Most people who know the Enneagram focus on their type number. But new research suggests your survival instinct — self-preservation, social, or sexual — is actually the more useful tool for understanding your personal style. In this episode I break down what each enneagram instinct looks like in the wardrobe, what images you're drawn to reveal about your instinct, and how I use that information when working with women on their signature style. Mili Velikova has a video on style vs taste that's worth your time before you listen to this episode. She names something real: what you're drawn to and what you actually wear with confidence are not always the same thing. And the gap between them is a genuine source of wardrobe frustration. What I've noticed is that the gap almost always has a cognitive function explanation underneath it. Your four MBTI letters are a starting point. The function stack underneath them is where the answer actually lives. That's what episode 130 is about. If you've ever loved something on the hanger and felt off in it all day, this is the missing piece. Let's connect! To suggest a podcast topic, send email to hello@signaturestylesystems.com. Most people think caring about appearance conflicts with spiritual depth, but actually the body is an instrument of worship. In this episode, I unpack three ideas that reframe beauty as devotion rather than vanity: the body as instrument of worship, what Jesus actually said about clothes, and how your personal aesthetic is something to discover rather than construct. If you have ever felt pressure to conform to someone else's idea of what a serious or faithful woman should look like, this episode gives you a different framework entirely. Let's connect! Your region was already shaping what you wore, what felt normal, and what got you sideways looks at dinner, long before you had any framework for personal style at all. Colin Woodard's American Nations framework proposes that North America is actually 11 distinct cultures, each with founding values that have persisted for centuries. The eleven nations: Yankeedom (New England to the upper Midwest): Founded by radical Calvinists. Deep investment in education, community improvement, and civic duty. New Netherland (New York City metro): Founded by the Dutch as a commercial trading hub. Pluralistic, cosmopolitan, entrepreneurial from the start. The Midlands (Pennsylvania to the central Midwest): Founded by Quakers who welcomed all. Moderate, consensus-driven, deeply suspicious of extremes. Tidewater (coastal Virginia and the Carolinas): Founded by English gentry who recreated a feudal aristocracy. Hierarchical, formal, oriented toward tradition and lineage. Greater Appalachia (the Appalachian backcountry to the Ozarks): Founded by Scots-Irish borderlanders. Fiercely independent, deeply suspicious of outside authority. Deep South (South Carolina to east Texas): Founded by Barbadian planters who built a slave society. Ceremonial, hierarchical, intensely communal within its own ranks. El Norte (the southwest borderlands): The oldest European culture on the continent. Hardworking, independent, shaped by two nations simultaneously. The Left Coast (coastal Alaska to northern California): Founded by New England missionaries and Appalachian prospectors. Idealistic, innovative, convinced it can build something better. The Far West (the interior West to the Great Plains): Shaped by the extraction economy and harsh climate. Pragmatic, self-reliant, resistant to outside control. New France (Quebec and Louisiana): Founded by French colonists who prioritized relationships over hierarchy. Communal, convivial, with a strong sense of place and pleasure. First Nation (northern Canada and Alaska): The nations that predate all the others. Cultures built on deep relationship with land, community, and living tradition. In this episode I'm applying that lens to style, introducing the 11 nations and their regional style archetypes, and asking a question most style advice never thinks to ask: which parts of your style are actually yours? Most color analysts say wearing black depends on your season, but actually your cognitive functions reveal why you're drawn to black and what to pair it with. In this episode, I break down why introverts have a different relationship with black than extraverts, what each introverted function needs black to do, and the polarity principle for pairing black in ways that actually work for your type. If you've ever wondered why wearing black feels essential even when it's not your best color, this framework will make sense of it. Let's connect! Your style DNA is the operating system underneath every outfit decision you make. In this episode, I share three principles that are original to my Style DNA system and that you are unlikely to hear from a stylist, a style quiz, or an AI. These are the mechanics behind why some outfits make you disappear and others make people finally