SHOW NOTES: •There was once a Readers Digest staple by this name, still available in summaries. •Here's mine. Keep in mind, when you critique someone who happens to be black, it's 'de rigueur' to announce, "I'm not a racist." Well, I'm announcing to you that I'm not a Trump supporter (and I'm also not a racist). •Years ago we thought about selling our home. Every realtor who showed me "comparable's" I turned away, because there was no comparable's to this home. It's a lifestyle, not a house. You judge it on that basis, not the neighbors. •People outside the US, especially in Europe, think that the US is simply like a European country, but much larger. (A client of mine in the EU, to whom I mentioned that Lichtenstein was the only European country I haven't visited, said, "Lichtenstein is in Europe?") •Trump is targeting some areas that need improvement, but where he should be using a scalpel he's using a flamethrower. •We cannot allow unregulated, illegal immigrants into the US. (Does an "undocumented immigrant" make a rioter an "undocumented shopper?") We cannot accommodate Latin America on our welfare system. •Dismantling the hundreds of millions of dollars, hundreds of thousands of organizations, and tens of thousands of people from the divisive DEI is productive. •Punishing—providing consequences—for universities which tolerate and even foster anti-Semitism and harm to Jewish students is an important consequence. "Hitler should have finished the job" is repugnant in moronic. •Taking the graft and waste out of social security and Medicare isn't ending it, it's saving money. (Do you know that billions were lost through corruption and criminality during Covid PPP payouts?) •It's interesting that when the US pulls out of an international aid group, the group usually has to close down, because no one else is supporting it sufficiently or intends to take over for us. •It's pretty clear a great many people seem to hate us in the US, and want us to fail, and enjoy using profanity hiding behind the internet to question our intelligence and wish us all the worst. •That's because they're envious of our freedoms, economy, and opportunities. It is self-hate directed outward. No country that declared neutrality in WWII should have any citizens voicing any critique of any country that fought they tyranny and oppression that threatened and killed so many. •There are no "comparable's" to the US, anywhere. If you want us to fail, give it your best shot, but you're on the wrong side of history and the future. •And some day, sooner or later, you're going to come around looking for our help again. You always do.

TRADITION's subscribers have already received our special Spring 2025 issue, containing content commemorating R. Aharon Lichtenstein zt”l, timed with his 10th yahrzeit marked this month. Five years ago we were pleased to publish Rabbanit Tonya Mittelman's essay, “Women in the Torah World in the Thought of Rabbi Lichtenstein” (Summer 2020). Toni, a distinguished educator, is a daughter of R. Lichtenstein. In this episode of our podcast, Mali Brofsky talks with Mittelman, who shares insights from her father’s career, as well as her own experiences as an educator, regarding women’s participation in high-level Jewish learning and religious practice. She emphasizes that her father's endorsement of women's learning was rooted in his deep trust in both Torah and in women, explaining that he believed women and men have similar spiritual needs in this regard. The conversation explores the challenges and opportunities in providing comprehensive Jewish education for women, as well as their practice of mitzvot, with Toni emphasizing that her biggest challenge as an educator is transforming her students from passive to active participants in halakhic education and practice. Regarding religious practice, Mittelman notes that women should maximize participation wherever possible. On the question of the frustration often experienced by women in these areas, she asserts that there remains a difference between men and women in some religious contexts, that this reality should be openly discussed, and that women should trust the system, pointing out that these challenges are part of a broader set of life demands experienced by men and women alike. The discussion concludes by encouraging further progress in women’s religious participation while acknowledging the ongoing tensions within the traditional religious framework. Watch a video recording of the conversation. Tonya Mittelman is the Principal of Ulpanat Tzvia Sdot Negev. Mali Brofsky, a member of TRADITION's editorial board, is a senior faculty member at MMY and a social worker in private practice. The post R. Lichtenstein on Women's Torah Study first appeared on Tradition Online.

