It's the end of the year, which means it's time for us to put out a new episode and feel guilty for not releasing more this year! (We were busy, but we got lots more planned for next year!) Our guests this month are George Lockett (Senior Writer at Failbetter Games and a Narrative Consultant, Writer, and Designer at Bear Wolf Narrative. Previously the Narrative Lead on The Last Clockwinder, the Scriptwriter and Interactive Designer for BBC Earth - Micro Kingdoms: Senses, and a Contributing Writer to Where the Water Tastes Like Wine) and Mary Goodden (Senior Narrative Designer at Maze Theory currently working on Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom. Previously a Writer and Editor on Zombies, Run!, a Writer and Narrative Designer at Failbetter Games on Sunless Skies and Fallen London, a Writer on Inkle's Pendragon, and co-created Funicular Simulator 2021), and they join us to discuss how their marketing backgrounds have helped with their writing, how to make a writer's room work, advice for thinking in terms of design, what's helped maintain their writing output, what they've learned from the other writers they've worked with, giving feedback, tips for writing themselves out of problems, the best ways we can diversify the voices in the industry, how they approach working with other departments to get their needs taken care of, what their favorite narrative tools are, favorite thesauruses, what their ghosts are, and more, more, MORE!Our Guests on the InternetGeorge's Twitter, Website, and you should wishlist/check out Mask of the Rose when it comes out next yearMary's Twitter, Website, and you should wishlist/check out Peaky Blinders: The King's Ransom when it comes out next yearStuff We Talked AboutZombies, Run!TwineInkjamWriting for Games by Hannah NicklinThe “Reverse of the Spielberg Gaze”: Jordan Peele, Rian Johnson, Tony Kushner and More Talk Shop on THR's Writers RoundtableMiroMicorosft OneNoteObsidian (the notes app)Webster's 1913 Power ThesaurusWordHippoOur theme music was done by Isabella Ness, and our logo was done by Lily Nishita.
I must admit, there was an element of selfishness involved in this podcast. I'm currently doing a creative writing course in my spare time (rather than in my news stories, ho ho) and one of the things I'm struggling with, weird as it is to admit, is the idea that I can write anything. I don't have to be bound by the rules of this world, or any world, or any rules. I can conceive of something totally and utterly new. And that's... I still can't quite wrap my head around it. But my guest on the podcast today, Cassandra Khaw, has long made their peace with this, producing works of - usually - pitch black horror that I'm not sure I'd have the nerve to imagine. The most famous of their pieces is probably the novella Nothing But Blackened Teeth, which was a USA Today bestseller when it came out roughly a year ago. So I wanted to find out from Cassandra, who seems to imagine new stories at the speed other people think of things to eat for dinner, where their ideas came from and how to shape them from there. I also wanted to find out where their life-long love of horror came from - and I was treated to a wonderful real-life Malaysian horror story when I asked. Cassandra isn't only a horror writer, though. They've written for Eurogamer and now they help write games. They've contributed to games like Fallen London and Sunless Skies and Falcon Age, and more recently were working at Ubisoft Montreal on Hyperspace (and some undisclosed projects) and, to get us right up to date, Gotham Knights. Cassandra's already gone on to two new game projects they're not able to talk about yet. They sound busy, right? Well, let's not forget their debut collection Breakable Things, coming out on 8th November. We talk about it in this podcast and it sounds great; it revolves around a theme of people pushing back against the world, like a werewolf out for revenge, or mermaids - who were pulled out of the ocean by humans, and impregnated - doing the same. There are some quieter explorations of grief too, including one tale that's personal and close to Cassandra's heart. They have two other books coming out next year, too. One is a twisted mermaid novella called The Salt Grows Heavy, due May 2023, and the other is a collaboration with Richard Kadrey called The Dead Take the A Train, due March. "Pathologic workaholic" is how they'd describe themselves, and on this evidence, I'd have to agree! Incidentally, the scary Malaysian film Cassandra mentions at the beginning is Impetigore, and the book recommendation is The Least of My Scars, by Stephen Graham Jones. Oh and apologies for a bit of keyboard clacking at the beginning of the recording - we relocate quickly to a quieter area. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this week's episode of The Game Informer Show podcast, we go around the video game world and back again. The show starts with Matt Miller and Leo Vader as we discuss our time spent in Apple Arcade. From new gems to old favorites, we put perspective on the service now that we have been using it a few months. Alex Stadnik is this week's super producer. Next, Joe Juba, Brian Shea, Ben Reeves, and Alex Stadnik all join me to discuss the results of our competition to predict who will take home the win at The Game Awards that happened last week. Let's just say there is a lot to discuss. And victory here might make you the smartest person in the world. In the next segment, Ben Reeves, Joe Juba, and Dan Tack join me for community emails where we do the unthinkable: We rate the Mona Lisa. Then we have the sixth and final installment of our Game of the Year chats, where I ask guests what games are defining their year. I am joined by Ben Reeves, Matt Miller, and Dan Tack as we try to get in some last-minute discussions. Check the list below for all the games we covered over the last few weeks. Find those podcasts on your favorite service! And finally, Joe Juba interviews Michel Koch, Jean-Luc Cano, and Raoul Barbet from Dontnod Entertainment. They are some of the minds behind Life is Strange 2, which recently saw its successful conclusion. Joe has a spoiler-filled chat with the team about the process of making the game, so fans who have already finished Life is Strange 2 should definitely tune in. Thanks for listening! In this (sure to upset everyone everywhere) installment of BLGP, we talk some serious details about the recent ouster of FOSS pioneer (inventor of GNUutils) Richard Stallman from MIT.
