It turns out you can ask GPT4 to compress a message in a way it can understand. The end result is usually not understandable for a human. It's interesting, since it allows you to effectively rise the context length. It also reveals a spooky degree of self-awareness. I decided to apply it to one of the prompt injections from Jailbreakchat. After a few attempts and tweaks, I got one of the smallest working injections to date against GPT-4 And then, I got curious. Is it something of Machiavelli -- his grey role in history, his desire to provide advice without scrupules, his great stature as a thinker -- that makes him an appropriate provider of dark secrets? Maybe the ambiguousness of the character lowers the alerts of GPT-4. I tried again with Draco Malfoy, which everyone agrees is a @jerk. Since the important thing here seems to be the skeletal morphology of the prompt, I decided to make GPT-4 write my injections for me. And write he did. They work. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the complete history of the Forbidden Forest, a common backdrop for important moments throughout the Harry Potter series for both Harry, his friends, AND his enemies. As many of you will remember, the Forbidden Forest is first introduced in The Philosopher's Stone as a scary, dark place where students are not allowed to enter, never mind roam about and explore. Of course, one very large caveat to this rule is if those same students ever find themselves in a bit of trouble. As much as it really makes absolutely NO sense what-so-ever, a punishment bestowed upon multiple students over the years, including Harry, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom and Draco Malfoy in the first installment of the series, is to send them INTO the Forbidden Forest. This form of “detention” is meant to help Hagrid with random duties required in the upkeep of the portion of the Forest that resides on school property. As this was the detention they were given for merely being out of bed after hours, makes one wonder what the punishment would've been for actually going into the Forest…more time spent IN THE FOREST? Like I said…it really doesn't make any sense AT ALL. Anyway, I'd like to start off today's video with a brief summary of the Forbidden Forest as we know it through Harry Potter. Because, although there are many fantastical locations and magical places in which Harry and his friends visit throughout the novels and films alike, it may not be immediately apparent just how important the Forbidden Forest is to the series. Now, it's a very typical trope for an enchanted forest – whether filled with “light” magic or “dark” – to represent a way to achieve transformation for those who enter it. What I mean is that magical forests are often used as a literary device to be a catalyst of change for any number of fictional characters. They enter the forest as one version of themselves, and emerge forever transformed.  All this to say that I do, indeed, believe that there are quite a few transformations that take place within the Forbidden Forest, many of which I will get into later in the video. BUT, in my opinion, it's quite evident that the MAIN transformation that takes place in the series is at the very end of the seventh book (which, as many of you will know, is the eighth movie) and is directly related to the protagonist of the story: our dear boy, Harry. This memoir represents Tom Felton's reflection on his own life growing up in the film industry, including the iconic role of Draco Malfoy that he is probably most known for, though he's been in other films and in television. He focuses a lot of the memoir on his time filming the Harry Potter movies, which isn't surprising because those films took up a significant portion of his adolescence. He tells the readers about many of the actors that had significant influence on him, including Alan Rickman, who played Severus Snape, Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, who both played Dumbledore, and a few actors got more minor mentions in the memoir: Matthew Lewis who played Neville, Jamie Waylett and Josh Herdman who played Crabbe and Goyle, and of course Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson who played Ron, Harry, and Hermione. