BY THE TIME Walt Disney Productions released “The Rescuers” in 1977, the idea of a “Rescue Aid Society” dedicated to the eradication of kidnapping felt quaint, old-fashioned, and fun. But not many years earlier, when memories of the Progressive Era were fresher, it would not have scanned that way. In fact, “The Rescuers” was first pitched in 1962, at which time Walt Disney himself killed it. And that was probably a good call: members of the real Aid Societies were still alive and had matured into one of the fiercest and most serious cohorts of old ladies the world had ever known. A cartoon that seemed to poke fun at the great accomplishments of their younger lives, even gentle and good-natured fun, would have brought them out of retirement ready for battle. And Walt knew what they were capable of — he had been there in those Aid Society ladies' heyday. And he'd been working in show business — one of the industries they regularly locked horns with. No, “The Rescuers” would not come out in 1962. It would have to wait until every society lady who in her youth had made it her life's work to stamp out “white slavery” was gone, along with Disney himself, before it could be safely made. For that was what the Aid Societies were about. They weren't dedicated to finding and rescuing little orphan kids who had been kidnapped by evil flame-haired swamp witches to steal diamonds. They were anti-human-trafficking organizations. And one of their most prominent and effective members was a Portland woman named Lola Greene Baldwin, known to history as the first paid female police officer west of the Rockies. (Portland, Multnomah County; 1900s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/23-06.lola-baldwin-municipal-mother-622.html)

In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Patricia and Arun start a themed month looking back at hidden gems starting off with the 1990 animated Disney movie The Rescuers Down Under which is a sequel to the 1977 film The Rescuers. The movie features a young Australian boy named Cody who befriends an eagle Marahute who is laying three eggs. Cody meets up with a poacher named McLeach who is looking for the eagle to sell it for a high price. He kidnaps Cody for him to reveal Marahute's location and a mouse calls the Rescue Aid Society in New York City. Bernard and Miss Bianca take on the mission to go to Australia to rescue Cody with Bernard wanting to propose to Miss Bianca, an Australian Outback mouse named Jake as their brave companion, and the albatross Wilbur going through many obstacles from a busted back to protecting the eagle eggs from McLeach. When the movie premiered, it made only $47.4 million dollars due to being overshadowed by Home Alone which came out around the same time. It's considered the black sheep of the Disney Renaissance films since it came out after The Little Mermaid, but before Beauty and the Beast and had no musical moments with memorable songs. Critics have criticized the lack of story, but praised it due to its beautiful groundbreaking animation with The CAPS System and epic moments with action and atmosphere compared to its predecessor. Viewers appreciated The Rescuers Down Under when it was released on VHS and DVD even if they didn't watch or remember The Rescuers. It currently has a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. With The Rescuers Down Under seeing as a cult classic, what did Patricia and Arun think of it? Does it hold up over 30 years later? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

Episode SummaryIn their deconstruction of The Rescuers (1977), Erin and Rachel discuss orphans, alligators, and confederate symbolism. This film seemingly represents the first attempts of the Walt Disney Animation Studios to represent racial diversity and gender equality in any intentional or meaningful way, but how successful are they?Episode BibliographyCaroll, T.W. Krissi and I went on a trip with our two favorite mice from the Rescue Aid Society to save poor Penny from the clutches of the wicked Madame Medusa. Along the way we chatted about makeup, questioned mice air travel via Albatross and came up with interesting theories about how exactly that huge diamond ended up inside that skull. Strap in and laugh along with us!

Questions we asked this week include: Why is there just one adoption day at an orphanage? Penny blames the pretty red-headed girl for getting adopted but isn't Penny red-headed? Is this film just a giant ripoff of Annie? And we've got some behind the scenes info on Madame Medusa's creation that you won't believe. R-E-S C-U-E Time for Dudes-Watch-Diiiiisss-Ney! That's right, it's the tale of the Rescue Aid Society, 1977's The Rescuers. A film so good(?) that it was the first Disney Animated Picture to receive a sequel. You can tell it's a great film by how little Dustin and Jake actually talk about it during this episode. It's a banner day for the Sweeties as we finally got all the wires and do-dads to configure our DVD player to work! With this old-fangled technology we're now able to watch our favorite Disney classics, and so we pressed our luck at the library to see what Disney oldies and came up with Disney's first animated sequel The Rescuers Down Under! We were HUGE fans of this growing up, watching the bootlegged copy our dad recorded from the TV on the regs, and we credit this movie and Crocodile Dundee with teaching us everything we know about Australia! From 1990, The Rescuers Down Under tells the story of sweet little Cody, a bird lover kidnapped by a the terrifying poacher McLeach who is looking for a rare golden eagle. Bernard and Miss Bianca are two mice from the US who come to save the day as part of the Rescue Aid Society, a worldwide organization run by rodents, that helps kids in trouble. Even though we hate mice, gosh are those little buddies cute. We'll chat about all our B-list Disney favs, talk about memorable scenes and one we randomly quote a lot (Pea Soup!), and ruminate on how Disney was able to convince us that there was such a thing as a Golden Eagle the size of a truck. Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon.
In this week's all-new Mousterpiece Cinema, Josh, Gabe, and Mike not only return to the land of the little, but they do some surprising box-office fact-hunting. All in the name of two little mice from the Rescue Aid Society, too! Yes, it's time to discuss the 1990 sequel to The Rescuers, better known as The Rescuers Down Under. Does this forgotten film deserve a second chance? And why did it do so poorly at the box office back at the beginning of the Disney Renaissance? Your hosts delve into these issues and find some time to rant about Disney's questionable decision to remove the Little Mermaid 3D re-release from their schedule in this brand new show. Check it out, mate! And have a g'day! (It was just too silly to pass up, sorry.)
Grab the closest jug of moonshine, sit back, and relax as Josh, Mike and Gabe close out 2012 with their little friends Bernard and Bianca from the Rescue Aid Society. Yes, this week, the trio discusses the 1977 Disney animated film The Rescuers, from its many songs to its Cruella De Vil-like villain Madame Medusa. Would it surprise you to learn that Josh contradicts a recent opinion regarding bleakness? Would it surprise you to learn that Mike calls Josh out for this very thing? (Only if you're a new listener!) Oh, and would you like to know what it sounds like when Gabe impersonates the sound of sad horns you might hear in a Burt Bacharach song? Of course you would! All this and more in the new episode of Mousterpiece Cinema!
