It's time to have PASSION in your work-life. In this episode, Kimmy Powell shares how you can discover your true calling. Kimmy also provides a simple process from her book "The Passion and Purpose Project" that will help you reflect on interests, skills, and childhood dreams. She'll guide you in ruling out wrong fits and taking inspired action. Tune in to hear Kimmy's tips for awakening your inner passion.  Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:  Awakening the inner child to find your true passion and calling How to get started with finding your calling How God guides us from whispers to knocks Find your path through self-awareness How to start with the end in mind [06:19] Awakening the Inner Child to Find Your True Passion and Calling Think back to what stuff excited you most as a kid before other people shaped your thinking. Remembering what you loved to do then can give you clues to your natural abilities and gifts. Reconnecting with that youthful part of yourself helps bring clarity around your real passions and purpose in life. [16:30] Finding Your Path Through Self-Awareness A lot of times people have an idea in their head of what they wanna do that's not realistic. And so, you've got to figure out what you really want versus what's actually possible. Cross off options that won't work to get clear on what's truly best for you. It's good to know what you don't want too, because that helps you put all the pieces together to see exactly what job would be the perfect fit. [19:44] God's Guidance: From Whispers to Knocks God first gently whispers ideas and insights to you. Then if you don't listen to the whispers, God will start shouting louder messages through more obvious signs or experiences. And if you still don't listen, God may ultimately deliver an experience that "knocks you over the head" – and leaves no doubt about the direction or lesson He is trying to impart. [27:37] How to Start with the End in Mind Think about how you wanna be remembered after you're gone - what difference or things you want people to say about you. Having a clear picture of your future self can help with choices now. Beginning by thinking big picture about goals and dreams keeps you focused on truly achieving your full potential. Notable quotes: [11:38] The child always knows roughly what they want to be – who they are at their core. [11:43] [14:42] If you can just find your lane, you don't really need to know where it ends. You just need to know that you're on the right highway. [14:50] [19:44] God whispers, then God shouts, and then God knocks you over the head. [19:47] [27:12] Design a life that is centered around you and not so much around what you think you should be – but what you actually are. Lily is diagnosed with BDD and is invited to a pool party which she dearly wants to go to but is held back by this invisible rope of fear: how others will analyze and criticize her body.  She goes through stages of sadness, frustration, embarrassment, and obsession due to the obstacles she faces throughout the story.  As she goes through these moments, it is important to analyze and break down what is happening and what is going through her head, as her internal monologue screams at her and floods her with negative thoughts.  Highlight Quotes:  Lily desires to be perfect and look like the ideal image she has in mind because “BDD is all about being obsessed with the whole idea of looking perfect even when there is no such thing as perfect”.  She goes through and expresses different behavior changes such as covering herself since “a patient with BDD would go to extreme lengths to make them feel comfortable and not bring attention to their appearance.”  Throughout the whole story she has negative comments filling her head. “It's quite simple. If you don't like the way you look or think there is something wrong, you won't have the confidence you wish to have.” Wishing she could change herself she does an online search looking for different ways to lose weight scrolling for hours and hours browsing through weight loss treatments and surgeries to diets to pre-made workouts that focus on losing fat.  For more research here are some resources I found helpful in my studying:  https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=k9jQCwAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PR9&dq=body+dysmorphic+disorder+feelings&ots=CITdRdWEA2&sig=2qEGLx3pNAgy4TMTEm5zUxx2Fu4#v=onepage&q=body%20dysmorphic%20disorder%20feelings&f=false https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7114025/ https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1357034X09347222  https://link.springer.com/article/10.1023/A:1022090200057 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0005796700001029 https://bmcresnotes.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1756-0500-6-36 https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/body-dysmorphia/#:~:text=BDD%20can%20seriously%20affect%20your,and%20even%20thoughts%20of%20suicide.

Does nature have a purpose? The simple scientific answer is no, but the fuller story is, of course, more complicated than that. Concepts like goal directedness, directionality, and even purpose are used - usefully! - in biology all the time. How can we reconcile these two realities? Today's guest on the HPS podcast is Professor Alan C. Love. Alan is professor of philosophy at the University of Minnesota and principal investigator of 'The Purpose Project'. Alan joins Samara Greenwood to talk about how we can develop richer understandings of purpose in the sciences, and potentially, more broadly.Alan also raises some interesting points on the challenges and opportunities of interdisciplinarity. He discusses what scientists need to be aware of when working collaboratively, and how philosophers of science can add great value.A transcript of the episode can be found here - https://www.hpsunimelb.org/post/episode-3-transcriptMore about Alan Love and his work:Project Website: ‘Biological Purpose' - https://www.biologicalpurpose.org/General Article: ‘Alan Love on the Science of Purpose' - https://bit.ly/AlanLoveArticleAcademic Article: ‘Organising Interdisciplinary Research on Purpose' -https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biac041  Thanks for listening to The HPS Podcast with your current hosts, Samara Greenwood and Carmelina Contarino. You can find more about us on our blog, website, bluesky, twitter, instagram and facebook feeds. Mentoring teens is a scary thought, isn't it?  They carry attitudes, think they know more than you and rarely show gratitude.  Why would anyone want to invest in them when there are easier ways to contribute to society? And yet, they are our future.  They want to be successful, they just don't know how.  Between media addictions, fast access to drugs, mental health breakdowns, campus lockdowns, threats of mass shootings, the absence of available mentors and so much more, the odds are against them. In the second of our two part, bonus episode series, we interview a group of 7th and 8th grade students who recently completed the Purpose Project at their school.  We ask them about their thoughts on a range of topics and have them share the personal insight they gained while working through our innovative, social-emotional style curriculum.   Again, we think you will love what they have to say and also be inspired yourself to invest in the young people in your life who are starving for mentorship.  