When Dragon's Lair burst onto the arcade scene, it singlehandedly revitalized arcades and blew minds with it's incredible Don Bluth animation. Then the race was on...could anyone pull off the home version?!?!? After MANY misfires, one man stood up and made it happen...and he did it on the only computer that could pull it off!

Andrew joins Ben this week for a discussion about a particular mythical beast, cultural symbol, and imaginary icon. One in the POÄNG and one in the pandemic chair—the guys fill us in on what they have been doing lately. Andrew has been thinking about his gardening hobby, researching a method for aging stainless steel, and creating all sorts of artsy things for his Advanced Dungeons Have Dragons pin Crowdfundr campaign. Ben has been pondering what he's going to do for the April Fools' Day episode this year and playing Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist (compliments of Binary Haze Interactive). Once they have concluded with the pleasantries, they enter… THE DRAGON! Together, they offer up a smorgasbord of pop culture ramblings and video game nonsense, including how their AD&D experiences shaped their creative natures. Then they navigate through a movie and music pop-culture-ridden obstacle course until they arrive at their video game destination. Andrew talks about Adventure for the Atari 2600, and Ben talks about one of the first laserdisc arcade games created in part by a former Disney artist and animator. *** 00:00:20 - A welcoming, the new threats, invest in leach farms, and Behind the Bastards 00:03:13 - Andrew left speechless on sadistics, Senator astronauts, and making it non-binary 00:07:33 - Stickers on Cybertrucks, rusting solutions for planters, and no library garlic this year 00:09:51 - The best kind of orchids, pro tips, the introduction is dragging, and the ADHD pin 00:12:58 - An ADHD Valentines Day, test printing for coffee mugs, and the AD&D pickup line 00:15:20 - Color printing wheels, and Ben has been playing Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist 00:18:02 - Not from Altoona, Mango is a Flerken, attention… dragons, and the ADHD pin origin 00:21:35 - Ben offends bowlers, no calisthenics before bowling, and "Trogdor the Burninator" Strong Bad Email #58 - Dragon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90X5NJleYJQ 00:23:50 - Another derogatory definition, Blair and the kaiju, and the word use blame game 00:28:07 - Taking back weird, tabletop lore, playing alone, and D&D method acting connections 00:32:29 - AARP Drews, rigorous screening, dragon drawing, and Pete's cost cutting measures 00:35:37 - Ariel is NOT dragon, movie audio n' picture books, H.R.
(Spoiler Section Length - 5min 22sec)When it comes to direct-to-video sequels of animated films, though Disney's efforts are often derided, due to their budgets they tend to be better than what other studios manage to do. We've seen various efforts already, such as with sequels to Don Bluth films, and they've run the gamut from 'okay' to 'very bad'. Does Ferngully's sequel fall in that range, or does it manage to break the mold? Listen to find out!
Welcome to this week's episode of The Video Store Podcast . This week, I'm focusing on animated movies that lean into darker themes and mature storytelling. These aren't your typical Saturday morning cartoons or Disney films. They're imaginative, ambitious, and not afraid to explore the more complicated corners of life.Let's dive into the four films I'm recommending this week.1. Watership Down (1978)This adaptation of Richard Adams' novel is often remembered for its striking animation and unflinching depiction of survival. On the surface, it's a story about rabbits searching for a safe place to call home, but the film works on deeper levels, touching on themes like leadership, sacrifice, and the brutal realities of nature.Director Martin Rosen made the choice to stay true to the novel's tone, which makes this film stand out from other animated projects of the time. The voice cast is strong, John Hurt as Hazel and Richard Briers as Fiver bring a lot of emotion to their roles. The animation is hand-drawn, with detailed backgrounds that create a world that feels both beautiful and dangerous.2. The Last Unicorn (1982)Based on Peter S. Beagle's novel, The Last Unicorn has a dreamlike quality that sets it apart from other animated films of its time. It tells the story of a unicorn searching for her lost kind, encountering both friends and enemies along the way. While the animation was produced by Rankin/Bass, the actual work was done by a Japanese studio that would later become Studio Ghibli, which might explain the film's unique visual style. This voice cast is great. Mia Farrow voices the Unicorn, Jeff Bridges plays Prince Lir, and Christopher Lee is unforgettable as King Haggard. Lee was reportedly a huge fan of the book and even brought his