Episode 486: It Could Use More Snot This week Host Dave Bledsoe proffered a Mickey Mantle rookie card in exchange for the clearance of his bar tab despite the fact that it was clearly printed on cardstock by an inkjet low on cyan. (They forced him to eat it before they tossed him out.) On the show this week we examine the disgusting kids collectible that swept the nation in the mid 1980's (It was like pervy Pokemon!) Along the way we discover that Dave had no friends as a kid. (Just like now!) Then we dive in collectible cards and where they came from. (Smarmy nobles and cigarettes.) Then we opened up a pack of Topps Bubble Gum to see what we got. (Dammit it's Bobby Bonilla!) We discuss how Topps branched out in the parody “novelty” card market with some clever takes on capitalism and that morphed into a disgusting parody of the most popular toy of the early 80's: The Garbage Pail Kids. Our Sponsor this week is Dave-O-Mon Cards, gotta drink ‘em all! We open the show with the trailer for the Garbage Pail Kids movie and close with the Donna's signing about the kids in this country. GOP presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy hit the campaign trail Wednesday with former Rep. Steve King, a controversial figure who lost his seat in 2020 after gaining notoriety for making racist remarks. King once told The New York Times, “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?” He also earned condemnation from members of his own party for comments he once made about whether humans would exist if not for babies born as a result of rape and incest. A onetime Republican power broker in northwest Iowa, King has receded from the public spotlight since losing his House seat to now-Rep. Randy Feenstra, a fellow Republican who challenged him three years ago. But King appeared Wednesday with Ramaswamy, and while he hasn't formally endorsed in the 2024 presidential race, his words left little doubt about how he felt.
A common question I get is, “how can I make money with my podcast.” But what most people don't realize is sponsorship isn't the only way. So for today's tip, I want to share with you my SMASH framework – 5 ways to make money with your podcast:S: Sponsorship -The most common way people think of to monetize their podcast because it's the most visible. You get a company to give you money in order to advertise on your show.M: Membership - Another commonly known way to monetize. Instead of asking potential sponsors, you ask your listeners to directly support the show, usually in exchange for some members-only benefits.A: Affiliate Links - This is the lowest barrier to entry, but may take time to get a decent income. You sign up for affiliate programs of products you commonly recommend, and you get a cut of each sale from people who click your link.S: Selling (Products or Services) - I feel is the least-used way to monetize a podcast. You, using the podcast to prove your expertise, sell directly to your audience.H: Helping (Coaching, Consulting, Courses) - Similar to Selling, you use you podcast to land consulting clients, coaching clients, or sell your online courses. This could be a little easier than selling since you can have a podcast that does exactly what your “helping” service does.Naturally, you're not locked into one. But understanding your options will help you craft your episodes and your call to action; it will also help you figure out where to spend your time. You can get more ideas in this free PDF. Welcome Michele, resume coach, recruiter, and LI influencer extraordinaire. Michele is a seasoned global HR professional who is the owner of O&H Consulting. We brought Michele to RJT to talk about resumes, job searches and to give insider tips around job seeking. Michele's big picture resume rules: The top one-third of your first page needs to answer who you are, what you want, and why does the reader care? Depending on which ATS (applicant tracking system) we're working on, we either see the actual resume you uploaded, or we get a parsed version which is word soup. No pictures. Ever. No canned phrases -- recruiters know them and dislike them...if you have the word “athlete”, you better be talking about a sport…. Insider tip: recruiters look at your resume for a few seconds to decide if you are a no or a maybe. If you're a maybe, we'll give you a lot of time, but if we can't see a maybe in a few seconds, we won't scroll down. Most recruiters work with databases called an ATS. Many of them parse fancy resumes into word soup, so make sure you have a text only resume if you are applying online. On your resume, NO PICTURES. Some companies have to rule you out if you attach pictures. Words only. Michele advises to show both who you are as a professional and who you are as a person. Michele talks about a friend who is both an Engineering Manager and an Aspiring Zombie Novelist... Recruiters want to talk to people who are interesting, so grab their attention appropriately! LinkedIn is a business, so if you want your profile noticed, you need to be an active LinkedIn user. If you're searching for a job, it helps to be an active user, because you come up in the algorithm more often. To be an active user, you must have 500+ connections, and provide five pieces of data a day, meaning a like, comment, share, or