This week, we're revisiting our ever-timely and fascinating conversation around misinformation with London Business School professor Alex Edmans. All Else Equal will be back with a new episode in two weeks.  What is the real problem with misinformation? Are our biases so ingrained in us that we are unable to think critically about the world and the systems around us? What happens when large institutions attempt to push a heterodox narrative? Do we simply need more education to overcome misinformation, or do we need something much deeper—to learn to think critically again? In this episode, hosts and finance professors Jonathan Berk and Jules van Binsbergen welcome Alex Edmans, Professor of Finance at London Business School to discuss his latest book, May Contain Lies: How Stories, Statistics, and Studies Exploit Our Biases – And What We Can Do About It.   Find All Else Equal on the web:  https://lauder.wharton.upenn.edu/allelse/ All Else Equal: Making Better Decisions Podcast is a production of the UPenn Wharton Lauder Institute through University FM. She was told her music wasn’t "good enough" for a debut, and now she’s making history. On this episode of News It or Lose It, Zweli dives into the phenomenal success of RAYE’s sophomore album, This Music May Contain Hope. We’re breaking down why critics are calling this a "masterpiece" and why the single "I Know You're Hurting" is resonating so deeply with listeners. This isn't just a pop album; it's a 17-track, four-part "seasonal" epic featuring everything from gospel choirs to the London Symphony Orchestra and even a collaboration with film score legend Hans Zimmer. We explore the journey from her public fallout with her old label to her current status as Britain’s "independent queen." It’s a story of why you should never bet against someone who knows their worth and why this music truly does contain the hope we all need right now. Spend weekday afternoons with Zweli. In this Notorious Mass Effect segment, Analytic Dreamz examines the track as a deeply personal support anthem following the success of “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND?” in 2025.RAYE wrote the song about someone she cares for deeply, describing it as “medicine” for her own emotions. The ballad addresses hidden pain, emotional masking, chronic exhaustion, and the pressure of hyper-independence. Through vulnerable lyrics like “You don't have to do this all alone” and the urgent outro plea “Don't give up on your life,” the song delivers direct reassurance and mental health awareness.Analytic Dreamz explores the song's live debut at Capital's Jingle Bell Ball and Montreux Jazz Festival, its emotional structure that shifts from observation to active intervention, and how it reflects growing demand for authentic, therapeutic songwriting in modern music. This Notorious Mass Effect segment by Analytic Dreamz highlights why “I Know You're Hurting.” stands out as more than a ballad—it functions as an emotional lifeline, offering empathy, spiritual support, and a clear message that listeners are not alone in their struggles.Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Reading food labels can feel like a full-time job when you or your child has food allergies. Even when you know what to avoid, labels can still be confusing, especially when you run into “may contain” warnings. Marion Groetch, a registered dietitian with decades of experience in food allergy care and education, joins us to unpack all things food labels. Together, we break down U.S. allergen labeling laws, what parts of the package actually matter, and why “may contain” statements are a much grayer area than most people realize. We also share practical tips for navigating so-called “mystery ingredients” like natural flavors and oils, when it is worth contacting a manufacturer, and how to avoid being more restrictive than necessary while still staying safe. What we cover in our episode about food labels: What U.S. labeling laws require: How FALCPA and the FASTER Act protect families by requiring clear disclosure of the Top 9 major allergens. Where allergy information actually lives on a label: Why the ingredients list and “Contains” statement matter most, and why front-of-package claims should be ignored. What “may contain” actually means: Why these statements are voluntary and unregulated, and what that means for real-world decision-making. Foods that fall outside labeling laws: Common situations where allergen labeling is not required, including deli foods, restaurant meals, airline meals, and alcohol. How to avoid over-restricting your diet: Practical guidance on mystery ingredients, higher-risk products, and when contacting a manufacturer actually makes sense. ___ Made in partnership with The Allergy & Asthma Network. These days, it feels like we're bombarded with information from every direction, and figuring out what's true can be overwhelming. Yael sits down with Alex Edmans, author of May Contain Lies, for a fascinating conversation about how misinformation shapes the way we see the world. They talk about why even fact-checking has its limits and how common biases, such as wanting to confirm what we already believe or seeing things in black and white, can cloud our judgment. Using everyday examples, from the Atkins diet to debates about breastfeeding, Alex shows how data can be bent to tell almost any story. Ret FBI Agent Gives An Inside Look At What Bryan Kohberger Tell-All Prison Book May Contain Description: Will Bryan Kohberger eventually publish a prison memoir? And if he does—what horrors will it contain? Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer joins us to speculate on what a tell-all from the confessed Idaho killer might reveal—from his obsession with control to his alleged online alter ego “Papa Rogers,” to what he felt in the moments after the killings. We dig into the ethics, legality, and psychology behind convicted killers writing books, especially in states without Son of Sam laws—where profits could theoretically go to the author. Would Kohberger's writings be an act of confession, manipulation, or pure narcissism? This episode unpacks what a Kohberger prison narrative might look like—and whether victims' families would ever get justice if he tried to profit from his crimes. It's a dark, speculative discussion—but one we need to have, before the publishing world gets ahead of accountability. Alex Edmans shares about his book, May Contain Lies: How Stories, Statistics, and Studies Exploit Our Biases and What We Can Do About It on episode 574 of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast. Quotes from the episode We think a lie is basically the opposite of truth. So something is a lie if you can disprove it factually. -Alex Edmans What I focus on in my book is a more subtle form of a lie where something could be 100% accurate, but the inferences that we draw from them might be misleading. -Alex Edmans It's not that they're bad people, it's that they're people, they're humans. And if we're a person, we have biases. -Alex Edmans What I'm trying to highlight is the importance of being discerning. We want to have healthy skepticism, but we want to have the same healthy skepticism to something that we do like as something that we don't. -Alex Edmans Resources May Contain Lies: How stories, statistics and studies exploit our biases — and what we can do about it, by Alex Edmans Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell Cookie Monster Practices Self-Regulation | Life Kit Parenting | NPR Addiction Rare in Patients Treated with Narcotics Taking A Mosaic Approach to AI in the Writing Classroom, presented by Chris Ostro All Else Equal Podcast A Little Life, by Hanya Yanagihara

In this episode, finance professor and author, Alex Edmans, offers a rigorous examination of the narratives surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in corporate strategy. Drawing on his critique of widely cited studies, including those from McKinsey and BlackRock, Edmans illustrates how flawed data interpretations and confirmation bias contribute to the persistence of questionable claims. He warns against relying on correlation-based research that lacks causal rigor, especially when such findings are used to justify high-stakes decisions in boardrooms and policy circles.   Edmans identifies three recurring issues in the current DEI discourse: cherry-picked performance metrics that ignore long-term shareholder value; reverse causality, where strong performance leads to more diversity, not the other way around; and omitted variable bias, such as industry effects that confound diversity claims. He also critiques the narrow definition of diversity, which often reduces individuals to surface-level demographic traits while ignoring cognitive and experiential variation that may be more relevant to performance.   The conversation extends beyond DEI to explore the structural incentives within academia, consulting, and media that reward oversimplified narratives. Edmans notes that when ideas become dominant, dissenters face not only reputational risk but also institutional hurdles that discourage honest debate. The result is a professional ecosystem in which flawed research is amplified and poorly contextualized advice is recycled across geographies and sectors without regard for applicability.   Other key themes include: The difference between demographic and cognitive diversity in strategic decision-making The dangers of universalizing business practices without accounting for local context Why flawed performance metrics (e.g., EBITDA) misrepresent firm success How misaligned incentives distort executive behavior and perpetuate ineffective initiatives The role of institutional culture in suppressing dissent and reinforcing groupthink   For senior leaders navigating complex decisions, Edmans' commentary offers a timely reminder: even widely accepted practices warrant scrutiny. In environments where performance is difficult to measure and cause-effect relationships are opaque, intellectual discipline, not ideological alignment, is essential.   Learn more about Alex Edmans here: https://alexedmans.com/   Get Alex's book here: May Contain Lies: How Stories, Statistics, and Studies Exploit Our Biases—And What We Can Do about It.  https://maycontainlies.com/   Here are some free gifts for you:   Overall Approach Used in Well-Managed Strategy Studies free download: www.firmsconsulting.com/OverallApproach   McKinsey & BCG winning resume free download: www.firmsconsulting.com/resumepdf   Enjoying this episode? A frustrating Sunday afternoon in Children's Mercy Park saw Sporting Kansas City fall to the Portland Timbers 4-2 in a match that was plagued by all too familiar defensive mistakes and lapses in concentration.  Interim head coach Kerry Zavagnin tried to warn us in his press availability earlier in the week that this team would still lose games at times and while there was certainly continued progress in chance creation offensively, some familiar problems defending restarts came back to bite them and put them in an increasingly difficult, and ultimately insurmountable hole to climb out of.On a positive note, it was perhaps the best game we've seen yet from Shapi Suleymanov, scoring a goal, also earning two yellow cards and a PK, and generally giving Portland's left side all kinds of problems.  And yet he was removed from the game after 55 minutes in an attempt to bring fresh bodies to attempt to press Portland even further that was unfortunately fairly ineffective.  This was one of several choices Kerry Zavagnin made in this game that were certainly different than we are used to seeing from his predecessor, and certainly showed a willingness to try things and recognize that a 4-2 loss and a 7-2 loss count the same in the standings.  That said, it also reminded us that not all change is necessarily good, and it did seem to limit the effectiveness of the attack for a significant period of the 2nd half.  We'll dive into game #2 of the Kerry Experience this week and discuss what changes we see, and what we liked and didn't like about the decisions he made. Finally, Mike Illig sat down with Sam McDowell of the KC Star and offered some illuminating perspective on where he'd like to see this team go in the future, the Great Kevin de Bruyne Bake Off has begun as 4 MLS teams are now vying for his services, and a trialist appears at Sporting KC practice this week.Music by The Spin Wires

