They dive into the film's surprisingly dark themes, its impact on Disney's animation legacy, and why it became one of the studio's biggest hits of the decade. Plus, they discuss Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor's legendary performances, the film's abandoned 101 Dalmatians connection, and the surprising history behind The Rescuers Down Under. Brad and Jake tackle, but Brad hasn't seen any movies from 1943, so he recommends the acclaimed The Life & Times of Colonel Blimp. This unconventional epic spanning the Second Boer War and both World Wars was helmed by the Archers (Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger), and starred Roger Livesey, Anton Walbrook, and Deborah Kerr in knockout performances. Jake, with little in his 1943 arsenal, asked Brad to watch Disney's Saludos Amigos. But since it's more of a tourism ad than it is a movie, Brad took the opportunity to rank all 61 Disney Animated Features released at the time of this recording, from Snow White to Strange World. Other movies mentioned in this episode: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941), Bambi (1942), The Three Caballeros (1944), Make Mine Music (1946), Fun and Fancy Free (1947), Melody Time (1948), The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949), Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland (1951), Peter Pan (1953), Lady and the Tramp (1955), Sleeping Beauty (1959), One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), The Sword in the Stone (1963), The Jungle Book (1967), The Aristocats (1970), Robin Hood (1973), The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977), The Rescuers (1977), The Fox and the Hound (1981), The Secret of NIMH (1982), The Black Cauldron (1985), The Great Mouse Detective (1986), Oliver & Company (1988), All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989), The Little Mermaid (1989), The Rescuers Down Under (1990), Rock-a-doodle (1991), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Hercules (1997), Mulan (1998), Tarzan (1999), Fantasia 2000 (1999), Dinosaur (2000), The Emperor's New Groove (2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), Lilo & Stitch (2002), Treasure Planet (2002), Brother Bear (2003),Home on the Range (2004), Chicken Little (2005), Meet the Robinsons (2007), Bolt (2008), The Princess and the Frog (2009), Tangled (2010), Winnie the Pooh (2011), Wreck it Ralph (2012), Frozen (2013), Big Hero Six (2014), Zootopia (2016), Moana (2016), Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018), Frozen II (2019), Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), Encanto (2021), Strange World (2022)
Who's ready for a little outback adventure? Kevin and Chris revisit The Rescuers Down Under, the oft-forgotten Disney movie which sits snugly between The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, in the early days of Disney's animation renaissance. With Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor returning as those selfsame Rescuer mice Bernard and Bianca one last time (barring a new Bernard-only sequel—RIP Eva, but happy 94th Bob!), you hardly ever hear about this one, possibly because unlike its contemporaries, it's not a musical. Is its relative obscurity deserved? Or is this an under-heralded gem?

Listen as Mike and Tom discuss an eighth 1990 single sequel, The Rescuers Down Under! You'll hear our thoughts about this first fully digital animated film from Disney and the weird place it sits between the old and the new, the reputation this movie has and whether or not it's warranted or even actually true and how surprised we were by what we anticipated to be a bit of a slug.
Three eggs for the eagle queen, under the sky; seven for the poacher in his lair of stone; nine for the captured kid, begging to die; none for the bent bird with his back thrown, in the land of Australia where the sequel lies. One Will to rule them all, one Christian to wonder, "Why were there no more sequels after The Rescuers Down Under?" (Note: No Australians or Tolkien fans were hurt in the making of this podcast, although the Belgians and Swiss weren't so lucky).
We continue on our guest host train with a fan favorite, Annie! We sat down and spent some time with a group of mice determined to save a little boy in the Outback. The Rescuers Down Under was Disney's first sequel. Was this movie special enough to kick off what we now know is a certainty for Disney movies - the sequel? Or does this film need to be rescued? Following their deep-dive under the sea, film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Sam Summers are back on dry land to explore the very first canonical Walt Disney Animation Studios sequel: 1990's The Rescuers Down Under. In this episode, we're joined by Empire Magazine's news editor – and huge Down Under fan – Beth Webb as we dig into Bianca and Bernard's long-awaited second adventure, talking the film's environmental themes, exhilarating opening sequence, the revolutionary CAPS system that catapulted the studio into a 3D future, and why it's a vital puzzle piece in the Renaissance era. Plus, Sam takes a special field trip to the British Library, Ben reveals his love of mythical birds, there's much discussion of two horrible lizards, and we find out why Sam particularly related to Bernard's calamitous proposal attempts. Oh, and a warning: there are some truly terrible Australian accents on this episode. Our apologies to the entire nation of Oz. The first proper (not direct-to-video) sequel since The Rescuers Down Under sees us returning to the arcade before venturing into the unfathomable internet. Kaela, David and Sandy have a multiplayer discussion of this 2018 feature and discuss topics such as John Lasseter's departure, product placement without copyright fears, why clowns are annoying, and how Ralph's character is undermined this time around.
On the twenty-fifth edition of Pop Goes the Classics, Steve Riddle, Andy Atherton, and Mirandia Berthold continue their trek through the Disney animated features with The Rescuers Down Under. The first official sequel in Disney history, the trio discuss it being the first sequel, the US's fascination with Australian culture in the early 1990s, the vast Australian Outback, the majestic beauty of Marahute the eagle, Cody: Boy Adventurer, comparing Percival McLeach and Medusa as villains, the return of Bernard and Miss Bianca and their budding romance, the plights of Wilbur, the cool factor of Jake, the dramatic climax of the film, and whether the film would've worked better if it weren't a "Rescuers" film. So join Steve, Andy, and Mirandia as they have some interesting debates about this film and as the trio continue their trek through the Disney Renaissance.

It's another dealer's choice, and it's Sarah's birthday, so you can probably guess how this one turns out! To celebrate her big day, the hosts discuss the now-classic Disney animated offering of 1994 - Savannah Hamlet, a.k.a. The Lion King! A comprehensive trip through '80s and '90s Disney flicks is taken, touching on everything from The Black Cauldron to Hercules, with significant time spent comparing the four consecutive masterpieces cranked out by the House of Mouse - The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King. Many swipes are taken at the 2010's live-action remakes and their general pointlessness, while criticism also gets levied at the Academy for their many bone-headed Best Song choices from this group. Cameos from Robin Williams, Angela Lansbury, A Most Violent Year, The Rescuers Down Under, Jo Anne Worley, Beyonce, and special shout-outs to Moira Kelly abound, with very brief mentions of karaoke renditions of "Hakuna Matata" and the long-lost high school adaptation Antigone: The Musical! You will feel the love tonight, if that's your thing, in this twenty-ninth monkey's uncle of an episode of It Happened One Year!
