Female police unit (post I World War)
POPULARITY
Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. In a gripping special episode of her appearance on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, seasoned police officer Autumn Clifford pulls back the curtain on what Hollywood gets wrong about law enforcement and especially about women in the force. Known for her straight-shooting style and no-fluff advice, Autumn isn't just a cop, she's also a coach, podcast host, and powerful voice challenging outdated narratives about female officers. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. “She smashes stereotypes every time she puts on the badge,” says a fan on Facebook. And it's true, Autumn's story proves that real-life police work, especially from the perspective of a woman, is far more complex and courageous than what Hollywood often shows. It is also promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other platforms. In this special episode of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast , Autumn recounts one of the most intense moments of her early police career: a domestic violence call that turned into a standoff with an armed suspect holding his partner hostage. While action movies might glamorize this as a gun-blazing, adrenaline-fueled rescue, Autumn explains the reality. Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . “It wasn't about kicking in doors or pulling a trigger,” she says. “It was about using my voice, my presence, and my training to deescalate. We talked him down. We saved lives that day. That's the part you don't see in the movies.” The episode dives deep into the gritty truth of police work and reveals how television and film often reduce female cops to one-dimensional roles: either hyper-sexualized, overly emotional, or placed in administrative tasks rather than on the frontlines. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. “You know what's wild?” Autumn asks. “Just type ‘Female Police Officer Stereotypes' into any AI tool and you'll see the same tired nonsense. That we're too weak, too emotional, not respected enough to lead. That stuff is still circulating. And it's false.” Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. As Autumn tells it, these stereotypes aren't just insulting, they're harmful. They can impact hiring, promotions, and the way the public and fellow officers perceive female professionals. But she's not here to complain, she's here to change the conversation. “Do you know how many women applied to become officers because of Angie Dickinson in Police Woman?” she points out. “Representation matters. Back then, she was the first to lead a successful police drama. Today, we need more real stories out there. Not just fiction.” You can listen to his stories and interview on our website for free in addition to platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and other major podcast platforms. She draws inspiration from characters like Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs and Marge Gunderson from Fargo, women who were smart, tough, and quietly powerful. “When I ran the obstacle course, I pictured Jodie Foster's Clarice running beside me,” Autumn laughs. “That's how much that mattered.” Autumn's message reaches beyond the badge. Through her coaching podcast and her website AutumnClifford.com, she guides people to become the best versions of themselves. Her no-nonsense style resonates with those looking to break through barriers in their own lives. Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. “If you're stuck, if you're burnt out, if you feel like no one understands, you're not alone,” she says. “I've been there. My podcast isn't just stories. It's strategy. It's support. It's soul.” Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium and most all social media platforms. In her first podcast episode, Autumn shared her frustrations with law enforcement culture and how a back injury forced her to redefine her purpose. That journey became the foundation for her coaching work. Now, she brings on world-class guests, shares raw insights, and offers tools for transformation. “She's not just talking to cops,” says one listener. “She's talking to anyone who feels like they've been underestimated.” Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. So the next time you watch a cop drama or a crime thriller, ask yourself, Do you know what really happens out there? Do you know what these women are capable of? Do you know female police? She smashes stereotypes. The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. The team behind the Soundcheck podcast series offers their favorite live performances from the WNYC studios this year: including Mexico City-based cellist, producer, and singer Mabe Fratti and her trio; Brazilian composer Amaro Freitas playing the piano's insides; and the soulful mambo of Cuba big band Orquesta Akokán. Plus, Norwegian punk cabaret sextet Kaizers Orchestra, Georgia singer and musician Lizz Wright, and Brooklyn-based Zelenaya with their Eastern European folk songs set to heavy metal (cough...nepotism on that last band...cough.) Also, fiery roots music for everyone by American singer-songwriter Fantastic Negrito, multi-instrumentalist Shabaka's flute-based meditative spiritual jazz, and the saucy multi-instrumentalist Joan Wasser of Joan As Police Woman at the piano. This episode of The Lydian Spin is filled with haunting reflections and fierce critiques. Lydia opens by reading a sharply worded Daily Beast op-ed from Michael Ian Black on the high stakes of the upcoming election. She then dives into the Shimmy Disc release Poe: To One in Paradise (for Hal Willner), a limited edition LP that celebrates Edgar Allan Poe's gothic verse. This 13-track album featuring luminaries from across poetry, literature, theater, and music—honors the late Hal Willner. On Side A, listeners are treated to To One in Paradise by Joan as Police Woman, Eldorado by Edgar Oliver, To My Mother by Thurston Moore & Eva Moore, The Valley of Unrest by Eric Mingus, A Dream Within a Dream by Britta Phillips, and Evening Star by Teller. Side B includes Fairy-Land by Anne Waldman, Dreamland by Lydia, The Sleeper by Larry 'Ratso' Sloman, Silence by Chloe Webb, Imitation by Rick Moody, The Lake by Jennifer Charles, and finally, an archival recording of Allen Ginsberg reading The Bells. Kramer's composition ties the collection together with an atmospheric score, keeping Poe's spirit alive for a modern audience. A special thank you to Kramer for allowing the Lydian Spin to play the album. Happy Halloween!

