Another beloved children's movie that was inspired by a popular children's series. Originally published in the 1950's, The Rescuers is a series of books that follow Miss Bianca and Bernard as they save the helpless. Celebrate Soulfully invites guests to gather for experiences that honor Black heritage and culture. At Disneyland, Celebrate Gospel will move from Stage 17 at Disney California Adventure to the Fantasyland Theater on February 19th with award-winning Gospel singer, actor, and fashion designer Kierra Sheard, along with a capella Gospel group Sacred Groove. Grammy-award winners Jonathan McReynolds and Mali Music perform on February 26th, along with The Singers of Soul. Both weekends will feature Southern California community choirs from 3-7pm. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2022/01/celebrate-soulfully-at-disney-parks-this-february-in-honor-of-black-culture-and-heritage/ A lot of smaller updates and refreshes are happening around the resort. On Main Street, the Crystal Arcade is covered in scaffolding and getting a new paint job. Over at the Rivers of America, the water jet and pyrotechnic pits are drained again and are being worked on in preperation for a return of Fantasmic! The Haunted Mansion has returned from being taken over for the holiday season. Splash Mountain has closed for it's annual refurbishment, not anything related to the upcoming Princess and the Frog re-theme. it's a small world also closed to remove the holiday overlay that almost didn't happen this last year because of flooding. Steelwork continues to go up for the upcoming Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway, including hills taking shape on the top of the show building to bring back the cartoony hillside. The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is getting final touches before the lagoon is refilled and the attraction can reopen. – https://www.micechat.com/313478-disneyland-news-character-cost-construction-update/ Over in Disney California Adventure, some of the facades in Hollywood Land are getting a facelift, while in Paradise Bay the World of Color infrastructure continues to be worked on. The platforms have been raised and lowered a lot recently, while scaffholding is still in place while the projection towers are still being rebuilt. Over at the Disneyland Hotel, the new Disney Vacation Club tower is coming along with foundation being poured. – https://www.micechat.com/313478-disneyland-news-character-cost-construction-update/ Last week auditions were posted for an upcoming show at Disneyland. The Tale of the Lion King was hosting auditions for the show that will be at the Fantasyland Theater this summer. Rehearsals begin in April, with performances starting in early summer. This helps us get an idea of when to expect the show to return to the resort. – https://www.mouseplanet.com/13107/Disneyland_Resort_Update_for_January_31__February_6_2022 Weeklyteers who are in love with coffee, especially cold brews that the parks have been offering lately should head over to the Hungry Bear Restaurant soon! A new Snickerdoodle Cold Brew is available for $5.99. This version is topped with whipped cream and cookie dust, making it a bit more sweet than most cinnamon cold brews. This has been compared to the cinnamon-y coffee drinks at places like Starbucks. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2022/01/30/review-why-this-disney-coffee-makes-us-want-to-time-travel-back-to-2019/ Fans of sour cherry are in luck! Two Disneyland classics now have the option of being topped with sour cherry sugar. The first is a cream cheese filled pretzel, with the sour cherry sugar on top, the other is a churro with the same sour cherry sugar, with the option of cream cheese dipping sauce on the side for $1 more. For the pretzel, the Disney Food Blog reported that the flavors worked well together, but are incredibly sweet. Guests can grab one at the Tomorrowland Pretzel Cart for $7.75. The churro was better than the pretzel, and if you're going for a more mellow flavor, skip the sweet dipping sauce. The churro is at the Tomorrowland Churro Cart for $5.75. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2022/01/30/review-the-weird-flavor-combination-at-disneyland-that-actually-works/ Happy Lunar New Year! This year's celebration is proving to be quite popular judging by the lines for food being so long. Part of the slow down is the fewer booths than the other food festivals. – https://www.micechat.com/313478-disneyland-news-character-cost-construction-update/ You don't have to wait in long lines at the Lunar New Year Celebration to get one of the highlights! MiceChat has posted a garlic noodle copycat recipe. The meal takes about 20 minutes to make and takes about 10 ingredients. Basically, you cook the pasta and toss the other ingredients in a pan and cook, combining and then eat! – https://www.micechat.com/313441-the-disney-dish-disney-california-adventure-lunar-new-year-garlic-noodles/ Tomorrowland has some new merchandise that is wonderful! The new collection features the attractions of Tomorrowland, like Space Mountain and the PeopleMover. There is even a design for the land itself. The Tomorrowland Hooded long-sleeved t-shirt is $59.99 and has Tomorrowland in blue on the front, with drawings of past attractions as a pattern all over. The PeopleMover shirt, Tage's favorite, is a gray t-shirt with dark blue borders, the PeopleMover logo on the front, and a sketch like design of the Disneyland PeopleMover on the bottom for $29.99. Finally, there is a Space Mountain t-shirt, which is black with Space Mountain, Flights Departing Daily From Tomorrowland on the front, with the exterior of the attraction over the text for $24.99. