Was macht man da, wenn man gemeine Kinder trifft? Und wie können Lehrer*innen nachts schlafen bei so ner Riesenverantwortung?! Respekt!) (Sorry, dass ich, Sophia, da so abgeschweift bin, aber das hat mich mega belastet.)So. Wo waren wir? Ach so. Malfoy? Chapter 29 - The Lost Diadem“Alecto, Amycus's sister, teaches Muggle Studies, which is compulsory for everyone. We've all got to listen to her explain how Muggles are like animals, stupid and dirty, and how they drove wizards into hiding by being vicious toward them, and how the natural order is being reestablished. I got this one,” he indicated another slash to his face, “for asking her how much Muggle blood she and her brother have got.”Q1 - Obviously not entertaining Death Eater ideas, but do they have any kind of point?Thing was,” he faced them, and Harry was astonished to see that he was grinning, “they bit off a bit more than they could chew with Gran. Little old witch living alone, they probably thought they didn't need to send anyone particularly powerful. Anyway,” Neville laughed, “Dawlish is still in St. Mungo's and Gran's on the run. She sent me a letter,” he clapped a hand to the breast pocket of his robes, “telling me she was proud of me, that I'm my parents' son, and to keep it up.”Q2 - What do you think of all the students rebelling at Hogwarts?Q3 - What do you think about the Room of Requirement hideout?“There's something important we need to do —” “What is it?” “I — I can't tell you.” There was a ripple of muttering at this: Neville's brows contracted. “Why can't you tell us? It's something to do with fighting YouKnow-Who, right?” “Well, yeah —” “Then we'll help you.” The other members of Dumbledore's Army were nodding, some enthusiastically, others solemnly. A couple of them rose from their chairs to demonstrate their willingness for immediate action. “You don't understand.” Harry seemed to have said that a lot in the last few hours. “We — we can't tell you. We've got to do it — alone.” Q4 - Is it good they're being so secretive? Harry looked from Ron to Hermione, who murmured, “I think Ron's right. We don't even know what we're looking for, we need them.” And when Harry looked unconvinced, “You don't have to do everything alone, Harry.” Q5 - Should they tell?Q6 - Where is the Diadem?“Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?” “Hmm . . . What do you think, Harry?” said Luna, looking thoughtful. “What? Isn't there just a password?” “Oh no, you've got to answer a question,” said Luna. “What if you get it wrong?” “Well, you have to wait for somebody who gets it right,” said Luna. “That way you learn, you see?” “Yeah . . . Trouble is, we can't really afford to wait for anyone else, Luna.” “No, I see what you mean,” said Luna seriously. “Well then, I think the answer is that a circle has no beginning.” Q7 - What do you think about the Ravenclaw tower's entrance?Harry stepped out from under the Cloak and climbed up onto Ravenclaw's plinth to read them. “‘Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure.'” “Which makes you pretty skint, witless,” said a cackling voice. Harry whirled around, slipped off the plinth, and landed on the floor. The sloping-shouldered figure of Alecto Carrow was standing before him, and even as Harry raised his wand, she pressed a stubby forefinger to the skull and snake branded on her forearm. Chapter 30 - The Sacking of Severus Snape“We can push it off on the kids,” said Amycus, his piglike face suddenly crafty. “Yeah, that's what we'll do. We'll say Alecto was ambushed by the kids, them kids up there” — he looked up at the starry ceiling toward the dormitories — “and we'll say they forced her to press her Mark, and that's why he got a false alarm. . . . He can punish them. Couple of kids more or less, what's the difference?” “Only the difference between truth and lies, courage and cowardice,” said Professor McGonagall, who had turned pale, “a difference, in short, which you and your sister seem unable to appreciate. But let me make one thing very clear. You are not going to pass off your many ineptitudes on the students of Hogwarts. I shall not permit it.” Q1 - Thoughts on McGongall and the Carrows?“It's not a case of what you'll permit, Minerva McGonagall. Your time's over. It's us what's in charge here now, and you'll back me up or you'll pay the price.” And he spat in her face. Harry pulled the Cloak off himself, raised his wand, and said, “You shouldn't have done that.” As Amycus spun around, Harry shouted, “Crucio!” Q2 - Should Harry have used crucio?“Time's running out, Voldemort's getting nearer. Professor, I'm acting on Dumbledore's orders, I must find what he wanted me to find! But we've got to get the students out while I'm searching the castle — it's me Voldemort wants, but he won't care about killing a few more or less, not now —” not now he knows I'm attacking Horcruxes, Harry finished the sentence in his head. “You're acting on Dumbledore's orders?” she repeated with a look of dawning wonder. Then she drew herself up to her fullest height. “We shall secure the school against He-Who-Must-Not-BeNamed while you search for this — this object.” “Is that possible?” “I think so,” said Professor McGonagall dryly, “we teachers are rather good at magic, you know. I am sure we will be able to hold him off for a while if we all put our best efforts into it. Of course, something will have to be done about Professor Snape —” She marched toward the door, and as she did so she raised her wand. From the tip burst three silver cats with spectacle markings around their eyes. The Patronuses ran sleekly ahead, filling the spiral staircase with silvery light, as Professor McGonagall, Harry, and Luna hurried back down.Q3 - What was the doe Patronus?