It's been a long time since we did a Doctor Who Family Tree episode. These are episodes where we find people with Doctor Who connections, working together on other projects, and here, we focus on 1984 BBC children's drama The Box of Delights. It starred Patrick Troughton, with a number of noteable Who alumni working on it too, most notably composer Roger Limb. Kenny is joined by Roy Gill to discuss their love of the show, and Chris Chapman, who has produced a new documentary on The Box of Delights for the 40th anniversary blu-ray, joins them to talk about it.

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, John Dorney joins us in northern Scotland to investigate the disappearance of the Ninth Legion — only to discover that there are things here even more terrible than the Roman army, things that can only be fought with trust and empathy and music. It's The Eaters of Light. Notes and links Crash (2004) starts with a voiceover by Don Cheadle, laying out the terms of the metaphorical link between car crashes and human interactions generally. It's not a very popular movie, not only because of its superficial approach to issues of race, but also because it won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Picture instead of Brokeback Mountain. Richard mentions American YA fiction writer Scott Westerfield, particularly the Uglies series with its teenage protagonist. He also mentions William Golding's 1954 novel Lord of the Flies, where a group of schoolchildren stranded without adults on a deserted island, quickly revert to savagery. Brian Vernel was born in 1990, so he was 26 or 27 when he played Lucius in this episode, and 32 when he played far-right extremist Curly in the first season of Slow Horses in 2022. Kar's speech about the depredations of the Roman Army is taken from the Agricola by Tacitus, a short biography of his father-in-law, chronicling, among other things his campaigns in northern Britain. Tacitus depicts the Caledonian leader Calgacus making the speech just before the Battle of Mount Graupius, in which his forces were defeated by the Romans. You can read the speech in translation here. This week's monster is based on very common depictions found in Pictish carvings of an animal called the Pictish Beast. Some depictions are found among the carvings seen in this episode. Tania Bell is a companion to the Eighth Doctor, first appearing in Big Finish's Stranded in 2020 — the first transgender companion to appear in Doctor Who. She is played by Rebecca Root. John has written five stories for Tania: her second story Wild Animals, as well as The Long Way Round, What Just Happened?, Best Year Ever and Flatpack (in which she meets Christopher Ecclston's Ninth Doctor). John writes for Michelle Gomez as Missy in Divorced, Beheaded, Regenerated and in Too Many Masters. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, we're huddling with Toby Hadoke in a tent in a cave set somewhere on Mars, wondering what that massive gun is for and trying to decide which terrifying Imperial Majesty to give our fealty to. It's Empress of Mars. Notes and links Lucifer Box is the protagonist of three spy novels by Mark Gatiss set in the early twentieth century, The Vesuvius Club (2004), The Devil in Amber (2006) and Black Butterfly (2008). Empress of Mars first aired on 10 June 2017. Two days earlier, there was a general election, in which Theresa May's Conservative government was returned to power with a slightly reduced majority. May had become prime minister of the UK in July 2016 and had begun the process of leaving the EU by triggering Article 50 in March 2017. The UK formally left the EU on 31 January 2020, just two days before Praxeus aired. One of the clear inspirations for the premise here is H G Wells's novel The First Men in the Moon (1901), in which a penniless writer and his eccentric inventor neighbour travel to the moon and meet its indigenous inhabitants, who are unimpressed with what they hear about our social and political systems on earth. A film adaptation First Men in the Moon (1969) was co-written by Quatermass's Nigel Kneale and featured music by Laurie Johnson, who will be familiar to fans of The Three Handed Game. There was also a television adaptation in 2010, written by Mark Gatiss and starring both him and Rory Kinnear. Other inspirations include Edgar Rice Burroughs's John Carter novels, starting with A Princess of Mars in 1912, in which a Civil War veteran from Virginia is transported to Mars and becomes involved in various wars and areopolitical struggles. There are eleven books in the series, culminating in John Carter of Mars in 1964. And just one more possible inspiration: She (1887), by H Rider Haggard, about the search for a white sorceress who rules a tribe in a remote part of Africa. Katy Manning played an Ice Warrior queen for Big Finish, in a box set called The Second Doctor Adventures: Beyond the War Games, released in 2020. According to Toby, Anthony Calf, who plays Godsacre here, was also in The Visitation. He played Charles, the son of John Savident's Squire in the opening scenes of Part 1, and it was indeed his first television role. