"I am your host; your Ghost Host" After a needed break, Robert finally returns with a look at the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland. Paul Frees, who played a lot of roles in Frosty the Snowman, was also a major voice at Disney, but many know him as the ghost host of the classic ride. Join Robert as he dwells into the tomb of how the attraction came to be, how the attraction's story showcased a spirited atmosphere, how the other version differ, and he even goes into the adaptations of The Haunted Mansion. JOIN TSL WORKSHOPS: https://tslworkshops.circle.so To say that Kelly Younger is a fairly tell expert is an understatement. Younger has developed at Amazon, Apple, Hulu, Disney Studios, Paramount Animation, Warner Animation Group, Dreamworks Animation, Disney Originals, and consulted at Skydance Animation and on both SHREK 5 and PUSS IN BOOTS 2 at Illumination. “The origin story feels pretty far away from where I am now,” says screenwriter Kelly Younger. “I started out in archeology. Truth be told, I wanted to be a Goonie,” he jokes. “I'm from a working class Irish family. My family went through a hard financial time. We actually lost our house when I was a kid.” “In The Goonies, the kids are about to lose their homes, but then they find this treasure map, fight criminals, there's pirate ships, but ultimately they find the treasure that is going to save the family home. That movie really hit me at a pretty important moment.” “Then, when Indiana Jones came out, I wanted to be an archeologist. That was always my interest and facisnation. Lost civilizations and treasures. The kind of magic surrounding those kinds of stories. I was also a bit of a theater kid in middle school and high school. When it came time for school, I studied English Literature and the Classics.” Eventually, it became obvious that Younger was making career choices based on movies. “Ultimately, I moved to Ireland and studied literature, drama, folk tales, mythology, and fairy tales. I started out as a student of storytelling, but then my theater background kicked in and I started writing plays—mostly because I was broke. I wrote a play and won 1,000 pounds and got involved in the Dublin Theater Festival.” Eventually, this lead the screenwriter to Disney Animation where he worked as part of the “Story Trust,” providing feedback and advice for Moana, Cars 3, Coco, Incredibles 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Toy Story 4, Frozen II, Onward, Aladdin, and Raya and the Last Dragon. As a screenwriter, Younger has credits on Muppets Now, Muppets Haunted Mansion, and the new Eddie Murphy comedy Candy Cane Lane. The story follows a man who is determined to win the neighborhood's annual Christmas decorating contest until he makes a pact with an Elf who cast a spell on him which brings the 12 days of Christmas to life, and wrecks havoc on the town. Spooky, isn't? Another ghost from the past, and so soon! Well, the vibrations tell me it was poor planning on our part. But those vibrations are so sensitive because our vacation was pretty dang rejuvenating. That, some editing woes, and Clancy's sudden work trip means we're prepping for the upcoming drop of 2023's Haunted Mansion with a Rewind to Muppet Haunted Mansion! It was an absolute scream, and we hope it gives a glimpse into the future of the Muppet brand rising from the dead. This podcast was recorded during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being covered here wouldn't exist. You're not going to believe this, but Disney made another movie based on a theme park ride that barely anyone watched. That's right, we're talking about Haunted Mansion this week, based on the Disneyland attraction and a reboot of the 2003 film starring Eddy Murphy. It's not exactly scaring people into buying a ticket so far, but you better believe we'll exorcise caution in our takes. And most importantly...how does it compare to Muppets Haunted Mansion? Haunted Mansion was directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People, Bad Hair) and written by Katie Dippold. The film stars LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jared Leto (sort of?) The film opened in theaters on July 28 through Walt Disney Pictures and has a 123-minute runtime. Our intro music this week is “Which One?” by Glimlip & .multibeat. Welcome, Foolish Mortals, to our review of Disney's Haunted Mansion. Did Disney get it right this time? They subbed in Jared Leto for Eddie Murphy, and Jennifer Tilly for Jamie Lee Curtis... but they somehow forgot to include a decent script! Whoops! Hey, it happens. Friend of the show Derick McDuff is on-hand to geek out with me about the Disneyland ride's history & lore... and help me discuss the film a little bit, too. We also talk