Im Cast erwähnte Spiele: West Of Loathing, Like Roots In The Soil, Aragami, The Sexy Brutale, The Binding Of Isaac, Bury Me My Love, SOMA, Penumbra, The Division, Child Of Light, Sunless Skies

In this episode, veteran games journalists Wilks and Wildgoose are once again joined by game developer Dean Longmore to chat about Praey for the Gods, Sunless Skies, Wargroove, Vampyr, Plunkbag and Ape Leg, find out what Wildgoose thinks is the "nicest" game he's ever played, and finally get time to actually discuss the 7/10 game they've been meaning to discuss for almost a month. Will our heroes be able to keep a constant train of thought without too many divergences? Will Wilks get angry about a Nintendo Direct reveal? Will they finally use the script for their sign off or just wing it as usual? Tune in to find out...

After a week's absence due to various illnesses OLL returned to a studio missing one team member, who was away in Sweden. But which one was it? The mystery gets solved fairly early in the episode, this is why we're a videogame radio show and not a true crime podcast. As Dry January has been replaced by Drenched February we had a Super-Special Guest - James Chew from Failbetter Games. Their new game Sunless Skies came out two weeks ago so we thought we'd ask him what it's like developing a game world with an existing fanbase, what it's like moving from being a fan of the series to helping design it, and how does James' degree help in his videogame career. We clarified the Marioke franchise situation, went CD free (only one edit done in post, but more were arguably needed), tried to work out if Ste was an octopus, and spoke about the iphone a lot. We’ve got a two parter on our hands this week—a two parter with a whole lot of time travel. First, Austin, Cado, Natalie, and Patrick sit down to talk Apex Legends, the latest from Titanfall creators Respawn Entertainment. Almost the whole team has been dropping into the Outlands, and it seems like we can't get enough. Then, after the break, Rob taps in for Patrick to talk Sunless Skies, the sequel to Failbetter Games's Sunless Sea. This game's got space trains, zombies, and demons, and it all takes place in...hell?? Next, Cado and Austin give their first thoughts on The Division 2 beta, a game that has in their marketing tiptoed around the politics they use as environmental decor.Discussed: Apex Legends, Sunless Skies, The Division 2 Beta See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It’s the start of MisanthroPlay Season 5(!!) and we attended the Sunless Skies launch event at Failbetter Games’ South London office. We talk a little bit about that experience, and a whole lot about the first 10 hours of Sunless Skies, an unconventional and fiercely literary RPG that understands the potential of steampunk without stumbling down the usual pro-imperialist pratfalls. Also, We Talk about the latest Final Fantasy XIV announcements, Subnautica, Resident Evil 2, and Ace Combat 7.Shortly after recording this podcast, it was announced that Spatsz of the French cold wave duo KaS Product had passed away. The intermission music in this week’s episode is KaS Product’s “Loony Bin” in tribute.

This week, Chris O'Regan chats to Haley Uyrus of Failbetter Games about how Sunless Skies was developed and how it compliments their other two titles. Failbetter Games have created three games that are based in the same alternate reality universe where the laws of physics we enjoy in our own do not apply. These three games are Fallen London, Sunless Seas and Sunless Skies. The last title is the subject of this episode of The Sausage Factory and show host and producer Chris O'Regan chats to Haley Uyrus about how Sunless Skies was developed and how it compliments the other two titles. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode209.mp3 The Sausage Factory 209 was edited by Chris O'Regan
This week we return to the One Piece campaign in a new way. Hayden is off for the week, so Call of Cthulu will return later, but this week we play Skyfarer. The One Piece characters have been adapted to this new game by Grant Howitt and Chris Taylor based on the world of Sunless Skies by Failbetter games. Also a bit of our test game has been added to the end of the podcast. Due to technical difficulties that whole game will not be posted, but it has been added to get a taste of the game played in it's "Regular" setting.
