Before founding creative studio Corner Booth, Carolyn co-founded Casetta Group, the acclaimed boutique hospitality brand known for transforming forgotten roadside motels into soulful, design-forward stays that actually reflect the communities they're in. But her journey started far from the boardroom — as a cocktail server at the Ace Hotel in New York, where she first experienced the magic of what a hotel could be when it's built with intention and feeling. In this conversation, Carolyn unpacks how her background in the art world shaped her creative vision, how she approaches brand-building from the inside out, and why some boutique hotels manage to feel deeply personal — while others fall flat. You'll hear her thoughts on balancing timelessness with trendiness, her approach to embedding local artists and narratives into each property, and what she's learning as she advises clients across the U.S. and Europe through her studio. Plus: The real reason the front desk might be the most important brand ambassador of all Why copy-paste design is the death of boutique hospitality How to create a “microcosm of the community” — even in a space you didn't build from scratch Her thoughts on parent brands vs. standalone hotel brands — and where Cassetta fits in The importance of building with soul — and what gets lost when you cut the “extras” If you're building a hospitality brand or dreaming up your next project, this episode is a masterclass in curating space, story, and soul. What's up everyone, today we have the pleasure of sitting down with Kacie Jenkins, SVP Marketing at Sendoso. Summary: Marketing isn't about cramming creativity into a spreadsheet, and Kacie's journey proves it. She took on last-touch attribution, broke free from narrow metrics, and built a system that told the whole story, one where sales and marketing actually worked together. It wasn't flashy; it was months of unsexy foundational work that led to record-breaking results. Kacie's advice is to stop obsessing over proving your worth with perfect data. Focus on collaboration, long-term strategies, and building something so good it proves itself.About KacieKacie started her career as a recording artist for 6 years where she recorded and released 2 top 30's singles on country radioShe transitioned to FANDOM as Marketing Manager where she helped build and scale entertainment and gaming communitiesShe then shifted to consumer tech and worked at Roku where she helped take their streaming stick to marketShe later joined Fastly when they were still a tiny startup and was eventually promoted to VP of Marketing while helping them scale to $200M in ARR and a massive IPOShe moved on to a few other VP of marketing stints at Ace Hotel and then SourcegraphToday Kacie is Senior Vice President of Marketing at Sendoso, the top gifting and direct mail platform for revenue teamsWhy Marketing Needs to Break Free from Last Touch AttributionKacie has strong opinions about last touch attribution and its role in marketing, calling it both misguided and overused. She recounts a memorable example where a company's finance team mandated that every marketing touchpoint be unique, forbidding multiple efforts for a single account. The result was a fragmented strategy, with marketing forced to isolate efforts rather than integrate them—a scenario she describes as fundamentally broken. This, she says, reflects a wider misunderstanding of marketing's role in driving success. In her experience, marketing is often held to an unrealistic standard that no other department faces. “No one questions whether a sales team should exist,” Kacie points out, yet marketers are repeatedly asked to prove their value in isolation. This obsession with single-point attribution—whether first or last touch—reduces complex buyer journeys to simplistic, unrealistic models. She likens it to sports, where success is measured by the contributions of the entire team, not just the final goal or play. In marketing, the same principle applies: campaigns succeed when brand, product, sales, and customer experience work cohesively.Kacie highlights how marketers often agree to flawed measurement practices under intense job pressure. Many leaders, she notes, demand immediate, trackable results and dismiss longer-term investments like brand building. When these short-sighted strategies fail, the blame lands on the marketing team, perpetuating a destructive cycle. This became especially apparent during the pandemic, when companies slashed budgets for brand and integrated marketing, only to see their performance