The Outlaw Trail ended here! No need to commit a crime to "do time" at the Territorial Prison. Built first as a Federal Prison (1872-1890), it later became Wyoming's State Penitentiary (1890-1903). During the 30 years it was in operation, 1,200 prisoners, including the notorious Butch Cassidy, walked through the front iron doors and occupied the cells. Now a museum, visitors walk the halls where prisoners were locked up, worked and lived. Every month at the Washington State Penitentiary, a group of incarcerated journalists meets up to pick a theme for their news magazine. The paper is called Top of the Mountain. It details the goings on in the prison as well as recipes for the food you can buy at the commissary, advice from long time residents, and interviews with the formerly incarcerated. Top of The Mountain started after three people committed suicide in the unit. The goal was to be a way to form connection. It has grown into a labor of love. We spoke with the founder of Top of The Mountain and a reporter there about the paper and what it means to the prison community Guests: Jennifer Jaylee, founder of Top of the Mountain Jeffrey McKee, writer for Top of the Mountain Relevant Links: Prison Journalism Project: My Job at a Washington State Prison Newsmagazine See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The high school baseball player hung a homemade motivational sign on the wall of his bedroom. It read Brandon Puffer will be a Major League Baseball player. Indeed, Puffer made it to what ballplayers call “The Show.” Only to fall from the Bullpen to the State Penitentiary in Texas. Brandon Puffer was a pitcher on the Boston Red Sox baseball team when they broke a century-old curse and won the World Series in 2004. Puffer has written a book titled, From The Bullpen To The State Pen, in which he opens up about his experience. In this episode of True Crime Reporter®, Puffer shares the story of his setbacks and come back. Puffer coaches youth and high school baseball players on how to play college and pro ball at GPSLegends, located in Central Texas near Round Rock and Georgetown. In closing, here's my reporter's recap and reflections. Welcome to Londonderry, New Hampshire, where "Business Is Good, Life Is Better." Established in 1722, the town is located in Rockingham County in southern New Hampshire. The town was named after Londonderry in northern Ireland after a successful petition by local Scots Irish immigrants. Three years before the town was established, the first potato grown in the US was harvested in Londonderry. Linen making was an early industry in Londonderry. Londonderry linen was considered to be the finest linen produced in New England and is reported to have been worn by both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. By the early 1800's apple's became a major crop in the area and are now sold worldwide. The town has been called home by a number of notable people including Ocean Born Mary and James Wilson. Dr. Jess introduces us to these interesting characters in this week's Town Tidbits. We hope you enjoy our trip to Londonderry!

HIDDEN DEMONS: Evil Visits A Small New England Town A father, his daughter, and a brave young girl thwarted criminals whose escalating hidden demons led them to bolder and more risky acts of violence in Margery Metzger's Debut True Crime. On January 7, 1994, residents of Berkshire Hills woke up to a typical snowy winter day in the majestic woods of Western Massachusetts. The quaint New England towns, the idyllic scenery and the people who lived there could have stepped out of a Norman Rockwell painting. That day, a trial began for college student, Wayne Lo, who celebrated his 18th birthday by purchasing an assault rifle and opening fire on campus—killing two and wounding four others. Elsewhere, two young girls were accosted in the changing room at the local pool. Another young girl narrowly escaped being abducted at gunpoint on her way to school. Her quick thinking later resulted in profound repercussions regarding another case—that of a young boy who vanished from a strip mall. All these events appeared unrelated, and it seemed to police agencies and local residents that the world had suddenly gone mad. After all, they told each other, “These things don't happen here!” In chilling, dramatic narrative HIDDEN DEMONS: Evil Visits a Small New England Town, Margery B. Metzger details these events and reveals a savage serial killer, Lewis Lent, Jr., who lurked in the shadows. It was the bravery of a father and daughter, and the remarkable work of law enforcement officers, that would turn the table.

The Idaho State Historical Society is looking for pictures of Boise's old State Penitentiary as part of a new project. Jacey Brain, Visitor Services Coordinator at the Idaho State Historical Society and Interim Historic Sites Administrator, Anthony Parry joins Idaho Matters to tell us more.