In the last 10-20 years, attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people in America have shifted due to more positive visibility and evolving cultural norms. Cynthia takes a look at two moments from 1970s television that revealed glimpses of LGBTQ+ allyship—a talk show moment and a 1974 episode of Police Woman. In 1970, June Lockhart appeared on The Virginia Graham Show and stopped the hostess in her tracks, pushing back on stereotypes and tropes common for the time. And the story of how a 54-year-old clip is available for viewing is its own testament to advocacy. LGBTQ+ scholar and media documentarian Steven Capsuto's book, Alternate Channels, helped Cynthia connect the June Lockhart dot to an episode of Police Woman. Capsuto's book is an essential work for every media, gender, and social justice scholar. He traces television and even radio's early depiction of mostly gay characters and the absence of lesbians. His book also details the LGBTQ+ community's organization and support from straight allies that fought against distorted and ugly depictions of gay and lesbian characters in television and film for more than 75 years. The overall trend in American society has been toward greater understanding and support for LGBTQ+ people and this is, to a significant degree, the result of advocates and allies pushing for more positive and diverse characterizations in popular culture. Television largely ignored lesbians until the 1970s and even then, the characters were bitter, violent, and unstable. With just a few sentences, June Lockhart, in real life, and Angie Dickinson, as Sgt. Pepper Anderson, showed viewers the power of LGBTQ+ allyship. In 1951, at the age of 21, Gwendoline Crockford joined the Berkshire Constabulary as a woman police constable. Ruth's memoir of her mother, a pioneering female officer in the days before beat police even had radios, is set in a world of barely-remembered post-war austerity and a society on the brink of enormous change. Gwen's colleagues are a colourful cast of characters, including her fellow WPC the fun-loving Pattie Baxter, fearsome WPS Miss Robertshaw, lechy PC Higgs, full-of-himself DI Dankworth, Barbadian nurse Suzette McDaniel with the newly formed NHS, and probation officer Hilda Bloom with the then-in-its-infancy social services. CALLING WPC CROCKFORD navigates both the cosiness of solving burglaries and chasing escaped circus animals with darker child protection themes, narrated with humour and a deliciously light touch.Ruth D'Alessandro studied Modern Arabic at Durham University and worked in publishing before becoming a commercial copywriter. @RuthDAlesWrites Follow Ruth on Instagram Follow Ruth on Tiktok Hosted on Acast. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Barry Williams, America's Big Brother, Co-Star, “The Brady Bunch”, Author, “Growing Up Brady” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Barry Williams, is one of the most instantly recognizable and beloved actors of our generation, who became known throughout the world as America's most reliable big brother, “Greg” on the iconic TV show “The Brady Bunch”. Although the original sitcom ended in 1974 after 5 seasons, “The Brady Bunch” has had phenomenal longevity and success. There were 7 different TV series, 2 full length feature films, 5 TV specials, a concert tour, 3 record albums, a stage play, a reality series, and countless Brady Bunch merchandising items and collectibles that are still very much in demand, especially the Brady Bunch lunch bucket. And get this: since its premiere on September 26, 1969, “The Brady Bunch” has NEVER been off the air. The show has been broadcast in almost every country on earth, and each of the original 117 episodes has aired over 100,000 times, and for many years it's been the highest rated program EVER on Nick at Night. But well beyond “The Brady Bunch”, our guest has had a long and impressive career as an actor, singer, musician, dancer and producer. He's appeared in dozens of classic TV shows including “Run For Your Life”, “Gomer Pyle”, “Mod Squad”, “Adam-12”, “Mission Impossible”, “Police Woman”, “Three's Company” and many more. He had recurring roles as “Hannibal” in “General Hospital” and “Dean Strickland”, also known as “The Dean Machine”, in “Hollywood 7”. And WHO can ever forget him on Season 32 of “Dancing with the Stars”, and Season 8 of “The Masked Singer” as one of “the Mummies”. He starred on Broadway in ”Romance, Romance” and “Pippin”, and he appeared in stage productions of “Grease”, “The Sound of Music”, “West Side Story” and “City of Angels”. On top of all that, he's a gifted singer and guitar player, and he plays in a band called “Barry Williams and the Travel-eers”, featuring his beautiful