suffer months later. At its core, the problem stems from a demand to quantify marketing in ways that are convenient rather than meaningful. Kacie insists that attribution models like last touch can provide insights but have been misused to force marketing into a demand capture role that undervalues its broader impact. Effective marketing, she argues, cannot succeed in a vacuum—it depends on the health and alignment of the entire organization.Key takeaway: Attribution models like last touch offer insights but become problematic when used in isolation. Marketing thrives on collaboration across teams, long-term investments, and integrated strategies. Simplistic measurement frameworks undermine this by reducing success to isolated metrics, which fail to capture the bigger picture. Focus on fostering collaboration and investing in holistic strategies rather than chasing immediate, trackable wins. What's the Best Way to Prove What Drives Revenue in Marketing?Kacie's candid take on the challenges of attribution didn't stop there. She explains that board members and leadership often seek simple answers, asking, “What drove the most revenue?” This, she notes, is rarely a question with a singular answer, and it certainly doesn't lie solely in the last touchpoint. Her approach combines every available data point, UTMs, self-reported attribution, and multi-touch models, to create a comprehensive picture. This isn't about assigning credit to one channel or tactic but understanding the collective influence of all touchpoints. For instance, at Sendoso, Kacie leveraged this holistic perspective to reinvigorate outbound sales. By investing in trust-building, strong branding, and thoughtful partnerships, the team shifted outbound calls from cold to warm, creating an environment where sales and marketing aligned seamlessly. The results were tangible, but proving causality required a deeper story, not just a simple report. She recalls challenging her finance team's reliance on last-touch data. When presenting a report that suggested “more direct traffic” as the solution, she asked bluntly, “What does that even mean?” This moment underscored how reductive metrics fail to capture the true impact of marketing efforts. By shifting the focus to sales-qualified opportunities and long-term patterns, she built trust with stakeholders and steered conversations toward what truly drives growth.Kacie emphasizes that this broader view isn't fast or easy, and it requires fighting against short-term thinking. Marketers must advocate for strategies that don't immediately show up in last-touch reports but are essential for sustainable growth. She also draws from B2C insights, where buying decisions often happen long before measurable touchpoints, reminding us that customers' journeys rarely follow a predictable path.Key takeaway: Attribution isn't about isolating success to one channel or tactic. By combining multiple data sources and focusing on long-term causality, marketers can tell a more accurate story. This approach builds trust with leadership, aligns teams, and justifies investments that might not show immediate ROI but are crucial for sustainable success. How to Convince Leadership to Rethink MeasurementKacie explains that driving change in marketing attribution and measurement requires aligning cross-functional teams and proving value over time. When she joined Sendoso, the disconnect between sales and marketing created distrust, and outdated metrics like MQLs dominated conversations. To address this, she set clear expectations with leadership: changes would be foundational, require significant investment, and take time to show results. This up-front agreement ensured her efforts had initial backing, though challenges arose as the process unfolded.A crucial part of the transformation was bridging the gap between marketing and finance. Kacie worked with a finance partner who embraced curiosity, seeking to understand marketing's perspective by educating himself through webinars and discussions. This mutual respect and collaboration were essential for aligning goals and building trust. She demonstrated that her approach wasn't about gaming numbers or securing credit but about laying a foundation for sustainable growth.Despite initial alignment, skepticism crept in as foundational work—cleaning up Salesforce fields, rethinking sales stages, and redefining metrics—took longer to yield visible results. Kacie emphasizes the importance of perseverance during this phase. Companies often lack the patience for foundational changes, cutting le...

