rankings system potentially earning you more than any individual event.     Odyssey Alcatraz Swim this Saturday   Have you always wanted to swim from Alcatraz? In addition to the swim itself, registration includes an event t-shirt, an Alcatraz Swim sticker, and a yellow silicone Alcatraz swim cap.   All Alcatraz swims will take place in the morning, usually meeting in San Francisco between 5 and 8am. The registration page shows an approximate check-in time, but swimmers will receive an email prior to the event with finalized details.       What's New in the 303: Introducing Colorado's Ride - Bill   Invitation to TriDot Pre Season Project The Preseason Project® is a triathlon research initiative that helps TriDot quantify and enhance the performance gains that TriDot's Optimized Training™ delivers over training alternatives. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, Oct. 5. The warmth is predicted to linger another day with a chance for rain Wednesday, with the temperatures dropping steeply by Friday. According to the National Weather Service, it will be partly sunny in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 75 degrees. On Wednesday evening it will be partly cloudy, with a low of around 54 degrees. There will be a 40 percent of showers Wednesday evening, mostly between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. A Linn County jury has found a Cedar Rapids woman who fatally stabbed her boyfriend guilty of a lesser charge after she had originally been charged with murder. Jacqueline Holmes, 38, faces up to five years in jail. After about a day and half of deliberations following more than five days of testimony, she was found guilty last Friday of the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter — unintentionally causing the death of her boyfriend, Tremaine Williams, 35, on March 4, 2020. A retired Illinois law and psychology professor, who consults and testifies in cases involving domestic violence, said during the trial that https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/defense-expert-says-cedar-rapids-woman-on-trial-for-fatally-stabbing-her-boyfriend-is-a-battered-w/ (Holmes was a battered woman )and suffers from its effects. She said Holmes told her about three men who physically abused her, including Williams. The https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/prosecutor-says-woman-delayed-getting-boyfriend-911-help-after-stabbing-him/ (prosecution had argued that Holmes )delayed getting help for Williams after she stabbed him in the shoulder at a southwest Cedar Rapids house. There also was testimony from an investigator that Holmes repeatedly changed her version of what happened that night during recorded police interviews. A company seeking to build a carbon dioxide pipeline through five Iowa counties, including Linn, says it will hold a second round of public meetings after confirming some landowners did not get proper notice of its August meetings. Wolf Carbon Solutions, based in Alberta, Canada, held meetings Aug. 29-31 in Johnson, Cedar, Linn, Clinton and Scott counties to talk about a proposed 280-mile underground pipeline that could transport carbon dioxide from ADM plants in Cedar Rapids and Clinton to an underground site in central Illinois. But many of the people who attended those meetings said they had not been notified by certified mail and questioned whether the process was legal. The Iowa Utilities Board Sept. 23 ordered Wolf to explain within 10 days how public notice was provided and verify certified letters were sent. The company setting new meetings could delay their project, but doing so may be preferable to providing certified addresses from affected landowners. Companies proposing other CO2 pipelines in Iowa have resisted publishing the names of all affected landowners. Opponents want those names to help unite opposition.  On Friday Former President George W. Bush will receive a humanitarian award and headline a fundraiser for the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Cedar Rapids. But don't expect a lot of news coverage of his visit. As part of an agreement with Bush's staff, media coverage of the event is not allowed, said Brad Reiners, communications director for the Hoover Presidential Foundation. The museum will present Bush and former first lady Laura Bush its first Hoover Humanitarian Award for their work in Africa. The former president and former first lady have worked to combat HIV/AIDS across Africa through the President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief. The effort has saved at least 18 million lives through critical care and treatment since 2003 when then-President Bush authorized it, according to the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Ticket sales for the fundraising banquet are closed. Proceeds will go toward a $20...