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.bsky.social and Todd is at @toddbeilby.bsky.social; Richard is on X as @RichardLStone, and Toby is @TobyHadoke. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can find out everything about Toby Hadoke at his website tobyhadoke.com, and you can catch up with his podcasts at Toby Hadoke's Time Travels. A publication date for the first volume of Toby's book series on Quatermass will be announced very soon. You can follow Flight Through Entirety on Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as on X and Facebook. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll invade your backyard, set up some tents, and start insistently ordering you to make us cups of tea. VISION ON SOUND live on stage at WHOOVERVILLE 15 with TOMMY KNIGHT, CHRIS CHAPMAN, & JASON QUINN. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on September 8th 2024. Whilst VISION ON SOUND is a show where we do like to try to explore the wider world of archive television, and is not just about one specific television series that gets a lot of far better coverage in other places, it's hard not to admit that DOCTOR WHO was definitely the gateway into that wider world for a lot of people who grew up watching it. It is just one of those shows, I guess, that happens to have a lot of documentation written about it, and a lot of people who love it enough to want to find out more about it. Running on television for more than sixty years probably helps a little bit with that, too. This week, thanks to show regulars STEVE HATCHER and ANDREW-MARK THOMPSON, for the third year in a row, I was invited to record an edition of VISION ON SOUND live on stage at WHOOVERVILLE 15 the one-day DOCTOR WHO convention that they organise and run in conjunction with both their own fan group THE WHOOVERS, and with THE QUAD in Derby, which this year took place on the 31st of August 2024. I'm delighted to say that, for our afternoon VISION ON SOUND recording session this year, I was able to be joined on stage in Cinema 2 by TOMMY KNIGHT, the actor who, alongside other roles, played LUKE SMITH in THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES. Alongside him, I was able to welcome CHRIS CHAPMAN, the television producer/director, and writer for Big Finish Productions, who is currently one of the team producing new content for the popular DOCTOR WHO COLLECTION Blu-Ray sets. We were also very lucky to be joined by JASON QUINN who is the latest editor for DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE, and between us I think that we managed to have an interesting session discussing DOCTOR WHO in a slightly wider context, and I hope that the audience on the day enjoyed it, and, hopefully, those of you who are now tuning in will enjoy it too. You'll also hear STEVE introducing me at the beginning, but, because he is always having a very busy day when the event is running, he does have to slip quietly away to leave us to just get on with it. As ever, I'm always very moved and humbled that they are prepared to take that leap of faith in what we do here on VISION ON SOUND, and appreciate the trust that they have in me to do whatever it is that I do, and I can't thank them enough, once again, for allowing me to take part. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Dr. Gordon ElderUpper Cervical Chiropractic deals with the brainstem. It is the most basic part of the brainstem is what we call the lizard brain or the most primitive part that deals with staying alive; our breathing, our pulse, blood pressure, and things like that. And the brainstem is affected by the alignment of bones and nerves, and tissues at the very top of our neck, right underneath the head. The mouth plays a more intimate and intricate role than I had realized in the health of the upper cervical spine. The neck and the jaw affect each other anatomically and neurologically. Both neck and jaw issues can cause posture problems that affect the whole body.Sometimes the Upper Cervical Chiropractor and the Dentist need to work together for the best results. This is at the very forefront right now of treatment, of therapy, of science. Not many people do work that works together with an upper cervical chiropractic specialist and a dentist. Most doctors don't even know how important the relationship between the mouth and the brain stem, and the upper cervical spine is. It is outside the mindset of most Doctors. At the Blair Chiropractic Clinic, Craniocervical Junction Specialists the future will be working with Dentists. The best resource for this kind of cooperation is Dr. Chris Chapman in Salt Lake City at theliftclinic.com. Five and Nine: Tarot, Work and Economic Justice