post. Liking five things a day matters to the algorithm, and you will come up higher when people are searching for you. Some recruiters have special access to LI Recruiter, which is very $$, so many recruiters don't use it. We talk about Open To Work... Michele thinks it's fine, but it also leaves you open to contingent recruiter reach outs and people selling bad resume writing to you. Michele, as a resume writer, talks about how to find someone who isn't a snake oil salesperson resume writer (they're out there in droves). There's a LI group called Job Seeker Guardians whose purpose is to keep people from being ripped off by bad resume writers. Ask them before hiring someone! Also, make sure they have been an active recruiter in the last 5 years. The industry has changed, and you want someone who has the most recent information. Someone who has never been a recruiter, even if they've hired people before, won't have the perspective of someone who has recruited. Lastly, if someone asks for your resume and wants to send it back “done” and doesn't talk to you isn't worth it. If it's under $100, they're either not spending time or their time isn't valuable ... either are a rip off. Smarmy resume writers love ripping off executives. Execs need a 1-sheet for the panel and Board, but they also need a developed 4 page strategy around the strategies and cultures they've created. Even more tips? Numbers! Numbers create context. Don't tell me your duties, but tell me your impact. As a sales person, we know you create rapport, but we want to know what your numbers were and did you hit them? What did you sell, who did you sell it to, and how much did you sell??? The technology you work with is important. What systems do you use? For example, in HR, what HRIS do you know? Payroll system? ATS? Performance system??? People search for the technologies you use. That said, saying you know email, Word, Excel, Zoom just makes you someone living in 2021. For people who are managers, they still brand themselves as an IC and then are surprised when they are only tagged as an IC and then get rejected because they're a strategic contributor. Be honest about the technology you know or you risk getting caught. Saying you know version 1.7 when the latest version is 1.2 will get you caught. Also, do not lie about degrees or jobs -- background checks will catch you. Lying in an application will not go well for you and will put you on the “never hire” list for that company. In general, telling the truth will be so much easier and will help them get to know the real you. We asked Michele how to work with recruiters. Her first piece of advice is to never pay a recruiter/website to find you a job. Her second piece of advice is that recruiters work for companies, and not for you. Help them figure out if it's a waste of time, yours and theirs, and see if it's a fit. They're not the hiring manager, but can be a great advocate, and they want to see if you're going to be a fit. Have a pitch of what you're doing and what you're looking for and be ready to give it when asked. Be ready to answer questions and talk about money up front because the recruiter is trying to see if it's a good fit. It's not worth your time if they can't pay you.
We talk King Kong, Tom Segura, and MMA.

To no surprise and to much dismay, New York's Bill de Blasio becomes the first mayor to implement a vaccine mandate in a major U.S. city. Turn to Page 143, The Midnight Duel. Today’s lesson is called Bearing Witness. The chapter starts with Harry eager for his first flying lesson, despite worrying about making a fool of himself in front of Malfoy and the Slytherins. During the lesson, Harry finds that he is a natural, and makes a brilliant, but unsupervised, swooping catch of Neville’s Remembrall after Draco throws it, triumphing over Draco’s bullying. That triumph seems short-lived, however, when Professor McGonagall marches Harry away from the broomsticks and toward classrooms. Unexpectedly, she turns Oliver Wood - the Gryffindor quidditch captain - onto the idea of Harry being their Seeker. Later, Malfoy challenges Harry to a duel that night. Ron joins Harry as his second, Hermione as an objector to breaking rules, and Neville as an unwitting tag-a-long. Draco is a no-show to the duel, but seems to have informed Filch of the change Gryffindors might be wandering about after curfew. After scrambling away, the foursome stumble into a locked room that houses a massive three-headed dog who is guarding a trap-door. For this minisode, I am sharing my perspective on selling - specifically focusing on finding solutions for your clients, not selling goods or services. Sounds counter-intuitive but for creative entrepreneurs that often struggle with selling, feeling smarmy or manipulative, this perspective will help change your mindset and help you grow your business. Learn the difference between your prospect's external problems and internal problems so you can adjust to create a solution the speaks to core needs. I also talk through the importance of being a trusted resource for your prospects & clients as well as the steps you can take to position yourself as an expert in your market so people are perceiving you as a commodity and shopping only on price. Today we have Kirsten Oliphant on