As I am sure you know by now, this is All Things Writing and I am your host Bryan the Writer. Thank you for joining me on this huge milestone of a show. We have done it, dear listener. We have broken through the barrier that is 1,500 downloads and are already well on our way to the next milestone.I could not have done it without the support of the people listening and the people who have come on the show to be my guests since I started this. Alright let's talk notes! As you know this show is really about my journey and sharing some of my tips and tricks as I have stumbled and bumbled my way through my writing life. One of the things I have had a really hard time with over the hears is keeping track of, and taking good notes. Creativity lives in the back of the human brain, not in the front. If you tried to will yourself, right now, to come up with five great book ideas in ten minutes, I want to suggest that is really hard to do. The best idea for a short story, which ended up in a magazine, came from a nightmare I had. Again, it was that back part of my brain that was fully engaged. But, and here is the important bit,I had to get up, run downstairs, and jot things down on a piece of paper. Then I let out a yawn and went back to bed. Early morning, and the middle of the night are the best times for the rear of the brain to do its best work. But that is the thing, we have all done a similar thing. So, what do you do with all those bits of paper and scraps of napkin you collect when the back of your brain is living its best life? Listen to the show and find out. Also, if you have not checked her out, head over to Ann Kroeker's site and check out her podcast. "I love to host, I love having people over. I feel that just being a therapist - a sense of community and a sense of belonging is really important. It’s something you need to achieve in your hierarchy of needs. When you bring people together to share a meal you get a sense of belonging. People are authentic when they’re eating; when you’re eating you feel safe. So for me, it’s safety and communion. " Sheena joins us this week to talk about all things casserole! She shares about her experiences growing up on a farm, learning to cook in restaurants, and how she was always destined to become a therapist (which she is great at, by the way). Sheena references white cucumbers, which apparently is a Southern thing? And shares about trying the DoubleTree Hotel chocolate chip cookie recipe, which we did by Zoom together a few months ago. We talk about the impact of being a therapist during the time of COVID, including the emotional challenge of holding space for other people's pain while simultaneously trying to navigate a global pandemic for oneself and one's family. She talks about the importance of family and of showing up for others. My favorite part of this episode was talking with Sheena about the concept of radical acceptance. Like a true therapist, Sheena describes it like this: "Acceptance is acknowledging the facts of a situation.Radical acceptance is accepting with your mind, your body, and your spirit. Noticing any tension in your body, any resentment that you feel, any anger that comes up when things happen that are outside of your control. And recognizing that you being angry and upset and tense about it isn’t going to change the situation. And radically accepting doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it eventually, it just means you acknowledge this is what it is and wholeheartedly continue to live your life anyway. It is one of those life skills you have to keep turning around to; it’s a practice, not a destination." Follow this link for more of Sheena's wisdom and insight. Make sure you are following us on Facebook and Instagram (@warm_lasagna_podcast) for even more photos and backstory. If you like the show, be sure to share it with someone you love - maybe even drop us a 5-star review. UPDATE: Sheena wanted to share that she was actually thinking of green jello salad, not watercress salad. I think we can all agree it looks disgusting. Ben Berthelot has served as Executive Director of the Lafayette Convention & Visitors Commission since 2012 and in that role, is an enthusiastic and effective spokesperson for the restaurants, hotels, and related industry tourism professionals that support our region's unique cultural attributes. In this episode of Discover Lafayette, Ben visits with Jan Swift about the devastating impact of the COVID-19 shutdown on the tourism industry and the hopeful signs he is witnessing as Louisiana enters Phase 2. Currently serving as Chair of Louisiana Travel Association, Ben Berthelot was appointed to the Resilient Louisiana Commission Hospitality/Tourism Task Force that counsels Gov. John Bel Edwards on the needs of the tourism industry as it emerges from the shutdown. 