This episode of the Tradition Podcast is being released on Rosh Hodesh Iyar, the tenth yahrzeit of Rav Aharon Lichtenstein zt”l. In eulogizing his father-in-law, Rabbi Soloveitchik, R. Lichtenstein observed that the Rav was a “sui generis sage—he bestrode American Orthodoxy like a colossus, transcending many of its internal fissures.” Such could be said about R. Lichtenstein himself, expanding the width of the colossus' stance to include religious life in Israel as well, where he made his home as Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion for over 40 years. TRADITION's recently released Spring 2025 contains a section of essays exploring R. Lichtenstein's teachings and thought – and is a complement to our special enlarged winter 2014 issue dedicated to R. Lichtenstein as well (a volume planned as a tribute but whose timing very shortly before his passing meant it was received by our readers as a memorial volume). That issue, guest edited by Yitzchak Blau, Alan Jotkowitz, and Reuven Ziegler, is available in our open-access archives. Now, a decade later, we bring you a never-before published essay by R. Lichtenstein, “Relevance and Reverence” (open access), exploring some of the challenges in Jewish education at the time he first delivered the ideas as a talk in 1984 – and analyzed by Michael S. Berger, Dean of Yeshiva University's Azrieli Graduate School of Education, who writes on the ongoing relevance of “Relevance and Reverence.” In this episode, we talk with Berger about the topics raised in the two essays. Later in the episode we hear from Shlomo Zuckier about his contribution to the volume, revisiting R. Lichtenstein's classic essay, “Does Jewish Tradition Recognize an Ethic Independent of Halakha?” Zuckier, a research associate at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and consulting editor at TRADITION, penned an impressive and sweeping survey of the impact and reception of “Ethic Independent,” which originally appeared 50 years ago. Watch a video version of the recording. Subscribers can access all the content in this new issue at TraditionOnline.org or enjoy the print copy which should be arriving in post boxes in the coming days. In our open-access archives you can find all of R. Lichtenstein's many contributions to TRADITION over the years. The post Rav Lichtenstein's Legacy first appeared on Tradition Online.

Judaism does not value power and might, Rav Mosheh Lichtenstein says—in fact, it abhors it.Co-rosh yeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion, Rav Mosheh is a venerated leader in Israel's Religious Zionist world who is unafraid to call out his community's shortfalls. His statements on Israel's religious-political affairs draw ire and praise—a fact-of-life that does not discourage him.Rav Mosheh has been a raam in yeshiva since 1992, and teaches on an array of subjects within Talmud and Jewish thought in Gush Etzion. He is also the eldest son of Rav Aharon Lichtenstein. Now, he joins us to answer 18 questions on Israel, including Religious Zionism, moral failures, and US President Donald Trump. This interview was held on March 11.

Is Bill Clinton responsible for this Trump Era? In this episode, Dr. Nelson Lichtenstein, professor of History at UC Santa Barbara, and co-author of the book A Fabulous Failure: The Clinton Presidency and the Transformation of American Capitalism joins the pod to examine the complexities of Bill Clinton's presidency and its enduring effects on American democracy today. We discuss how Clinton's embrace of neoliberalism, exemplified through policies like welfare reform and NAFTA, caused rifts within the Democratic Party and set the stage for right-wing populism. As we dig into the consequences of prioritizing political pragmatism and bipartisanship over progressive ideals, we ask: did Clinton's era create an environment ripe for the rise of figures like Donald Trump?Dr. Lichtenstein highlights political dynamics during the 1990s, the importance of maintaining a strong, progressive base, and lessons that contemporary Democrats can apply as they navigate today's political landscape, while encouraging reflection on labor's role, coalition-building among progressives, and strategies for re-engaging disillusioned voters. -------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock

"It's the economy, stupid" - Clinton advisor James Carville, 1992.Bill Clinton left office with a 66% approval rating. This was in large part because 81% of Americans approved his handling of the economy - 71% said the 1999 was the best economy of their lifetimes (according to Gallup). But how much credit does a president really deserve for an economy? And how does Clinton's record on free trade, welfare reform, and deregulation hold up today?