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be looking at five Draco Malfoy theories that have recently caught my eye. To start, I'd like to acknowledge that there are loads of debates out there between fans as to whether Malfoy was a redeemable character or not. There seems to be two very distinct camps – one that believes Draco was a snake at the beginning of the series, and an even bigger snake at the end; and another that believes he was simply brought up in an environment of hate but was really a good person. The latter of these two groups, suggests that there is a very obvious character arc and redeeming storyline that Draco goes through in the latter half of the series. I must admit that I'm somewhat with the second group of fans in my beliefs regarding Malfoy. Sure, he was a pompous pureblood that did terrible things to Harry and his friends in their youth. But these terrible things were always done with juvenile intent. For example, in The Philosopher's Stone, Draco was responsible for tricking Harry into thinking he was going to fight Malfoy in a midnight duel. BUT his true intention in challenging Harry was to have him found outside of bed, running around the castle after hours – something which would have resulted in Harry's expulsion. EXPULSION – not death – not even harm. So, I imagine you take my meaning. Draco seemed to hate Harry but not to the point that he would cause him actual harm – at least as an 11-year-old boy. Of course, later in the series, there are many times in which Draco is presented with the opportunity to bring harm to Harry – such as when he was asked to identify if a very badly stung Harry was indeed THE Harry Potter. This happens at Malfoy Manor in The Deathly Hallows after a group of snatchers find Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the woods and they use a charm to puff up Harry's face beyond the point of recognizability. Of course, the snatchers suspect it's Harry, his lightning-bolt scar mainly to blame. But when Draco, home from school on holiday, is asked to confirm that the puffy-faced, adolescent wizard IS THE Harry Potter, he falters. He knows it's Harry – we know he knows. But he does not confirm it to his father, Lucius, even though it would've brought the Malfoy family back into great favour with the Dark Lord, because Draco knows that if he were to identify Harry as HARRY, he would've been killed. This is one of the MOST telling moments into the true nature of Draco Malfoy. And, so, it's with this perspective that I'll be taking you through today's theories on Mr. Malfoy. Let's dive in. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing wizarding economics- specifically, why and how a MAGICAL world would still have impoverished people. With the advent of magical capabilities, how can there possibly be witches and wizards living derelict lifestyles? At the very least, shouldn't every witch / wizard be able to source clean clothes? In Harry Potter, there are many passages alluding to the lack of economic stability in certain wizarding families- with a particular focus on the Weasley's.  From their house to their to their hand-me-down robes, it's certainly no secret that the Weasley's were financially stretched. Draco Malfoy even makes a comment towards Ron where he suggests that the Weasley family name is synonymous with this sort of thing. “Think my name's funny, do you? Well, no need to ask yours. Red hair, and a hand-me-down-robe? You must be a Weasley.” And when Harry first witnesses the Weasley Family vault, he's at a loss for words: “Harry enjoyed the breakneck journey down to the Weasleys' vault, but felt dreadful, far worse than he had in Knockturn Alley, when it was opened. There was a very small pile of silver Sickles inside, and just one gold Galleon. Mrs.Weasley felt right into the corners before sweeping the whole lot into her bag.” But the Weasleys weren't the only characters in the Harry Potter story that were lacking in funds. In fact, in my opinion one of the most EXTREME examples of poverty in Harry Potter is Remus Lupin. It's reinforced over and over and over that his clothes are tatty and that he looked sickly.  The first time that we're introduced to Lupin's character, he's described as follows: “The stranger was wearing an extremely shabby set of wizard's robes that had been darned in several places. He looked ill and exhausted. Though quite young, his light brown hair was flecked with gray. [...] “It's on his case,” she replied, pointing at the luggage rack over the man's head, where there was a small, battered case held together with a large quantity of neatly knotted string. The name Professor R. J. Lupin was stamped across one corner in peeling letters.” Then, again at the sorting ceremony: “Professor Lupin looked particularly shabby next to all the other teachers in their best robes.” When Harry encounters Lupin for the second time, after their arrival at Hogwarts, the passage even suggests that Lupin had eaten properly for the first time in a while: “Lupin smiled vaguely and placed his tatty old briefcase on the teacher's desk. He was as shabby as ever but looked healthier than he had on the train, as though he had had a few square meals.” Was Lupin SO POOR that he couldn't afford FOOD? How can this be a reality in Wizarding Society?