52% of local unemployment claims have come from people working in food service or accommodations. Since mid-March, Lafayette has lost 38,540 room nights with a $51 million impact to the economy which accounts for the typical meeting, sports, and convention traffic. This number does not include the loss of $50 million from the cancellation of Festival International or the additional loss from leisure and corporate travelers, and the many other annual festival attendees who stop in Lafayette while in the region. Nationwide, eight million jobs have been lost in the tourism industry since mid-March 2020, which is nine times more than that affected by 9/11. In Lafayette, the effect has been dramatic; in mid-March, the room occupancy rate was down to 23% and revenue dropped by 70%. One major shot in the arm that has helped local hotels and restaurants is the reopening of the youth sports market, which is a major draw for families around the region. In early June, a softball tournament that drew teams to the area netted over $1 million in economic activity and a 65% room occupancy rate on the Saturday night of the tournament. While one night's economic burst won't turn the market around to profitability, Ben stated that it does go to show the immense power of the youth market on tourism in our market. He also pointed out that major investments made in sports complexes in Youngsville, Broussard, Carencro's Pelican Park, and Erath are tremendous assets that will continue to draw in crowds. Further, many of the sports activities that attract the crowds are amenable to the social distancing requirements and limiting the numbers in attendance; most youth sports draw parents and grandparents rather than huge crowds of other spectators, and limiting the number of people in the dugouts to 10 can easily be accommodated. Ben shared a few examples which highlight the impact on local employment: the Doubletree Hotel, Lafayette's largest hotel, was down from 130 employees to 12; the Cajundome staff was down to 2 employees and has been dealt a major blow in revenue with the cancellation of the Cajunland State Fair, multiple concerts, and other events. At this point, no one knows when concerts will be allowed to take place. The Resilient Louisiana Hospitality Task Force has made it known to state officials that Local venues must know by July 1, 2020 if events will be allowed to occur so that planning for Festival Acadien and other events may move forward, according to Berthelot. Eat Lafayette began earlier than scheduled this year to help local restaurants with marketing and to remind area residents of the need to patronize locally-owned restaurants. With all registration fees waived, over 200 restaurants are participating; usually over the past 16 years, about 100 restaurants would participate. With Phase 2 allowing 50% occupancy in restaurants, Ben is optimistic that the restaurants will now enjoy a more stable base of customers returning to their establishments. Lafayette was selected as the site for TBEX North America 2020- the Travel Blogger Exchange which is currently scheduled for October 7 - 9, 2020. With an average of $41 million in earned media ...

On the evening of April 8, 1997, attorney Jeffrey Smith waited for his wife, Judy, to meet him at a cocktail party hosted inside the DoubleTree Hotel in Center City Philadelphia. The couple had traveled from Boston the day prior, with Jeffrey scheduled to attend a conference while Judy enjoyed some sightseeing around town. But as 6pm came and went, Jeffrey quickly realized something was wrong. Judy failed to arrive that evening, and her husband's search efforts were fruitless, so he called the police for assistance. Despite the best effort of local detectives, Judy's absence remained a mystery. Five months, later, however, a father and son hunting in the mountains outside Asheville, NC discovered the remains of what seemed to be a middle-aged woman who was stabbed to death. Soon enough, her identity is revealed through dental work, and it's apparent the mystery woman is indeed Judy Smith. But how did she end up there, and, more importantly, who killed her? Join host Ryan Kraus for a psychological exploration of the emotional narrative Judy Smith left in the wake of her baffling disappearance.

Man Sues Portland Hotel for Discrimination

ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause Text of article: (OCTOBER 12, 2019) Jermaine Massey came to Portland for a concert. He stayed at the DoubleTree Hotel in the Lloyd District. Now he is suing the hotel because of something that happened. To sue someone means "to take legal action against someone and try to get money from them because they have harmed you," according to Cambridge Learner's Dictionary. Massey says he was in the lobby. He was talking on his cell phone with his mother. A hotel manager called a security officer. The security officer asked Massey a lot of questions. They thought he was loitering ("to stand in a place or walk slowly around without any purpose," often illegally). The security officer and hotel manager called the Portland police. Two police officers took