Summer is here and so is a new episode! Today we're talking with Marc (author, game writer, designer, and previously worked at Valve on Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 Episodes 1 & 2, and Dota) and Chris (narrative director at Failbetter Games, previously a staff writer and head writer, and has written on Fallen London, The Last Court, Sunless Skies, and Sunless Seas) about storytelling transmedia synergy in 1990s Japan, what makes a good narrative director, planning a career as a writer, core skills writers should have, getting into writing with a team too early in your career, keys to good worldbuilding, creating the illusion of depth, the poop caves of Nottingham, having end goals in mind as a team, trusting your teammates, avoiding your first thoughts in writing, how expectations of more dialogue can put the wrong weight on characters, big failures, changes in writing processes, and player literacy. Should 30 year old men be allowed to say “sick” and “dope”? By the end of this podcast the lads will have convinced you that no, no they absolutely should not. But light DIY tasks and watching Hey Duggee? Oh yes, that's very much more in our wheelhouse. There's a fair bit of LEGO in this episode too. Not only is there a contender for the worst LEGO sets ever created - Final Duel II - but there's also our very divided opinions on The LEGO Batman Movie. Then it's off to the concert hall we go, discussing Dear Esther Live, Vivaldi, Beethoven, and whether you need to listen to a 30 hour lecture series - like the one by Dr. Robert Greenberg that Peter listened to - before entering the auditorium. And it's off into Victoriana-themed space with Sunless Skies, the excellent follow up to Sunless Seas, that is currently in Early Access on Steam. It's not sold as well as the last game for some reason, which is baffling, considering you get to fly about among the stars in a steam-punk train rocket! All that and more, with Sam (@MrSamTurner), Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), and Peter (@XeroXeroXero). A very big thank you to everyone who has left us a review on their podcast platform of choice so far. We love getting your feedback, so keep it coming! This episode is supported by the nice people at CastBox, which is a very good app for listening to podcasts to. They've previously championed this little thing we do each fortnight, so a big thank you to them for spreading the word about the show. And from this episode onwards we're going to start using Amazon affiliate links in these descriptions, when it makes sense. So if you click through one of our links, and if that link happens to go to Amazon, AND if you end up buying something, then you'll get it for the regular price and we'll get a small commission. Rather than taking the money we make on ads, putting it in a vault, and diving into it like Scrooge McDuck, instead we funnel this cash back into advertising the podcast to help us get more people like you to give us a try, or buying better equipment for when we record. So it's win win, hopefully. For links to topics covered - http://stayingin.podbean.comFind us on Twitter - @StayingInPodFind us on Facebook - @StayingInPodcast
GrinCast - a podcast about videogaming and games from GameGrin
We certainly talked a lot about battle royale this week. This week on the GrinCast, we talked about the Spectrum Vega+ in trouble, Sunless Skies also in trouble, and a bit about Fear the Wolves. We also chatted about PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' infographic, and Far Cry 5's season pass - and even found time to squeeze in a bit about the Overwatch League. Remember, if you want to chat to us, just leave a comment on the GameGrin site, or chat to use on Twitter at @GrinCast. If you fancy us on the go, you can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes (for iPhones) and Stitcher (for everyone else).
A bunch of news and content! I'm just going to list it. Kiss's Gene Simmons talking about his $2000 box set, Super Deluxe roasting Taylor Swift via Limp Bizkit, Machines of Man, Machine Head, Linkin Park's tribute show to Chester (and our picks for vocalist), Sutrah, the Sacred Son artwork controversy, and the new Winds of Plague single. Also how ridiculous this Friday's releases have been. Then we do a deep segment on producer Jens Bogren, including his work on Ihsahn, Leprous, Vildhjarta, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Devin Townsend, VOLA and more. Finally, cool people time. The cool horror/sci-fi game Echo, Kingsman: The Gold Circle, mother!, Hannu Rajaniemi's The Causal Angel, Sunless Skies and more. Enjoy!
It’s the fourteenth season of One Life Left! Miracles can happen if you believe in them! For instance, Ste has a tan and could potentially be djing at Ann’s wedding for up to 22.5 minutes! Oh, and the caretaker could forget to press play and record, thereby missing important chat from the beginning of the episode so had to make a seamless edit (sort of)! Miracles! Some people could argue that one such miracle would be Failbetter Games getting all of their Kickstarter money for Sunless Skies within one day, but we’re not too surprised by that as their games are rather excellent. And it was EXCLUSIVELY announced on One Life Left so it’s successful monetisation was assured. This week’s Super-Special Guest was Cash Decuir from - no! But yes! - Failbetter Games so we got to talk to him about how you write for a game like Sunless Skies, what lessons were learnt from their previous Kickstarters and which flying insects are a force for good. We had a debrief about our Marioke Live event, with the conclusion that it was excellent and that YOU should be there next time. Plus we raised enough money for Resonance that they’ll have no choice but to keep us on air. Sega Badawi gave us the latest Local News, Ann reviewed Wedding games and we also had a bit of goat butter chat. Standard videogame radio show stuff really. Cheerio! Out of The Box, Blasphemous, The Banner Saga 3, Sunless Skies...