John Wyatt, the founder of Cinespia, joins host Jessica Kantor for this week's episode of Raising Cinephiles.Founded by entrepreneur John Wyatt in 2002, Cinespia has built an avid online following of well over 250,000 fans through its eighteen-year history. The organization also hosts screenings, concerts, and film premieres at classic movie palaces in downtown Los Angeles.Wyatt attributes the success of Cinespia to his belief that “there's a need in L.A. for people to get together and watch films with each other. That's how these films were meant to be seen: on the big screen with a large audience, emoting, screaming, and laughing. The picnics, the DJs, the community experience, these things transform the movie-going experience.”Over the years, Cinespia has also become a popular attraction for Hollywood directors, producers, and actors. In 2014, Cinespia produced the annual Cinefamily fundraiser with Team Downey, showcasing the films of Robert Downey, Sr., with a benefit hosted by Louis CK at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Cinespia's stellar array of guest appearances to present the films being shown also include Drew Barrymore, Patricia Arquette, Lena Waithe, director Cameron Crowe, Paul Reubens, and Questlove.Past notable events include the FYC screening event for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the premiere of Wonderstruck, and activations for Academy Award-nominated films such as Suspiria and Beautiful Boy.Films discussed:King KongWinnie The PooClash of the TitansRaiders of the Lost ArkThe 400 BlowsBlade RunnerStar WarsTampopoManhunterLa Bande Du DrugstoreElviraThe ShinningGooniesBreakfast at Tiffany'sThe Wizard of OzThe Lego MovieSpongeBob SquarepantsMr Show New Episodes Every Wednesday!EPISODE CREDITS:Host, Producer, Editor: Jessica KantorBooker: Noelia MurphyBe sure to follow and tag Raising Cinephiles on Instagram

It's been a wild May month so far for Outlook and we were off doing some cool things earlier in it. This week on the podcast, we share the details of our May weekend in Toronto as a part of the Architecture & Film Symposium, 2023, which took place on May 6th and 7th, hosted by Toronto Metropolitan University Creative School's Interior Design department. The theme this year was Intense Interiors and our exhibit was titled Outlook - A Multi-Sensory Installation, all based around the concept of mental mapping, a way of understanding and navigating one's surroundings and of spacial awareness for blind people. And, in our exhibit, we displayed a number of tactile maps of interiors and exterior city layouts, a box of inclusive and accessible mixed chocolates with a braille legend to help demonstrate the point of our Outlook installation, along with a number of 3D objects and other materials explaining the real life lived experience of blindness, with a focus on other sensory modalities for understanding the world around us, to counteract the misconceptions of blindness which can be found in one of this event's supplemental films: Blindness, 2008 (book authored by Jose Saramago). In this episode, we describe how we traveled to and within Toronto for the weekend and how we navigated the hotel and other accessibility features such as braille on doors and in hotel elevators, our Friday night spent with the founder and assistant of accessible braille fashion company Aille Design after Kerry decided to rent the Blue Braille Dress, a bit about some of the keynote presenters and panels on the Saturday at The Ace Hotel, and about our installation and discussions we had with interested parties who stopped by to find out more about us and our maps and other assorted accessible items; along with the showcasing of inclusive companies such as Aille Design, Purdys Chocolatier, and See3D. Thanks to the co-chairs of the symposium: Lorella Di Cintio, PhD and Vahid Vahdat, PhD. This event was a year in the making, a few times remnants of Covid made us think it wouldn't actually happen, and we were so glad to be in attendance. We finish off this week finally airing the audio paper we initially submitted for consideration in this year's proceedings to wrap up this one. (We will be posting the audio paper (nearly 10 minutes in length, as its own segment in this podcast feed in the coming weeks.) So for more on the symposium, check out the link below: http://architectureandfilm.org And make sure to check out and support the companies who graciously contributed to our installation: https://ailledesign.com https://www.purdys.com https://see3d.org

In his 15th year at NYU, David Hollander is Assistant Dean of Real World and Clinical Professor with the Preston Robert Tisch Institute for Global Sport. One of NYU's most popular professors, Hollander is the recipient of NYU's highest faculty honor, 2019 NYU Distinguished Teaching Award. He's also been recognized with highest NYU School of Professional Studies Honors: Award for Teaching Excellence (2018, 2012) and Award for Outstanding Service (2021, 2016) (only full-time faculty to win either award twice). Hollander's signature innovative experiential program Real World is one of the hottest programs at NYU, partnering with 45 A-list organizations like Nike, Porsche, JetBlue, Ace Hotel, Samsung. Axios called Real World "the future" of higher education. His only-of-its-kind humanities course "How Basketball Can Save the World" received international media attention including features from CBS News, SLAM, The Associated Press, The Washington Post and The New York Times. On Good Friday, April 12, 2022, major Italian media – la Repubblica, Corriere della Serra – credited Hollander and his class for helping sway the Vatican to recognize the first-ever Patron Saint of Basketball! For his extraordinary efforts in that cause, Hollander was awarded a “key to the city” by the Mayor of Porretta Terme.