about theatrical gimmicks like 4DX and Screen X, try to think of successful ghost comedies (it's harder than you think!), and heap tons of praise on Muppets Haunted Mansion. Today we're going to be your non-ghost hosts and take you on a virtual behind-the-scenes tour of The Haunted Mansion attractions at Disneyland and The Magic Kingdom, so you can more deeply enjoy and appreciate all they goodies they've packed into the new Haunted Mansion movie. We haven't seen the movie yet so there won't be any spoilers, but we will be discussing the trailer for the movie later in the episode. So if you consider that type of conversation spoilery, we'll give you a warning before that part. Of course, this isn't the first time Disney has released a movie centered on the Haunted Mansion. Twenty years ago they released The Haunted Mansion starring Eddie Murphy, and 2 years ago they released Muppets Haunted Mansion starring Will Arnett and Taraji P. Henson. Both of these movies are available on Disney Plus. Eddie Murphy's version is not widely favored and has a 5.1 out of 10 on IMDB, while the Muppets version has a slightly higher score of 6.3 out of 10. If you're looking for all the Haunted Mansion goodness available on film, we also recommend Behind the Attraction episode 2: Haunted Mansion, also available on Disney Plus. Kara reviews the new Muppets Movie: Haunted Mansion. The ladies discuss what's great and not-so-great about this new Disney+ family fright!
Each year, film lovers flock to their screens for the month of October to partake in an annual ritual of Halloween-themed viewing. Most often, we pack the month with the goriest, most terrifying, horrific movies we can find, but that has never been the true essence of the Halloween spirit. There will always be room in our ghoulish hearts for the likes of Micahel Myers and Jason Voorhees, but growing up, Halloween was a time reserved for spooks more than scares. Benevolent Halloween, as we have chosen to call it, is the spirit of the month which focuses on its more universal appeals. The autumnal atmosphere, the folklore and mystery, and the suburban traditions of jack-o-lanterns and festive decoration. This picturesque vision of the holiday is best exemplified through the films we see each year, many of which were imprinted onto us at an early age through annual showings on television. Generations grew up experiencing the traditions of Halloween through the eyes of Charlie Brown, but as the years have gone by, and the annual outdoor excursion has ceased, we've turned inward and found a treasure trove of seasonal favorites which manage to encapsulate that Halloween spirit through the medium of film. Whether it's old favorites first seen on the Disney channel, unknown classics revived from the hallows of history, or a brand new treat such as the recent Muppets Haunted Mansion, we're here to catalogue of few of the outstanding favorites that make it into our rotation each year. Joining us in this endeavor is the foremost expert on Benevolent Halloween, and good friend of the show, Murph. All of this and more from your independent resource for classic and contemporary cinema.

Our backs are sore, our noses are peeling, and our bank account is depleted - all thanks to a trip to a trading post in a galaxy far, far away. This week we recap our adventure to Black Spire Outpost at Disneyland - including a debrief of our experience on Rise of the Resistance - which inevitably lead us to chucking out what we had planned to talk about for this week in order to keep talking about Star Wars with brand new Disney+ content. In this episode, the squad covers the 4th and 5th episodes of Marvel's 'What If...?" We ask what would happen if Doctor Strange lost the grounding presence of Rachel McAdams (truly devastating). We then ask what if our favorite superheroes no longer had a taste for justice, but for brains? Listen in for our thoughts, zombie survival strategies, and quibbles over Doctor Strange's potential for EVIL. We also cover the raft of awesome trailers that came out this week including Matrix: Revelations, Dune, Wheel of Time, AND trailers for the new Spider Man and Wolverine games. There's something here for everyone, and if that everyone doesn't include you, don't worry. We also covered the upcoming Halloween Lego Star Wars special, the Muppets Haunted Mansion movie, and a reminder about New York Comic Con. Did we get everyone? If not, complain to us on our Twitter page, @TheVerseCast! We also post news, announcements about the pod, and collect listener questions. You can also follow @Screenradar on Twitter, Facebook, & Instagram.
Time got away from us at the start of the month, and if nothing else we figured 2021's Marvel What If..? was kind of on theme with that.
