This is the seventh episode of The Podgoblin's Hat, with Nina and Dave. You can find it on it's own feed wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome back to a new season of the Podgoblin's Hat! This week, Nina is reading the Exploits of Moominpappa and Dave is reading the Memoirs of Moominpappa. Our theme for these books is Memoir. This episode is all about unreliable narrators, self mythologising and the fundamental mystery of our parents. Moominpappa has finally finished his memoirs and is reading them out to the children. Did he really build a Moomin house, or did he just draw it? How much of this story is true? We have a question for Snufkin from upcoming guest Martin Zaltz Austwick, who you can find here. Our Spirits of the Moomins are both memoirs: Fun Home by Alison Bechdel and When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr. Dave's spirit of the Podgoblin's Hat is Down to a Sunless Sea.

Down To A Sunless Sea A Tiller Galloway Adventure Written by David Poyer Narrated by Edison McDaniels “A powerfully written Florida adventure . . . a compelling glimpse at the mysterious world of cave diving.” – The Orlando Sentinel “One of his best novels yet . . . bristles with suspense . . . What makes this novel particularly memorable are the extensive, harrowing descriptions of cave dives, which are riveting enough to terrify experienced divers.” –Publishers Weekly “Fans of Clive Cussler will love this thriller. An essential purchase.” – Library Journal. “White-knuckle diving scenes, constant action.” – Kirkus Reviews “Tiller is a character who grows on the reader . . . As usual, Poyer provides a smashing climax, this one fraught with danger from man and nature.” – Jacksonville Times-Union "There can be no better writer of modern sea adventure around today." – Clive Cussler “Claustrophobics beware! David Poyer's suspenseful cave-diving novel, DOWN TO A SUNLESS SEA, takes readers into water crevices, submerged limestone tunnels, cramped wormholes and subterranean hell holes that give suffocation new meaning . . . Vivid, believable descriptions . . .We can get the fear and adrenaline of cave-diving without ever leaving the dry safety of our favorite comfy chairs.” – Tallahassee Sun Democrat Welcome to the most dangerous sport on earth: where cave divers step into murky Florida ponds and end up hundreds of feet below the ground, threading through the narrow passages of Swiss-cheese-like rock formations, heading down tunnels that may open into caverns of breathtaking beauty, or else suddenly collapse in rockfalls that crush out their air and their lives. Open-water diver and ex-con Tiller Galloway has come to this watery underworld to find out why an old friend died young – and take one last shot at being a father, a lover, and a friend. But with a woman opening up her heart, and a deadly conspiracy closing in around him, Galloway must navigate between lies told aboveground and truths hidden in the depths . . . where a violent battle is about to explode. Combining the knife-edged action of Clive Cussler with the heart stopping storytelling skill of John D. MacDonald, USA Today-bestselling Dave Poyer continues to be one of American's most popular and remarkable thriller writers . . . and a master of underwater suspense. “A ripping good read! Poyer raises the bar with this one. The cave-diving scenes are riveting, claustrophobic, terrifying, and beautiful.” – Booklist Available right now on Audible. https://www.audible.com/pd/Down-to-a-Sunless-Sea-Audiobook/B09V96SKF4?qid=1658209408&sr=1-9&ref=a_search_c3_lProduct_1_9&pf_rd_p=83218cca-c308-412f-bfcf-90198b687a2f&pf_rd_r=E6J71JV1Y8MMPM3PWAD5 To hear more from Edison, listen to all episodes of THE SURGICAL FICTION PODCAST, right now right here! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-surgical-fiction-podcast/id1547756675 #podcast #audio #audiobook #Audible #fiction #nonfiction ★★★★★

Content note: our chapter book touches on bullying, mortality and euthanasia. In discussing it, we also talk about dementia, and how Terry Pratchett dealt with it in his books for children.   This is an episode all about magical, virtual, invisible hats as worn by a pair of powerful girls. And for the first time, we have a guest host! Many thanks to Dave Pickering for stepping into Matt's wonderful shoes.   Our chapter book is A Hat Full of Sky, by Terry Pratchett. It is the second of the Tiffany books, and it's the one where she leaves home and starts to learn witching. We talk about coming of age stories, mean girls, self-respect and how bad thoughts don't make you a bad person.   Our picture book is Satoshi Kitamura's Millie's Marvellous Hat! It's a charming story about imagination and self-expression, and our discussion of it contains a large portion of bickering about what makes a hat a hat. Brim or brimless? Ribbon or no ribbon? Dave brings their experience as an early years library outreach worker as well as their past as a hat-wearer to bear, and shares some ideas about how you could bring this story to life for a group of under-5s. See all of Laura Ellen Anderson's new covers for the Tiffany sequence here: http://www.pickledink.com/blog/terry-pratchett-covers-laura-ellen-anderson   You can watch Pratchett's documentary about living with Alzheimer's here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmejLjxFmCQ&ab_channel=TheDocumentaryChannel112   And watch Satoshi Kitamura tell a kamishibai version of his book Hat Tricks here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtPm7B9_Ri0&ab_channel=BookTrust   Dave and their work can be found here: http://davepickeringstoryteller.co.uk/ We especially recommend their podcast Down to a Sunless Sea here: http://downtoasunlesspod.com/ And if you want to argue with them about hats, you can catch them on twitter @goosefat101   If you enjoyed this Pratt-chat, we also talked about The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents in our episode about Fairytale Retellings: https://eventhetrunchbull.podbean.com/e/episode-14-fairytale-retellings-pattans-pumpkin-and-the-amazing-maurice-and-his-educated-rodents/ And you can hear Dave's first appearance on the show in our episode about dementia: https://eventhetrunchbull.podbean.com/e/episode-12-dementia-moominvalley-in-november-and-the-remember-balloons/   What A Wonderful Day is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License by Shane Ivers of silvermansound.com