own copy to recording sessions to ensure his performance stayed faithful to the source material. The soundtrack, provided by the band America, gives the movie a melancholy, almost folk-like feel that complements its tone.3. The Secret of NIMH (1982)Don Bluth made his directorial debut with this adaptation of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien. The film tells the story of a widowed field mouse, Mrs. Brisby, who must save her home and sick child with the help of highly intelligent rats. What makes The Secret of NIMH stand out is how dark and detailed it is. Bluth and his team left Disney to make this film because they wanted to push the boundaries of animation, and it shows. The level of detail in the animation is stunning, especially in the rats' lair, which feels alive with glowing lights and intricate designs. The score by Jerry Goldsmith is sweeping and dramatic, which matches the film's high stakes. And while it's technically a kids' movie, it doesn't shy away from mature themes like death, ethics, and the consequences of human interference with nature.4. Heavy Metal (1981)If you're into sci-fi, fantasy, or anthology storytelling, Heavy Metal is one to check out. It's based on the magazine of the same name and features multiple stories connected by a mysterious glowing orb called the Loc-Nar. The animation is bold, with an unapologetically adult tone. Even though I saw it as a kid, I think this one is definitely not for kids. What's interesting about Heavy Metal is how it pulls from different art styles, with each segment feeling distinct. The soundtrack is packed with rock and heavy metal tracks from bands like DEVO, Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, and Journey, giving it a unique energy. Each of these films pushes the boundaries of what animated storytelling can do, whether through their themes, visual style, or just their ambition. They're all worth watching if you're looking for something that goes beyond the typical animated fare. That's it for this week's episode of The Video Store Podcast. Merry Christmas! Or, I should say, С Рождеством! Cuz we are going back to the motherland for this one! For our last movie of 2024, we are taking a look at Don Bluth's Anastasia, starring Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Hank Azaria, Angela Lansbury, and our favorite, Christopher Lloyd. This movie has it all - Russia, Trains, Music, Talking Albino Animals, Undead Rasputin, Limbo, Cool Shit. It's a bit of weird one. Throwbacktheaterpodcast@gmail.com
Happy December! We're taking it (mostly) easy this month, but stay tuned for a special episode coming soon. Meanwhile, The Johns take in as much December cheer as they can with Don Bluth's The Secret Of Nimh. Will we find shelter or die from sickness? Listen and find out!
An American Tail succeeds in delivering a visually spectacular and emotionally charged story but falters in execution. It's an ambitious work that tackles meaningful themes, yet its uneven pacing and tonal inconsistencies keep it from reaching its full potential. Despite its flaws, the film remains a beloved classic and an important entry in Don Bluth's filmography. For those who appreciate beautifully animated stories with heart, An American Tail is a journey worth taking, even if it's not without its bumps along the way.

With the haunted confines of October in the rear view mirror, but the warm, glowing dinners of Thanksgiving still weeks away, we decided to split the difference with a children's animated classic that's equal parts warm and bleak, jokey and disconcerting—All Dogs Go To Heaven, the 1989 Don Bluth feature starring Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, and Judith Barsi (rest in peace, gone too soon).

When did you as a child first get introduced to death? Was it when Memaw went to sleep and never woke up? Or was it when you good intentioned parents took you to see dinosaurs give birth and then be slaughtered? For a good handful, it seems like watching dinosaurs die in human-like ways was thought to be a good idea. Heck, by this time I think I had seen anthropomorphized mice, rats, dogs, aliens, etc all die in human ways... but for some children, they hit this one first, or close to it. Plus, Don Bluth did his Bluthiest to make it memorable. Join Joe, Ken, Andy, and Dan as they share their childhood memories of Land Before Time. Then, determine if it still holds up! (with "minimal" detractions)
This may be our most niche watch yet. In order to prove it wasn't a fever dream, Rach shows Ty a Don Bluth classic from her youth, Rock-A-Doodle. Is it the parallel Elvis story or the earworm hits that make this so memorable? Is this tied to an ancient, medieval tale? Where did Rach's childhood fear of owls originate from? And what is that cat saying??! All of this and more will be answered in this week's rockin adventure.