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2022/01/photos-new-tomorrowland-attraction-apparel-flies-into-disneyland-resort/ With Mardi Gras coming up, there is a new dessert at the French Market to celebrate. The Mardi Gras Cocunut cake is $7.99 and has three layers of sponge cake in purple, yellow, and green, with coconut cream between the layers, and pastry cream dusted with coconut flakes on the outside. This is a limited time item, so act quick if this sounds delicious to you! – https://dlnewstoday.com/2022/01/review-mardi-gras-coconut-cake-is-worthy-of-the-royal-court-at-disneyland-park/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2022/01/review-new-strawberry-lemon-cake-at-plaza-inn-at-disneyland-park/ Valentines Day is just around the corner and there are plenty of things to do in the parks, as well as at Downtown Disney and the Hotels of the Disneyland Resort. Specials from Black Tap Craft Burgers & Shakes, California Sole, Kayla's Cake, Lovepop, Pandora, and more are all offering specials. At the hotels, the Tenaya Stone Spa has a Rose and Roses Foot Treatment, the Grand Californian lobby has treats at the holiday cart, the GCH Craftsman Bar will have an assortment of coctails, and more. In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Patricia and Arun start a themed month looking back at hidden gems starting off with the 1990 animated Disney movie The Rescuers Down Under which is a sequel to the 1977 film The Rescuers. The movie features a young Australian boy named Cody who befriends an eagle Marahute who is laying three eggs. Cody meets up with a poacher named McLeach who is looking for the eagle to sell it for a high price. He kidnaps Cody for him to reveal Marahute's location and a mouse calls the Rescue Aid Society in New York City. Bernard and Miss Bianca take on the mission to go to Australia to rescue Cody with Bernard wanting to propose to Miss Bianca, an Australian Outback mouse named Jake as their brave companion, and the albatross Wilbur going through many obstacles from a busted back to protecting the eagle eggs from McLeach. When the movie premiered, it made only $47.4 million dollars due to being overshadowed by Home Alone which came out around the same time. It's considered the black sheep of the Disney Renaissance films since it came out after The Little Mermaid, but before Beauty and the Beast and had no musical moments with memorable songs. Critics have criticized the lack of story, but praised it due to its beautiful groundbreaking animation with The CAPS System and epic moments with action and atmosphere compared to its predecessor. Viewers appreciated The Rescuers Down Under when it was released on VHS and DVD even if they didn't watch or remember The Rescuers. It currently has a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. With The Rescuers Down Under seeing as a cult classic, what did Patricia and Arun think of it? Does it hold up over 30 years later? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

They were so big that it took more than one continent to contain them. These thirteen things that you probably didn't know about The Rescuers Down Under, should satisfy your cravings for squeaky sleuths until the inevitable live action version comes out. This was Eva Gabor's last film before her death in 1995. A third Rescuers movie was planned for 1996, but after her death, this and all future Rescuers movies were scrapped. In the original Rescuers film, the albatross Orville was voiced by Jim Jordan, who died two years before this film released. The producers didn't want to replace Jordan, so Orville was replaced with the character's brother Wilbur, voiced by John Candy. This is a reference to the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, the inventors and pilots of the first functional airplane. Disney's first animated sequel. This would later carry on with Fantasia 2000 and Winnie the Pooh, whilst the rest of the sequels would be straight to video. This was the first 100% digital feature film ever made. The animation and backgrounds were done traditionally but all of the coloring, many effects, and the final film printing was all done digitally. This was also the first film produced with Disney's Academy Award-winning "CAPS" production system, which cut the production time down by at least six months. On