I'm digging into my LP collection for some of today's selections – Emerson & Waldron, great band from the late-1960's/early 1970's, and the Johnson Mountain Boys, classic bluegrass from the 1980's. Of course we've got some fine offerings from Rhonda Vincent, the Brombies, Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands, and the Stanley Brothers. Throw in some picking from Brad Kolodner, the HCBB and Eddie Adcock & Don Reno, and you've got a memorable bluegrass concert.
Check out this episode where we talk the importance of clean water with John Bolten of the band Geraldine they get ready to serve as the houseband for the Annapolis Baygrass festival kicking off THISWEEKEND September 21-22, 2024. We take a deep dive (pun intended)into comparingpunk rock and old time music and saying a lot with a little. Geraldine's mantra is ‘Good Time Old Time'. They are a country-leaning string band bringingsongwriting to the forefront, while blending elements of old time, American folk, bluegrass, and alternative country in a distinctive, enthusiastic sound. As stewards of Appalachian motifs in a modern framework, they bring banjo, mandolin, guitar, fiddle, and Appalachian flat foot dancing to the front of the stage, accented with lush four-part harmonies, in a free-wheeling repertoire of both rare and wonderful gems from the past and original songs. " The perfect blend of grit, drive, originality, and fun – Baltimore's Geraldine embodies all that's good in a modern stringband. In studio and on-stage, the quartet dips and dives through raucous fiddle tunes and soulful songs to create a fresh sonic landscape that knows no bounds. Anchored by John Bolten's creative songwriting, the spotlight is shared evenly across their dynamic lineup featuring Jonathan Vocke on banjo, Josh Anderson on fiddle, and Jocelyn Haversat on feet and upright bass. In a modern roots music landscape that can be overly polished and predictable, Geraldine is as genuine as it gets and you'll never quite know where they're going next.” -- Brad Kolodner, Folk Alley, Bluegrass Country Radio Check the band out here: Website: Geraldineband.com IG: thegeraldineband FB: Geraldine YouTube: @geraldineband And check out the festival here: baygrass.festival.com

For St. Patrick's Day we love to listen to Irish/Celtic music all day so if it's in a podcast, we'll add that for our listening pleasure. And we ALWAYS have corned beef dinner!" Darin Wallace of the Stout Pounders wrote: "For St. Patrick's Day I am celebrating by playing music all day in pubs in Seattle, WA with my band Stout Pounders. We would love it if you featured one of our upbeat newer tracks from our Pour Decisions album. :) Enjoy the big day and happy birthday in advance!! " Gordon Webb replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "While listening I relax back in a recliner with my feet up. For your St. Patrics show, the more the better. Thanks for all of your years of shows." Catherine Koehler replied the Celtic Music Magazine: "I know I only need to answer one of the questions but I'm an overachiever so I will do all three. What I always do while listening is something school related - I'm either grading papers or looking up or creating new assignments. I used to be quite low on St. Pat's but I have finally realized that there are many ways to be happy on this day of Irish celebration. I live in a very "unusual" area that has no Irish culture at all. I am a Celtic performer who must travel quite a distance in order to perform at festivals and events but that is impossible during the week since I work a regular job. I used to be sad to see all of my friends on Facebook singing and playing all week long! I wanted so much to be with them and enjoying the festivities. Then I realized that I was blessed to spend that time with my family...making an authentic Irish meal (NOT cornbeef and cabbage) and listening to those same friends on a mountain of CD's. There are, of course, Irish libations involved. : - ) Now I look forward to the day as it was originally meant to be; a chance to share our faith and our heritage with others."

