Today, we finish lower hell. Dcn. Harrison Garlick is joined by Dr. Jason Baxter of Benedictine College to discuss cantos 6-11 of Dante's Inferno.Check out thegreatbookspodcast.com for other great books!Check out our Patreon for our 80+ Question & Answer guide to the Inferno. From our guide:27. The Third Circle of Hell – Gluttony (Canto 6) Musa explains the third circle and the contrapasso, “the shades in this circle are the gluttons, and their punishment fits their sin. Gluttony, like all the sins of incontinence, subjects reason to desire; in this case desire is a voracious appetite. Thus, the shades howl like dogs—in desire, without reason; they are sunk in slime, the image of their excess. The warm comfort their gluttony brought them in life here has become cold, dirty rain and hail.”[1] The beast Cerberus—a “three-headed doglike beast”—dwells in the third circle.[2] The beast both represents the sin of gluttony through its own immense appetite and further punishes those shades in the third circle as he “flays and mangles” the shades of that circle.[3] Musa also notes “with his three heads, he appears to be a prefiguration of Lucifer and thus another infernal distortion of the Trinity.”[4] On their way toward the fourth circle, Dante the Pilgrim asks Virgil whether the punishment of the souls in hell will be increased or lessened on the Final Judgment.[5] Virgil explains that the pain of those in hell will be “more perfect” after the Final Judgment, as the souls in hell will be reunited with their bodies after the bodily resurrection.[6]30. The Fourth Circle of Hell – the Prodigal & Miserly (VII)As Virgil and the Pilgrim enter into the fourth circle of hell, they are greeted by Plutus (Pluto), the Roman god of wealth, who speaks incoherently and whom Virgil dismisses by calling him “cursed Wolf of hell.”[1] The reference to “wolf” recalls the she-wolf at the beginning and reminds the reader the Pilgrim is still journeying through the circles of sins related to incontinence. Here the Pilgrim sees shades “to the sound of their own screams, straining their chests, they rolled enormous weights, and when they met and clashed against each other… screaming ‘Why hoard?,' the other side, ‘why waste?'”[2] The Pilgrim sees the contrapasso of the miserly and the prodigal, who, forming two semi-circles, push their heavy weights (symbolizing their material wealth) and shove against each other (as their disordered uses of wealth were opposite).[3] Virgil teaches the Pilgrim about Lady Fortune, who serves as an angel of God determining the fortunes of men and nations.[4] Note that Lady Fortune is often depicted with a wheel, and that this circle of hell resembles a giant broken wheel of the shades that mismanaged their...

It is called a comedy in the classical sense of ending well, as opposed to tragedy which ends poorly. Dante the Poet masterfully weaves together Holy Scripture, Greco-Roman mythology, Aristotle, Roman history, St. Thomas Aquinas, and more to present the reader an excellent map of the human soul and its loves. “It is the Summa Theologiae in poetry,” says Dr. Prudlo, “and I think it's one of the greatest, greatest achievements, single achievements by a human being that's ever been attained.”What is the Inferno? The Inferno tells of Dante's pilgrimage through hell alongside his pagan guide, the Roman poet Virgil. The Inferno is less an eschatological treatise attempting to explain the actual geography of hell and more a moral tale on the reality of human desire and the soul. It not a mystical vision akin to St. John's Revelation or the ecstasies of St. Teresa of Avila. As such, Dante the Poet will place mythological characters in hell, like the three-headed dog Cerberus or the Roman god of the underworld, Pluto. The purpose is not literal but pedagogical. In a similar fashion, the placement of a soul in hell, like a Pope Nicholas III or Helen of Troy, is not a eschatological claim of who is actually in hell but a moral one. Everything in the Inferno is intended to instruct us in virtue and the proper rectitude of the soul. Why should we read Dante's Inferno? The Inferno is an invitation to examine your soul. Dante the Poet is a master of the soul and its loves. He tears away the acceptable veneer on human desire and exposes the ugly reality of sin and its transformative effect upon the human soul into something imploded and bestial. And Dante the Poet invites the reader to contemplate his or her soul and its loves within an ordered whole. As stated, the Divine Comedy is St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae is poetic form, and Dante the Poet weaves together Holy Scripture, Aristotle, mythology, astronomy, and more into one intelligible cosmos. Reality is intelligible and holds lessons for our sanctification and salvation. We are invited to become...