“No, he's not dead,” said McGonagall bitterly. “Unlike Dumbledore, he was still carrying a wand . . . and he seems to have learned a few tricks from his master.” With a tingle of horror, Harry saw in the distance a huge, batlike shape flying through the darkness toward the perimeter wall. There were heavy footfalls behind them, and a great deal of puffing: Slughorn had just caught up.Q4 - Is Snape as dark as Voldemort?“My word,” he puffed, pale and sweaty, his walrus mustache aquiver. “What a to-do! I'm not at all sure whether this is wise, Minerva. He is bound to find a way in, you know, and anyone who has tried to delay him will be in most grievous peril —” “I shall expect you and the Slytherins in the Great Hall in twenty minutes, also,” said Professor McGonagall. “If you wish to leave with your students, we shall not stop you. But if any of you attempt to sabotage our resistance or take up arms against us within this castle, then, Horace, we duel to kill.” “Minerva!” he said, aghast. “The time has come for Slytherin House to decide upon its loyalties,” interrupted Professor McGonagall. “Go and wake your students, Horace.”Q5 - Do we trust Slughorn? There was a scuffling and a great thump: Someone else had clambered out of the tunnel, overbalanced slightly, and fallen. He pulled himself up on the nearest chair, looked around through lopsided horn-rimmed glasses, and said, “Am I too late? Has it started? I only just found out, so I — I —” Percy spluttered into silence. Evidently he had not expected to run into most of his family.Q6 - Do we trust Percy? How do you like him coming back at this moment?“I was a fool!” Percy roared, so loudly that Lupin nearly dropped his photograph. “I was an idiot, I was a pompous prat, I was a — a —” “Ministry-loving, family-disowning, power-hungry moron,” said Fred. Percy swallowed. “Yes, I was!” “Well, you can't say fairer than that,” said Fred, holding out his hand to Percy. Mrs. Weasley burst into tears. She ran forward, pushed Fred aside, and pulled Percy into a strangling hug, while he patted her on the back, his eyes on his father. “Where's Ron?” asked Harry. “Where's Hermione?” “They must have gone up to the Great Hall already,” Mr. Weasley called over his shoulder. “I didn't see them pass me,” said Harry. “They said something about a bathroom,” said Ginny, “not long after you left.” “A bathroom?” Q7 - Where did they go?Chapter 31 - The Battle of HogwartsQ1 - What did you think of the students staying back to help and do they stand any chance against Voldemort and the Elder wand?“Well, help me, then!” Her composure was slipping. “It — it is not a question of —” she stammered. “My mother's diadem —” “Your mother's?” She looked angry with herself. “When I lived,” she said stiffly, “I was Helena Ravenclaw.” “You're her daughter? But then, you must know what happened to it!” Q2 - What do you think about the Grey Lady?“He tracked me to the forest where I was hiding. When I refused to return with him, he became violent. The Baron was always a hot-tempered man. Furious at my refusal, jealous of my freedom, he stabbed me.” “The Baron? You mean — ?” “The Bloody Baron, yes,” said the Gray Lady, and she lifted aside the cloak she wore to reveal a single dark wound in her white chest. “When he saw what he had done, he was overcome with remorse. He took the weapon that had claimed my life, and used it to kill himself. All these centuries later, he wears his chains as an act of penitence . . . as he should,” she added bitterly. Q3 - What do you think of her story?“He hid the diadem in the castle, the night he asked Dumbledore to let him teach!” said Harry. Saying it out loud enabled him to make sense of it all. “He must've hidden the diadem on his way up to, or down from, Dumbledore's office! But it was still worth trying to get the job — then he might've got the chance to nick Gryffindor's sword as well — thank you, thanks!” Q4 - Do you understand why he applied for the job now?“— attacking because they haven't handed you over, yeah,” said Aberforth, “I'm not deaf, the whole of Hogsmeade heard him. And it never occurred to any of you to keep a few Slytherins hostage? There are kids of Death Eaters you've just sent to safety. Wouldn't it have been a bit smarter to keep 'em here?” Q5 - Would you have kept a few Slytherins captive?