Tom Morley emailed around St Patrick's Day: "Marc, Our Chattanooga - based band Stringer's Ridge played a concert on St. Patrick's Day at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. (I am there on the faculty at the famous folk arts school usually once a year teaching beginning or intermediate Irish Fiddle.) We had a wonderful crowd and it was a great way to spend the best Irish day of the year! I am enclosing several photos of us at the historic Keith House where we put on the concert. (Tom Morley - fiddle, Fran Morley - bodhran, Bryant Haynes - guitar) Thanks for all you do to promote Irish trad music!" STRINGER'S RIDGE Marilyn S. Hansen sent a photo about Easter Rising Band: "14 seminarians got together years ago in St. Louis and developed an Irish band. Most of them are married now. They play at each other's weddings, but they also have regular gigs. The interesting part is how their kids take part… This is last year‘s celebration. I was out of town this year celebrating my sister's birthday the day before St. Patrick's Day. Thought I'd send you last year's photo. I'll send you a few that they've sent to me for this year. EASTER RISING BAND Pete Watson emailed St Pat's photos: "Hi Marc, The Bookends had a fabulous time playing a number of shows throughout Ontario around St. Patrick's Day.Attached is a photo of Miriam (left) and Cait (right) on St. Paddy's Day for our gig at The Rec Room, Toronto, with our regular special guest bodhrán player extraordinaire, Romano Di Nillo.Romano is just back from 4+ years with Come From Away on Broadway and we were so glad to have him with us for these shows. The venue was handing out some "paddywhackery" to attendees and these 3 couldn't resist putting some on!" THE BOOKENDS-PETE WATSON Bruce Cummings, a Piper emailed a photo: "Hey Marc!Just to say how much I enjoy listening to the Celtic music you provide. You asked for pictures from St. Patrick's Day 2023, so here's a couple. I am part of the Lane Fire Brigade Pipes and Drums in Eugene Ore. We had a great weekend piping in the area.Keep up the good work!" BRUCE CUMMINGS PIPER Jim O'Connor of Boston Blackthorne emailed a photo: "Hi Marc -hope you had a fabulous holiday! Boston Blackthorne played 3 nights in Western MA, centered around St Patrick's Day as well as the big parade (the nation's oldest) in Holyoke MA.We played to crowded enthusiastic fans in Northampton MA and Holyoke MA.But perhaps the best gig (and story) was the one that arose spontaneously back in the lobby of our hotel after our St Pat's evening show. The hotel lobby is most frequently empty but this night is was crowded with about 100 boisterous folks from Minnesota, visiting Massachusetts to support a Women's college Hockey team. We were approached by the unofficial spokesperson who pointed at our guitar and fiddle and asked, “Can you really play those?” I answered of course we can, and this is your lucky night! Not only has your party been invaded by musicians, we are an Irish band and this is St Patrick's Day! We proceeded to unpack our instruments and did a set of singalongs like Charlie on the MTA for the Boston connection.Halfway through the set our wives came into the lobby -my wife grumbled to Pete's wife, “This party is going to keep us up all night!”Pete's wife Maureen looked a little closer and exclaimed, “Hey that's Jim and Pete in the center of it all!”They joined the fray, we had the best gig of the year playing for this group of strangers from the Midwest, wonderful folks who doubtless went home with a great tale and the definition of the work “Craic!” JIM OCONNOR

On 88.1, WYPR, broadcasting and streaming live from the performance studio of our sister station, WTMD in Towson, it's the annual Midday Holiday Concert with Helicon and Friends. On Saturday, Helicon and a host of other traditional artists will present their 37th annual Winter Solstice Concerts at Goucher College's Kraushaar Auditorium, with shows at 3:30 and 7:30pm. For many of the past 37 years, the musicians have been appearing here on WYPR the day before those performances with a special musical preview. Helicon, an acoustic trio formed in 1987 by guitarist Robin Bullock, flutist Chris Norman and master hammer dulcimer player Ken Kolodner, will be joined tomorrow by members of the Ken and Brad Kolodner Quartet, which also includes Alex Lacquement and Rachel Eddy, with special returning musician, Scottish National Fiddle Champion Elke Baker. And Charm City Junction bandleader Brad Kolodner will be joined by Alex Lacquement, Sean McComiskey and Elke Baker. The Winter Solstice Concerts will also feature six-time North American Step-Dance Champion Jonathon Srour and step-dancer Katie Ortel. Many, if not quite all, of those folks join host Tom Hall this afternoon here at WYPR's sister station, WTMD. In addition to today's live radio broadcast and our audio livestream at the WYPR home page, we also streamed live video of today's Holiday Concert on the WYPR YouTube page, so you can check us out there, too. This edition will help to allay your anxieties as we feature some younger players choosing the path less taken - traditional music. We'll hear from Sarah Morgan, Brad Kolodner, Jake Blount, Max Allard, The Piros, The Onlies and others. We'll also offer a review of Hurricane Clarice, the CD from Allison De Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves, and play three tunes. Spring can be fickle here in eastern Pennsylvania, hinting at change just long enough for the crocus and daffodils to start to bloom only to be surprised by a period of cold weather and often a bit of snow. This week we celebrate the vernal equinox with some music that suggests those changes. Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donateOnce Baltimore claw-hammer banjoist, radio host and community organizer Brad Kolodner got a banjo in his hands, it was game over. Brad had previously played the cello in the school orchestra and had held a strong interest in sports, but his true passion for old time was realized at Meadowlark Music camp in Maine. He signed up for the banjo for beginners class after his father (the renowned fiddle and hammer dulcimer player Ken Kolodner) brought him along to the camp under the condition that he was to play some kind of music that week. While Brad had grown up around traditional music through his father's performances with his band Helicon, dad's recordings and music lessons at the house, he wasn't drawn to that particular style of music. Once he started on the banjo, however, he began going down YouTube rabbit holes, going out to jams and soaking in as much as he could. Brad went to school in Ithaca, NY, where he started hosting a folk radio show that further deepened his love of old time. Once he returned home to Baltimore, he became invested in community organizing with weekly jams and music festivals.Brad's released albums with his band Charm City Junction, as Ken & Brad Kolodner and recently, he's put out his debut solo record, Chimney Swifts. The album focuses on what he calls “private music.” This is what musicians play when they first pick up their instruments, it's familiar and evokes time and place. In our conversation, he goes into detail about what that means and how the pandemic has impacted his practice of "private music." He also talks about his most recent project The Birds' Flight with Pete Sutherland and Timothy Cummings. Pete and Tim were working on Scottish songs and then decided to bring Brad in since he has an affinity towards genre-mixing and is a kick-ass banjo player. As a DJ, you can hear Brad on Folk Alley, Radio Bristol for the Old Time Jam and on Bluegrass Country Radio, you can find him playing at the Baltimore Old Time Jam, Baltimore Square Dance, Baltimore Old-Time Music Festival. And you can find him online teaching banjo and making everyone feel comfortable at the slow jam. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

