Alice and Martha discuss their hottest, most original takes on poor, blundering Neville in the first three books. He may be worth twelve of Malfoy, but a game of Exploding Snap with him is the last thing Harry would ever want. Is your Remembrall glowing red? Turn to Page 143, The Midnight Duel. Today’s lesson is called Bearing Witness. The chapter starts with Harry eager for his first flying lesson, despite worrying about making a fool of himself in front of Malfoy and the Slytherins. During the lesson, Harry finds that he is a natural, and makes a brilliant, but unsupervised, swooping catch of Neville’s Remembrall after Draco throws it, triumphing over Draco’s bullying. That triumph seems short-lived, however, when Professor McGonagall marches Harry away from the broomsticks and toward classrooms. Unexpectedly, she turns Oliver Wood - the Gryffindor quidditch captain - onto the idea of Harry being their Seeker. Later, Malfoy challenges Harry to a duel that night. Ron joins Harry as his second, Hermione as an objector to breaking rules, and Neville as an unwitting tag-a-long. Draco is a no-show to the duel, but seems to have informed Filch of the change Gryffindors might be wandering about after curfew. After scrambling away, the foursome stumble into a locked room that houses a massive three-headed dog who is guarding a trap-door. Brenna and guest star Hannah McGregor arrive at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but Joe is nowhere to be found! The result is more drama than a Gryffindor v Slytherin Quidditch match as Brenna has to duck out early, meaning Hannah is less guest, and more like the glue holding this episode together. When Joe finally joins (presumably after his Remembrall turned red), the trio discuss the reasons why Harry Potter has become such a phenomenon, why the series has lent itself to so much fan fiction and the troubling class and race issues that Rowling historically reproduces. Plus: Brenna admits a startling preference for an unusual character, Joe reveals a feud with his husband with regard to House sorting and Hannah explains the rules for real life Quidditch (despite claiming to hate the sport!). If you want to find out which House you would be sorted into, complete the quiz Hannah mentions via Tumblr Sorting Hat Chats. In Homework: Joe is absent and Brenna is exhausted, so Hannah explains the queer attraction to Stardew Valley. Want to connect with the show? The first time we see her, in the third book, she asks Neville to use one of the blue cups for tea-leaves-reading after he breaks his first one. Neville, already nervous at the best of time, promptly breaks the first cup he uses. She ends the lesson by telling him he'll be late next time, "so mind you work extra hard to catch up". Hermione believes this is why people die when they see "the Grim". http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main.
