Eli West is an American Roots musician from the Pacific Northwest. A multi-instrumental creator of sonic spaces, Eli's former training as a designer informs a sound that is lush and organic – neither manicured nor overgrown. Lauded by Tim O'brien as a musician “making music the World needs,” Eli's reputation as a crafter of considered, toneful environments has fostered collaborations with Bill Frisell, Andrew Marlin, John Reishchman, Julie Fowlis, and many other pillars of the growing Americana movement.  Eli has a brand new album coming out July 11th called “The Shape of a Sway” which you can pre-order at this link HERE! After last week's episode, “The Emergency Is Here,” we got a lot of emails. And the most common reply was: You really think we'll have midterm elections in 2026? Isn't that naïve?I think we will have midterms. But one reason I think so many people are skeptical of that is they're working with comparisons to other places: Mussolini's Italy, Putin's Russia, Pinochet's Chile. But we don't need to look abroad for parallels; it has happened here.Steven Hahn is a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian at New York University and the author of “Illiberal America: A History.” In this conversation, he walks me through some of the most illiberal periods in American history: Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act of 1830, Jim Crow, the Red Scare, Japanese American internment, Operation Wetback. And we discuss how this legacy can help us better understand what's happening right now. This episode contains strong language.Book Recommendations:Democracy in America by Alexis de TocquevilleFrom the War on Poverty to the War on Crime by Elizabeth HintonTroubled Memory by Lawrence N. This conversation is a deep dive into where traditional meets modern and how community shapes the arts.Carolyn Kendrick is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, fiddler, guitarist, and producer. After many happy years on the road as a side musician, Kendrick has blossomed as a solo artist since issuing her debut EP, Tear Things Apart, in 2020. Send us a textMollie O'Brien and Rich Moore first met in 1981 and had both been in several bands in the bar scene before then. They had sometimes performed together but hadn't fully leaned into being a duo. After getting married and having children, they realized it was much harder to perform in the bar scene than it was before. They decided to lean more into performances as a duo in 2006, when their daughters had graduated high school. They primarily perform American Roots music.O'Brien grew up in Wheeling, West Virginia, where she frequently attended local performances of famous artists. At a young age, she learned to play piano and sing along with it. In high school, she and her brother Tim performed various songs (especially from Peter, Paul, and Mary) at churches and coffeehouses.Meanwhile, Moore grew up in Philadelphia, where, at the age of 12, he saw The Beatles performing on the Ed Sullivan Show and became completely absorbed in the idea of music. His mother had already been a pianist and his dad a classical choral singer, and that Christmas, he got his first guitar and (coincidentally) started learning songs from Peter, Paul, and Mary. The two love being able to share music with an audience, and they love being able to perform music together in the studio. O'Brien loves the process of getting the song just right in the studio, and Moore loves the technical aspects of recording in the studio. The two have various solo and duo albums, including their duo albums 900 Baseline and Saints and Sinners, and even though they sometimes have a hard time getting categorized, they are always passionate about the music they create. In this episode, Kate sits down with author and journalist Rachel Slade to discuss her books Making It In America: The Almost Impossible Quest to Manufacture in the USA (and How It Got That Way) and Into the Raging Sea: Thirty-Three Mariners, One Megastore, and the Sinking of El Faro. Rachel's books are incredible explorations of humanity and she deftly weaves together complex threads. We focus on Making It In America in the episode. The book is so much about where trade, manufacturing, farming, immigration, the textile industry, unions, and the history of the hoodie itself meet. We start by exploring how manufacturing made America and touching on the complex series of events that led to the offshoring of the majority of American manufacturing after NAFTA. This episode is about grit and determination and a commitment to vision by American Roots, the hoodie company featured in the book, and what entrepreneurship means and what it might mean to manufacture in America once again. It's a wide-ranging conversation about history, geopolotics, economics and the externalities of focusing solely on the bottom line. It's about building and re-building community and networks of support and it's about what it means for us, as humans, to make things by hand. From Sunday School in Nashville to Sunday dinner at Granny's, my family bushogged our way towards a cohesive religious identity. Even as my mother was returning to the faith of her childhood, my father was moving further away from his, and towards an unlikely home — The American Society of Friends. Introducing a third faith in our household seemed to solidify our identity, rather than shatter it, and my brother and I were quick to absorb the tenets of our father's new faith, a chance we got every summer, for a few years, when we attended SAYMA – the Southern Appalachian Yearly Meeting, including a short stint in Quaker youth group. Still, as much as Quaker ideals of compassion, equality, love, and simplicity lined up with our own Jewish and family values, my mother was deeply uncomfortable with the idea of our being both, and she dearly wanted us to be Jewish. But towards the end of her life, having lived her own experience and used it in turn to counsel dozens of young interfaith couples, she changed her tune...slightly.Special thanks this episode to Jacob's Ladder, for use of their original music in Chapter 7: Back & Forth. Check out all of their music on their website!Jacob's