Ethereal, soul-stirring, and playful, Baby Cerberus (Buckrider Books, 2024) by Natasha Ramoutar traces joy and kinship across a multitude of lives. Flitting from myths and folklore to video games to imagined futures, each piece asks us to consider how we care for one another. As we move through sentient galleries, swashbuckling adventures, and the doors of Atlantis, the collection reorients us in each section with the riddles as two lost souls try to find each other through time. These poems tug on the invisible threads between us all, trying to find what tethers us together and, in turn, what keeps us here. While Baby Cerberus centers fun and nostalgia with allusions to video games, internet lore, and Tamagotchis, there are still heavy themes throughout which address misogyny, racism, and colonization. The unique integration of literary topics with some of the more pop culture references will distinguish the book in the minds of readers and expand what we can ask of poetry. More about Natasha Ramoutar: Natasha Ramoutar is a writer of Indo-Guyanese descent from Toronto. Her debut collection of poetry Bittersweet, published in 2020 by Mawenzi House, was shortlisted for the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award. She was the editor of FEEL WAYS, an anthology of Scarborough literature. She is a senior editor with Augur Magazine and serves on the editorial board at Wolsak & Wynn. About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Fuse, her memoir of mixed-race identity and mental health, was released by Guernica Editions in 2021 and won the 2023 Canadian Bookclub Award for Nonfiction/Memoir. BEST OF: Seven bowls of God's wrath are poured out in the Bible by divine spirits - angels or demons. These plagues include sores, frogs, and hailstones, which can be attributed to demons like Lucifer, Bufonite, and Belial. The biggest bowl, Super Bowl 56, takes place on the eve of Valentine's Day or Lupercalia, a Roman festival of cleansing and fertility heavily focused on the goat, dog, and wolf. These creatures also act as guides in the Underworld throughout various mythologies that involve the soul/spirit of the butterfly and the shadow-self. The Big Game kicks off with the horned beasts, the Rams, against the Bengal Tigers. The 56th Halftime performers include Dr Dre, the GOAT, and Snoop Dogg, the dog or Lion, as his other name suggests. The Lion/Tiger and Goat also appear in images of Bauer and Azazel. The dog can be found in Cerberus. The other performers are Mary J. Blige, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar, all three aligned with the High Priestess, the shadow self, and the butterfly of the soul. Lupercalia also initiates the new year, and in 2022 it is that of the Tiger. The Chinese called Sagittarius the tiger, otherwise known as the archer linked to Jupiter, Ammon, Orion, Osiris the Hunter, Cupid, and Otherworldy guides like Anubis, the jackal. Combing these symbols at Halftime, coupled with the teams playing in the game, there is certainly enough to pick through for meanings that are both present and non-existent, including commercials depicting Zeus/Jupiter. These archetypes and themes can be used to summon the most Divine or the most Infernal. When Eminem says "it must be the ganga", implying marijuana, there is the possibility that the rap community is referring to Ganga-Gramma, the demon who pours out bowls with a pitchfork. At the very least, the event initiates the new year with a mass of energy, and those clever enough to see and understand its symbols may find divination for the future, and a marker for our current state of affairs.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.