see you. We cover chroma harmony and the Same Plane test, why your favorite color is the only thing in your closet that is truly timeless, and how to translate a boho-at-heart aesthetic into rooms that require you to look polished and intentional. Most people build their style inspiration boards from outfit photos. The problem is you end up chasing someone else's aesthetic instead of your own. The designers at Alice Lane build their interiors from sources that have nothing to do with interiors: a vintage sports car, a textile, a memory of a place. The result is spaces that feel completely original because the inspiration was never borrowed. Your wardrobe works the same way. When you stop looking at clothes for style inspiration and start looking at everything else that moves you, something shifts. You stop second-guessing and start recognizing. The image tells you what you're after. Then you just have to translate it. That's what this episode is about. Let's connect! Discover your essential aesthetic in Signature Style Foundations. Most people think of personality type as a fun way to understand themselves. What they don't realize is that your cognitive functions also predict a lot about which friendships will feel effortless and which ones will require more work. In this episode I share what I've noticed about making friends as an adult through the lens of Myers-Briggs cognitive functions, including what happens when types are just one letter apart, why the perceiving functions shape what you want to talk about, and why none of this shows up on a standard personality test. This is part two of a two-part series. You don't need to listen to part one first, but it's worth going back to. Let's connect! Have you ever found yourself with a closet full of clothes but nothing you actually want to wear? One of my clients, Lauren, recently sent me a voice memo. She's been applying the signature style principles we worked on together, and she noticed something: she keeps pulling clothes out of her closet and not wanting to wear them. Not because of color. Not because of fit. Because of how the fabric feels. Most signature style advice focuses on color and silhouette, but fabric choice determines whether you'll actually wear your clothes. In this episode, I break down three frameworks for understanding fabric: how it relates to your body's natural lines, your energy and movement, and your personal sensory processing. If you have clothes sitting unworn in your closet, this episode will help you understand why. And if you want to work through your fabric preferences and how they work with your body and your energy, join the March 2026 Style DNA Lab. Let's connect! I'm showing you how to build a magnetic brand and a bank account using your creative genius—no more building your brand backwards by chasing viral hooks while losing your soul to the AI noise of 2026. In this episode, I'm giving it to you clean with a bottom-up approach that focuses on your roots so your creative fruits can actually sustain themselves. Buckle in, because we're moving past the surface-level shizz to dive into the six foundational pieces—like personal mythology, brand archetypes, and real-ass magnetism—that turn your brand into a compounding investment and ensure you get paid the most for what comes easiest to you. I break down why the traditional "top-down" approach of focusing on tactics and aesthetics alone leads to a seething sense of incongruence and vanity metrics that don't equate to revenue. I share how to address the root of your brand by moving from performing for the masses to niching down and communicating your true essence. Listen in as I share the six-part framework I use inside Creator Catalyst to help you stop chasing trends and start building a brand that is a compounding investment for your entire life. Here's a glance at what you'll learn from me in this episode: • The Bottom-Up Philosophy: Why addressing the somatic roots of your brand is non-negotiable before you ever touch a posting schedule. • Personal Mythology: How to use storytelling—the most ancient human technology—to build a world where your audience finds belonging. • Philosophy and Principles: Why being polarizing and standing for your anti-values is exactly what creates deep trust and magnetism. • Magnetism and Paradox: How to combine universal archetypes with your personality "plot twists" to become completely unforgettable. • The Genius Trifecta: Identifying your medicine, skills, and mastery so you can get paid the most for what comes easiest to you. • The Triple Threat Content Method: A system of Authority, Artistry, and Audience posts to keep you energized instead of exhausted. Timestamps: • 00:00 – Introduction • 01:17 – Why most people build brands backwards and end up with zero community. • 05:16 – Front stage vs. back stage self: The high cost of brand incongruence. • 07:54 – Element 1: Personal Mythology and the ancient technology