Today, most of the world's refugees — and most internally displaced people — are uprooted from their homes for protracted periods, with the length of displacement sometimes averaging more than two decades. In this episode, I sit down with Muzabel Welongo, Founder and Executive Director of Resilience Action International and a recent graduate of Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service. A former refugee himself, Muzabel describes some of the systemic issues surrounding refugee aid, the negative consequences of well-intended aid efforts and the need to shift the paradigm from aid dependence to self-reliance. FHI 360's Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Fine, hosts conversations with creative thinkers, respected leaders and local actors who are at the forefront of human development and who bring diverse perspectives to timely, high-stakes and sometimes controversial issues affecting people around the world.

She happens to be a refugee herself and the co-founder of CantDoNothing.org, a nonprofit organization and awareness campaign that supports Syrian refugees. Erin is a friend of mine since childhood. She was the inspiration for this episode since she's been working all around the world with refugees and displaced people for 7+ years. Erin shared with me the particular struggles faced by women and girls in these communities. I learned so much from her, and I know you will too.

Zafer Ertem wants to help Syrian refugees in Turkey – despite resistance from the authorities. Zafer Ertem is hugely disappointed with the international community’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis. The German with Turkish roots therefore decided to take direct action himself. He went to western Turkey, where hundreds of refugees are still arriving daily – with growing doubts over whether the perilous and illegal sea crossing to Greece is worth it considering the likelihood of being sent back to Turkey. Zafer Ertem and a group of fellow-volunteers have been building a camp in the town of Torbali, where refugees have access to water, food and even health care. Most importantly of all: they are also provided with jobs – which helps to persuade the refugees to stay put, says Ertem. The Turkish authorities are threatening to close the camp, however, eager to relocate as many refugees as possible back to the region near the border to Syria. Will Zafer Ertem manage to give the refugees the prospect of a new life – and save his village?