Even when she was writing Harry Potter fanfiction as a child, something I'm sure she won't thank me for sharing, she was doing something she still does now: questioning the world and challenging the parts of it she doesn't like. It's a mindset which would catapult her to fame when collaborating on Inkle's celebrated game 80 Days, as she unpicked the novel Jules Verne famously wrote, and challenged the backwards, colonial attitudes in it.   Since then, she's gone from strength to strength, working on renowned gaming projects like Sunless Sea, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Boyfriend Dungeon and, more recently - in fact very recently - open-world adventure Sable.   She is - drumroll - Meghna Jayanth, and this, in roughly an hour, is her life.

USA Today -bestselling author David Poyer writes gripping undersea thrillers in the tradition of Clive Cussler and John D. MacDonald. This time on THE SURGICAL FICTION PODCAST, an excerpt from David Poyer's novel BAHAMAS BLUE, with the continuing undersea exploits of Tiller Galloway and his sidekick Shad Aydlett. Narrated by Edison McDaniels. Salvage diver and ex-con Tiller Galloway vowed he'd never work for "The Baptist" again. Until the menacing kingpin makes him an offer he can't refuse, sending him deep into the beautiful blue Caribbean to raise fifty tons of sunken cargo-- a dive to the razor's edge of death. Caught in the cross fire of a crazed underboss, hostile islanders, and a corrupt Bahamian government, Tiller and his Hatteras Island sidekick Shad Aydlett take on a nightmare of double crosses, as a scenario more sinister than he ever imagined begins to unfold. From the author of Down to a Sunless Sea comes this shattering sequel to Hatteras Blue, a tale as explosive as those of Hammond Innes and Peter Benchley, and packed with some of the most breathless and vivid undersea scenes ever written. Bahamas Blue was originally published by St. Martin's in 1991, as the second book in the Tiller Galloway series. This edition incorporates many minor cleanups and improvements. I'm happy you can enjoy it once more! I hope you'll like it, and will go on to read the other Galloway novels: Hatteras Blue, Louisiana Blue, and Down to a Sunless Sea. Audiobook available soon on Audible. Narrated by Edison McDaniels. //////////////////// THE SURGICAL FICTION PODCAST is narrated by Edison McDaniels. (CN: Discussion of dementia and memory loss) This week we're reading books linked by themes of dementia and memory. Our chapter book is Moominvalley in November, by Tove Jansson, the last in the Moomins series, which sees various characters returning to Moominvalley, trying to remember and forget in turn, in the absence of the Moomin family Our picture book is The Remember Balloons by Jessie Oliveros, illustrated by Dana Wulfekotte, which draws a beautifully simple metaphor for dementia. We have our first special guest this week – Dave Pickering is an aficionado on all things Moomins. He also explores dementia in his podcast Down to a Sunless Sea, in which he documents a series of conversations with his father living with dementia. You can find Down to a Sunless Sea here - directory.libsyn.com/shows/view/id/downtoasunlesssea Dave has also created many other podcasts and projects – find out more at http://davepickeringstoryteller.co.uk/ He also contributed to this book for children about masculinity: https://www.waterstones.com/book/what-is-masculinity-why-does-it-matter-and-other-big-questions/jeffrey-boakye/darren-chetty/9781526308146 You can find Dave on Twitter @goosefat101 What A Wonderful Day is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License by Shane Ivers of silvermansound.com

Our picture book this week is Sumi's First Day of School Ever by Soyung Pak and illustrated by Joung Un Kim. We talk about how scary it can be to start a new school, especially in a new country, and how drawing can be a bridge between people even in the absence of a common language. General content note for the series: death, dementia, old age, mental health issues Additional content note: sex, assisted dying, war  This episode is the last episode of the first (and possibly last) season of this show, and it's about legacy. I’ve been planning this show for years. The earliest recording I’ve used was recorded by my dad on cassette tape in 1984. This show has covered 96 years of my dad’s life and 38 years of mine. I started recording interviews with my dad in 2011 and began writing essays about our relationship and his journey through old age towards death in 2017. I’m glad I made this show. That it hasn’t just remained an imagined show. It’s been a tough journey at times, but it’s one I’m so glad I’ve made. Thanks for travelling on it with me. If I might communicate that to other people regardless. If the world as humans know it lasts for long enough for me to reach a similar age as my dad, I wonder if I will be someone who frustrates and delights young people with my faith in them, whether I will still accept the possibility of hope and change? Later this year I will be launching a Getting Better Acquainted mini series titled ‘Down to a Sunless Sea: Memories of my Dad' about the my relationship with my dad, my dad's life story and his descent into dementia. The show will be be mixing clips from over 15 hours of interviews that I've done with my dad over the last 10 years with narrations based on these medium pieces: https://medium.com/@goosefat101 Additionally to the main thread of the show I've received The Pulse Award from the Wellcome Trust and British Podcast Awards to make some episodes that look at the science behind the issues covered which include dementia, heart conditions, mental health and euthanasia. https://fund.britishpodcastawards.com/news/50k-awarded-to-uk-podcasters/ As part of the requirements for this funding I'd really appreciate it if people who have listened to Getting Better Acquainted at some point since it launched in 2011 could fill in this survey: http://podcastviews.com It shouldn't take too long to fill in and you can select an option to be entered into a draw to get a pair of tickets to this year's awards ceremony.