There was a time in the U.S. - not all that long ago - when all of us fell into one of very few homogeneous groups. You were either an employer or employee - there was no such thing as a “gig economy worker” or “startup entrepreneur”. Very few people were openly members of any of the categories L, G, B, T or Q. And nobody referred to themselves as “neuro-divergent.” If you go back to your own memories of childhood, do you remember a time when you thought you didn't fit in? You probably do. Because, in reality, there is nothing objective to fit into. We learn to become what is expected of us. Or we did. Today, we have far greater freedom to become the person we truly want to be. Instead of trying to beat creativity and idiosyncrasies out of people, we see the wisdom of equipping atypical individuals with skills that will let them function, while retaining their individuality. That is Adela Baker's job. Adela is CEO of a company called Mind Coach NOLA. Mind Coach NOLA provides individual and group sessions to people Adela calls, “Turbo Thinkers.” Turbo Thinkers are folks who struggle with executive function skills and impulse management. A lot of Adela's clients are entrepreneurs and creatives. Growing up in Slidell, Gabriel Flores followed his own path. He started down the road to the million-dollar business he owns today when he was arrested - for spray painting on the walls at Slidell High. Today, Gabriel is owner of The Inkwell Press. The Inkwell Press designs and produces screen-printing and embroidery on a multitude of items, including T-shirts, professional work wear, promotional items like flags, koozies, glassware, and much more. An even greater connection to Gabriel's less than illustrious entrée into the art world is his allied company, New Orleans Paint & Design. It's acronym, NOPD, is a tip-of-the-hat to his origin story, and, even more ironically, the business itself is a mural painting company. You can see NOPD's murals all around New Orleans, including at Whole Foods, the ACE Hotel, Marjie's Grill, and in locally shot movies and TV shows. Talking with Adela and Gabriel brings to mind a two-word saying: “Be You.” Unfortunately, sayings like “Be you,” “You do you” and “Live your best life” have become social media cliches and memes. But for good reason. We keep encouraging each other with these bits of advice because being your authentic self and living the life you want to live with only a minimal amount of necessary compromise is an extraordinary challenge. Adela is devoting her professional life to giving people the tools to simply be themselves. And Gabriel is a textbook example of the kind of success a person can achieve by having the courage to simply do what makes you happy. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom. You can find photos from this show by Jill Lafleur at itsneworleans.com. Based on the video game franchise of the same name starring Pedro Pascal of "The Mandalorian" fame as Joel, and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, we begin our adventure with the duo and start to learn their journey. Enrique is a big fan of the series as he played the first game on release and has beaten The Last Of Us Part II, with the first part being in his top 5-10 video games of all time. Eli enjoyed the story of the game but the gameplay left him struggling to continue so he is excite to pick up the TV show, and Tristan is a virgin to the franchise! Since the trailer, we all have been excited to review episode 1 and are now patiently waiting for episode 2 to drop after the small little preview at the end of the episode! During the talk of the show, we talk about one of the best subtle horror scenes in television history, the introduction and death of Joel's daughter Sarah, the amazing world and how desensitized everyone is to it after 20 years have past! Listen to our reaction! After that, we talk about Chloe Grace Moretz's, of Kickass fame, newest project sci fi series The Peripheral! Our talks about the show included discussion our stupidity and how maybe we just don't have the brain capacity to dissect the entirety of the series. During how discussion we gave our loves to Conner the war veteran who lost all but one of his limbs in an explosion trying to save a dog in the war in Texas in 2032, how we felt a disconnect amongst many characters ESPICEALLY Tommy who was a mark azz trick, and how the show could of set itself up to have a really strong season 2 but didn't do what we would have liked to seen. Next week, we return to a sci-fi world when we watch Bladerunner 2049! Series Synopsis: The Last of Us is an American post-apocalyptic drama television series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for HBO. It is the first HBO series based on a video game, and is a joint production by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, the Mighty Mint, and Word Games. The first season consists of nine episodes written by Druckmann, who wrote and co-directed the original game, and Mazin. The score was composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, who composed for the game, and David Fleming The Peripheral is an American science fiction streaming television