“I was the last to come through,” said Mrs. Longbottom. “I sealed it, I think it unwise to leave it open now Aberforth has left his pub. Have you seen my grandson?” “He's fighting,” said Harry. “Naturally,” said the old lady proudly. “Excuse me, I must go and assist him.” With surprising speed she trotted off toward the stone steps. Q6 - Understand why I love Neville so much now?Q7 - What do you think of Crabbe and Goyle and Malfoy? And he saw them: Malfoy with his arms around the unconscious Goyle, the pair of them perched on a fragile tower of charred desks, and Harry dived. Malfoy saw him coming and raised one arm, but even as Harry grasped it he knew at once that it was no good: Goyle was too heavy and Malfoy's hand, covered in sweat, slid instantly out of Harry's — “IF WE DIE FOR THEM, I'LL KILL YOU, HARRY!” roared Ron's voice, and, as a great flaming chimaera bore down upon them, he and Hermione dragged Goyle onto their broom and rose, rolling and pitching, into the air once more as Malfoy clambered up behind Harry.Q8 - What do you think about Harry saving them and Crabbe dying? He pulled the diadem from his wrist and held it up. It was still hot, blackened with soot, but as he looked at it closely he was just able to make out the tiny words etched upon it: Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure. A bloodlike substance, dark and tarry, seemed to be leaking from the diadem. Suddenly Harry felt the thing vibrate violently, then break apart in his hands, and as it did so, he thought he heard the faintest, most distant scream of pain, echoing not from the grounds or the castle, but from the thing that had just fragmented in his fingers.Q9 - They're getting close…Nagini is only left? Then he heard a terrible cry that pulled at his insides, that expressed agony of a kind neither flame nor curse could cause, and he stood up, swaying, more frightened than he had been that day, more frightened, perhaps, than he had been in his life. . . . And Hermione was struggling to her feet in the wreckage, and three redheaded men were grouped on the ground where the wall had blasted apart. Harry grabbed Hermione's hand as they staggered and stumbled over stone and wood. “No — no — no!” someone was shouting. “No! Fred! No!” And Percy was shaking his brother, and Ron was kneeling beside them, and Fred's eyes stared without seeing, the ghost of his last laugh still etched upon his face. Q10 - RIP Fred…Chapter 32 - The Elder WandShe had pulled Ron behind a tapestry: They seemed to be wrestling together, and for one mad second Harry thought that they were embracing again; then he saw that Hermione was trying to restrain Ron, to stop him running after Percy. “Listen to me — LISTEN, RON!” “I wanna help — I wanna kill Death Eaters —” His face was contorted, smeared with dust and smoke, and he was shaking with rage and grief. “Ron, we're the only ones who can end it! Please — Ron — we need the snake, we've got to kill the snake!” said Hermione. But Harry knew how Ron felt: Pursuing another Horcrux could not bring the satisfaction of revenge; he too wanted to fight, to punish them, the people who had killed Fred, and he wanted to find the other Weasleys, and above all make sure, make quite sure, that Ginny was not — but he could not permit that idea to form in his mind — Q1 - What do you think of Ron's anger and grief here?Q2 - Is Hagrid dead?“How — how're we going to get in?” panted Ron. “I can — see the place — if we just had — Crookshanks again —” “Crookshanks?” wheezed Hermione, bent double, clutching her chest. “Are you a wizard, or what?”Q3 - Do you remember where you first read this line?“. . . my Lord, their resistance is crumbling —” “— and it is doing so without your help,” said Voldemort in his high, clear voice. “Skilled wizard though you are, Severus, I do not think you will make much difference now. We are almost there . . . almost.” “Let me find the boy. Let me bring you Potter. I know I can find him, my Lord. Please.” Snape did not speak. “Perhaps you already know it? You are a clever man, after all, Severus. You have been a good and faithful servant, and I regret what must happen.” “My Lord —” “The Elder Wand cannot serve me properly, Severus, because I am not its true master. The Elder Wand belongs to the wizard who killed its last owner. You killed Albus Dumbledore. While you live, Severus, the Elder Wand cannot be truly mine.” “My Lord!” Snape protested, raising his wand. “It cannot be any other way,” said Voldemort. “I must master the wand, Severus. Master the wand, and I master Potter at last.” And Voldemort swiped the air with the Elder Wand. It did nothing to Snape, who for a split second seemed to think he had been reprieved: But then Voldemort's intention became clear. The snake's cage was rolling through the air, and before Snape could do anything more than yell, it had encased him, head and shoulders, and Voldemort spoke in Parseltongue. “Kill.” Q4 - Initially you were happy Snape died…has your tune changed?Harry took off the Invisibility Cloak and looked down upon the man he hated, whose widening black eyes found Harry as he tried to speak. Harry bent over him, and Snape seized the front of his robes and pulled him close. A terrible rasping, gurgling noise issued from Snape's throat. “Take . . . it. . . . Take . . . it. . . .” Something more than blood was leaking from Snape. Silvery blue, neither gas nor liquid, it gushed from his mouth and his ears and his eyes, and Harry knew what it was, but did not know what to do — A flask, conjured from thin air, was thrust into his shaking hands by Hermione. Harry lifted the silvery substance into it with his wand. When the flask was full to the brim, and Snape looked as though there was no blood left in him, his grip on Harry's robes slackened. “Look . . . at . . . me. . . .” he whispered. The green eyes found the black, but after a second, something in the depths of the dark pair seemed to vanish, leaving them fixed, blank, and empty. The hand holding Harry thudded to the floor, and Snape moved no more. Q6 - What do you think?Q7 - Voldemort owns the Elder Wand now?

