This is my second conversation with Rachel Eddy, since I forgot to record the first one! We talk about finding flow in fiddling, learning tunes off recordings (or not), remembering tunes, singing, some great stories about Rachel's dad and his fiddle journey, and some ideas for fiddle students to help relax and get balanced while playing. Rachel Eddy (they/them) hails from West Virginia, where they grew up steeped in Appalachian music and dance. Rachel's multi-instrumental talents and soulful singing bring a powerful energy to the stage. In addition to being a performer, Rachel is passionate about teaching. They have taught fiddle, banjo and guitar at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins WV, at Sore Fingers Summer school in the UK, and different various weekend workshops from the hills of West Virginia to Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, London and Wales.Contact Rachel at reddytojam@gmail.comRachel's website is https://www.racheleddymusic.com/The tune this week is Rose in the Mountain, played live by Rachel on the podcast!Email me at meganbeller@fiddlestudio.com.Listen and subscribe on Apple Music, Spotify, or Buzzsprout. On Saturday, Helicon and a host of other traditional artists will present their 37th annual Winter Solstice Concerts at Goucher College's Kraushaar Auditorium, with shows at 3:30 and 7:30pm. For many of the past 37 years, the musicians have been appearing here on WYPR the day before those performances with a special musical preview. Helicon, an acoustic trio formed in 1987 by guitarist Robin Bullock, flutist Chris Norman and master hammer dulcimer player Ken Kolodner, will be joined tomorrow by members of the Ken and Brad Kolodner Quartet, which also includes Alex Lacquement and Rachel Eddy, with special returning musician, Scottish National Fiddle Champion Elke Baker. And Charm City Junction bandleader Brad Kolodner will be joined by Alex Lacquement, Sean McComiskey and Elke Baker. The Mountain Valley Pipeline, or MVP is planned to be a 300 + mile pipeline 42 inches in diameter being built to transport compressed so-called Natural Gas from the Marcellus formation in the Appalachian Basin, from northern West Virginia to southern Virginia for export. The pipeline started being built in 2018 and is slated to cross over 1,000 waterways, posing a danger to countless human and non-human animals and plants along the way as well as being responsible for 19 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to 19 million passenger cars or 23 average U.S. coal fired power plants each year. It's being built by a number of corporations involved in other fossil fuel infrastructure like ConEd & EQT. As of November 2020, the project was 3 years behind schedule and over $3 billion over budget because of a coalition of on-the-ground grassroots direct action and resistance, geographically dispersed solidarity actions and court challenges determined to keep this Marcellus Shale gas in the ground. This week, we'll speak with Toby and Emily, two longtime activists resisting the MVP's construction about the pipeline, some of the resistance history, MVP's attempt in federal court to intimidate and identify folks who run the social media accounts called “Appalachians Against Pipelines” and how to get involved in the struggle to fight climate change. This week, award winning Baltimore, Maryland Old-time and progressive Bluegrass sensation The Ken & Brad Kolodner Quartet recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas. Also, interviews with this musical father and son. “The dynamic father-son team Ken & Brad Kolodner weave together a captivating soundscape on hammered dulcimer and clawhammer banjo blurring the lines of Old-Time, Bluegrass and American Roots music. Regarded as one of the most influential hammered dulcimer players in North America, Baltimore’s Ken Kolodner has joined forces with his son Brad Kolodner, a renowned clawhammer banjo player. They've sculpted their own brand of driving, innovative, tasteful acoustic roots music with a ‘creative curiosity that lets all listeners know that a passion for traditional music yet thrives in every generation.’ The hypnotizing groove of the percussive hammered dulcimer and rhythmic clawhammer banjo is the core of their sound. They are joined by bassist Alex Lacquement who locks everything together with his commanding presence and the dynamic multi-instrumentalist Rachel Eddy on fiddle and guitar. The quartet won 1st place in the Neo-Traditional Band Contest at the Appalachian Stringband Festival in the summer of 2019. They released their fourth studio album "Stony Run" in March 2020.” https://www.kenandbrad.com/about.html In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1978 archival recording of Ozark originals Bob & Kay Blair performing the traditional song “Mary of the Wild Moor,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Author, folklorist and songwriter Charley Sandage presents an historical portrait of the people, events and indomitable spirit of Ozark culture that resulted in the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and its enduring legacy of music and craft. In this episode, Charley discusses the literal and philosophical dilemmas posed by low water bridges for people who depend on them to get home.

Today, Helicon, the renowned traditional music trio, joins us live in Studio A. Tomorrow, they continue a great Baltimore holiday tradition with their 34nd annual Winter Solstice Concerts at Goucher College’s Kraushaar Auditorium. Helicon will be joined on Saturday by Charm City Junction, the Ken and Brad Kolodner Quartet, and other traditional music performers, as well as the North American Step Dance champion, Jonathan Srour. Today, we’re sustaining a tradition of our own here on Midday. For many years, Helicon and the other band members have treated us to a preview of their Winter Solstice concert, right here in Studio A. Here's who's with us today: Helicon’s Chris Norman plays wooden flutes and small bagpipes, and he sings; Robin Bullock plays guitar, cittern, and mandolin, and Ken Kolodner plays hammered dulcimer and fiddle. Also here from Charm City Junction: Alex Lacquement, on upright bass and vocals; Sean McComiskey on the button accordion; and Patrick McAvinue, who was the International Bluegrass Music Association's 2017 Fiddler of the Year. The great old-time fiddler and vocalist Rachel Eddy is also with us today. Ken's son and CCJ bandmember Brad Kolodner was unable to join us today. But they’ll all be performing at the two Winter Solstice concerts tomorrow, at 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm. The 3:30 performance is sold out, but tickets are still available for the 7:30pm concert. Click here for more information. For directions to Goucher College, click here. We live-streamed our program today, and you can enjoy the video at WYPR's Facebook page.
