You remember Richard Cobbett, right? From our scintillating Christmas special of Open Crowd Source back in 2015? No? Then you might remember him from other things, such as the talk about comedy in games, or the interview with Rihanna Pratchett, or the panel about games journalism, from AdventureX 2016. Perhaps you even recognize him byContinue reading S4E7 – Have You Ever Been Al Lowe’d?
Next weekend, all three of us — Gareth, Frederik and myself — will be in London at Goldsmiths University, participating in this year’s AdventureX conference. This week Tom and Pip are joined by Richard Cobbett. Tom’s been playing LA Cops, which just released with a short but sweet early access build. This spurs us to talk about Sunless Sea and the two’s different approaches to story driven early access games. Pip has been having a survival horror week, building arm effigies in The Forest and getting non metaphorical cold feet in The Long Dark. Meanwhile Richard has been beating Phileas Fogg’s record in Around the World in 80 74 days. Also we can’t stop talking about Kim Kardashian and are not sorry. Show notes inside....(Read more...)
As a relative outsider, I see Notch as an almost-mythical figure. Here is a being who created a system of divine rules upon which millions have built their own worlds. Maybe that's a bit dramatic, but it seems fair to say that Notch has a sizable following of people who are very invested in the game as well as his public image as a lawyer-trolling, Facebook-hating advocate for independent games. But what happens when a figure like this becomes the public face of a controversial decision, such as the recent move to crack down on the selling of in-game stat and equipment boosts? This week we use Richard Cobbett's column as a starting point to talk about celebrity culture, games as platforms, and kids these days. - Subscribe to the EXP Podcast via iTunes - Find the show on Stitcher - Here's the show's stand-alone feed - Listen to the podcast in your browser by left-clicking here. This week’s podcast is a bit of a lane pushing special. Afterwards Tom tries and fails to explain exactly why he was running around London hacking things with his […]
Welcome to the very 27th episode of the Not a Game podcast, a podcast that is supposedly about games but this week is also largely about accents and Jaffa Cakes. We do not apologise for this development. This week we’re joined by Richard Cobbett and Alice Liang for a twitter question medley,so you only have […]
When you're talking about fear in games then it's easy to get focused on specific topics, such as survival horror, but to do so is to ignore the wider context that fear has. If you're going to examine the topic properly then it isn't just a conversation about the fear we uncover within games, but also the fears we bring to the games we play. That's something games journalist and arachnaphobe Richard Cobbett know all about. In this week's episode Richard talks about why spiders are used as default enemies in some genres, the methods he uses to overcome come his fear and why spiders are scary in some games but not others. Unlimited Hyperbole is a weekly podcast about videogames and the stories we tell about them. The show is divided into seasons of five episodes, each with a topic that’s used as a prompt when interviewing special guests. This season we’re talking about “Fear Itself” – but for more information about the podcast or to download bonus materials, check http://joemartinwords.com/2012/07/16/unlimited-hyperbole-7/
Richard Cobbett bravely joins Rob for a conversation with Achron creator Chris Hazard, despite the fact that Richard is weak as a kitten and sick as a dog. They talk about the difficulties indies face in the RTS genre, whether reviewers should make allowances for coarse but inspired games, and how Hazardous software has reacted to weak reviews. They also dig deep on Achron's mechanics and how they developed over the course of the project. Along the way, they prove once again that Achron is one of 2011's most fascinating RTS games. This is kind of a "deep-end of the pool" discussion. You might find these resources helpful: Giant Bomb's "quick look" video Richard's RPS review