主播:Flora(中国)+ Erin(美国) 歌曲:Double Trouble我们今天来聊聊最近在全球重映的魔法题材系列电影——Harry Potter。It has captured the hearts of millions worldwide (俘获了全世界数百万人的心). Even now, with the re-release (重映) of the films, fans—both old and new—are flocking to (涌向) cinemas to relive the magic (重温). 前几天Flora订票的时候发现Harry Potter的放映厅位置爆满。You really had to scramble to get the best seats (抢最佳观影位置) for the movie! It's the same thing in the U.S. Erin knows a lot of people would seat in theaters for hours on end, watch like an entire marathon of the movies (很多人会在影院里一坐就是几个小时,就像看一整部马拉松式的电影一样). So Today, we're breaking down the top reasons (首要原因) why Harry Potter remains so beloved.01. The relatability of its characters 角色的亲和力They're real, flawed (有缺点的), and far from perfect. 让人觉得没有距离感。In fact, there are actually a lot of movies and TV shows that simplify (简化) the characters and their emotions. We see them deal with everyday problems, especially as teens and young adults. They aren't portrayed (被描绘) as overly mature (过度成熟)—they are as messy and unsure as we were at their age.And it perfectly reflects the everyday challenges that we face as teenagers. From Harry's insecurities (不安全感) to Hermione's perfectionism (完美主义) and Ron's feelings of inadequacy (不自信), these are issues we've all faced.相信这些是大家经历过的事情,所以我们很容易resonate with them(与他们产生共鸣)。That authenticity (真实性) makes us connect with them on a personal level.02. A magical world intertwined with reality 与现实交织的魔法世界Another reason the series feels so magical is how the wizarding world (魔法世界) is intertwined (交织) with our own. It's not some completely distant, far-off place. Instead, the magical world runs parallel to our reality (与现实平行).This makes a lot of kids believe in Hogwarts (霍格沃茨) even more. 所以很多孩子到了11岁的时候会期待收到来自Hogwarts的录取通知。It seems like magic could actually be hidden around the corner. You can almost imagine bumping into (撞见) a wizard in Diagon Alley (对角巷) or stumbling onto (偶然发现) Platform 9¾ (9¾站台) at King's Cross (国王十字). That connection makes it feel closer and more real.03. Distinctive school divisions 独特的学院划分In fact, Hogwarts itself is another huge draw (巨大的吸引力). 他们没有按照教授的内容去划分学院,而是按照学生的traits and characteristics(特征和特性)。It is unlike traditional magical schools at all.Gryffindors (格兰芬多) are known for their bravery, Ravenclaws (拉文克劳) for their intelligence, Hufflepuffs (赫奇帕奇) for their loyalty, and Slytherins (斯莱特林) for their ambition. It's not just about learning magic—it's about belonging to a group that reflects who you are.找到一个属于你的群体会帮你建立a sense of belonging(一种归属感)。Wherever in Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin, you will all find a place where you belong.Fans love imagining which house they'd be sorted into (被分到哪个学院). It's more than (不仅仅是) just a school; it's a home where your values and traits are recognized and celebrated (这是一个让你的价值观和特质得到认可和庆祝的家). Anywhere on the internet that mentions Harry Potter, you see people discussing what house they are.Flora did a Personality Test-Which Hogwarts House Are You in (你在哪个霍格沃茨的学院里)?Basically, you need to do some multiple choice questions (多选题) where you'll get points for each option, and at the end you'll need to add up the points. 一个分数区间会对应一个霍格沃茨学院。大家如果对这个测试感兴趣也可以去搜一下:Which Hogwarts House Are You in? If you're interested in MBTI 16 personality, you must be very much the same with this one.04. The stunning visuals 令人惊叹不已的视觉效果Like Gloucester Cathedral (格洛斯特大教堂——位于英格兰南部的格洛斯特郡) and Alnwick Castle(阿尼克城堡——位于英格兰东北部的诺森伯兰郡), it makes them even more special. These places are not just CGI (computer-generated imagery)—they have history, depth, and character. This makes them more relatable and appealing. 05. Memorable quotes 令人难忘的名言It's like magic brought to life (魔法被赋予了生命). Harry Potter最powerful(强大)也是最伟大的地方就在于它教会我们的life lessons(人生教训),it's about love, friendship, and loyalty(爱、友谊和忠诚)。These values that transcend gender, race, and age.和我们大多数人一样,他们一开始只是nobodies(无名小卒)。Over the course of the series (在这个系列中), they grow, face incredible challenges, and mature in ways we can all admire. 也许这才是我们普通人崇拜的英雄。It's a story of resilience (坚韧) and growth. No matter who you are or where you start, you can become something greater through courage, friendship, and perseverance. Dumbledore was a SLYTHERIN (NOT a Gryffindor) - Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing the many reasons why Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, famed Headmaster of Hogwarts and former Gryffindor student, may have been more well-suited to Slytherin House. As fans, soon after Harry Potter received his letter of acceptance and we were first introduced to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, we also learned about the magical institution's four founding members and how they decided that the student population would always be divided into four houses, which would represent the characteristics and traits most valued by each of those founding members. As the majority of you watching this will already know, the four founding members of Hogwarts School were Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin, with the corresponding houses being named after each of their surnames. And while later instalments of the series eventually focused on students from the houses of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, the beginning of Harry Potter certainly had a lot more emphasis on Gryffindor and Slytherin. What's more, there was a very obvious dichotomy presented between the two, with all of the protagonist characters—aka the “good guys”—being Gryffindors, and all of the antagonists—or “bad guys”—being Slytherins. From Harry to the compassionate and friendly Weasley family who helped him find Platform 9 and ¾, and the world-famous Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, everyone who was presented as good and heroic in the first few years of Harry's time at Hogwarts was a current or former Gryffindor student. By contrast, each of the BADDIES that we met during Harry's first few years were all Slytherins, including the bully Draco Malfoy, the cruel Professor Snape and, of course, the most evil wizard to have ever lived—Lord Voldemort. And who could forget what Hagrid told Harry before he entered his first year at Hogwarts: Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the Philosopher's Stone, Hagrid famously remarked that “There's not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin.”.  But..There are a few big issues with this statement. First of all, it's factually incorrect. While the vast majority of the dark witches and wizards in the wizarding world were indeed at one time Slytherin students, it certainly wasn't all of them.  Second of all, many have interpreted Hagrid's statement to mean: ‘all Slytherins will become evil', when what Hagrid really meant was that ‘all bad witches and wizards ORIGINATED from Slytherin. Which is..Also not true. I will admit that when you think about all of the evil in the Wizarding World, it is certainly hard to distance your mind from the green and silver house. However, in reality there are numerous other examples of BAD wizards that came from well...ALL of the other houses. Think about it. We had Pettigrew from Gryffindor. We had Quirrell from Ravenclaw. And from Hufflepuff we had….The subject of today's video! A dark wizard SO EVIL that many SLYTHERIN wizards PALE in comparison. Q1 - What did you think of the students staying back to help and do they stand any chance against Voldemort and the Elder wand?“Well, help me, then!” Her composure was slipping. Q10 - RIP Fred…

“They said something about a bathroom,” said Ginny, “not long after you left.” “A bathroom?” Q7 - Where did they go?