Massey to his room to get his things. Then they took him out of the hotel. Massey is African American. He says the hotel's action was discrimination because of his race. He says it was harassment. He made a video of his experience on his cell phone. The hotel apologized. It fired the manager and the security guard. It provided employees with training about discrimination. Massey is suing for $3 million for emotional damages (such as mental stress and anxiety) and $7 million in punitive damages (punishment) against the hotel. The lawyer says this will help to prevent future discrimination at all of the company's hotels across the nation. Since Massey posted his video on social media, many more African American people have reached out about similar experiences. Read by Eric Dodson. CC BY-NC-SA. From ESOL News Oregon by Timothy Krause. We took a fantastic trip back in October. We went to London, Paris, and Scotland. We did this trip in a pretty short amount of time, but we have a lot of inside tips and tricks and links that can help you get the most out of your London, Paris, and Scotland trip.   This all came about because Chris is a Titans fan and found out about the NFL experience in London where the Titans were playing the Chargers and the NFL Experience helps plan your trip. Chris had never been to London before, and he and Di decided to add on a few more days to go to Paris and Scotland too.   This is an in depth episode where we walk you through our amazing trip, and we share tips and things that will help you get the most out of a similar trip. We also include all kinds of links and resources that can help with your planning and with getting ideas on how to make your trip your own. We also throw in some great pro tips to avoid things like jet lag.   Show Notes   [02:03] Chris is a Titans fan. The Titans had a game in London against the Chargers. Chris thought it would be great to go to the game. Diane had been to London before, but Chris hadn't. [02:55] The NFL experience is all about seeing your team play. It's a great way to get tickets, but they also help coordinate the hotels and help plan things. It's a little more expensive, but we had a great time. The event was amazing. [04:12] We also added some extra days for Paris and Scotland. [04:22] The NFL experience was 5 days. You get a couple days before the game, then see the game and head home. [04:31] We got there a day ahead. We also didn't want to have jet lag. [05:03] We started exploring options. We even considered Ireland, but decided to check out Scotland. [05:34] Paris was also only a Chunnel ride away. [06:38] We flew into Heathrow overnight which was a genius idea with helping to combat jet lag. Pro tip: take an overnight trip and don't mess up your sleep patterns. [07:50] Arriving refreshed will allow you to hit the ground running. [08:13] From Indianapolis to Heathrow, we had a layover in Chicago and we have the Admiral Club. If you can, get a day pass for the Admiral Club if you have a layover. [09:46] We stayed in two different places in London. We arrived a day early and stayed at the Hilton on Park Lane for the first night. Then with the NFL Experience we stayed at the Sheraton Grand Park Lane. [10:20] The Park was right across the street from Buckingham Palace. We also used points at the Hilton and it was fabulous. As diamond members, we had our first afternoon tea. [11:30] tea is a wonderful experience with tea and pastries. We watched the double decker buses and it was great. [11:55] Then we began exploring the neighborhood. [12:07] Chris found a place on Yelp. He found Burger & Lobster. [14:24] We joined the NFL Experience at the Sheraton. We were all rested, and everyone else was tired. If your room isn't ready, you can leave your bags at the desk. [15:34] We kicked things off with a Double Decker bus tour. We saw a lot of the city and got to know people in the group. We also had happy hour with the group. They feed you and give you drinks. [16:27] You have options of things to do, but you don't have to do everything, so you can enjoy down time. [16:49] We ended up at the London Eye on the Thames. Our London Eye tour was a champagne tour. There was a big cart full of champagne. [19:44] The second day we saw the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. [22:09] We went to the Barrowboy & Banker Pub Fan Rally where we got to meet some of the players. [24:19] We also went on a dinner cruise on the Thames (The Dixie Harmony). There was music and drinks, and we went up and down the river and they opened up the Tower Bridge. [27:03] The next day was game day at Wembley Stadium. All of the teams were represented, because this is a huge event for Europe. [29:02] It was like a cross between a rugby match and an NFL game. People were dressed in crazy costumes and were like fanatics. [30:55] We took the Eurostar Chunnel to Paris We were only two or three hours away from Paris. Chris wanted to see the Eiffel Tower and the Mona Lisa. [33:00] The