On the nineteenth installment of the Pop Goes The Classics series looking at the Disney animated features, Steve Riddle, Mirandia Berthold & Andy Atherton look at 1977's The Rescuers. They discuss the many aspects of the film including: the dynamic between Bernard & Bianca; Orville's piloting skills; whether or not Madame Medusa is great value Cruella DeVil; the crocodilian henchmen Brutus & Nero; the bravery of Evinrude; the villains plot to recover The Devil's Eye & the differences in watching the movie as an adult.

Often considered one of the few bright spots during a particularly inauspicious creative rut in Disney's history, The Rescuers marked a key transitional phase during the company's storied history. The Rescuers is the last Disney animated film to feature significant contributions from any of the Nine Old Men, the core animators from the studio's golden era. The Rescuers is the first Disney animated film to feature significant contributions from animators who'd be important to the Disney Renaissance period that'd begin with 1989's The Little Mermaid. The Rescuers is also the only Disney animated film to have Don Bluth as a credited animation director; his decision to acrimoniously split from Disney and start a competing animation studio was reached while working on this movie. Ryan is joined by Rachel for a breakdown of this often-underrated movie. The junkyard dogs of the business community are those misfits and mavericks, renegades and rebels, innovators and improvisors who know that traditional wisdom is often more tradition than wisdom. Lee Iacocca was a junkyard dog.The son of an immigrant hot-dog vendor, Iacocca was the visionary who gave us the Ford Mustang. He was later fired by Henry Ford II, a showdog, because Henry II said he didn't want Iacocca to become CEO. Aware that the time for his own retirement was approaching, Henry II made it clear that he wanted to turn the company over to his son Edsel II, then just 28. After being fired, Iacocca cheerfully went to work at Chrysler where he rescued that company from extinction by inventing the minivan. Later, when he told Chrysler's head of engineering that he needed a prototype LeBaron convertible to use in a TV ad, the showdog engineer told him how many months it would take to design one. A true dog of the junkyard, Iacocca smiled and said, “Just get a LeBaron and cut the top off. I need it tomorrow.” Focused on the outcome rather than the process, junkyard dogs are always messy.Junkyard dogs worry about accomplishment. Showdogs worry about appearances. When the weather is calm and the water is smooth, the showdog owns the horizon. But when the storm is upon you and people are about to die, you want a junkyard dog at the helm. In 1962, 16-year-old Miguel fled Cuba wearing a jacket his mother had hand-stitched from cleaning rags. He arrived alone in America. “Hamburger” was his only English word. Five years later Miguel married a teenage mother and adopted her 3-year-old son, little Jeffrey Jorgensen. Miguel gave Jeffrey the skill and confidence to survive and thrive. He also gave Jeffrey his proud Cuban name: Bezos. When Junkyard Jeffrey was 30, he borrowed money from friends and family to start a business in the garage of his rented home. He named that business after the largest river in South America. Perhaps you've heard of it. As a boy, one of Jeffrey's heroes was Walt Disney, the fourth of five children in a family so poor that two of his older brothers, sick of the constant work and poverty, ran away when Walt was just 4 years old. When Walt was 16, he tried to join the Navy so that he could serve in WWI but was turned down because of his age. He then tried unsuccessfully to join the Canadian Armed Forces. Finally, he was accepted as a Red Cross ambulance driver. Walt did not have an impressive résumé. Junkyard dogs rarely do.When the war was over, Disney's first company, Laugh-O-Gram, went bankrupt in Kansas City, so he moved to Hollywood where his first animated series, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, was a big success. Disney lost the rights to that character when his distributor cheated him. So Walt, ever the junkyard dog, started working on another animated character, a mouse. Perhaps you've heard of him, too. Disney Studios went on to make Lady and the Tramp, a movie about a showdog princess who falls in love with a junkyard dog. And then they made The Aristocats, a movie about an alley cat named O'Malley who rescues a housecat named Duchess who then falls in love with him. And when we saw The Rescuers a few years later, we all fell in love with a little junkyard girl named Penny when she stood up to the alligators of Madame Medusa. Now that I think about it, has there ever been a successful Disney film that didn't give us a misfit, junkyard dog to cheer for?For the record, (and I quite literally mean “the record,”) no individual has ever received as many Academy Awards as Walt Disney. In fact, no other person has ever been nominated for as many. I began contemplating today's memo when I paused the movie, Public Enemies, to transcribe a bit of dialogue between J. Edgar Hoover, that little showdog director of the FBI, and Melvin Purvis, his golden-boy agent who was tasked with bringing the murderous bank robber, John Dillinger, to...