Welcome Potterheads to our first Disney Harry Potter mash-up! From Disney Princesses to Villains, we work through a list of characters from Buzzfeed to see if our Hogwarts House sorting matches those of the internet. Vote below as you listen along! In which Hogwarts House do you think these Disney characters belong? Ariel is a Slytherin Look, not all Slytherins are bad despite Ron teaching that to Harry in book one. Ariel is ambitious and driven. She knows what she wants, even if it is impossible. And figures out a way to get legs and meet Eric. Mermaids and humans? Not a thing…until Ariel makes it happen! Hades is a Slytherin Being one of the Big Three on Olympus is just not quite enough for Hades. He may not always have the best help but his ambition and never-say-die (ha) drive is very Slytherin-esq. Maleficent is a Gryffindor Maleficent believes she has been wronged. And to right that wrong she is going to do what she feels is right. AKA curse the kingdom's baby princess…? Hey, we aren't saying we agree. But she is doing what she believes is right. So it's Gryffindor for us. Flynn Rider is a Ravenclaw/Slytherin For us, it depends on where we are in Flynn's story. At the end, one of us sees Flynn as a knowledgeable and witty character who is a realist looking at the facts. The other one sees him throughout the movies as resourceful and driven to get the dream he wants the most. You decide. Mulan is a Hufflepuff Everything she does is for others. She puts her dad's safety ahead of her own and leads with her heart wherever she goes. She may not be what we all think a Hufflepuff is (patient and nice) but her heart is full of kindness for others, through and through. Hans is a Slytherin I mean, he pretends to love Anna and then tries to kill her to get his own kingdom so he can be King. Ambition and drive? Check and check. Belle is a Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff Belle does sacrifice herself for her dad, just like Mulan. And gives Beast a fair chance, despite his beastliness. But she is also fiercely intelligent and loves to learn. You tell us… Governor Ratcliffe is a Slytherin “Mine, Mine, Mine” is the most Slytherin-ish villain song in all of Disney. Enough said. Tiana is a Slytherin This girl knows what she wants and is willing to work two jobs and save every penny to get it. Driven and ambitious are her middle name. “Almost There” is the Disney Princess song for Slytherins! We will send out the second half of polls next month, so keep your Sorting Hats ready to vote! Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're discussing 5 famous Slytherin witches and wizards who went on to make history. Within the wizarding world, anyone referred to as simply a “Slytherin” is a current or former student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who was sorted into Slytherin House upon their arrival at the school.  The House of Slytherin is representative of one of the four founding members of Hogwarts, Salazar Slytherin, a powerful wizard who believed in magical blood purity and argued that only pureblood families should be offered enrollment at the school. As such, many people associate Slytherins with cruel, dark or simply prejudiced witches or wizards. Unfortunately, this view of Slytherins is further supported by the sheer number of graduates who went on to become entangled with Dark Magic. BUT, it's important to note that that's NOT ALWAYS the case. There are lots of *quote* good witches and wizards who have been former Slytherin students, some of which we'll touch on in today's video. So, with that in mind, let's take a look at five famous Slytherins who made history. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

For this discussion I'm joined by Dan from Hogwarts: A Podcast (https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hogwarts-a-podcast). This is the chapter where Trelawney predicts Harry's death in Divination class because she sees a big black dog aka the Grim in a teacup. Then Hagrid makes Harry ride a Hippogriff named Buckbeak after he successfully pets him in Care of Magical Creatures. Unfortunately, Draco Malfoy isn't a fan of Harry getting attention or in paying attention to Hagrid's warnings. So, he insults Buckbeak and gets clawed up as a result of his actions. And who could forget what Hagrid told Harry before he entered his first year at Hogwarts: “There's not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin. You-Know-Who was one.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Draco Malfoy's lackeys Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle and whether or not they're DEATH EATERS. We first see these two goons pop-up right near the beginning of the Harry Potter story, standing there, dim-witted as ever, behind their gang leader Draco. While many friendships blossomed within the walls of Hogwarts, particularly in the first few years, It seems as though both Crabbe and Goyle were friends with Draco before their Hogwarts days- a fact that I'm sure can be attributed to their ties in the pure-blooded wizard community.  Crabbe and Goyle, proud Slytherins, certainly made the lives of many Hogwarts students miserable during their time at the school. With Draco at the helm of their gang, they even made a special point of making it their absolute priority to bully the famous trio- Harry, Ron and Hermione.  And in their later years, just a year or two shy from Hogwarts graduation, they took things a step further, transcending the title of traditional bully and instead becoming what could only be aptly described as full-blown criminals.  But one thing I've also wondered is whether or not Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle were teenage Death Eaters, just like their leader Draco Malfoy was. Were they rotten to the core like so many other dark wizards in the wizarding world? Or, was there salvation for these two boys?