wife Tina. His New York Times bestselling book entitled, “Growing Up Brady: I was a Teenage Greg”, is now in its 3rd edition, and was made into a TV movie, which he co-wrote and co-executive produced. The book highlights the relationships, the behind-the-scenes stories, and especially the people who made “The Brady Bunch” so special to multiple generations around the world. In 1994 our guest was nominated for a Cable Ace Award for Best Performance in a Comedy Special. And he's received 4 TV Land Award nominations, and in 2007, he and his fellow Brady Bunch castmates won the TV Land Pop Culture Award. In 1989 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award as a former child star from the Young Artist Foundation. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Mar 28th Publish Date: Mar 28th Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, March 28th, and Happy 68th Birthday to singer Reba McEntire. ***03.28.24 – BIRTHDAY – REBA MCENTIRE*** I'm Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Woman on Cocaine and Fentanyl Caused Fatal Crash in Smyrna Teenager Accused of Having Gun at Sprayberry High School Cobb County Stormwater Fee Vote Delayed Amid Deluge of Opposition Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss raw milks health benefits. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Police: Woman on Cocaine and Fentanyl Caused Fatal Crash in Smyrna Sandrika Brock, a Marietta woman, faces charges including vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, and DUI after a fatal crash in Smyrna on Oct. 20. Allegedly under the influence of cocaine, marijuana, and fentanyl, Brock reportedly caused the collision while driving westbound in the eastbound lane, crashing into Jose Cuellar's Kia Sportage. Leonard Johnson was killed, and Cuellar and Maria Cuellar were seriously injured. Brock's boyfriend, Aaron Thedford, was also injured. Police refute Brock's claim that Thedford grabbed the wheel, stating evidence suggests Brock accelerated toward oncoming traffic. Brock, found driving without insurance or a seatbelt, is held without bond at Cobb County Adult Detention Center. STORY 2: Teenager Accused of Having Gun at Sprayberry High School Cameron Mekhi Hester, 17, is accused of possessing a .177 caliber Daisy pistol in his bookbag following a physical altercation at Sprayberry High School on March 14. Assistant Principal Richmond Parker discovered the gun during an administrative search. Hester faces a charge of carrying weapons within a school safety zone. He was arrested on March 22 and booked into Cobb County Adult Detention Center, later released on a $3,500 bond. STORY 3: Cobb County Stormwater Fee Vote Delayed Amid Deluge of Opposition The Cobb Board of Commissioners, considering a stormwater fee, faced significant opposition during a meeting packed with residents. Commissioner Jerica Richardson expressed hesitancy after public comment, requesting more education for residents and stakeholder meetings. The proposed fee would fund stormwater infrastructure improvements, but many residents opposed it, calling it a tax burden. Richardson's motion to delay the vote was supported, aiming to refine the proposal and engage the community further. The board agreed to postpone the decision to August, seeking to address concerns and enhance understanding before proceeding. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: HENRY CO SHERIFFS – DRAKE STORY 4: Cobb Commission Makes Changes to Public Comment Rules The Cobb Board of Commissioners made several revisions to its rules on public comment during a marathon meeting. Changes included increasing the number of speakers allowed from 12 to 20 but reducing their speaking time from five to three minutes each. Speakers are now restricted to one slot per meeting, and commissioners' remarks after public comment periods were shortened to three minutes. Discussion also arose about prohibiting audiovisual presentations during public comment due to cybersecurity concerns, with Chairwoman Lisa Cupid suggesting addressing concerns separately. Despite opposition, most changes were approved, including limits on commissioners' presentations and prohibitions on campaigning during public comments. STORY 5: 'Accountability and Protection': Marietta Discusses Squatting Solutions Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin has proposed an ordinance aimed at addressing squatting and homelessness in the city. The ordinance would prohibit squatting on private and public property during certain hours and impose fines for violations. Despite concerns about criminalizing homelessness, the City Council discussed the proposal, emphasizing the need for public-private partnerships to address the underlying