Ladder is an internationally touring band seeking to push the boundaries of contemporary Jewish music and traditional American Roots music through Jewish communal singing and prayer. In melding these two musical worlds, they tell their story through Eastern European Ashkenazic and Sephardic Jewish traditions, but also through their American heritage and its influence on their unique musical style.72 Miles features the stories of three separate interfaith Jewish families–two real, one not, and one mine. Together, they trace 150 years of Kentucky history, with experiences that resonate today—about being Jewish in America, about being Jewish and southern at the same time. About being Jewish, being interfaith, and the blending of the two. So strap in, and take a ride with me, up and down I65, or back and forth on the L&N Railroad. In the end the when and the who don't make as much difference and you might think. But the where sure does. My name is Nathan Jordan Vaughan. It's 72 Miles til Kentucky. In this episode, Sonny Vu, Founder of Alabaster and former founder of Misfit Wearables, and Jeremy Au discuss three main themes: 1. Vietnam & America Roots: Sonny talked about growing up in the Midwest as his older brother's sidekick and a Vietnamese immigrant who spoke Vietnamese to his American friends. He decided to study Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois, but quickly realized his passion lay elsewhere - and shifted to eventually studying computational linguistics at MIT under Professor Noam Chomsky. He also shared why he felt Noam Chomsky was misunderstood by the broader public. 2. Founding Misfit Wearables ($260M acquisition by Fossil): Sonny's entrepreneurial journey started when he participated in the MIT $50K Business Plan Competition with FireSpout, a startup focused on machine learning-assisted natural language processing (NLP). After selling his first startup, he co-founded other startups including AgaMatrix, an electrochemical biosensor for diabetes management, and Misfit Wearables, a wearable technology company that was eventually acquired by Fossil for $260 million. He discussed how he figured out product-market fit by reading 5,000 reviews of competitors' wearables and emphasized the importance of timing and market needs. He also stressed the importance of assembling a crew that's deeply committed to the mission beyond personal gain and celebrates the rare and precious servant leaders who prioritize the team and the mission over themselves. 3. Navigating Tough Decisions: Sonny shared a story of physical bravery while hiking in Turkey, as well as a critical business decision during his second company's near bankruptcy, where ethical considerations led him to reject a term sheet that would have been detrimental to previous investors. He asserted that true bravery and courage emerge not from the absence of fear but from facing and navigating through it despite potential risks. The key is considering the long-term perspective of self-perception and integrity. Jeremy and Sonny also talked about how the disciplines of art, math, and languages and are a unified pursuit of beauty, the evolving nature of entrepreneurship, failure as a more potent teacher than success, the importance of sales in startups, and the value of continuous learning. What we are seeing now in the US, with the rollback of so many progressive victories, and with the passage of bigoted legislation towards sexual minorities, is in many ways the final stage of a decades-long strategy by violent strains of American Christian Evangelism. That strategy has seen Africa used as a testing ground in an ideological war against sexual minorities. And that war has returned home with a vengeance; newly emboldened, with more support, and with a more focused strategic vision. Victoria Elizondo is chef owner of Cochinita Co. in Houston where she insists that fresh and preferably local ingredients are key to her vibrant and flavorful Mexican food. At her restaurant in the Greater East End, Cochinita co., she usually has sever al dishes featuring the ancient food that is native to Texas for thousands of years: nopalitos. When she was 12, Elizondo left her native Nuevo Leon, south of the Texas Mexican border, with her mother to move to the United States, where she became a DACA recipient. Following in her mother's footsteps, she got her first job at 16 as a restaurant hostess. During her career she has worked at top Houston restaurants like State of Grace, Pax Americana and Xochi. In 2016 she started her own business venture, Cochinita Co., initially a food truck concept that pivoted to a pop up and catering model, now a small restaurant that is receiving high honors. The Houston Chronicle named Cochinita Co. one of the top 25 Best Restaurants of 2022. This year, Elizondo is nominated for the prestigious national Emerging Chef James Beard Award. Chef Joseph Gomez, is honoring his roots through his new food truck Con Todo, focusing on comida frontera (Spanish for “border town food”). The Rio Grande Valley native debuted the truck in 2021 at Celis Brewery's new beer garden in North Austin. Gomez who's worked at Austin restaurants such as Be More Pacific, Tha i Kun, She's Not Here, and Easy Tiger sees the truck as showcasing the foods and stories of the Rio Grande Valley and his family. It's through the menu that he wants to jump start “a long conversation about Mexican food in south Texas,” and what it truly is. Eater named Con Todo one of America's 15 best new restaurants of 2022. Dale is also the chairman and owner of Forest Green Rovers, a professional soccer team based in England, that has been recognized by FIFA and the United Nations as the “world's greenest football club.” And, as I write in the December issue of British Vogue, Dale is the founder of Skydiamond, a tech start-up that grows diamonds from carbon captured from the air. Also on this holiday episode, I'm going to tell you a bit about our music contributor Eric Brace, an American Roots musician, Grammy-nominated producer, and founder of Red Beet Records, based in Nashville, Tennessee. Eric's first band, Last Train Home, put out “Holiday Limited,” a now-classic EP of festive tunes, available on SoundCloud, and I'll share a bit of that lovely music with you, as well.Read the transcript of this episodeGet to know Dana Thomas and her book FashionopolisDiscover the fashion brand Another Tomorrow