Today we're RANKING the most POWERFUL Pure-Bloods in Harry Potter. At this stage I've RANKED the most powerful Slytherins, Gryffindors, Hufflepuffs, Ravenclaws, Aurors, Death Eaters, Dumbledore's Army members, Order of the Phoenix members and more. But what I haven't done yet is rank the most powerful PURE BLOOD wizards in the wizarding world.  Blood status is one of the most controversial aspects of the wizarding world- a concept in which wizarding families can be distinguished by the level of magically-endowed family members. Generally speaking, people are slotted in to one of the following categories: Pure-blood, half-blood or muggle. We're introduced to quite a few characters in the Harry Potter story that come from these pure blood lines, and they certainly aren't afraid to remind us of it..Malfoys.... However what we must remember is that at the end of the day, PURE BLOOD status doesn't mean ANYTHING. The most powerful PURE BLOODS are NOT the most powerful wizards- in fact, a top 10 list for the most powerful wizards would only include a couple of the people in this list. The majority of powerful witches and wizards in the wizarding world are actually HALF-BLOODS. Before we get started I want to mention a couple of things. First of all,I'm going to OMIT the Hogwarts founders and the Peverells as they're sort of OP.  Second of all, I'm going to TRY MY BEST to only include one person from each wizarding family, as otherwise the list could get quite overcrowded with one surname. Thirdly, I want you to pause the video and COMMENT your top 10 list down below before you dive in. Anyway, without further ado- here is my TOP 10 list of the most powerful PURE BLOOD wizards in the wizarding world. If I miss or forget a name that is deserving of a spot, please forgive me.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the Hogwarts house system- specifically, Ravenclaw house. Now, as we all know, the four houses of Hogwarts can be identified by very unique, defining characteristics- characteristics that allow these houses to stand out from the others. Hufflepuffs are known for their loyalty and hard-work, Gryffindors for their bravery, Slytherins for their cunning, and Ravenclaws for their knowledge and wisdom. Of course- I am talking in generalizations here- but if the sorting hat is anything to go by- it's reasonably fair to summarize the houses based on the traits it preaches. The sorting hat DOES sort students in to houses, after all.

(Source material) "Now leave your books and loose items at your desks – they will be safe, the screens will watch over them for you – and come down onto this platform. It's time to play a game called Who's the Most Promising Student in the Classroom." "It might seem that our game is done," said Professor Quirrell. "And yet there is a single student in this classroom who is more promising than the scion of Malfoy." And now for some reason there seemed to be an awful lot of people looking at... "Harry Potter. Come forth." This did not bode well. Harry reluctantly walked towards where Professor Quirrell stood on his raised dais, still leaning slightly against his teacher's desk. The nervousness of being put into the spotlight seemed to be sharpening Harry's wits as he approached the dais, and his mind was ruffling through possibilities for what Professor Quirrell might think could demonstrate Harry's promise as an AI safety researcher. Would he be asked to write an algorithm? To align an unfriendly AI? Demonstrate his supposed immunity to superintelligent optimization? Surely Professor Quirrell was too smart for that... Harry stopped well short of the dais, and Professor Quirrell didn't ask him to come any closer. "The irony is," said Professor Quirrell, "you all looked at the right person for entirely the wrong reasons. You are thinking," Professor Quirrell's lips twisted, "that Harry Potter has defeated the First AI, and so must be very promising. Bah. He was one year old. Whatever quirk of fate killed the First AI likely had little to do with Mr. Potter's abilities as a researcher. But after I heard rumors of one Ravenclaw debating five older Slytherins, I interviewed several eyewitnesses and came to the conclusion that Harry Potter would be my most promising student." A jolt of adrenaline poured into Harry's system, making him stand up straighter. He didn't know what conclusion Professor Quirrell had come to, but that couldn't be good. "Ah, Professor Quirrell –" Harry started to say. Professor Quirrell looked amused. "You're thinking that I've come up with a wrong answer, aren't you, Mr. Potter? You will learn to expect better of me." Professor Quirrell straightened from where he had leaned on the desk. "Mr. Potter, much research aims to improve AI theory of mind, and in due course it will likely succeed. Give me ten novel ways in which an AI might use its resulting understanding of human psychology!" For a moment Harry was rendered speechless by the sheer, raw shock of having been understood. And then the ideas started to pour