issues. However, there are challenges in enforcing such ordinances due to jurisdictional complexities and limited resources. While the proposed ordinance may strengthen police response, it is acknowledged that it won't completely solve the homelessness issue. We'll be back in a moment Break: TEDS – INGLES 10 STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss raw milk's health benefits. A QUARTET OF USTV SEVENTIES COP SHOWS First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on October 15th 2023 This week, PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI, is back with another quartet of TV shows that he's been watching in his quest to discover what sort of television he might be able to find when he's off on his travels and far, far away from his own personal archive of DVDs, blu-rays, and other television that he might have about the house to entertain himself with. This week he's reached the early 1970s and has been watching four American series that, coincidentally, all happened to be popular crime dramas from that era, which, perhaps shouldn't be all that surprising to us really, as, with the popularity of the Western fading fast in the television output of the time, it was the crime drama towards which the Networks and Production Companies turned in order to find their next sure fire hit in a turbulent and often gritty, grimy, and crime-ridden decade in which fear and anxiety often stalked the urban streets on both sides of that vast continent, and TV crime was fought mostly by the Cops, the Lawyers, or the Private Eyes. So, during the next hour, PAUL will be talking about BARNABY JONES in which BUDDY EBSEN moved from spending many years as a comic oil millionaire into the more murky world of Private Detective work in L.A., KOJAK, in which TELLY SAVALAS was a streetwise cop fighting crime in the bankrupt city of NEW YORK, PETROCELLI, in which BARRY NEWMAN took on cases in Californian Courtrooms, and POLICE WOMAN featuring ANGIE DICKENSON as PEPPER ANDERSON in a ground-breaking yet hard-hitting police drama. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show

BY THE TIME Walt Disney Productions released “The Rescuers” in 1977, the idea of a “Rescue Aid Society” dedicated to the eradication of kidnapping felt quaint, old-fashioned, and fun. But not many years earlier, when memories of the Progressive Era were fresher, it would not have scanned that way. In fact, “The Rescuers” was first pitched in 1962, at which time Walt Disney himself killed it. And that was probably a good call: members of the real Aid Societies were still alive and had matured into one of the fiercest and most serious cohorts of old ladies the world had ever known. A cartoon that seemed to poke fun at the great accomplishments of their younger lives, even gentle and good-natured fun, would have brought them out of retirement ready for battle. And Walt knew what they were capable of — he had been there in those Aid Society ladies' heyday. And he'd been working in show business — one of the industries they regularly locked horns with. No, “The Rescuers” would not come out in 1962. It would have to wait until every society lady who in her youth had made it her life's work to stamp out “white slavery” was gone, along with Disney himself, before it could be safely made. For that was what the Aid Societies were about. They weren't dedicated to finding and rescuing little orphan kids who had been kidnapped by evil flame-haired swamp witches to steal diamonds. They were anti-human-trafficking organizations. And one of their most prominent and effective members was a Portland woman named Lola Greene Baldwin, known to history as the first paid female police officer west of the Rockies. “Born In A Trunk” She may have been born in the Bay Area, but Amy Irving might as well have been born in a theatre. Her father was the film and stage director Julius Irving and her mother was the actress Priscilla Pointer. And what happens when you have theatre parents? Well, you're in the theatre. A lot. And then you're on the stage. A lot. And then it's in your blood and there's no turning back. Amy Irving got her start on the stage at 9 months old and from there she never stopped. She studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, landed in L.A. and almost immediately started landing role after role in movies and television. What movies and what television, you might be asking? Well, in the movies category she was in Carrie, Delancey Street, The Competition, Honeysuckle Rose and Yentil. She was also the singing voice of Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? As for television, she was on Police Woman, Happy Days and Once An Eagle with Sam Elliott and Glenn Ford. And not