Louisiana's State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola, is one of the largest maximum security adult prisons in the country. There are 4,400 prisoners at Angola currently serving life without parole in a state with the highest incarceration rate in the U.S. It is also notorious for its brutal treatment of prisoners. Last month, The Takeaway discussed Louisiana's Governor Jon Bell Edwards proposal to move teens from a juvenile detention center to a facility on the grounds of the former slave labor camp. Advocates and families filed a federal lawsuit to block this move saying it would be dangerous for the teens and young adults, and a federal judge placed a temporary hold on the plan. Now, a federal judge has lifted the stay, and the state can now move ahead with a plan to relocate about two dozen incarcerated young people from the Bridge City Center for Youth to a facility on Angola's grounds. The facility is a building previously designed to hold adult death row inmates. The ruling allows for the transfer of children as young as 12. At a press conference in July, Governor Edwards said they would not have any direct contact with adult inmates at Angola, and would be housed in a separate facility, but parents and advocates remained worry what sending children as young as 12 to a maximum-security prison would only further the isolation and trauma wrapped up in childhood incarceration. We spoke with Gina Womack, Executive Director of Families and Friends of Louisiana's Incarcerated Children, and we also spoke with a mother of an incarcerated youth at Bridge City Center for Youth in Bridge City, Louisiana. Check out our previous segments covering Angola: Louisiana's Juvenile Detention Crisis.

Hey Queerdos, it's lovely to see you! Quick note: after today's episode, Creepy InQueeries will be taking a 2-week hiatus. But when we return, we're so ecstatic to announce that our BFF Edie will be joining us as a permanent 3rd host! Woohoo!!! OK, now on to today's business: For Episode 26, Kevin takes us to the wilds of 1911 Wyoming to talk about... sports? More specifically, the Wyoming State Penitentiary All Stars baseball team. When a money hungry warden gambles on his own team of convicts, the stakes get raised - WIN OR DIE! Does the team have what it takes to survive the season? Literally. Let's plaaaaaay ball! Then Miss takes us on a journey through the Xochimilco Canals, just south of Mexico City, to the (probably) scariest place on earth, La Isla de las Muñecas - The Island of the Dolls. For over 50 years Don Julian Santana Barrera collected broken and abandoned dolls and littered his one acre island with them. But why? Join us this week to find out! Five southern Zak-Bagans-esque brothers play dominoes with a ghost. Yep. You read that correctly. These are the special guests in this week's episode. Zoey tells us about the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary that started in a horrible way, continued to have a horrible history, and then was shut down. It was investigated by the crew of the TV show, Ghost Asylum; the aforementioned southern men. This episode is also an honorary mention for the oh-so-special Haunted Boozy Places series. While it is known for being a prison, it is currently home to a distillery, which is home to drinks like "End of the Line Bloody Mary". But mostly, we talk about the terrible, lawless conditions that happened within the prison walls that led to over 100,000 deaths in just over 100 years. But before we get to that point, Robin walks us through some of the most haunted places in the south, and we're proud to say we've covered some of them. The Ohio State Pen was the site of the worst prison fire in the US. April 1930 saw 800 men crammed into 204 cells, trapped as an inferno raged, over 300 of them would perish. But this horrific incedent was not the first, nor the last, tragedy at this institution. Join us as we delve into riots, gangsters, and human experimentation. This week we take you to the land of potatoes. Lauren covers one of the first female serial killers, Lyda Southard, who we believe lured in men with her good looks, but other sources say she resembled a potato, so who knows. Then Nora takes us to the Old Idaho, not Ohio, State Penitentiary, and the haunted and dark history behind the now abandoned prison. Located in Boise, ID, the Old Idaho State Penitentiary was a functional prison from 1872 to 1973. It started out as an almost stereotypical wild-west-looking jail, originally known as the Territorial Prison because Idaho was not made a state until July of 1890. Construction began on the first building in 1870 as a single cell jailhouse. Over the years the complex grew, one building at a time, all of them surrounded by a 17 foot tall sandstone wall. Most of the buildings within the walls of the penitentiary were built almost exclusively by the inmates living within. The buildings were constructed with rocks from the quarries nearby which is part of the reason why so many of the original buildings are still standing today. During the course of its history as a prison the Old Idaho State Penitentiary housed over 13,000 prisoners. Of these prisoners 215 of them were female, 10 were executed and more than 500 escaped, although only 90 of the 500 were able to remain at large for any substantial portion of time. It's been a crazy few years for Blake Bushong and his team. After steadily growing their home haunt over years, the team was ready to open in a commercial location for the first time 2020. That didn't work out as planned, but now their haunt is open and ready to scare. DeadWater State Penitentiary (https://hallowseveinc.com/tickets) is now open weekends through Halloween at Launch Pointe in Lake Elsinore, CA. Coming up, owner Blake Bushong on what to expect this year. Support from this episode comes from Gantom (https://www.gantom.com/demo). I mean what do you expect when you exploit people and try to get free labor out of them?? Also, maybe don't build an amusement park on a native burial sight and it wont be haunted as shit... Just saying.