This week, award winning Baltimore, Maryland Old-time and progressive Bluegrass sensation The Ken & Brad Kolodner Quartet recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas. Also, interviews with this musical father and son. “The dynamic father-son team Ken & Brad Kolodner weave together a captivating soundscape on hammered dulcimer and clawhammer banjo blurring the lines of Old-Time, Bluegrass and American Roots music. Regarded as one of the most influential hammered dulcimer players in North America, Baltimore’s Ken Kolodner has joined forces with his son Brad Kolodner, a renowned clawhammer banjo player. They've sculpted their own brand of driving, innovative, tasteful acoustic roots music with a ‘creative curiosity that lets all listeners know that a passion for traditional music yet thrives in every generation.’ The hypnotizing groove of the percussive hammered dulcimer and rhythmic clawhammer banjo is the core of their sound. They are joined by bassist Alex Lacquement who locks everything together with his commanding presence and the dynamic multi-instrumentalist Rachel Eddy on fiddle and guitar. The quartet won 1st place in the Neo-Traditional Band Contest at the Appalachian Stringband Festival in the summer of 2019. They released their fourth studio album "Stony Run" in March 2020.” https://www.kenandbrad.com/about.html In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1978 archival recording of Ozark originals Bob & Kay Blair performing the traditional song “Mary of the Wild Moor,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Author, folklorist and songwriter Charley Sandage presents an historical portrait of the people, events and indomitable spirit of Ozark culture that resulted in the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and its enduring legacy of music and craft. In this episode, Charley discusses the literal and philosophical dilemmas posed by low water bridges for people who depend on them to get home.

This week, Baltimore based Old Time string and Irish button accordion band Charm City Junction recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with these masterful Maryland musicians. “From dance inducing Old Time rhythms and foot stomping Irish melodies to hard-driving Bluegrass, Baltimore-based acoustic roots quartet Charm City Junction creates a fresh soundscape that keeps listeners on the edge of their seats wondering where they'll go next. Formed in 2014, Charm City Junction has taken the acoustic music scene by storm performing around the country gaining high praise along the way for their high-energy, captivating and dynamic performances. Bobby Britt takes charge with his virtuosic, powerful and musical approach to the fiddle. Clawhammer banjo wizard Brad Kolodner adds his playful, driving, melodic and groovy Old-Time touch. Sean McComiskey soars through the tunes and fills the gaps with his soulful button accordion playing. The versatile bassist Alex Lacquement drives the train, locking everything together with his commanding and tasteful choices.” https://www.charmcityjunction.com/about.html In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1976 archival recording of Ozark original Charley Sandage performing the traditional tune “Blacksmith of Brandywine,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Now, time for some Old Time Music...that's the name for a family of traditional Appalachian folk music styles that will be featured at a brand new festival this weekend. The father-and-son musical duo, Ken and Brad Kolodner, have organized the first-ever Baltimore Old Time Music Festival this weekend at the Creative Alliance in East Baltimore. Starting tonight and running through tomorrow night, there will be performances by dozens of musicians from near and far, a variety of workshops and even a square dance to celebrate the roots and old-time music scene here in Baltimore. In addition to the Kolodners, musical acts include the Corn Potato String Band, Molsky’s Mountain Drifters, and the two musical guests who join us now in Studio A. Linda Jean Stokley and Montana Hobbs comprise the duo called The Local Honeys. They’re from Kentucky, and they specialize in the unique string and vocal harmonies of Appalachian folk music, playing both traditional and original songs. Today in Studio A, the duo play three originals: ----The Cigarette Trees,---- a song Linda Jean wrote about Kentucky's strip mining operations; ----The Beattyville Bomber,---- a song by Montana about some of the folks in her hometown; and a folk tune they learned from songwriter Shirley Collins called ----Space Girl.----We livestreamed The LocalHoney's performance today on WYPR's Facebook page. Watch it here.

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is Brad Kolodner! Brad was my guest for episode one, and this is episode 101, and I feel very sentimental about that. I love having guests return on the show, because we get past the basic “how did you get in to old time” question and into the good stuff! Part One in the "Baltimore Boys" series, wherein I jam with the friends (and tenants) of Brad Kolodner. We discuss growing up in the household of hammered-dulcimer titan, Ken Kolodner, and play some of their best modern takes on traditional tunes. This episode features three clawhammer banjo duets, which you don't hear everyday (hopefully). There's an exciting tension to these recordings; lining up bum-diddies (the basic clawhammer stroke) is no easy task. But I think we made something special, and I hope you agree. Also, I found out Brad's a straight-up DJ! Dude's pro in an interview; I've got a lot to learn. Recorded at Brad's Place in 2016