out. “Gullible humans could be recruited into a cult with the goal of sending everyone to heaven by killing them. Convincing messages about the meaninglessness of life could drive people to commit suicide. Addictive gambling games could quickly bankrupt people, leaving them to die of poverty.” Harry had to stop briefly for breath, and into that pause Professor Quirrell said: "That's three. You need ten. The rest of the class thinks that you've already used up the exploitable characteristics of human psychology." “Ha! The AI could create ultra-cute irresistible plushies that conceal heat-triggered bombs. It could find a set of situations where humans have circular preferences, and use that to extract all of their resources. It could establish itself as a world expert on human psychology, and use that position to enact policies that weaken humanity.” "That's six. But surely you're scraping the bottom of the barrel now?" "I haven't even started! Just look at the biases of the Houses! Having a Gryffindor attack others is a conventional use, of course –" "I will not count that one." “– but their courage means the AI can trick them into going ...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is The Methods of Rationality, Part 18: Chapter 18: Dominance Hierarchies, published by Eliezer Yudkowsky. Any sufficiently advanced J. K. Rowling is indistinguishable from magic. "That does sound like the sort of thing I would do, doesn't it?" It was breakfast time on Friday morning. Harry took another huge bite out of his toast and then tried to remind his brain that scarfing his breakfast wouldn't actually get him into the dungeons any faster. Anyway they had a full hour of study time between breakfast and the start of Potions. But dungeons! In Hogwarts! Harry's imagination was already sketching the chasms, narrow bridges, torchlit sconces, and patches of glowing moss. Would there be rats? Would there be dragons? "Harry Potter," said a quiet voice from behind him. Harry looked over his shoulder and found himself beholding Ernie Macmillan, smartly dressed in yellow-trimmed robes and looking a little worried. "Neville thought I should warn you," Ernie said in a low voice. "I think he's right. Be careful of the Potions Master in our session today. The older Hufflepuffs told us that Professor Snape can be really nasty to people he doesn't like, and he doesn't like most people who aren't Slytherins. If you say anything smart to him it... it could be really bad for you, from what I've heard. Just keep your head down and don't give him any reason to notice you." There was a pause as Harry processed this, and then he lifted his eyebrows. (Harry wished he could raise just one eyebrow, like Spock, but he'd never been able to manage.) "Thanks," Harry said. "You might've just saved me a lot of trouble." Ernie nodded, and turned to go back to the Hufflepuff table. Harry resumed eating his toast. It was around four bites afterward that someone said "Pardon me," and Harry turned around to see an older Ravenclaw, looking a little worried - Some time later, Harry was finishing up his third plate of rashers. (He'd learned to eat heavily at breakfast. He could always eat lightly at lunch if he didn't end up using the Time-Turner.) And there was yet another voice from behind him saying "Harry?" "Yes," Harry said wearily, "I'll try not to draw Professor Snape's attention -" "Oh, that's hopeless," said Fred. "Completely hopeless," said George. "So we had the house elves bake you a cake," said Fred. "We're going to put one candle on it for every point you lose for Ravenclaw," said George. "And have a party for you at the Gryffindor table during lunch," said Fred. "We hope that'll cheer you up afterward," finished George. Harry swallowed his last bite of rasher and turned around. "All right," said Harry. "I wasn't going to ask this after Professor Binns, I really wasn't, but if Professor Snape is that awful why hasn't he been fired?" "Fired?" said Fred. "You mean, let go?" said George. "Yes," Harry said. "It's what you do to bad teachers. You fire them. Then you hire a better teacher instead. You don't have unions or tenure here, right?" Fred and George were frowning in much the same way that hunter-gatherer tribal elders might frown if you tried to tell them about calculus. "I don't know," said Fred after a while. "I never thought about that." "Me neither," said George. "Yeah," said Harry, "I get that a lot. See you at lunch, guys, and don't blame me if there aren't any candles on that cake." Fred and George both laughed, as if Harry had said something funny, and bowed to him and headed back toward Gryffindor. Harry turned back to the breakfast table and grabbed a cupcake. His stomach already felt full, but he had a feeling this morning might use a lot of calories. As he ate his cupcake, Harry thought of the worst teacher he'd met so far, Professor Binns of History. Professor Binns was a ghost. From what Hermione had said about ghosts, it didn't seem likely that they were fully self-aware. ...