the podcast to talk about collaborations. She is an author and blogger. She has a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and is the leader of the CreateIfWriting podcast, website and online community. She is the author of 5 books, including her latest Creative Collaborations: How to Form Lasting and Lucrative Partnerships without Being Smarmy. Episode Highlights: Kirsten has built a number of online communities. The first community she built was before Facebook communities were prevalent. From a call out on Twitter, she started a support group of women writers to talk weekly about what they were writing and what their struggles were. Kirsten feels the Facebook Groups platform lends itself well to growing communities and moderates several groups. Kirsten’s two most active groups include CreateIfWriting and The Profitable Blogging Summit. She also maintains about 30 other private and pop-up communities. What are some of the top tips you have for building a strong community? Kirsten talks about the most important note, being present and active in the group as the leader and moderator. What is the ideal group size? For Kirsten, she likes to stay between 5,000 and 10,000 people to serve her audience and remain hands-on. Above those numbers, people don’t know each other, it’s difficult to maintain the quality of the group and it’s hard to keep spam under control. How do you approach selling to your community without being smarmy? You have to build a community in which you authentically engage and create value. Different income streams determine how you can sell to your group. Kirsten has products, coaching, courses, books, and affiliates. When doing large promotions, be mindful of scheduling. Be upfront and honest with your community about selling and promoting. Find your sales voice, plan and build a trust with your community. Have you collaborated with others to build your community? Kirsten discusses her different levels of collaboration in her communities. She emphasizes that there has to be value and trust in collaborative relationships to make it work because it’s a commitment. Keeping the lines of communication open, aligning your time and ensuring you have similar goals is also important for collaborative success. This episode covers a lot of recent talking points: the opioid crisis, government corruption, Russian interference and the press as vital arm in protecting democracy and speaking truth to power. And now that we've said that-- this sounds like a pretty serious and Debbie Downer episode. But just like in real life where we have the Royal Wedding to take us away from reality for a few minutes every day, now we have Stevie & Dimitri to lift us up when the MSEC world is going awry. Storyline one: President's son is back in rehab for heroin use-- so he's going to take out the Mexican cartels. I guess that's instead of going to family therapy. Storyline two: Henry is tracking down the mole in the Hateful Eight-- and it's not Senator Smarmy. Or is it? Storyline three: Even if you work in the State Department, your parents still question your choices. Poor Blake. Hisparents want to buy him a condo to force him to become a lobbyist or consultant. Storyline four: Ste-Mitri. World's cutest date. Binders Full of Blouses- I miss Daisy. Everyone at DOS is now wearing blue suits. EVERYONE!!!!!! Bess had good earrings in a few scenes. Corduroy-- making a comeback on nobody but Henry Stevie rocks a Cold Shoulder and she actually looked cold. To subscribe to Satellite Sisters on Apple Podcasts, click here. If you've been around for a while, you know that at Create If Writing, I'm all about growth without the use of smarmy tactics. The kind that make you feel gross in your SOUL. Who better to talk about non-smarmy marketing than Nathalie Lussier of Ambition Ally, one of my favorite companies, both in terms of products and values. In this interview, Nathalie shares about starting her company, what's working in list growth right now, and how she commits to non-smarmy marketing. This post contains affiliate links, which means if you purchase something after clicking through, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you! Links from the Show: Our Sponsor, PopUpAlly Pro from Ambition Ally This week's free training: Email Automation Non-Smarmy Marketing Nathalie recently shared a post on her blog about the dangers of income-claim marketing. This is essentially selling your product based on the success you've had in the past, not the value or service or outcomes they've provided. These numbers CAN be a good thing because we are curious. We'd like to know what goes on behind the curtain and behind the scenes. But those same numbers may not be the best way to get people to BUY. It can be a trap for both the consumer and the producer because neither may be able to replicate those numbers. The consumer may be disillusioned or dissatisfied and the business may find themselves trapped trying to go bigger or repeat the same numbers. It's not a sustainable way to grow a business. Whatever we are offering needs to solve the problem that people are having. Go back to your core values. For Ambition Ally, the values are solving problems through software. (PS- I LOVE how simple that description is. Can you describe what you