train was clean and comfortable and it really flies. [33:46] Pro tips: Give yourself time for Chunnel security and have the things you need. We left our belongings in London, which kept us moving quickly. [35:01] They took the Hop-on-Hop Off bus, it's an easy mode of transportation, plus you can sightsee. They hopped off at the Louvre and took the skip the line small group tour. We went straight to the front of the line. Another awesome perk was skipping the bathroom line. [40:59] Chris did research on. There are seven major pieces of art. He found great reviews on his short museum tour where they got to see the main pieces. It was fast, but not rushed. [43:22] We got back on the Hop-on-Hop off bus and saw Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and the Arc de Triomphe. We got to see a lot of things while staying on the bus. [45:11] There were tons of cafes. We ate at Five Guys. [46:50] We got back on the train and went back to London. [47:16] We found a local train to Scotland. Chris wanted to see St. Andrews, go to a scotch distillery, he also wanted to drive on the left side of the road. [49:45] The train was the best option from London to Edinburgh. [50:54] We stayed at the Hilton in Edinburgh. The castle was amazing. We walked around town and went up to the castle. [52:54] We had tacos in Scotland. Chris almost bought a kilt. We discovered the Whisky Experience. [54:42] They talk you through the five regions of scotch which are Highland, Lowland, Speyside, Campbeltown, and Islay. You learn how scotch is made. We get to try the regional whiskeys. [57:44] We had pizza at a place that gives you a blanket. We went to a local pub. There was a Scottish jam session. [01:02:08] We had to rent a car to go to St. Andrews. The steering wheel was on the right side. There are also a lot of roundabouts. [01:05:58] St. Andrews is a public golf course. We took a tour of the grounds and heard about the history of how the course came about. [01:09:18] Scotland reminded Di of Ireland. Driving through the countryside was a great experience. It's beautiful and gorgeous during the day, but scary at night. [01:10:54] We stayed at a gorgeous boutique hotel called the Braemar Hotel - Craigendarroch Suites (Hilton).  It was a suite with an old castle type of feel. [01:11:52] There are little squirrel figurines all over the property, and they all wear different outfits. [01:12:59] We stopped at the Glenfiddich Distillery. There were woolly Scottish cows that are super cute. [01:15:39] The Scottish countryside is amazing. [01:17:41] We took an Uber to the Doubletree Hotel for and early morning airport run. Always give yourself plenty of time.   Links and Resources: Get a Free MOnth of Audible and A Free Book Travel Money Belt American Airlines Admirals Club Hilton on Park Lane Sheraton Grand Park Booking.com NFL Experience London Eye Barrowboy & Banker Pub Changing of the Guard Dixie Queen London (booking.com) Eurostar- Chunnel Louvre Museum Skip the Line Small Group Tour Hop-on-Hop-Off Paris Glenfiddich Distillery Tour The Chunnel Admiral Club Yelp Burger & Lobster Five Guys   For pictures, tips and more, be sure to check out our Fly with Chris and Di Facebook page and signup to download a copy of The Best City for You. The beginning of the year is definitely a great time to set aside space for self reflection, both on the year gone by and the year stretching ahead. This can help you stay the course or correct your course. In this episode we want to offer you two simple but powerful tips for making 2019 an epic year. Plus, we are going to be sharing a lot of books with you. So get ready to channel your inner student! Making 2019 an Epic Year The way that you best achieve goals is going to depend on your personality and how you respond to expectations. A couple books that I highly recommend when it comes to setting goals are Better Than Before and The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin. Having an understanding of what makes you tick will enable you to make the most progress in your life.Take Daily Action The fact is that you can set all the goals you want but to actually carry them out you have to take daily action. It’s not enough to dream that a future version of yourself is more disciplined or virtuous. The things you do today are making your future self. So start today with your goals. Maybe this is the year that you’re going to build back your running base, train for your first half marathon, your first marathon, your first ultra, train for a PR, or make changes in your eating. Whatever the goals you have to be very clear about what you want and what it will take to get there. If it’s helpful you can enter these daily action steps on your calendar so you have constant reminders and can get the satisfaction of checking them off. Part of taking action involves getting the support you need. Most people do best when they are surrounded by an encouraging support system. Maybe that means a friend, family