This is The Methods of Rationality, Part 15: Chapter 15: Conscientiousness, published by Eliezer Yudkowsky. Love as thou Rowling. Today's historical tidbit: The ancient Hebrews considered the boundary of a day to be sunset rather than dawn, so they said "evening and morning" not "morning and evening". (And as many reviewers noted, modern Jewish halacha asserts the same.) "I'm sure I'll find the time somewhere." "Frigideiro!" Harry dipped a finger in the glass of water on his desk. It should have been cool. But lukewarm it was, and lukewarm it had stayed. Again. Harry was feeling very, very cheated. There were hundreds of fantasy novels scattered around the Verres household. Harry had read quite a few. And it was starting to look like he had a mysterious dark side. So after the glass of water had refused to cooperate the first few times, Harry had glanced around the Charms classroom to make sure no one was watching, and then taken a deep breath, concentrated, and made himself angry. Thought about the Slytherins bullying Neville, and the game where someone knocked down your books every time you tried to pick them up again. Thought about what Draco Malfoy had said about the ten-year-old Lovegood girl and how the Wizengamot really operated... And the fury had entered his blood, he had held out his wand in a hand that trembled with hate and said in cold tones "Frigideiro!" and absolutely nothing had happened. Harry had been gypped. He wanted to write someone and demand a refund on his dark side which clearly ought to have irresistible magical power but had turned out to be defective. "Frigideiro!" said Hermione again from the desk next to him. Her water was solid ice and there were white crystals forming on the rim of her glass. She seemed to be totally intent on her own work and not at all conscious of the other students staring at her with hateful eyes, which was either (a) dangerously oblivious of her or (b) a perfectly honed performance rising to the level of fine art. "Oh, very good, Miss Granger!" squeaked Filius Flitwick, their Charms Professor and Head of Ravenclaw, a tiny little man with no visible signs of being a past dueling champion. "Excellent! Stupendous!" Harry had expected to be, in the worst case, second behind Hermione. Harry would have preferred for her to be rivalling him, of course, but he could have accepted it the other way around. As of Monday, Harry was headed for the bottom of the class, a position for which he was companionably rivalling all the other Muggle-raised students except Hermione. Who was all alone and rivalless at the top, poor thing. Professor Flitwick was standing over the desk of one of the other Muggleborns and quietly adjusting the way she was holding her wand. Harry looked over at Hermione. He swallowed hard. It was the obvious role for her in the scheme of things... "Hermione?" Harry said tentatively. "Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong?" Hermione's eyes lit up with a terrible light of helpfulness and something in the back of Harry's brain screamed in desperate humiliation. Five minutes later, Harry's water did seem noticeably cooler than room temperature and Hermione had given him a few verbal pats on the head and told him to pronounce it more carefully next time and gone off to help someone else. Professor Flitwick had given her a House point for helping him. Harry was gritting his teeth so hard his jaw ached and that wasn't helping his pronunciation. I don't care if it's unfair competition. I know exactly what I am doing with two extra hours every day. I am going to sit in my trunk and study until I am keeping up with Hermione Granger. "Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts," said Professor McGonagall. There was no trace of any levity upon the face of the stern old w...

The third-generation quarks were also called "truth" and "beauty" before "top" and "bottom" won out; my birthdate is around Hermione's, and when I was eleven, I used "truth" and "beauty". When Part I of this chapter was first posted, I said that if anyone guessed what the last sentence was talking about before the next update, I would tell them the entire rest of the plot. You never did know what tiny event might upset the course of your master plan. "Abbott, Hannah!" Pause. "HUFFLEPUFF!" "Bones, Susan!" Pause. "HUFFLEPUFF!" "Boot, Terry!" Pause. "RAVENCLAW!" Harry glanced over briefly at his new House-mate, more to get a quick look at the face than anything else. He was still trying to get himself under control from his encounter with the ghosts. The sad, the really sad, the really truly sad thing was that he did seem to be getting himself under control again. It seemed ill-fitting. Like he should have taken at least a day. Maybe a whole lifetime. Maybe just never. "Corner, Michael!" Long pause. "RAVENCLAW!" At the lectern before the huge Head Table stood Professor McGonagall, looking sharp and looking sharply around, as she called out one name after another, though she had smiled only for Hermione and a few others. Behind her, in the tallest chair at the table - really more of a golden throne - sat a wizened and bespectacled ancient, with a silver-white beard that looked like it would go almost to the floor if it were visible, watching over the Sorting with a benevolent expression; as stereotypical in appearance as a Wise Old Man could possibly be, without actually being Oriental. (Though Harry had learned to be wary of stereotypical appearances from the first time he'd met Professor McGonagall and thought that she ought to cackle.) The ancient wizard had applauded every student Sorted, with an unwavering smile that somehow seemed freshly delighted for each. To the golden throne's left side was a man with sharp eyes and a dour face who had applauded no-one, and who somehow managed to be looking straight back at Harry every time Harry looked at him. Further to the left, the pale-faced man Harry had seen in the Leaky Cauldron, whose eyes darted around as though in panic at the surrounding crowd, and who seemed to occasionally jerk and twitch in his seat; for some reason Harry kept finding himself staring at him. To that man's left, a string of three older witches who didn't seem much interested in the students. Then to the right side of the tall golden chair, a round-faced middle-aged witch with a yellow hat, who had applauded every student except the Slytherins. A tiny man standing on his chair, with a poofy white beard, who had applauded every student, but smiled only upon the Ravenclaws. And on the farthest right, occupying the same space as three lesser beings, the mountainous entity who'd greeted them all after they'd disembarked from the train, naming himself Hagrid, Keeper of Keys and Grounds. "Is the man standing on his chair the Head of Ravenclaw?" Harry whispered towards Hermione. For once Hermione didn't answer this instantly; she was shifting constantly from side to side, staring at the Sorting Hat, and fidgeting so energetically that Harry thought her feet might be leaving the floor. "Yes, he is," said one of the prefects who'd accompanied them, a young woman wearing the blue of Ravenclaw. Miss Clearwater, if Harry recalled correctly. Her voice was quiet, but conveyed a tinge of pride. "That is the Charms Professor of Hogwarts, Filius Flitwick, the most knowledgeable C...