of storytelling. • 16:23 – Element 2: Using philosophies and principles to transform from a vendor to a thought leader. • 19:39 – Why standing for your anti-values is required for deep trust. • 21:50 – Element 3: Magnetism—Universal Archetypes meets the multi-dimensional paradox. • 25:19 – The Alex Hormozzi Case Study: Why the "Gym Bro" paradox is magnetic. • 28:14 – Element 4: Identifying your Zone of Genius (Medicine, Skills, and Mastery). • 34:14 – Element 5: Signature Style and the visual identity blueprint. • 36:44 – Element 6: The Triple Threat Content Flow: Authority, Artistry, and Audience. • 40:17 – Building a brand that doesn't require a rebrand every six months. I went to the mall last week. I was surprised to see the clothing stores are basically gone. I guess if I was shopping for my clothes at the mall, I wouldn't have been surprised. In this week's episode, I share how my clothing spending changed last year, in light of the shifting retail landscape. I hear "I don't know where to shop" from people all the time and it makes strategic wardrobe building more necessary than ever. I'm also sharing an important principle from a YouTube decluttering channel I've been watching. When The Minimal Mom explained how she uses "favorites first" alongside categories and containers, I realized it is the exact formula I use in my wardrobe building system, The Wardrobe Pyramid. My sister is ENTJ. I'm ENFJ. One letter different, right? Wrong. Our dominant cognitive functions are completely opposite—and it explains why we've butted heads our entire lives. She makes decisions based on what's effective. I make decisions based on what gets everyone's needs met. Both of us care deeply about people. Both of us are managing things in the outer world. But we're using entirely different criteria. This isn't about gender. It's not about Thinking versus Feeling. It's about understanding the judging polarities—and why 44% of us are an invisible minority in personality and style decisions. Jamie Winship teaches that your identity is your gift to the world—no one else can give the gift you can in the truth of who you are. For years, I diminished myself for a noble reason, making space for someone I loved. But in 2019, watching people crossing the street with their belongings in shopping carts, I was convicted that I could do more. I realized that helping people look like themselves with less effort and resource means they can devote more to solving the problems we face collectively. In this episode, I explore why your personal identity is meant to be expressed, how hiding who you are keeps your contributions from being received, and why the world needs you to show up as who you actually are. If you've been playing small or feel invisible despite having something meaningful to contribute, this episode will help you see your personal identity as the gift it truly is. Jamie Winship teaches that only two things can move the human heart: suffering and beauty. Most people think suffering is meaningless and beauty is superficial. But what if beauty isn't superficial at all? What if it's actually one of the most profound forces for transformation? In this episode, I explore why beauty matters more than we've been taught to believe, how God used beauty to speak identity to me through felt goat ornaments, and why your style journey works best when it invites through beauty rather than obligates through rules. If you've ever felt guilty about caring how you look, this episode will help you see beauty as the profound spiritual force it actually is. Psychologist William Glasser taught that fun isn't frivolous—it's the genetic reward for learning. When self-discovery feels enjoyable, you engage more deeply and retain what you learn. Most approaches to self-discovery require significant emotional labor, discipline, or financial investment. But what if understanding your personality through cognitive functions gave you both profound insights AND practical application you'd actually look forward to? In this episode, I share why the self-discovery path through personality profiling and style exploration is uniquely engaging, how it became my own map for personal growth, and why the homework is something you'll genuinely enjoy. If you've been searching for a way to know yourself better that doesn't feel like grinding through difficult work, this episode is for you. Have you noticed your style preferences shifting over the years? Most people worry when their signature style starts to change, thinking it means they never had one to begin with. But here's what I've learned through both personal experience and working with clients: your signature style should evolve as you grow and mature as a person. In this episode, I'm sharing five legitimate reasons your authentic style naturally shifts throughout your life, from personality development to energy changes to major life transitions. The key is knowing when evolution is