member, online group, journaling, or an app. The bottom line is that you don’t have to go it alone. Maybe you’ve been interested in or on the fence about Academy membership. Our goal is to have your back. To be positive, encouraging, and help you make your running goals a reality.Set Bigger Goals If you’ve just started to run the thought of running a marathon is going to seem overwhelming. It can even seem overwhelming even when you’re in the midst of marathon training. But as you take daily action you will grow as a person and will be able to set bigger goals. This will give you an increased sense of confidence which will lead to more growth. Part of the process of setting bigger goals involves not being afraid to fail. Many of us fall into the perfection trap and tend to avoid committing to anything that we’re not sure we can accomplish and avoid things that might make us look foolish. But if you truly have the desire to do something, don’t let the fear of failure hold you back. Former Navy Seal Brad McLeod says this, “Don’t be afraid to fail. Without failure you won’t know your limit. And it is impossible to win every day. You may even feel like you are regressing at times. This is where you have to fight through.” Failure doesn’t have to have such a negative stigma. In fact, if we never failed we’d be completely perfect (and I’ve never met a perfect human). Fear is one of those tricky emotions that needs to be examined before it’s acted upon. Finally, having a growth mindset doesn’t mean that you’re constantly dissatisfied with where you are in life or with what you’ve accomplished. It’s also not helpful to be constantly comparing yourself with other people, which is often what social media draws our attention to. Often we’re comparing our worst with someone else’s best. Sometimes the running world can leave you with the impression that you’re not fast enough, you don’t have enough endurance, you’re not thin enough, or you’re not making progress quickly enough. I’ve thought all those things too. But feeling like you’re not enough doesn’t actually lead you into a positive space for growth. It leaves us stuck and discouraged which saps our energy. As we continue into this year I’d encourage you to do it with the mindset that you are enough. This will lead to more progress as you take action and set bigger goals. Knowing that you are enough will give your efforts a sense of positive energy. My Goals for 2019 To write a daily gratitude list. Increase to 20 minutes of daily meditation. Spend more one on one time with my boys. Run a sub 4 marathon. Run a marathon in 3 new states. Consistently strength train 2-3 times per week. Continue reading good books. And speaking of books . . . Books I Enjoyed Last Year I read a total of 263 books in 2018 (more non-fiction than fiction which was a first for me). Here are my top 7 favorite non-fiction books from last year: Daring Greatly, How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the way we Live, Love, Parent and Lead by Brene Brown (I also highly recommend her books Rising Strong, Daring Greatly, and Dare to Lead). She talks about vulnerability, whole heartedness, shame, and courage. The fear of vulnerability is at the core of many of our difficult emotions. She writes, “When we shut ourselves off from vulnerability, we distance ourselves from the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives.” Her message calls us to dare greatly and strive for whole heartedness in our lives. Get Well Soon, History’s Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them by Jennifer Wright. As a nurse I’m fascinated by the history of diseases, epidemics, and medical practices of the past. This book is a great blend of history, storytelling, some very gruesome practices, and humor. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. This is the autobiographical tale of Bill Bryson who after living in the UK for many years returns to the US and decides to hike the Appalachian Trail with a good friend from the past. He’s an amazing storyteller and dives into the history of the Trail along with his preparation and experiences alongside it. I just recently learned that it was made into a movie that was released in 2015. The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. This book tells the story of the 1936 US men’s Olympic 8 person rowing team. These were just ordinary young men after the Great Depression from poor backgrounds that were transformed into a force to be reckoned with. They went on to defeat the elite Eastern rowing clubs and compete in the 1936 Olympics in front of Adolf Hitler, defeating Germany’s Aryan team. Snoop: What Your Stuff Says About You by Sam Gossling. This is written by a psychologist who studies how people project and protect their inner selves by looking at their belongings. He can predict with uncanny accuracy so many things by looking at people’s stuff. There’s a lot of interesting research, psychology and stories packed into this book. Let Your