Defender of justice, truth, and the planet Earth. Ace is being attacked by the evil Commander Borf. Struggle with Dexter to regain his manhood. Destroy the Infanto-Ray. Defeat the evil Borf. Be valiant, space warrior, the fate of Earth is in your hands in the Don Bluth animated, RDI programmed, and Cinematronics produced Space Ace! Is Space Ace the best laserdisc arcade game? What The Simpsons voice actor first lent her voice to one of the game's characters? Who is “the strongest man… in the world?” By beating the game do you commit mass xenophobic infanticide?! Superstar doesn't even come close to encapsulate the guest creator for this episode. Since his last appearance in the tiger den, Tony Fleecs has been nothing short of a force of nature within the cultural spectrum and now he's back! And we're all better for it.Coming off the massively successful “Stray Dogs” from Image Comics, Tony is hitting the shelves with two beautifully-wild creator owned series: “Uncanny Valley” from Boom Studios and “Feral” from Image Comics. In a familiar vein to its predecessor, Stray Dogs, “Feral” softens your guard with that Don Bluth styling before sucking you down into the darkness of mystery and horror. It brings a bit of zest into a genre that sometimes becomes a bit structurally predictable within the comic medium. This time around the emphasis is cats. As a trio of indoor felines get stuck in the wilds of the outdoors . Already underprepared and overwhelmed things only escalate due to a rabies outbreak. American Tale meets Walking dead? Count BTR in! One of the beloved elements of the series is the continuation of variant covers paying homage to cult classic horror film posters and VHS covers. Not only proven to be a marketing success, but has quickly become a fan-favorite tradition with Fleecs' pet-thrillers at Image.Tony's other creator own project that is taking to the shelves alongside “Feral” is “Uncanny Valley.” And what a perfect name for such a unique and bold concept. If unfamiliar with the 70's hypothesis; “Uncanny Valley” is a proposed phenomenon theorizing the relation between the human likeness of an object and a viewer's affinity toward it.Imagine you're a kid… a kid that just doesn't quite fit in. Constantly haunted by the sensation, even visions, that you are different. It's a feeling that most of us, as people, experienced at some point in our youth. Then one day an unintroduced family member shows up; say it's your grandpa. Only he's a 2d cartoon character resembling Yosemite Sam and yeah, you are apart of something greater than you could of ever thought. The concept is bold and it works seamlessly. With variations in art styling, the reader is very quickly immersed into this very real world with very real people. So even when the cartoon surreal is interjected it's not only shocking and intriguing the high stakes still remain. It's brilliant in concept and execution. I can only imagine a film/tv deal is in the near future for “Uncanny Valley.”On top of the this Tony has other projects that are sharing space on the shelves; the on going series “Local Man” from Image Comics and a new Army of Darkness series “Forever” from Dynamite. It's the summer of FLEECS, so get to your local comic shop and celebrate his creative power! -T A note: The “NOW” is the resurgence of the independent creator through crowd sourcing and self-publishing availability. As the veil gets pulled back ever further and the predatory practices of corporate models get revealed, it is more and more important to support those who actually create the stories and art that we as consumers enjoy. So SUPPORT INDIE PROJECTS and their CREATORS. Help make the indies the mainstream. Even the smallest of gestures can be of the biggest help.Have you experienced the elusive and majestic energy of the Blue Tiger? Had a sighting in the wilderness of the eternal forest? Drank the blue milk of it's revenge? Then let the people know it exists! And check out “TAIGA”, Tadd's latest graphic novel with new pages weekly. We're two big dino fanboys, so we jumped (or should I say stomped?) at reviewing 'The Land Before Time' for this week's journey to 1988! It's the classic animated dinosaur movie, created by Don Bluth, Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, and George Lucas. But here's the thing... We aren't kids anymore, so will we still enjoy this film? Time to spin up a new arcade miniseries with the Laser(Time)Disc! The first game is a fantasy adventure where we become a valiant knight on a quest to rescue the fair princess from the clutches of an evil dragon. Sure, it's a tired formula, but this one has animation from Don Bluth! We are entering the Dragon's Lair. Hey kids, do you want to hear about the history of the analog optical disc format known as LaserDisc? What Dragon's Lair scene is the most obvious cash grab? Are birds the closest thing we have to angels? How much did Don Bluth and his studio charge to animate the prototype of the game? We respond to two listener questions: is there a game we thought we were good at but after seeing a pro play it felt like walking away, and what is an underrepresented game genre in the arcade? Join the Podouken Discord and ask your own questions, which could be included in a future episode, by following this link: discord.gg/k5vf2Jz

Last month marked the 112th Anniversary of the Titanic hitting the iceberg and as is tradition at "It Was a Thing on TV" we honor this event as only we can ...... by talking about a rapping dog. This Italian animated movie tries to tell the story of the Titanic while also ripping off multiple Disney and Don Bluth animated movies. Hilarity ensues? Possibly?