authentic versus when you're chasing trends or other people's opinions. Listen to learn when your signature style should change and when it shouldn't. In this episode, Shaun and Rebecca sit down with Melissa Oholendt of Oho Interiors to dig into how she built a high‑end residential design firm rooted in her signature “cottage‑traditional with a European/English influence” aesthetic — and how that clarity has helped her attract the clients she wants. Melissa shares what it took to scale from one person to a team across two states, how she shifted her pricing model, and why strong processes and trust are cornerstones of her business. They also explore the emotional side of design work: how homes affect mental wellness, the tension of leading a team vs. being the face of the brand, and what growth looks like when you lean into your style instead of trying to adapt to external trends. In this episode they discuss:Melissa's journey from finance/PR/photography into interior design and why she finally said yes to doing what she loves. How she made the decision to be in two states (Minnesota and Colorado), the trade‑offs, and how that changed her business structure. Why she moved from flat‑fee pricing to hourly billing, and the importance of having historical data to price confidently. How Melissa builds trust with prospective clients before they even hire her — via Instagram, transparency around cost, and showcasing results. Her team structure, leadership style, and how she's learning to delegate, let go, and empower senior and associate designers. How rising build costs and other recent industry shifts have forced process changes and ways to ensure feasibility earlier (so design work isn't discarded due to budget surprises). What she feels most confident about (processes! systems!) and what's still evolving for Oho Interiors.Melissa's future goals: expanding influence, exploring product partnerships or retail, and building what she calls a modest “empire.”Mentioned:Oho Interiors website — ohointeriors.comOho Interiors on Instagram — @oho_interiorsOho Interiors Pinterest — /oho_interiorsOur links:Subscribe and leave a review - Apple PodcastsLike, Comment, & Follow - Hot Young Designers Club InstagramRebecca's InstagramShaun's InstagramFor more information - Check out the websiteBecome a “Loyal Hottie” - Support us on PatreonDesign Resources - Check out our shop

Many people collect style labels hoping one will finally click. You get typed as a Spring, then a Dramatic Classic, then a Type 4 - and you're still not sure what to wear on Tuesday morning. Here's what's missing: those labels don't teach you how to navigate your own decisions. In this episode, I'm sharing the difference between being given a style category and creating your own style navigation system. It's the same principle that makes personality typing either limiting or life-changing - and it completely transforms how you approach getting dressed. If you've tried multiple style systems and still feel stuck, this episode will show you a different way forward. Download the Guide to Design Psychology. Let's connect! Frank and Squeaks dive headfirst into James Gunn's Superman, the movie that's recharging DC with new energy and old-school heart. They break down everything—from the pacing that mimics a stack of comics, to character performances, visual highs and lows, and why this might be one of the most human versions of Superman we've ever seen. They also debate Guy Gardner's scene-stealing turn, Lex Luthor's layered villainy, the potential setup for Bizarro, and what it all means for the future of the DC Universe. This one's packed, passionate, and full of geeky joy. Our Theatrical Recommendation 51:00 Closing Remarks Key Takeaways: James Gunn's Superman blends nostalgic charm with a modern, fast-paced narrative. David Corenswet's Superman is emotionally grounded and feels deeply human. Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, delivers a fresh take that balances public genius with private obsession. Guy Gardner and Mr. Terrific both exceed expectations, with standout scenes that highlight their personalities. The film's pacing mirrors a comic book run—nonstop but rewarding. The twist about Superman's Kryptonian parents adds emotional weight without breaking canon. Visual storytelling uses lighting—especially sunlight—as a powerful symbolic tool. Bizarro may be hinted at for future films, adding another exciting layer. While some characters like Hawkgirl were underwhelming, others like Krypto left a lasting impact. Quotes: “This is the Superman I pretended to be when I was running around the house as a kid.” – Frank “Lex Luthor isn't trying to rule the world—he's just obsessed with stopping Superman.” – Squeaks “It feels like you picked up a stack of DC comics and read them in one sitting.” – Squeaks “David Corenswet might be the most human Superman we've seen on screen.” – Frank Call to Action: Love what you heard?