“Indian Makes Attempt to Kill”. That's the newspaper article heading I mentioned a few years back in the Facebook group, “Indian Territory and Oklahoma History” in order to share about my Uncle Cicero Coley shooting through the window of his white guardian's house in an attempt to kill him for stealing his land allotments. I had come to what I thought was the end of my years of research about my Coley family members and I hoped that perhaps this last-ditch attempt might spur some interest. Wouldn't you know, it worked! A distant cousin of mine reached out to me and introduced me to another cousin, uncovering some missing pieces to my family story puzzle. (I'm still looking for more Coley family members so if you know of any Choctaw Coleys, please reach out to me!) Tracing lineage and finding the history and stories of our American Indian ancestors is quite the challenge. But today my guest is here to bring you (and me) some hope. Meet my guest, Gwen Takes Horse, a Genealogist at Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma who's here to help us understand how to trace our Native roots! The information Gwen shares is not just for Choctaws – it can apply to several other tribes. And she also has some good tips for us in general that can apply to anyone. Take a listen, y'all and feel free to share your family stories with us if you'd like – we love to hear them! If you're Choctaw, the Choctaw Nation Genealogy Department can be reached by emailing genealogy@choctawnation.com or 800-522-6170 (ask for the Genealogy Department). If I say “English garden,” you probably conjure a mental picture of colorful mixed borders and garden rooms enclosed by hedging. But what's the essence of an American garden? That was what a new book called “American Roots” set out to explore, profiling 20 home gardens around the nation for design inspiration, and also for how-to advice geared to gardening success.  Garden designer Nick McCullough and his wife, Allison, are the team behind an Ohio-based landscape design firm, and also behind the new book, “American Roots: Lessons and Inspiration from the Designers Reimagining our Home Gardens.” In our conversation, Nick shared some takeaways that he gleaned from the process of making the book.

In this episode of Bourbon With Friends. The BWF team sits down with Country Music Artist and Veteran Ryan Weaver. Ryan's personal story is like no other artist in country music today. Growing up with a family of eleven in a small town in Floral City, Florida, he joined the Army right after high school. After several years of working as a Military Intelligence Analyst, Ryan followed in the footsteps of his two older brothers, Steve and Aaron, by attending Warrant Officer Candidate School and flight school. He graduated top of his class in flight school, becoming a Black Hawk Aviator.  In April 2003, he deployed to Baghdad International Airport in Iraq. Shortly after, one of his brothers, Aaron, was deployed just west of him in Fallujah. On January 8, 2004, Aaron was killed in action when the Medivac helicopter he was a passenger in was shot down by enemy fire. Ryan certainly understood mortality and the risks of combat…  After all, Aaron had survived the bloody 1993 battle in Mogadishu, Somalia – the same battle that became the basis for the movie, Black Hawk Down. When Aaron died, however, something changed for Ryan. He returned from combat, taking a new position training the next generation of Army aviators and officers at Fort Rucker, Alabama and has not piloted a Black Hawk since that fateful day. On December 17, 2013 Ryan's brother-in-law, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Randy Billings, was killed in action in Afghanistan when the Black Hawk helicopter he was piloting was shot down by an enemy ground-detonated explosive device.  This second heartbreaking loss made the Weaver family a two-time Gold Star family. Both of his brothers' ultimate sacrifices continue to fuel Ryan's fire to accomplish his dreams in music. In late 2016, Ryan released the music video for his single “Burn,” featuring Kris “Tanto” Paranto and John “Tig” Tiegen from the movie 13 Hours: Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. “Burn” aired nationwide on The Country Network and Heartland, and internationally at over 5,000 retailers, restaurants, and entertainment venues throughout the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017. Ryan's first music video “Crank It” played nationally on ZUUS Country TV and TNN/Heartland Network and spent 8 weeks on their Top 10 Video Countdown – a network record. In 2017, Ryan was named the Patriotic Voice of the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) for their Celebrate America Campaign.  The World Finals is the biggest global stage in professional bull riding – a booming sport now seen in more than 400 million homes worldwide. The Celebrate America Campaign is a season-long initiative that honors America's heroes, inspires youth, and brings communities together. Weaver made his debut in the primetime performance slot, which was previously held by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler in 2016. At that time, the PBR officially launched Ryan as a PBR artist and debuted his new EP entitled Celebrate America.  Ryan worked closely with hit songwriter Wynn Varble on the Celebrate America EP, co-writing three of the four songs. He has toured the U.S. and internationally to Australia with the PBR in 2018 and 2019, performing his songs and singing the “National Anthem” at US events. He has several performances scheduled in Australia this year. Ryan performed on the first single from the West Point Military Academy's Benny Havens Band's  debut album Songs That Save Our Lives. The song was short-listed for GRAMMY Award consideration in the American Roots category. The album also featured Charlie Daniels. Follow Ryan on IG - @ryanweavercountryAlso check out his website and cool merch https://ryanweaver.net/
