A belief there's hope to solving New Zealand's plastic waste problem. Plastics New Zealand has released two reports with strategies for minimising plastic waste in the construction sector and in consumer, medical and seafood packaging. Five thousand tonnes of polystyrene packaging enters the supply chain every year, with 77% going to landfill. Plastics New Zealand CEO Rachel Barker told Ryan Bridge there's work to be done. She says New Zealand could implement product stewardship, so people have a place they can take it back to —or it gets collected— so it can be recycled and re-used into new products. Rachel Barker is the founder of Weather or Not Equestrian, a brand dedicated to helping riders stay clean and dry in all conditions. As a lifelong equestrian, Rachel is turning her riding experience into a business and stating "I want to give back to the equestrian community that has given me so much over the years. We don't always love riding in the rain but we need the rain for the flowers to grow. I hope Weather Or Not Equestrian can help people on those rainy days and to be able to see the beauty that comes from them." Listen in!
Despite government efforts to reduce single use plastics, we are producing record amounts of plastic waste worldwide. In 2021, we produced 139 million metric tons, 6 million metric tons more than 2019. You may find it hard to get a plastic straw and we all use reusable bags at the supermarket, but some are suggesting efforts are futile without everyone getting on board. Plastics NZ CEO Rachel Barker joined Mike Hosking. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
So many things are made from plastic these days, and while plastics are cheap and can make life convenient, they have been getting some pretty bad publicity recently as we come to terms not only with how they are made, but what happens to them afterwards. Luckily we are living in a world where recycling bins are easy to find, and many of us now consciously wash and sort our plastic waste, but where does it go from here and how much of this plastic actually gets recycled? Today, Michelle is joined by Rachel Barker, CEO of Plastics NZ, and Damien Venuto, host of The Front Page and a new dad, to discuss the realities of recycling plastics in New Zealand. Read more on the subject here. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
New records are being set for the amount of plastic being intercepted, and avoiding landfills. It's down to more local councils expanding the types of plastic they collect, and recycle. Polypropylene is now taken by nearly nine out of ten councils - that's the likes of ice cream and margarine containers. Plastics NZ CEO, Rachel Barker says 97 percent of Kiwis can now recycle the plastic, up from 81 percent last year. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
