John Grisham's name is a common sight on book store shelves and the annual lists of best-selling works. His gripping thrillers, including A Time for Mercy and The Runaway Jury, are known across the world. In 2006, Grisham published The Innocent Man, a nonfiction work chronicling the story of Ron Williamson, who wrongly convicted, sentenced to death row and eventually exonerated. Grisham's latest book is his second of nonfiction. Framed: Astonishing True Stories of Wrongful Convictions chronicles the cases of ten people who have been wrongly convicted and the strenuous efforts taken in the attempt to secure their freedom. The book is coauthored by Jim McCloskey, a longtime advocate for the wrongly-convicted and founder of Centurion Ministries. Grisham serves on the board of Centurion.Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.
From State championship to the State Penitentiary, This is the story of Ron Williamson.
The artist's mind will never fail to fascinate me. If you create and release music, you're setting in motion an unknown chain of events. People can guess and assume, but at the end of the day, "the fans are always smarter than you," to paraphrase John Mayer (a quote I bring up way too much). That does not mean that the artist is not smart, it means that the artist never knows exactly how the world will interpret what they let it consume. Ron Solemn, for example, released his song, "Body Bags" in 2018 and it continues to receive 10's of thousands of plays as it climbs closer to 1 million on Spotify alone. As Ron mentioned in the interview, "Body Bags" was one of a series of songs released in 2018, and he did not expect it to gain the traction that it did - something I find so interesting as I come across more examples of the market knowing what's good more often than the artist. Ron Williamson is a rapper, singer, and songwriter releasing hiphop and RnB music with a focus on mental health. He's done this under the name Ron Solemn for the past 5 years. In this podcast we cover: Ron's transition from singing to rapping and songwriting, and how friends influenced him to rap. Gaining confidence on stage by singing covers. Songwriting, going by feel and creating a full song from an idea. Marketing music, and remarketing released songs. His song, "Bodybags" and how it went viral and gained almost 1M plays. Using music to say what's on his mind. And more... This week, we’re diving into the new Netflix Original, The Innocent Man. This six part docu-series follows the life of Ron Williamson, who sat on Oklahoma's death row for 11 years for a crime he didn't commit. It’s based on John Grisham’s best-selling true crime book of the same name. Here to talk about it are the series director Clay Tweel and true crime authors, podcasters and real-life married couple Rebecca Lavoie and Kevin Flynn. They host the popular true crime podcast, Crime Writers On.
The small town of Ada Oklahoma was rocked in the early 80s by two unrelated murders of young women in the town. But by the mid 90s, that would change. The town would come under scrutiny for miscarriages of justice, where two and possibly more men were convicted of crimes they did not commit. Last month, Netflix released The Innocent Man, a 6 part series looking at these crimes and their aftermaths. This week on the podcast, we take an in-depth look into just one of those cases, that of the murder of Debbie Sue Carter and the wrongful convictions of Ron Williamson and Dennis Fritz. Ron and Dennis had very different journeys through their appeals processes, but both of their fates lay in the testing of DNA evidence. Would new science finally exonerate them?