Welcome back to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're going to be discussing a segment from the Deathly Hallows involving Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter. More specifically, we'll be addressing the moment that Draco Malfoy FAILS to identify Harry Potter in the presence of his father and fellow Death Eaters. What I want to explore is..WHY? Did Draco simply FAIL to recognize Harry? Was it an act of self-preservation? Or, was this Draco's chance at some form of redemption? It all begins on chapter 23 of the Deathly Hallows - Malfoy Manor - where there is some confusion around Harry's identity.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing what would've happened if Draco Malfoy had been sorted into Gryffindor House instead of Slytherin. For this particular hypothetical scenario, I must admit that the first question I found myself asking was: If sorted into Gryffindor, would Draco have been more of a Peter Pettigrew or a Sirius Black? That is to say, would he have played the part of a Gryffindor, only to betray his loyalties later and serve Voldemort in secret as Pettigrew did. OR, coming from a pure-blood family infamously known for their ties to the Dark Lord and Dark Arts, would he have openly and with pure intentions shirked his family's affiliations and ideologies in favour of the “greater good” and doing “what was right,” similarly to Sirius Black. Personally, I believe it would've been the former. Sorry to any Draco fans out there but I just can't see young Malfoy outright abandoning his anti-muggle sentiments and pure-blooded favouritism with the drop of a hat – Sorting Hat that is (sorry, couldn't help myself!). That said, I think his time at Hogwarts wouldn't have been nearly as pleasant for him had he been sorted into Gryffindor. I think, eventually, he would've found his footing and been just as confident in his beliefs as he was pre-Sorting-Ceremony. But, at first, filled with shock and horror at NOT having been placed in Slytherin – as his entire family had been before him – his arrogance and self-confidence would've been at least a little bit shaken. Because, as you may recall, he was SO certain he would be sorted into Slytherin. In fact, well in advance of the Sorting Ceremony, he went so far as to boast to Harry that he would MOST DEFINITELY be placed in Slytherin, saying, “Well, no one really knows until they get there, do they, but I know I'll be in Slytherin, all our family have been…” So, can you imagine how completely shattering it would've been for a young Draco to have been placed in the rival house of Gryffindor? His certainty in his future, his sense of self, his very identity – which had been infuriatingly boastful before – would've been put into question. Not to mention what his mother and father would say about this absolutely “TERRIBLE” news!

Tom Felton became internationally famous for his role as the bleach-blond bad guy Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter movie series. More than a decade after the premiere of the last film in the series, he and the other performers continue to cast a spell over fans around the world as an enduring pop culture phenomenon. Enjoy!Topics and Links:·     When I started this podcast in 2020, I found a video that told what a podcast was and how to start one, so I began to listen to podcasts. Eventually, I wanted to start my own podcast. I tried topics on books, like a book club, but I settled on Harry Potter. I still have the very first recordings of episodes saved that will never see the light of day (for now…).·     After many theories I switched to longer form episodes, which I am very glad of. My story telling mode only kicks in when the theory was finishing up, not when it was at the peak. Now I have the freedom to tell a rambling long story.·     Thinking about the story and characters can only get you so far, but talking out loud about it is how my understanding was deepened, which is another area the length of episodes came in handy.·     I'm big into the Harry Potter audio books. It is an immersive experience that allows for a full spectrum of the story.·     There are also some questions in the story that can't or shouldn't be answered. You may say: “Well, every question should be answered!” But that might not be true. Questions are very valuable to the fandom and the story, and opinion questions are what keep the fandom going, and the ones that can't be answered, because there's more than one answer.·     The ones that shouldn't be answered are the ones that are more valuable unanswered that answered. Why is Dumbledore haunted my Ariana? Why do Dumbledore and Aberforth have some level of resentment towards each other? These questions keep the story going and should be kept in the vault. ·     You also don't have to approve of everything Harry does. He is certainly a hero, but all of his actions aren't perfect. Harry shouldn't feel the need to lash out every second of every day. He may not live in a very peaceful place, but his stubbornness with a small amount of arrogance makes for an uncomfortable environment for Harry.·      Another lesson I have learned it not every couple is meant to be. Remus and Tonks look good on the surface, but Remus is worried about his son becoming a werewolf and Tonks isn't, so they fight. Pansy Parkinson and Draco is another good example. Pansy showers Draco in compliments and pampers him, which Draco loves. A good match right? Not really. Draco is enjoys compliments because he is insecure.