only was she working regularly in those mediums, she was still a busy theatre actor, appearing in Amadeus, Romeo and Juliet, Blithe Spirit and The Glass Menagerie. Along the way she picked up an Oscar nomination, a few Golden Globe nominations and she won a Screen Actors Guild Award. Now this is all just a partial list, but the fact of the matter is, from the big screen to the small screen to the stage, Amy Irving has always been a very busy working actor. Which brings us to Born In A Trunk, which is Irving debut album. Produced by Goolis, Born In A Trunk is a ten-track collection of songs that are culled from her life and career. She covers numbers by Willie Nelson, Tom Waits and Death Cab For Cutie. And The result? Well, not only a compelling and riveting listen, but an album whose song cycle combines to tell the story of a life on the stage and a career in the arts. Why write a memoir when you can sing one, right? And, boy can Amy Irving sing. Her precision, her timbre, her effortless phrasing and her sheer musical poise make Born In A Trunk one of 2023's great surprises. I was introduced to Elia through a mutual friend and another Wake up the Sun show guest Ann-Marie Saccurato. I had the pleasure of sitting down with her 2 weeks prior to her next big fight to unpack the story behind her pursuing a career in fighting, her service as a policewoman and the opening of a gym to help others change their lives. She is all about her community and being a part of something that keep her and other accountable to living and celebrating the most out of life. "Put God First" and everything else falls into place. Elia felt she needed a change in her life and was overweight. She attended a class at South Florida boxing and was encouraged to adopt a new lifestyle, change some routines and rituals that were not serving her and move forward. In the past she did it for others and she learned that she had to do it for herself. That included better time management for her job, the gym and ultimately led her to opening up her own space. She is the proud owner of @levelupboxingandfitness who opens the door to others seeking to change something in their life. Her big fight is coming up on April 29th so check out her page @elia_soulsnatcher & @levelupboxingandfitness for access to tickets. She is a true example of someone who truly dedicates her life to the benefit, protection and service to those around her. We hope you enjoy the show and see you at the fight!
Episode 61 : A Special Tribute to Composer Gerald Fried As time goes by, we lose some of the amazingly talented people who worked with Stanley during his film career, and we recently lost composer/conductor, Gerald Fried, February 17th 2023 to be precise, at the grand old age of 95. We spoke to Gerald in late 2018 when he was just 90 years young. He was one of the earliest collaborators of Stanley Kubrick, dating back to the very early 1950s. Gerald Fried, a native New Yorker, had scored almost 300 films and television shows in a career spanning over 70 years. His movie scores include such varied titles as Machine Gun Kelly for Roger Corman, Jack Nicholson's first feature film The Cry Baby Killer, The Killing of Sister George, Too Late The Hero & The Grisson Gang, all three for director Robert Aldrich. His TV credits include some of the most popular shows being produced at the time including M Squad, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, Gilligan's Island, The Man From Uncle, Mission Impossible, Lost In Space, Police Woman and Star Trek! He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music with an Original Dramatic Score for the feature-length documentary Birds Do It, Bees Do it at the 1976 Academy Awards, up against several other notable composers with memorable scores. The Wind and the Lion from Jerry Goldsmith, Jack Nitzsche's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Bite The Bullet by Alex North, and the winner that year was……… John Williams for probably the most famous movie score of all time… JAWS. So Gerald was in great company that night. Gerald also won an Emmy for his work with Quincy Jones on the ground-breaking mini-series Roots from 1977. Having composed the scores for five of Stanley Kubrick's earliest films, Gerald is one of Kubrick's most frequent collaborators. Fried and Kubrick first worked together as a composer & director partnership, both at the age of just 23, on the short film Day of the Fight back in 1951, followed by four feature films, Fear & Desire, Killer's Kiss, The Killing and Paths of Glory. We released about 30 minutes of this interview back in January 2020, but now we present to you the entire three-hour interview in honour and respect of the late great, Mr. Gerald Fried.