A month ago, artist and creative technologist M Eifler was laid off from their job, one of nearly 200,000 layoffs this year alone. M discusses the uncertainty and anxiety they've experienced since the layoff and shares how they have been using art and LinkedIn to document their journey. From ritual to song to visualizing the experience of stress, they share wisdom on navigating the ups and downs—while also finding a new path forward.M is the creator of Art School From Bed, an online series that explores how technology can be used to solve problems around disability. They discuss their work in disability and access, including their role as a lay leader in a Jewish community in San Francisco. The episode ends with a tarot reading using their very own deck, the Mixed Signals Deck, and we close with an offering from M on the theme of rest, which feels particularly relevant given the new moon, solar eclipse, and Mercury Retrograde cycle happening at the time of recording.Season 3 is all about rest. In a time of extended crisis, permacrisis and polycrisis, taking time to decompress is not just a benefit but a necessity. Chris Chapman is executive director at Capital Analytics and the founder and host of the Next Level Minds podcast. Chris has been doing sales since he was a kid when he went door-to-door trying to sell services that might help the busy homeowners in his neighborhood. In his first post-college job in IT staffing, he learned how to  build relationships with IT managers, CTOs and VPs. Then he transitioned into his current role with Capital Analytics, which publishes local business magazines. He project manages the development of each publication in his region, but he also then sells digital ads and event sponsorships to CEOs who are featured in the publication.   It's not easy to immediately get in touch with a CEO. Chris learned the hard way that you need to build relationships with the gatekeepers around the CEO. Treating the admin staff like the enemy isn't going to get you very far. If you're trying to reach the CEO of a smaller company– say 50 people or less– you can sometimes get lucky by dialing directly very early in the AM or after 5:00 PM and they'll answer their own phone. With larger companies, there are likely to be more touch points before you can reach the CEO. Be prepared to talk to at least 4 to 5 people before you win that call. When cold calling doesn't work and you need to do a drop by, you have to go in with confidence and kindness. Sometimes, you'll get lucky and the CEO will have a moment to meet; if not, you can leave behind a business card and a good impression.    When you're dealing with busy CEOs, you have to build rapport and add value quickly. Before he makes a cold call, he does all the research to learn everything he can about the CEO. He looks for mutual connections, finds out where they went to school, what other companies they've worked for, etc. He also taps into his network of other CEOs that he's worked with and exploits the FOMO effect. “This CEO is getting in on this opportunity. I'd hate for you to miss out on this.”    It's important, however, not to lead with rapport-building strategies. In fact, Chris and Anthony both agree that you have to lead with why you're calling. Get the point across about what you're trying to sell. Once they're warm to the idea, then you can work on building an authentic, personal connection. As he gathers rapport-building information about the prospect, he tracks every detail in his CRM. So when a CEO says she's gotta go because she has a tee time, he makes a note in the CRM that indicates the CEO has an interest in golf. Next time they meet, Chris can reference that in their conversation. For reps who aren't great at CRM management, he suggests putting rapport notes in the calendar invite to keep track.    Once you get that meeting with a CEO, Chris says selling to them is not much different than selling to a lower level executive. People are people. No matter who you're selling to, it's about building relationships with a person and helping find the proper solutions to the problems they experience. That really doesn't change based on the size of the company or the title of your prospect. And no matter who you're meeting with, pay them the respect of being prepared and dressing for success.   Chris always asks his prospects to rank on a scale of 1 to 10 how strongly they are considering his offer. He's essentially immediately asking for feedback, and he's open to accepting it whether it's good or bad. When he has that information, he asks what's holding them back from getting to a 10. That arms him with the information he needs to get them closer to a deal.   Chris' Next Level Minds podcast is a top-ranked business podcast that has been listened to in over 45 different countries. The podcast is dedicated to those who want to reach a massive next level in their career, business, or personal life. He interviews people who are successful in a variety of fields– founders, entrepreneurs, athletes, authors. He asks them to share their journey to success. He's learned two important things about successful people. First, they remain humble, no matter how successful they become. When you lose that, you sometimes lose the habits that got you to success in the first place. The other thing he has learned is that the most successful people never stop learning. They all have an insatiable desire to learn and to be masters of their craft, no matter what that might be. Chris Chapman on LinkedIn Next Level Minds podcast Chris Chapman on Instagram