rWotD Episode 2794: Cerberus (protein) Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Friday, 27 December 2024 is Cerberus (protein).Cerberus is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CER1 gene. Cerberus is a signaling molecule which contributes to the formation of the head, heart and left-right asymmetry of internal organs. This gene varies slightly from species to species but its overall functions seem to be similar.Cerberus is secreted by the anterior visceral endoderm and blocks the action of BMP, Nodal and Wnt, secreted by the primitive node, which allows for the formation of a head region. This is accomplished by inhibiting the formation of mesoderm in this region. Xenopus Cerberus causes a protein to be secreted that is able to induce the formation of an ectopic head. Knockdown experiments have helped to explain Cerberus's role in both the formation of the head and left and right symmetry. These experiments have shown that Cerberus helps to keep Nodal from crossing to the right side of the developing embryo, allowing left and right asymmetry to form. This is why misexpression of Cerberus can cause the heart to fold in the opposite direction during development. When Cerberus is “knocked down” and BMP and Wnt are up regulated the head does not form. Other experiments using mice that this gene has been “knocked out” showed no head defects, which suggest that it is the combination of the up regulation of BMP and Wnt along with the absence of Cerberus that causes this defect. For the heart, Cerberus is one of several factors that inhibits Nodal to initiate cardiomyogenic differentiation The Cerberus gene family produces many different signal proteins that are antagonistically involved in establishing anterior-posterior patterning and left-right patterning in vertebrate embryos. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:18 UTC on Friday, 27 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Cerberus (protein) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Ruth.

Britain is supposed to be a nation of animal lovers, especially when it comes to pet dogs. According to the PDSA, 29% of UK adults own a dog, which gives an estimated population of 10.6 million pet dogs. While 29% isn't a majority, the number of pet dogs in the country has increased over the last few years. So it seems only fair to see how this popular animal appears in folklore. After all, I've already covered their eternal nemesis, the cat! In folklore, they sometimes appear as death omens—dogs persistently howling meant death was imminent. And they also appear in mythology, with Cerberus the three-headed dog guarding the Greek Underworld, and Anubis, the jackal-headed god presiding over the weighing of the heart ceremony in ancient Egypt. Let's not forget Sirius, in the Canis Major constellation, literally known as the dog star. They take the form of spectral hounds, loyal companions, witches' familiars, and even give their name to a hangover cure. So let's explore the folklore of dogs in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! To wrap up the first ever backlog month I am joined by friend of the show Mick Arcade to talk about Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII! This game brought out some varying emotions in me. At some points I really enjoyed my time with the game and was happy it got chosen. And then at other points I was frustrated beyond belief with how the story unfolds. But with this mix of feelings is it still worth playing Dirge of Cerberus in 2024? Is this really the most Nomura-ass game you will ever play? You will have to listen to find out! This is the Tranquillusionist, in which I, Helen Zaltzman, give your brain a break by temporarily supplanting your interior monologue with words that don't make you feel feelings. Note: this is NOT a normal episode of the Allusionist, where you might learn something about language and your brain might be stimulated. The Tranquillusionist's purpose is to soothe your brain and for you to learn very little, except for something about Zeus's attitude to bad drivers. There's a collection of other Tranquillusionists at theallusionist.org/tranquillusionist, on themes including champion dogs, Australia's big things, gay animals and more. Today: constellations that got demoted into ex-constellations, featuring airborne pregnancy, cats of the skies, and one of the 18th century's most unpopular multi-hyphenates. When three people in Philadelphia inhale dust developed by a scientist who has discovered parallel universes, they are transported into an interdimensional no-man's-land that is populated by supernatural beings. From there, they go on to an alternate-future version of Philadelphia—a frightening dystopian nation-state in which citizens are numbered, not named. How will they escape? In The Heads of Cerberus and Other Stories (MIT Press, 2024), introduced by Dr. Lisa Yaszek, you will find this world-bending story as well as five others written by Francis Stevens, the pseudonym of Gertrude Barrows Bennett, a pioneering science fiction and fantasy adventure writer from Minneapolis who made her literary debut at the precocious age of 17. Often celebrated as “the woman who invented dark fantasy,” Bennett possessed incredible range; her groundbreaking stories—produced largely between 1904 and 1919—suggest that she is better understood as the mother of modern genre fiction writ large. Bennett's work has anticipated everything from the work of Philip K. Dick to Superman comics to The Hunger Games, making it as relevant now as it ever was. Francis Stevens (Gertrude Barrows Bennett, 1884-1948) was the first American woman to publish widely in fantasy and science fiction. Her five short stories and seven longer works of fiction, all of which appeared in pulp magazines such as Argosy, All-Story Weekly, and Weird Tales, would influence everyone from H.P Lovecraft to C.L. Moore. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. On this episode, I have my second sit down with Ken of Cerberus Strength. I saw Ken share a post on his social media that he was struggling with his identity. He competed at a high level in strongman for many years. It was a huge part of his life. Eventually, as other aspects of life came into the fray, coupled with injuries that had accumulated from pushing so hard for so long, the fire that once motivated him to train and compete wasn't there anymore. He and I talk about the valuable lessons we've learned over the years of burning the candle at both ends, and sometimes in the middle. The power of reflection, community, purpose, and basically realizing that there's more to life than just being an athlete. There are also many other ways we can still contribute to the strength community through other endeavors. Episode 101 Rebekah Barsotti Case Update We originally covered the case of 33 year old Rebekah Barsotti back in episode 46 of Missing Persons. Rebekah, along with her dog Cerberus, disappeared in the area of Clark Fork River near Alberton, Montana in July, 2021. She had been going through a divorce, and her family believed that she may have been the victim of foul play. When Cerberus's remains were found days later 10 miles downstream, but Rebekah's were not, it only fueled concerns that Rebekah wasn't an accidental drowning victim; despite that being the theory of the police investigating the case. Finally on May 17, 2022, fisherman discovered Rebekah's remains on the bank of the Clark Fork River, almost a year after Rebekah went missing. In the minds of Rebekah's family, the discovery only served to re-ask old questions, and it brought a host of new ones. Police consider the case closed, but Rebekah's family believe that there is more than meets the eye. In this episode, we update listeners on the case, and try to figure out; what happened to Rebekah Barsotti.
Send us a textWhen pondering, debating, writing or planning our focus tends fall to the extremes; this or that, which means we ignore the stuff in-between. It probably traces back to some survival mechanism our ancestors developed to determine what foods were safe to eat, what passages were too risky to travel, where we might be safe to sleep at night, and what hours of the day to do which behaviors. But like the ego, which we've discussed in past episodes, maybe it's time for a human upgrade. In fact, maybe the biggest breakthroughs in humanity lie in that juicy in-between space. On a recent trip to Chicago with my mom, our in between time was where the magic happened. Forgotten stories from her childhood and young adulthood were shared. As we rode in the back seat of an Uber to the ballpark, or home from a museum, or on our way to a river boat tour, well, that's when, with the city scrolling past the windows, my mother's deep memories came forward. I want YOU to benefit from the magic of in between, too.Not just by taking advantage of the time and space between Points A and B, but also by paying attention during all the moments.Let's get into it!Show Sources and MaterialsDennis Ritchie's blog, The Art of Standing, blog post titled, The Magic in BetweenDennis Ritchie's Blog, The Art of Standing, blog post titled, The Road to Bell BuckleThe In-Between, Brizo Magazine dot com, M. In this episode, we're joined by Chris Eastman, CEO of the Pendrick Group, a Cerberus portfolio company that specializes in financial services solutions for healthcare companies. We discuss the differences between medical debt and other types of debt, as well as how states have been regulating medical debt including the collection of medical debt. Mr. Eastman discusses his company's efforts to provide cash flows into hospitals and other healthcare providers that are operating at razor-thin margins. Alan Kaplinsky, Senior Counsel in Ballard Spahr's Consumer Financial Services Group, leads the conversation, and is joined by Joseph Schuster, a Partner in the group.

This episode comes from the SuperReturn conference in Berlin, with guest Victor Khosla, Founder of SVP. Set up in 2001, the firm manages $18 billion in credit, with an impressive long-term track record in identifying credit opportunities. Victor describes himself as the ‘Accidental Investor', initially hired as a strategic consultant for a Citibank project in the 1990s, only then to join them to help develop their credit business. He recaps his journey from India through Citi, Cerberus, and Moore Capital, before founding his business with the assisted funding from Moore Capital, to identify and buy out-of-favour debt instruments whether distressed or mispriced. Victor describes today's markets, the differences between the US and Europe, opportunities that are emerging from private equity indigestion and reduced exits, allied to significant refinancing needs. As the owner of Swissport, the world's largest baggage handler, he recounts their post-COVID purchase and the debt/equity swap, and where ownership of the debt in this - and many other instances - means a further need for involvement on the business operations side.