its initial release, this film was preceded by the Mickey Mouse short subject The Prince and the Pauper. Interestingly enough, this was only the second Mickey Mouse short made since the 1950s, with the first being Mickey's Christmas Carol, which was made to accompany the 1983 re-release of The Rescuers. The twisted version of "Home on the Range" that McLeach sings was not performed by George C. Scott. It was instead sung by the voice of Joanna, Frank Welker. This is the least successful film released during the Disney Renaissance between 1989-1999. After it only grossed $27,931,461 from that weekend's box office, Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg pulled all television advertisements for the film. Opening on the same weekend as Home Alone, which went on to gross more than ten times as much, did not help its cause. This financial failure discouraged Disney from releasing subsequent non-computer-animated sequels in theaters with very few exceptions. Originally Wilbur's calendar was to have a picture of Bart Simpson from The Simpsons; which can be seen in the original animatic. A lifelong Disney fan, Bruce Broughton jumped at the chance to compose the score and turned down an offer to score Home Alone to work on this film. Is the last Disney Film to be accompanied by a Featurette that's over 20 minutes long, up until Pixar's Coco 27 years later. The first Disney animated feature to use fully-rendered CG backgrounds. Storyboard artist Joe Ranft constantly bolstered the creative morale of his crew, but rarely drew storyboard sequences himself. In addition to this, Ranft entered creative disagreements with the studio management and marketing executives, including one disagreement where he optioned for the casting of an Aboriginal Australian child actor to voice Cody, which was overridden with the decision to cast "a little white blonde kid." Noting the rise of Americans becoming more environmentally conscious, this marks as the studio's first film since Bambi to have an animal rights and environmental message. It's a banner day for the Sweeties as we finally got all the wires and do-dads to configure our DVD player to work! With this old-fangled technology we're now able to watch our favorite Disney classics, and so we pressed our luck at the library to see what Disney oldies and came up with Disney's first animated sequel The Rescuers Down Under! We were HUGE fans of this growing up, watching the bootlegged copy our dad recorded from the TV on the regs, and we credit this movie and Crocodile Dundee with teaching us everything we know about Australia! From 1990, The Rescuers Down Under tells the story of sweet little Cody, a bird lover kidnapped by a the terrifying poacher McLeach who is looking for a rare golden eagle. Bernard and Miss Bianca are two mice from the US who come to save the day as part of the Rescue Aid Society, a worldwide organization run by rodents, that helps kids in trouble.  Even though we hate mice, gosh are those little buddies cute.  We'll chat about all our B-list Disney favs, talk about memorable scenes and one we randomly quote a lot (Pea Soup!), and ruminate on how Disney was able to convince us that there was such a thing as a Golden Eagle the size of a truck.     Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon.

Judgement Day. Empire Strike Back. The Dark Knight. The Godfather Part II. All of these movies have something in common: they are sequels that far surpass the original. But first on that list should be Disney's THE RESCUERS DOWN UNDER, which continues to follow the adventures of the glamourous Miss Bianca and the dependable Bernard as they travel around the globe, saving children from larger-than-life danger. Down Under just does everything better - the adventure is bigger, the sidekicks are funnier and more charming, and the villains - oh my god the villains. Add in some gorgeous, groundbreaking animation and its easy to see why this overlooked gem of the early Disney Renaissance is a beloved classic to those in the know. And now you are too, dear listeners.

This week on We Want The D, Vicky, Nolan and Jill had the unenviable task of attempting to talk about Disney's animated film THE RESCUERS without completey ignoring it in favour of its far superior sequel. Luckily, it's not as if this episode's movie is bad or anything (aside from the songs, at least) - it's just not as good as what would come later. But considering this is the last Disney picture to come out before the so-called 'Dark Ages' there's actually quite a lot to love. Miss Bianca the mouse is every bit as suave and stylish as you would expect from such a fashion icon, Madame Medusa is every bit as villainous and grotesque as you would expect from a classic Disney baddie, and Penny the orphan is just as adorable and orphan-y as the best of the many, many Disney orphans. And if nothing else, we're now one step closer to talking about one of best sequels in movie history. So join us, D Lovers, and discover just what two little mice can do.