Welcome to the podcast that's now called Investology. This new name reflects the changes that I felet were needed for 2025 onwards. A new year that feels like a new era in the investment world based on the news this January probably not the era we want, but we can learn to adapt and thrive. Many investment podcasts, that talk about macro, micro or predictions. This is not one of them. Here we think about investment management and what goes on behind the curtain of financial markets. With my guests, we will talk about tech and innovation but also the history, the narratives, the principles. And there's no better guest to start this year with than Alex Edmans, a professor of finance author and expert in how we use and misuse data and evidence. We discuss his excellent book May contain lies in the previous episode. Alex is also a sustainability specialist and author of grow the pie How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose and Profit and also wrote a recent paper called The End of ESG and they will be the subject of this conversation that helped me think about sustainable investind and I hope it helps you too. I wish you a great year in your personal, professional and your invetsing life! ABSTRACT from The End of ESG by Alex Edmans ESG is both extremely important and nothing special. It's extremely important because it's critical to long-term value, and so any academic or practitioner should take it seriously, not just those with “ESG” in their research interests or job title. Thus, ESG doesn't need a specialized term, as that implies it's niche – considering long-term factors isn't ESG investing; it's investing. It's nothing special since it's no better or worse than other intangible assets that create long-term financial and social returns, such as management quality, corporate culture, and innovative capability. Companies shouldn't be praised more for improving their ESG performance than these other intangibles; investor engagement on ESG factors shouldn't be put on a pedestal compared to engagement on other value drivers. We want great companies, not just companies that are great at ESG. ABOUT ALEX EDMANS Alex's website: https://alexedmans.com/ Alex Edmans is Professor of Finance at London Business School. Hey Food Allergy Mama, I know many of you might be struggling with cross-contact and not only avoid foods that contain your allergen, BUT also foods that say “may contain traces of allergen”.  Also, some of you might be considering some sort of food allergy treatment like Xolair, OIT, or TIP, and one of the benefits of these treatments is that you don't have to worry about small traces of your allergen.Yes, navigating cross-contact can feel like playing food roulette with our kids' safety. But what if you didn't have to live in fear of traces of allergen and every ‘may contain' label? What would that REALLY LOOK LIKE in everyday life?I thought you might want to know what it's like not to have to worry about cross-contact and may contain allergen labeling because that may help you decide if treatment is right for your family. We started doing OIT about 7 years ago.  About a year and a half ago, we got to the point where we didn't have to worry about “may contain traces of peanuts and tree nuts” anymore. Our whole world flipped upside down, in a good way!Even so, some fears have been hard to overcome, and surprisingly, some things changed less than I thought they would. So if you're wondering what it looks like to be “in-between” where you can have traces of allergen, but no more than that, this episode is for you!So grab your favorite drink, settle in, and let's get to it. There's an ancient story of multiple blind men touching an elephant on different parts of its body. And each man emphatically states what the elephant is based on the body part. The guy touching the leg says the elephant is a tree trunk. The guy touching the ear says it's a huge pancake. The guy at the tail says it's a rope, and so on… Like the elephant parable demonstrates, finding reliable, truthful information can be—to put it mildly—a huge challenge. Oftentimes, we'll hear a story from one source and another source will contradict it. It can feel overwhelming to figure out what's what. A person who may be able to help us is Dr. Alex Edmans (https://alexedmans.com/), Professor of Finance at London Business School and author of a book I loved called May Contain Lies: How Stories, Statistics, and Studies Exploit Our Biases―And What We Can Do about It. The book received praise from scientific journals, the media, and thought leaders like Dr. Kim Milkman, a well-known professor at Wharton, who said it was “required reading.”Alex shares how we can think like scientists. He has strategies to help us find our way through the mire of contradicting data, find our way out of our own biases and cognitive distortions, and find our way into more accurate information.  So, listen in as Alex helps us figure out what we can do to see that elephant more accurately.