The Somethings In Your Backyard are back in Boise this week! Cass dives deeper into the history of The Old Idaho State Penitentiary and the spirits that remain within its walls. Special Guest: Kristy SumnerIn 2014, Dr. Kristy Sumner coupled her passion for travel, history and the paranormal when she formed Soul Sisters Paranormal, an all-female team, made up of Sumner, her two sisters and two friends. The investigators of Soul Sisters Paranormal travel to some of the most historic and, reportedly, haunted locations in the U.S. in an attempt to determine for themselves if spirit activity does exist and to highlight the rich history of each location. Individually, each member of the team is an accomplished professional in her respective field, and each holds a Masters, PhD or JD degree. To date, the team has traveled to and investigated numerous US locations, including: the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (WV), The Lizzie Borden House (MA), the Villisca Ax Murder House (IA), the St. Augustine Lighthouse (FL), Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary (TN) and many others. Prior to forming Soul Sister Paranormal, Dr. Sumner, who holds a PhD in Public Affairs with an emphasis on Criminal Justice, was a senior director for a Registered Traveler company focused on biometric clearances for the traveling public, she was a senior consultant for a biometric credentialing company, and she was college professor at Metro State College of Denver and the University of Central Florida. Show Notes: 00:00 Kristy opens the episode with a part of their video when they investigated the grounds of Fort Mifflin. 00:58 Intro to Roaming the Earth and bio of Kristy Sumner, the paranormal investigator who travels the country investigating haunted locations. 3:28 Kristy talks about the excerpt she read and Fort Mifflin. She explains the importance of the fort during the revolutionary war. 6:50 Drea expresses her fear of the paranormal and Kristy tells us about the team's lack of being afraid despite the startling noises, voices and other paranormal experiences that they witness. Kristy explains that they approach every investigation from a scientific approach where they attempt to debunk the claims before deeming it paranormal or unexplainable. 8:28 Drea asks about the Fort MIfflin experience where a shadow figure broke the laser grid on camera. Kristy and her team saw it happen in front of them and successfully capture this remarkable unexplainable experience in front of the camera. Kristy shares the very active experience of staying overnight at Fort Mifflin and the interesting approaches they have in order to speak to these entities. 12:29 Drea asks Kristy the reason why and how “Soul Sisters” started traveling the country for these paranormal investigations. It all started with the idea of going on a girls getaway that turned into a visit to the Moundsville State Penitentiary in West Virginia. 14:40 Drea asks Kristy about the kind of gear they bring on these investigations. 17:40 Kristy shares her favorite haunted location - The old Gilchrist County Jail in Trenton, Florida. She explains the small footprint of the prison built in 1928. She found this location to be very active and she shares some of her stories. They talk even further about the shadow figure that walked across the hallway twice, broke a laser grid that was set up and when asked to cross again, it did. 21:28 Kristy shares more of the things she has seen - Balls Moving, the laser grids moving, k2 meters that measure energy go off. She explains another paranormal experience at Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, the former maximum security prison where they once held James Earl Ray, the man who shot Dr. Martin Luther King. 24:00 Drea explains her own experiences with the hauntings happenings in her home after her mom's recent death. 25:02 Kristy tells us her theories of why she believes an entity stays on earth and becomes a poltergeist.