Mind Run by Deena Kastor. Deena does an amazing job of weaving her personal story of training and growth along with inspiration for the reader. There is so much about mental toughness and mindset that can be gleaned from this book. Endure by Alex Hutchinson. This books explores the variable limits of the human body and mind where it relates to human performance, particularly long distance running.More Books Mentioned in This Episode North: Finding My Way While Running the Appalachian Trail by Scot Jurek Run Strong Stay Hungry: 9 Keys to Staying in the Race by Jonathan Beverly Run for Your Life by Dr. Mark Cucuzzella Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt A History of Canada in Ten Maps: Epic Stories of Charting a Mysterious Land by Adam Shoalts Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike by Charlotte GrayAlso Mentioned in This Episode Generation UCAN, our go-to fueling source for long runs and races. 65 - Book Review: Talk Triggers by Jay Baer and Daniel Lemin

B2B Marketing and More With Pam Didner

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2018 5:33

I just finished reading Talk Triggers by Jay Baer and Daniel Lemin. The book offers a complete guide to creating customers through word of mouth. It totally exceeds my expectations. Jay and Daniel provide what they call the 4,5 and 6 systems. They talk about the 4 requirements for a talk trigger which gets your customers to spread the word for you. Then they identify 5 types of talk triggers that you may be able to use for your marketing outreach, and they end the book with 6 steps that you can take to implement a complete word-of-mouth strategy. A solid framework for a book! According to them, repeatable, differentiated and relevant word-of-mouth is not a gimmick, but a business decision. Jay and Daniel used the DoubleTree Hotel as an example. Presenting guests with chocolate chip cookies when they check in at DoubleTree hotels is unique and repeatable customer experience and relevant to their brand. The simple and delicious chocolate chip cookies give their guests an opportunity to talk about the treat and their experience. A chocolate chip cookie which is reasonable, repeatable, relevant and remarkable is a trigger to get their guests to share on social media. And it’s a business decision. Talk triggers can also be implemented by small businesses. Lockbusters, a locksmith in New York City, offers a fair and fixed price and sticks to it. Whey they fix your lock, they will also oil all the other locks, not just the lock they fixed, for free. Also, they’ll perform a complimentary security audit. Who doesn’t appreciate a free service like that? Again, this is repeatable, reasonable, relevant and differentiated enough to entice their customers to talk about Lockbuster. Jay and Daniel share many such examples in their book. Whenever I read a business book, I always think how I can apply some of the authors’ ideas to what I do. When I was reading these examples, I was thinking about what strategies I can implement as repeatable, reasonable, unique enough to my brand and relevant to my customers. I came up with one idea that ties to my book launch: If you read my book and can’t find anything useful, no problem, schedule a call with me. I want to hear your challenges and come up with a solution or even a template for you. Seriously, if you are a marketing manager or salesperson that read my book, but you can’t find anything useful, just reach out. I want to help. Their book, especially the 6 steps how to implement WOM,  inspired me to share examples in the book with my teams and dig deep into our understanding of our customers and our digital purchase journeys to see what we can improve and how we can generate talk triggers. We came up with several ideas that we want to implement in 2019. We will see how it goes. Not everything we implement will generate word-of-mouth, but it’s important that we keep trying and testing. Several memorable quotes that I want to share with you from the book: “Talk triggers aren’t gimmicks; they are business choices.” “Experiencing your business firsthand, just as a customer would, can help you identify potential talk triggers.” “Same is lame.” I really enjoyed the read. The book is structured in a logical flow and packed with solid case studies and research data. Check out the book on Amazon. One more note: Jay and Daniel talk the talk and walk the walk. When they sent their book out to industry influencers and peers, they add a little-stuffed alpaca, a tin can of Hilton Double Tree Cookies, and an Uberflip headband. A big package. Many people took videos and photos of unboxing the package they receive from Jay and Daniel. They created a talk trigger and generated millions of free impressions to help them build buzz for the book. Well-done, Jay and Daniel. Send me your marketing questions via @pamdidner. If you have a book that you want me to do a review, let me know. Keep hustling, my friends. You got this.

