It's an annoying thing to have to write down, because in my head it felt like it was only yesterday, but it's been 10 years since I finished university, packed a big rucksack, and went to go and see the world. Lots of people had gap years. We all knew that there were only two essential items that you needed. Some rehydration tablets and a Lonely Planet guide. This week, I was joined on the Country Life Podcast by Tom Hall the head of Lonely Planet UK, to drill down into what makes Lonely Planet guides so essential for the modern traveller, plus a nice chat about the 2025 Best in Travel Awards.Listen to Country Life podcast on Apple PodcastsListen to Country Life podcast on SpotifyListen to Country Life podcast on AudibleSo naturally that began with a discussion about Tom looking for the Ark of The Covenant in Ethiopia, why Belize is a must-visit destination in 2025 and the joys of high-speed rail in Uzbekistan. Naturally. We talked a lot about responsible tourism, what it really means and how to do it, and why Mozambique is a bucket-list destination for Tom. We also got into the nitty gritty of how a guide is put together, what's important and what isn't, and why East Anglia is the 8th best destination to travel to in 2025. Nobody was more surprised than me, someone who grew up in Suffolk, but the answer is very compelling. The skies are grey and it doesn't seem to be getting any warmer any time soon. So tune in and start plotting your next getaway.Episode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Tom HallEditor and Producer: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via Pixabay Hosted on Acast. My guest this week is filmmaker and cinematographer Hope Hall who has built a career that includes assuming the role as Principal Presidential Videographer to President Obama, a position that she considered was the best job in the world. Her journey however started a long way from the White House in a different world as a modern dancer. Hope was born in 1969 in Chicago to Tom Hall, a retired Navy officer and advertising account executive, and Betsy Hall, a secretary. She is the youngest of three children and has three more siblings from her father's second marriage. Her mother navigates lifelong severe mental illness and Hope asked for her siblings and her to move in with her father and step mother, after living in Mexico and Brazil and her parents' divorce. She then lived with her new family in Chicago, California and Connecticut. Music has always played a role in Hope's life; she plays the piano, guitar, and now the drums, as well as being a singer. She also practiced gymnastics in her youth, and classical ballet proved to be the start of her dancing career. Hope took part in dance and theater in high school and college before making her way to Venice, San Francisco and New York as a professional dancer. From an early age she had a sense of social justice and enjoyed story telling so she was naturally drawn to photo-journalism, which gave her the foundation for film-making. Hope studied at the University of Paris III, IV, Center for Critical Studies (1989-90), the University of California, Berkeley, getting her B.A. in History and French (1991) and her M.A. at Stanford University in Documentary Film & Video (2000). Hope then moved back to NYC where she began incorporating music videos and projection design into her cinematography and directing practice. In addition to serving as President Obama's videographer, Hope was Senior Advisor for Video & Senior Road Videographer to Senator Warren's presidential campaign, and then Director, Digital Strategy Advisor and Cinematographer for both the Biden and Harris campaign and administration. Hope lives in New York where she is now enjoying life as a freelancer. They are fascinating works of fiction that really get you thinking about the role of technology in our life... plus the books are page turners and they are clean! They're great options for tweens, teens, and beyond. Amazingly Tom is both an author and an optometrist! In this episode we discuss his new books as well as eye health and the impact of outdoor time on eyesight and eye functioning.  Tom reflects on childhood experiences that may have ingrained the belief that certain accomplishments are out of reach, emphasizing the power of imagination. He shares a personal journey of seeking productivity in his time and highlights the nerve-racking feeling of releasing your creative work into the world. The episode concludes with a nostalgic reflection on the bygone era when outdoor play was the norm, and children stayed outside until the streetlights came on. It's time for another visit with Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck, who joins Tom Hall each week with her reviews of the Maryland-DC-Virginia regional stage. Today, Judy tells us about the current revival of the Tony Award-winning 1966 Broadway musical, Sweet Charity, brought to The Motor House stage by the new Bmore Broadway Live drama troupe. With book by Neil Simon, music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, Sweet Charity  follows the romantic misadventures of Charity Hope Valentine, a “taxi dancer” — or dance partner for hire — at the Fandango ballroom. The musical earned nine Tony nominations in its 1966 Broadway season, and won for Best Choreography. It's filled with humor, romance and pathos, and driven by energetic dance numbers. The revival of Sweet Charity by Bmore Broadway Live — the new theatrical offshoot of the local arts group, Dance & Bmore — is directed and choreographed by the new troupe's founder, C. Jay Philip. It continues at The Motor House at 120 W. North Avenue in Baltimore through Sunday, November 19. Today on Midday, host Tom Hall is delighted to welcome the Ndlovu Youth Choir to the Performance Space at our sister station WTMD, in Towson, Maryland. This talented singing group from South Africa — the troupe with us today is comprised of seven young men and six young women — has become one of the world's most popular and inspirational musical ensembles since it was formed in 2009. The creative outgrowth of an after-school program for orphaned and vulnerable children in Limpopo, South Africa, Ndlovu is now a youth portal to a career in music. Membership in the choir also instills values of togetherness, a work ethic and a sense of social responsibility, and promotes self-discipline, self-confidence, and leadership. The Ndlovu Youth Choir's extraordinary appearances four years ago on the popular TV show America's Got Talent made them the first choir in the history of that show to reach the finals. Their soulful sets won them millions of new fans around the world. On the strength of those AGT performances, they signed a recording contract with SYCO and Sony Music, and their first album debuted at number one on iTunes... Since then, the choir has completed two European tours, sold out every public concert and performed on numerous local and international television and radio shows. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the choir's musical public service messages for the UN's World Health Organization offered hope and inspiration. They also joined many of the world's top musical performers on a digital stage during Global Citizens' "One World: Together at Home" virtual concert.  Along with its founder and musical director Ralf Schmitt, the group is currently in the middle of a month-long Eastern US concert tour, and during today's stop in Baltimore, they'll also be singing up a storm at 7:30 tonight at the Keystone Korner Jazz Club at 1350 Lancaster Street. You can check out the link for ticketing info. But we're happy to have the Ndlovu Youth Choir to sing for us right now, and for the next hour... Check out WYPR's Instagram page for great video clips of this performance!Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

For more, visit https://www.wypr.org/show/midday  (This conversation was originally broadcast on August 7, 2023.) Tom Hall's guest on this encore edition of Midday is Tom Hanks. You know his work over a performing career that has spanned 46 years. You know that he has made dozens of iconic films, and that he has won a gazillion awards. On this episode of Midday we're not going to talk about any of that, we're going to talk instead about his first novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece.  It was published in May. It follows a collection of Tom Hanks' short stories called Uncommon Type: Some Stories, which came out in 2017. Hanks' new novel is about a fictional writer-director who transforms a 1970 comic book into a modern-day super-hero movie. It's a fascinating look behind the camera at the legions of people who are involved in the process of creating a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster. And it's a bright explication of the simple observation offered up by Hanks' protagonist when he says, “Making movies is more fun than fun.” Tom Hanks is a gifted writer, and this novel is funny, poignant, insightful, and, most of all, loving. It's an homage to movie-making and movie makers.  Tom is a member of the Screen Actors Guild, which along with members of the Writers Guild of America, is on strike. We are not going to talk about his movies while he and his union are striking. Tom Hanks joined us on Zoom from Greece.Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.
