Few figures of the American Revolution wielded words as powerfully as Thomas Paine. In this episode of the Revolution 250 Podcast, host Professor Robert Allison is joined by historian and journalist Jack Kelly, author of Tom Paine's War, for a wide-ranging conversation about Paine's outsized influence on the Revolutionary cause.Kelly explores how Paine's pamphlet Common Sense transformed colonial resistance into a popular movement for independence, reaching audiences far beyond elite political circles. The discussion traces Paine's role as a wartime propagandist, the impact of The American Crisis during the darkest days of the war, and George Washington's strategic use of Paine's words to sustain morale in the Continental Army. The episode also examines Paine's complicated personality, his transatlantic radicalism, and his uneasy place in the postwar United States, where the man who helped ignite the Revolution found himself increasingly marginalized. Together, Allison and Kelly consider why Paine mattered so deeply in his own time and why his ideas about liberty, democracy, and popular sovereignty continue to resonate 250 years later.A compelling look at the power of ideas in wartime America, this episode reminds us that the Revolution was fought not only with muskets and cannon, but with ink, paper, and the force of persuasion.Tell us what you think! Text Me!Have you ever hidden behind someone else's chaos to avoid facing your struggles? When one person in a family becomes labeled as "the problem," does it make it easier for everyone else's issues to fly under the radar? In episode 238 of Sober Vibes, I welcome Tom Farley to the show, and we talk about family addiction, grief, and Tom's recovery. Tom knows these family dynamics firsthand. As the brother of comedy legend, Tom spent years watching his sibling's very public battle with addiction while downplaying his relationship with alcohol. After Chris's devastating overdose, Tom poured his grief into advocacy, often speaking about his brother's addiction. But behind the scenes, he was still comparing himself to others whose addictions looked worse, convincing himself he didn't have “a real problem.”It wasn't until he surrendered seven years ago that Tom realized recovery is about so much more than abstinence. As he puts it, “I just needed the clarity that sobriety gave me so I could work on all these things.” Those “things” included finding his authentic self after decades of being known only as “Chris Farley's brother.”Tom is a passionate advocate for mental health and addictiontreatment. He works at Recovery.com, connecting people with the resources they need to heal. As a speaker and author, he shares his journey to break stigma, inspire hope, and foster connection. This amazing conversation explores how family roles, comparison, and grief can both hinder and, ultimately, shape our paths to recovery. What You'll Learn in This Episode:Growing up in a large Irish Wisconsin family where drinking was normalizedHow his brothers' visible struggle made it easy for Tom to minimize his drinkingTom's multiple sobriety attempts, including five years before relapseThe turning point that led him to lasting recovery nearly seven years agoHow he learned to separate the “addictive Chris” from the brother he lovedWhy vulnerability is essential in building genuine connections in sobrietyTom's journey to finding his authentic self and his purpose in recovery advocacyConnect with Tom:Recovery.com Podcast Tom's Book Resources Mentioned:Sober 1:1 Coaching The Sobriety Circle The After-Emotional Sobriety GuidePODCAST SPONSOR:This episode is sponsored by Soberlink, a trusted accountability tool for anyone navigating early recovery. That's the question plaguing Jack Ryan Jr. He's in Guyana to work a deal to get his company, Hendley Associates, in on the ground floor of this new discovery, but the destruction of the Claiborne and the kidnapping of the Guyanese Interior Minister make it clear that there's a malignant force working to destroy Guyana's oil industry. Tom Blomqvist has been one of the quickest drivers in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competing in the top level GTP category. We caught up with him just prior to the 2024 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach where he filled us in on his transition from IMSA GTP to the NTT IndyCar Series with Meyer Shank Racing (MSR). It's a fascinating conversation as he candidly talks about the challenges of switching categories and the key differences between the two types of race cars. It's a real insiders look at the technical side of racing in layman's terms. Enjoy! NOTE: At Long Beach, he qualified 15th while his teammate was on pole. Blomqvist finished in 22nd while Rosenqvist finished 9th. Unfortunately for Tom, the opening lap of the Indy 500 saw him spin and crash with other cars involved. After that, he was replaced as a driver on the team. However, the team owners still believed in his immense talent and retained him for the year. Starting this weekend at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, he'll be back behind the wheel of an MSR GTP car looking to score another Rolex 24 win.

Tom Clancy Shadow State (A Jack Ryan Jr. Novel) by M.P. Woodward https://amzn.to/3SQmW66 Surviving a helicopter crash in the Vietnamese Highlands is only the start of the challenges facing Jack Ryan, Jr., in the latest propulsive thriller of this #1 New York Times bestselling series. The vibrant economy of the new Vietnam is a shiny lure for Western capital. Companies are racing to uncover ideal opportunities. Not wanting to be left behind, Hendley Associates has sent their best analyst, Jack Ryan, Jr., to mine for investment gold. And he may have found some in a rare earth mining company—GeoTech. But a trip with a Hendley colleague to the Highlands to observe the company's operations takes a treacherous turn when their helicopter is shot down. Some things haven't changed, and Vietnam is still the plaything of powerful neighbors. The Chinese are determined to keep Jack from finding the truth about what exactly is being processed at the isolated factory. Now Jack is in a race for his life. He's got to stay one step ahead of a pack of killers while supporting his wounded friend. He'll get no help from the government, because in the jungle, it's the shadow state that rules.About the author M.P. Woodward is a veteran of both US intelligence ops and the entertainment industry.