There's nothing fishy about these thirteen things that you probably didn't know about The Little Mermaid, and were confident that you'll make them a part of your world. In the opening scene when King Triton arrives at the arena, Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and Kermit the Frog can be briefly seen in the crowd of sea-people as mermen when he passes over them. Originally, Sebastian was to have an English accent. It was lyricist/producer Howard Ashman who suggested he speak with a Caribbean accent. This opened the door to calypso-style numbers like "Under the Sea", which won the Academy Award. The character of Ursula was based on drag performer and John Waters regular Divine. Her personality and some of her actions were also largely inspired by a previous Disney villain, Madame Medusa from Disney's The Rescuers. It's possible that Prince Eric could be related to Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty. In the dining room in Eric's castle on Ariel's first evening on land, there is a painting hanging on the wall. Ariel was quite deliberately made a redhead in order to distinguish her from Daryl Hannah's character in Splash. "Part of Your World" was nearly cut; Jeffrey Katzenberg felt that it was "boring", as well as being too far over the heads of the children for whom it was intended. At a test screening, children were restless during the song which did not have finished animation - in particular one child sat in front of Katzenberg, spilled his popcorn, and was more interested in picking it up than watching the sequence. After trying with an adult audience, the song was considered a greater success and so the song was left in the film. The Little Mermaid had been a Disney property since 1941. Walt Disney planned to include the much darker Hans Christian Andersen version of the tale in a planned anthology film of the fantasy author's works. After a bitter strike by the animators that same year and the increasing focus on wartime propaganda shorts, the initial version of The Little Mermaid was shelved in 1943. Ariel's rendition of "Part of Your World" set a precedent for subsequent Disney animated musicals where the protagonist would vocalize his or her desires early in the film. The song was referred to by Howard Ashman as the "I Want" song. Deleted scenes: An extended "Fathoms Below" sequence in which it is revealed that Ursula is Triton's sister; alternate version of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" explaining why Ursula was banished by Triton; a scene just before the concert in which Sebastian finds out Ariel is missing; extended scene of Sebastian lost in Eric's castle; Sebastian giving additional advice to Ariel at bedtime; and the fight with Ursula to the ending with no dialogue. This was the first Disney film to receive an Academy Award since Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), though other films had been nominated. Ariel's body type and personality were based on Alyssa Milano. The effect of her hair underwater was based on footage of astronaut Sally Ride in weightless conditions. This was the last Disney animated feature to use hand-painted cels and analog camera and film work. 1,000 different colors were used on 1,100 backgrounds. Over one million drawings were done in total. This week Aly gives us a fairly uncomplicated and happy author biography. This movie was actually based on a series of books by Margery Sharp! Sarrah takes us on a journey this week. We learn about how one of the animators based a character on his (ex) wife, that this was the last movie for a few of our 9 old men, we see some new animation faces join the team, we learn about a potential movie that was being discussed that may or may not have been about Nazi Monkeys, and we (of course) talk about the naked lady picture. This week on We Want The D, Vicky, Nolan and Jill had the unenviable task of attempting to talk about Disney's animated film THE RESCUERS without completey ignoring it in favour of its far superior sequel. Luckily, it's not as if this episode's movie is bad or anything (aside from the songs, at least) - it's just not as good as what would come later. But considering this is the last Disney picture to come out before the so-called 'Dark Ages' there's actually quite a lot to love. Miss Bianca the mouse is every bit as suave and stylish as you would expect from such a fashion icon, Madame Medusa is every bit as villainous and grotesque as you would expect from a classic Disney baddie, and Penny the orphan is just as adorable and orphan-y as the best of the many, many Disney orphans. And if nothing else, we're now one step closer to talking about one of best sequels in movie history. So join us, D Lovers, and discover just what two little mice can do.

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat? Wouldn't you say our trivia's complete? There's nothing fishy about these thirteen things that you probably didn't know about The Little Mermaid, and were confident that you'll make them a part of your world. 13. In the opening scene when King Triton arrives at the arena, Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and Kermit the Frog can be briefly seen in the crowd of sea-people as mermen when he passes over them. 12. Originally, Sebastian was to have an English accent. It was lyricist/producer Howard Ashman who suggested he speak with a Caribbean accent. This opened the door to calypso-style numbers like "Under the Sea", which won the Academy Award. 11. The character of Ursula was based on drag performer and John Waters regular Divine. Her personality and some of her actions were also largely inspired by a previous Disney villain, Madame Medusa from Disney's The Rescuers. 10. It's possible that Prince Eric could be related to Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty. In the dining room in Eric's castle on Ariel's first evening on land, there is a painting hanging on the wall. 9. Ariel was quite deliberately made a redhead in order to distinguish her from Daryl Hannah's character in Splash. 8. "Part of Your World" was nearly cut; Jeffrey Katzenberg felt that it was "boring", as well as being too far over the heads of the children for whom it was intended. At a test screening, children were restless during the song which did not have finished animation - in particular one child sat in front of Katzenberg, spilled his popcorn, and was more interested in picking it up than watching the sequence. After trying with an adult audience, the song was considered a greater success and so the song was left in the film. 7. The Little Mermaid had been a Disney property since 1941. Walt Disney planned to include the much darker Hans Christian Andersen version of the tale in a planned anthology film of the fantasy author's works. After a bitter strike by the animators that same year and the increasing focus on wartime propaganda shorts, the initial version of The Little Mermaid was shelved in 1943. 6. Ariel's rendition of "Part of Your World" set a precedent for subsequent Disney animated musicals where the protagonist would vocalize his or her desires early in the film. The song was referred to by Howard Ashman as the "I Want" song. 5. Deleted scenes: An extended "Fathoms Below" sequence in which it is revealed that Ursula is Triton's sister; alternate version of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" explaining why Ursula was banished by Triton; a scene just before the concert in which Sebastian finds out Ariel is missing; extended scene of Sebastian lost in Eric's castle; Sebastian giving additional advice to Ariel at bedtime; and the fight with Ursula to the ending with no dialogue. 4. This was the first Disney film to receive an Academy Award since Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), though other films had been nominated. 3. Ariel's body type and personality were based on Alyssa Milano. The effect of her hair underwater was based on footage of astronaut Sally Ride in weightless conditions. 2. This was the last Disney animated feature to use hand-painted cels and analog camera and film work. 1,000 different colors were used on 1,100 backgrounds. Over one million drawings were done in total. 1. Several elements from the original Hans Christian Andersen story were kept in the movie, including: Ariel being the youngest of many sisters, the secret white marble statue, the polypi along the entrance to Ursula's cavern, and Ariel asking what she'll have left without her voice and the sea-witch's response. However, in the original story, Ariel doesn't turn back into a mermaid at the end. When the sun rises on the last day she turns to foam and dies.