do in this concise, clear way??) Tips for Non-Smarmy Marketing Start by solving problems Test and find what works before you market it (like Nathalie did with the 30-Day List Building Challenge) Consider marketing by sharing the outcome, not based on your own past successes Don't lose sight of your core values & your WHY What's Working in List-Building Right Now Exit Intent Pop-Ups - Since Google has made its update penalizing sites that are using intrusive pop-ups on mobile, it may be a good idea to consider that desktop might be next. An exit intent pop-up shows up when someone moves to click away from your site and doesn't impact the user experience while reading the post. Scroll-Based Pop-Ups - On mobile, these don't show up until someone has scrolled through 80% of your post. This keeps you Google-friendly and is great also for the reader. Content-Based Pop-Ups - Using a tool like PopUpAlly Pro, you can choose for certain pop ups to show up on certain categories of pages. This gives a more targeted invite to your email list. Mistakes That People Are Making Vanilla Calls to Action - When you run across a sign-up form that says "Sign up for my newsletter," there is no REAL incentive. Write unique copy that is inviting and clearly shares the incentive for signing up. Make It PERSONAL - Your language should speak to a person so they read it and KNOW it's speaking to them. Being specific and speaking to exactly to what people are looking for really helps. Don't miss the Idea Sanctuary, the newest video series from Nathalie Lussier helping you sift through all your ideas and refining and polishing them so you can launch them. (I just finished the first video and love it!) What is YOUR biggest non-smarmy marketing tip? Share in the comments or hop into the Facebook community so we can discuss!
Whether you love to take your own photos or not, most bloggers need to find free stock images or free photos for their blog at some point. But as a few recent horror stories have shown, how to find free and legal images for your blog is NOT so simple. Here are three things you need to know! Thanks to PopUpAlly Pro for sponsoring this episode! Find out more about PopUpAlly Pro! How to Find Free and Legal Images for Your Blog Before I get to the tips on how to find free and legal images for your blog, I want to share the horror stories. You MAY have already read these, but they are scary. The first is from Allison Puryear who shares that she was sued for using an image that she got from a stock photo site. (Language warning in case that offends you!) Her malpractice insurance saved her, but the interesting thing to note is that the lawyer she spoke to said that this is COMMON. Because photographers are doing this on purpose as a cash flow. That stinks. But it's legal. The second post is from Chrystie of Living for Naptime and she shares how several years ago, she used a photo from a Google Search (hey- a few years ago MANY of us did that ignorantly) and lost $7500. She also explains that this was an intentional practice of the photographer. You might think that this won't happen to you, but there are three key things that everyone need to consider if using an image that they did not take. Let's get into it. Three Things to Know Before Using a Photo on Your Blog Permission - if the photo is able to be used by a third party (that's you) Attribution - how you need to give credit for the image source Usage - in what ways the image may be used legally Often people stop at permission. We KNOW now that we shouldn't use an image we find on Google. But we may NOT consider the fact that we still might have to put a line underneath the image that tells where it came from and who took the photo. We also might assume that because we find a free photo or even PAY for a stock photo that we can use it on the cover of our book or sell t-shirts using the image. But PERMISSION does not mean that you can use an image without attribution or anywhere you want. You MUST consider all three. Every site for stock photos is different, but you want to look for the licensing and attribution information. It may help to email the company itself if this is unclear. This may vary from image to image on ONE site, which is the hard thing. You might get used to no attribution on a certain site because most don't require it and then not realize that ONE of the images does. Pay attention! Or use a site like Pixabay, where all images fall under the Creative Commons 0 license, where you can use it for commercial purposes with no attribution. Be sure if you are searching for Creative Commons photos that you STILL read the license, as there are several different kinds of Creative Commons licenses. Be sure that even if you are PAYING for a photo, you read the fine print. You want to be as careful as possible, especially considering that some photographers are intentionally using this as a means to make money. Smarmy, but they can. WE need to be the ones doing our due diligence on our photos!

Her sacrifice wasn't in vain: There were enchiladas involved (4 Hermanos 5239 N. Central Ave, Chicago, IL, 60630). Regarding radio work vs. TV work: "It is such a different talent, and I respect DJs a lot more than I ever have." *Norwood Park housewives yammering on about nothing at all