series executive produced and created by Scott Smith. We welcome cinematographer Linus Sandgren, ASC, FSC for his third time on the podcast. On his latest film, Babylon, Linus was happy to work with director Damien Chazelle again. The two had previously collaborated on La La Land and First Man. In all of his films, Chazelle thinks musically, and camera movement is essential to his films instead of just relying on editing. Linus liked Babylon's script- though it was long, it had many fast moving pieces, and the story was told in a refreshing, unconventional way. He thought of it as a 2.0 version of La La Land- it expressed Chazelle's love of cinema, and despite some of the dark places the story goes, he felt an affection for the characters in Babylon. Like La La Land, Linus combined long takes with complicated camera moves, while also using handheld verité techniques they developed on First Man. To prep for the film, Linus and Chazelle watched several Los Angeles-period films together, such as Chinatown, There Will Be Blood, and Boogie Nights. The movie combines absolutely maximalist wide shots to intimate closeups and tracking shots on specific characters, in order to keep the film emotional. One of the biggest and most spectacular scenes in Babylon is the 32-minute pre-title opening sequence, depicting a wild Bel Air party complete with revelers, cocaine, and an elephant. They shot it in the lobby of the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, crammed with hundreds of extras. Chazelle wanted a really high angle on the party, but they couldn't fit a crane into the space, so Linus rigged a cable cam corner to corner from above to capture the action. They spent a long time blocking and rehearsing the party sequence, filming the overhead shots, then shot with a Steadicam through the party the second day. Babylon is about the early days of cinema, when the silent movie era is transitioning to sound. The crew had to show the process of shooting film in the first days of “talkies” and the filmmaking equipment of the time had to be historically accurate. Though Linus didn't use vintage film cameras on the movie, the production designer found film cameras to use as props and they were able to use old arclights that were fitted with HMIs so they actually worked on set. Find Linus Sandgren: Instagram @linussandgren_dp Babylon can be seen in theaters nationwide. Today we're joined by Jeremy Wells, who is the Managing Partner at Longitude°, a branding group that has helped companies like 21c Museum Hotels, SALT Hotels, and Real Hospitality Group showcase their unique approach to hospitality. I asked him why it seems so many hotels try to offer hospitality like the iconic Ace Hotel did (and does) - but so many miss the mark. While they have cool design and furniture, their lobbies sit empty and the vibe is off. Listen to today's episode to hear how we can move beyond a cookie-cutter approach and provide hospitality in a fresh way.

Natives of Memphis, Andy and Michael began cooking as children. Their extended Italian families would gather for jovial Sunday suppers, where everyone would help make homemade meatballs and ravioli. When Andy and Michael met at Christian Brothers High School, they immediately connected over their similar ancestral backstories. After graduating from the University of Mississippi and Auburn University, respectively, Andy and Michael attended Johnson and Wales University in Charleston, SC and the Italian Institute for Advanced Culinary Studies in Calabria, Italy. Both Andy's and MIchael's first formative kitchen experience was working under Chef Jose Gutierrez at Chez Philippe in Memphis. In 2008, Andy and Michael opened Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen, which led to their first James Beard Foundation nomination. The duo followed their debut with Hog & Hominy, a wood-burning neighborhood restaurant that was recognized by Bon Appetit, GQ and Southern Living as one of the top new restaurants in the country in 2013. That year Food and Wine also selected them as Best New Chefs in the country, their cookbook Collards & Carbonara: Southern Cooking, Italian Roots was published and they were recognized as semifinalists for Best Chef Southeast by the James Beard Foundation. Two years later, Porcellio's Craft Butcher highlighted their love of traditional butcheries and heritage meats. The 2016 opening of Josephine Estelle in the Ace Hotel in New Orleans, LA, was their first foray into a hotel space. Catherine & Mary's a nod to their Italian grandmothers opened in 2016 as well. Gray Canary, located in Old Dominick Distillery in the South Main Arts District in downtown Memphis soon followed as their sixth concept. For their seventh restaurant, Bishop, Andy and Michael dug into their French cooking foundation that began right out of culinary school. Housed in the historic Central Station Hotel, this latest concept continues as the third in their stable of downtown restaurant locations and continues to underscore the renowned chefs' company culture of family and friends. They started the Andrew Michael Foundation in 2021 to help organize how the company can give back to our community.