TRADITION and the Rabbinical Council of America recently hosted R. Mosheh Lichtenstein, Rosh Yeshivat Har Etzion, for a conversation revisiting a classic essay from our archives: R. Aharon Lichtenstein zt”l, “The Ideology of Hesder” (TRADITION, Fall 1981), using it as a lens to explore contemporary issues in Israeli religious and civilian life and society and the particular challenges of the current war. Introduction: R. Menachem Penner, Executive Vice-President, RCA Moderator: R. Jeffrey Saks, Editor, TRADITION Together we considered the complex relationship between yeshiva study and army service embodied by the Hesder movement; how the 40 years since the original essay's publication may have strengthened or weakened its message; what is the ideal role for Religious Zionism to play in Israel's contentious present moment and how we have grown simultaneously closer and further from those on our left and it right; how do we assess trends on the scene such as the rise of the Mekhinot, and the ongoing and current strife surrounding the Haredi military exemption and draft. R. Lichtenstein spoke candidly and personally about the traumas of this year, and the sacrifice of the lives of numerous precious students. Watch a video recording of the event.

, is a man living many lives, who is good with numbers and likes to talk. At 15, he entered the banking industry as an apprentice in his home country of Lichtenstein, where he was introduced to the world of work while completing his secondary education. Like many young people who completed apprenticeships and opted not to go to university immediately, Roman went abroad to improve his language skills. Unlike most of his friends who went to English-speaking countries, he went to France to study French for four months and returned to Lichtenstein to work in banking in Lausanne, the French-speaking part of Switzerland. (For those of us in the US, this would be comparable to living in New Jersey and working in New York… well, sort of, kind of!) Over the next several years, Roman worked in banking elevating his roles into the global markets and relocating to Hong Kong and Singapore. His travels also took him to New Haven, CT, Vancouver, Canada, and Nicaragua for different purposes, but you will need to listen to our interview to learn more about that part of his adventures. Roman has carved distinct paths wherever he has gone in his career, and the arenas he has worked in are pretty varied. Yet he has navigated his journey with an internal compass that many of us might not be able to comprehend. Along the way, he earned a university degree, took Seth Godin's alt-MBA program, and attended a five-day fool's workshop that was a personally and professionally transformative experience. After working in several large global banking institutions, Roman explored various other avenues, including the hemp business, bread baking, coffee farming, coffee and pastry service, oat milk business, agriculture, and many more entrepreneurial ventures. His takeaway message points to the importance of relationships, curiosity, and adaptability. Roman's story is a testament to the value of continuous learning and the impact of personal relationships on professional fulfillment. In this week's learn more about Roman's journey: Roman involved his whole family, including his children, in his decision to transition from a more traditional career path to his entrepreneurial pursuits. He has co-produced a traveling exhibition on discrimination throughout Lichtenstein. More than a thousand schoolchildren have attended the program. Learn more and connect with Roman here:
Join Brett Johnson on this wild ride of government cover-ups and conspiracies as he sets the record straight once and for all. The Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange was hacked in August 2016. 119,756 bitcoin, worth about US$72 million at the time, was stolen. Ilya Lichtenstein, 35, and Heather Morgan, 33, were arrested in February 2022 after the government seized approximately 95,000 of those stolen bitcoin from cryptocurrency wallets in the defendants' control. They were arrested for laundering the money, not the hack. So WHO did the hack? And why are the Lichtensteins NOW in witness protection? ► The Brett Johnson Show: https://www.youtube.com/@brettjohnsonshow► Criminal Thoughts Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/criminalthoughtspodcast ► Criminal Thoughts Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554340715365 ► Brett's Twitter: https://twitter.com/gollumfun Follow more of Brett: https://www.thebrettjohnsonshow.com Watch Brett Johnson on the Lex Friedman Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC1LFC0KFSw&t=3s Watch Brett Johnson on the Jordan B Peterson Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cz0GVLzzYlg ABOUT BRETT Brett Johnson. Former U.S. Most Wanted Cybercriminal. Now Good Guy. The United States Secret Service called Mr. Johnson "The Original Internet Godfather" for his role in refining modern financial cybercrime. Or to put it another way: Brett was convicted of 39 felonies, placed on the U.S. Most Wanted List, escaped from prison, and… he built the first organized cybercrime community, Shadowcrew was a precursor to today's darknet and darknet markets, and it laid the foundation for the way modern cybercrime channels operate today. Johnson was sentenced to 90 months in Federal Prison. End of story? Not hardly. Brett found redemption through his sister, his wife Michele, and finally the FBI. He was given the chance to turn his life around. He took it. Today, Brett is considered one of the leading authorities on cybercrime, identity theft, and cybersecurity on the planet. He works hard to protect businesses and consumers from the type of person he used to be.