Talking tourism with the incredible perspective it all brings to our beautiful city with General Manager of Biltmore Farms Hotels, Robert Foster. Greg has lots of questions about if the city can sustain the growth, the balance of locals to visitors and more. Robert shares a wealth of knowledge, both from his personal and professional experience, including the fact that there has been a 26% increase in hotel rooms and what he feels that means for guests coming in to Visit Asheville. He shares some of what is going on in terms of tourism growth, expansion in to new areas including the creation of 26k jobs and overall impact in Buncombe County and beyond. This episode is jam packed with fun facts too, like the Doubletree Hotel was the old Biltmore Farms Dairy, the amazing beer from Hillman Beer & Catawba and his fav restaurant which offers a Caliente Margarita and a Blood Orange Margarita (any guesses), What's up and coming, according to Robert, you'll have to listen till the end! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/experienceasheville/support

Hey hey! Welcome to episode 144 of Life on Fire TV. Today we’re talking about another important topic for entrepreneurs: technology. Specifically how to scale, automate and grow your business with technology And here to cover the ins and outs is Scott Robley from InfusionSoft. Scott was a teacher for 2 decades and has always had a passion for helping people learn and apply that knowledge to improve their lives. When he made the switch from education in the school system to educating entrepreneurs he knew he had found his home.  Today he gives us the 3 phases of lifecycle marketing and how to utilize them, 3 things every entrepreneur needs to be successful and and why having the right system, like Infusionsoft, is so vital to your success.  In this episode you’ll hear: Why people don't buy WHAT you do, but WHY you do it. (10:00) If you want something right - DON'T do it yourself! What to do instead. (17:15) Think your market is everyone? Think again - Scott explains. (19:20) Everyone is in this business - what is it? (22:30). An advanced strategy for getting referrals. (28:20) And so much more! The three phases of lifecycle marketing are important to know, they are the linchpin of your marketing process.  1. The first is attract. And there are three components to the attract phase: know your target audience. attract interest. collect your leads.  When you know who your people are you can attract the right fit for your business. And when you know them you can find out their pains so you can offer solutions.  From there it’s a matter of giving and serving. Scott says if you want to out-earn your competitors you have to out-give them. So after you’ve found your right people, attract them and give them great information that helps them and solves their problems. Naturally you’ll need to have a lead capture process for all of these interactions. 2. The second phase of lifecycle marketing is sell. As soon as some people find you they are ready to buy from you, but not most. So you’ll have to educate them, give them an offer and then close the deal.  Educating is most important step because you’ll add value, nurture, and share what you do and WHY you do it. In this stage and all others the more value you add the more natural it is to offer them something.  And when you make an offer you need two things: 1. relevancy and 2. permission. If you are relevant and they give permission it's offensive not to offer! 3. The third phase is the wow phase. In the wow phase you must deliver and wow, offer more and get referrals.  As Scott shares on this episode remember you've got to be different to make a difference. What do you do to wow your customers? What's your cookie ala the Doubletree Hotel chain?  Your wow doesn't have to be anything expensive but it must be something. And from this stage on it's game on! Offer more, wow them more. Sometimes it doesn't have to relate at all - just offer them more.  The last piece of the wow puzzle is get referrals. Scott has a very simple strategy to making this happen: ask for referrals! On this episode Scott also gives the pyramid of success for entrepreneurs: the 3 things each of us need to be successful in what we do no matter our business model.  The first is to get a coach, someone who is a few steps further down the road than you are. The second is find a community of like-minded people to support you and help you on your journey - and people you can also help.  And finally the last leg of the pyramid is to have a solid customer relations management system in place, like Infusionsoft, to automate and drive your lifecycle marketing process. There’s plenty more where that gold came from - listen in to episode 144 of Life on Fire TV to get it all! Thanks for being here and we’ll see you next time. The Liberal Dan Radio Program

On the April 16, 2014 episode of Liberal Dan radio. SCIENCE! I went to Tulane University on Monday to see Neil deGrasse Tyson speak about a plethora of different things. He was really great. If you have seen him speak about science before you would know that he is really awesome but in person made it that much better. I will review some of the things that he went over in his presentation and why I believe he could go into a career in politics and be awesome at it. He is not only brilliant, but he also has a love for this country that allowed his genius to grow. As Dr. Tyson seeks to make our nation smarter, the Food Babe is helping to dumb down our nation. She is responsible for getting Subway to remove the "yoga mat ingredient" from their bread recipie. She is now trying to claim that the Doubletree Hotel has anti-freeze in the free cookies given to guests. I will explain why her tactics are irresponsible. I will also be talking about the Bundy family and their standoff with the federal government. Nothing shouts hypocrisy more than a bunch of loudmouth teabaggers. Finally, I will also talk about poker star Phil Ivey. He is facing potential charges for what a casino calls cheating. But is it really cheating? Does government go too far to protect casinos? I will go into that as well.   Those topics, headlines, tweet of the week and more, Wednesday at 8pm central. If you missed the live broadcast you can always download the podcast and comment on the episode thread at liberaldan.com.