If you feel the tug to do something but you are not sure what, consider scheduling a 15 minute call with us to explore becoming a certified Purpose Project Guide.  It may be easier than you think and more rewarding than you can possibly imagine. Carolyn Tate is a writer, educator and speaker and the author of six books including Brave Women Write and her best-selling book The Purpose Project. She is a pioneer of purpose in Australia and her book has inspired countless individuals to pursue their purpose and make an impact. Brave Women Write is her most recent book. It's a powerful call-to-action for women to harness the power of their words, to get writing and create personal and planetary change. As a river swimmer with a deep connection to nature, Carolyn's purpose is to write and share the stories that move us to remake the world. Carolyn and I were speaking about this topic of women who were bravely showing up to share their ideas of how to make things better, through writing and publishing books. Our discussion sparked this idea of using the podcast to inspire more women to write. There is no doubt we are experiencing a movement where many women are bravely showing up as protagonists of change in their industries. While this isn't limited to women, my experience and that of most of my co-conspirators, is that more women are driving purpose-led change than men. Perhaps it comes from the need to rebalance growth and winning with nurturing and sharing.  So today's episode is dedicated to the many women who are showing up bravely, as well as those who want to do more to show up bravely. Brave Women Write is a celebration as well as an invitation. Raise your hand if you ever had a mentor that changed your life. And I mean really got into the weeds with you and helped you realize your worth. If you are one of the lucky people to say yes to that with your hand up, then you are in a much smaller group than you might realize. Now watch that group get smaller. Raise your other hand if you have taken the time to mentor a teen in need. If you are like most people, you will probably only have one or no hands up at all.  It is a tough pill to swallow, grasping that we live in such an interconnected world where mentorship is a fun buzzword that is, more often than not, foreign to us.  Tragically, we are in a time where the next generation needs us to awkwardly have both of our hands up, high-fiving ourselves reading this. In recent years, any parent or family member knows of or has heard of a tragedy, mental illness, or stressor that teens today have gone through. With the recent pandemic, shutdown, the explosion of comparison culture on social media, and much more, teens are now going through more than ever.  With that, it makes three core questions more difficult to decipher and answer, leading to three of the most significant issues teens face today. 3 Core Hurts and Needs of Teens They do not have a connection to their identity → Who am I? They do not have a connection to their purpose → Why am I here? They do not have a connection to their sense of belonging → Where do I fit in? So many programs around the country have fought to help teens answer these questions without getting too lost or hurt in the process. Unfortunately, all of the largest teen mentoring organizations combined still only impact 1% of teens in America.  But we can do better. They need us to do better. Building a mentor model that is scalable and sustainable is something the next generation is yearning for, as you probably did too. With that, after decades of varied experience in the non-profit, corporate, and church world, our team has built a model that we believe can disrupt the teen mentoring industry. And while we don't think we have the silver bullet, we do believe that we are offering a different version of mentoring that is more efficient and effective.  Court systems, educators in classrooms, college sports teams, local businesses, and so many more have all experienced and been impacted by the Purpose Project.  Currently, we are on track to reach 10,000 students in the next three years. That will make us the biggest mentoring program in the state of Texas. And all of that happens inside of a mentoring model that only takes 1 hour a week, for 6 weeks. How, you might ask?  It's also the only thing standing in the way of the next generation of teens finding purpose and belonging. You! Your choice of whether or not to get involved. With our limited, part-time staff of 7 people, we have had the honor and privilege of partnering with hundreds of mentors already, and we know that with you, that's only the beginning. So check out today's episode and find out how you can help alter a teen's life in just 6 hours. After, if you're curious and want to find out more? Go through the Purpose Project yourself or sign up to become a certified guide and mentor at www.PurposePro.Org.  We cannot wait to see how the life of a teen is going to change by your impact. And neither can they!

Imagine the city you live in right now running out of water. And I mean just plain out of it. At first, it's a comical yet worrisome thought, right? What would you drink? How would you shower? What would you swim in? The list goes on. Now let's say you could do something to work against that or even prevent it. Where would you start? Or How? Or even would you? This simple question sparked a sense of service and care in this week's guest, former police officer and veteran, David McDonald.  David spent decades of his life serving how he knew best, whether in Desert Storm, deep in the communities of Austin, and now, he's set his sights on something even closer to home.  With his response to that water question being, "Yes, now how do I get involved?" He decided to try to join his city's council to make a difference. And he did just that by knocking on hundreds of doors campaigning for a position without pay, going on to win his runoff, and getting himself elected to since the time of this filming.  He did all that while serving in marriage ministry alongside his wife and mentoring local youth as a certified Purpose Pro mentor and guide.  David is a prime example of a value highlighted here by one of our co-hosts in this episode: You can do so much more with the 5 miles around your house than the 500 miles. Where your arms can reach is who you can most easily touch and impact.  David got off his couch in retirement and chose to do more than he was asked by impacting teens, marriages, and his city in the process. All because someone asked him, what if we don't have water?  Which led to: What if you can change that? What if you can impact this marriage? Or this teen? How could that change the trajectory of their life? Maybe all of that starts with clicking play on this episode, and then taking that inspiration even further by investing in the life of a teen just down the road from you. Dannelle speaks with occupational therapist, Emilia Bourland. In this episode, Emilia shares how we can reframe our approach to using mobility aides as tools of support and independence and how care partners should communicate needs and concerns for our own health and safety. Dannelle and Emilia discuss the importance of acknowledging our loved one's fear of loss of independence and why support systems are essential to gaining the most effective tools and information as a caregiver. “The way might not look like we think it should look or like it used to look, but when we open up our mind to the possibilities, when we stay open-minded as to how something can happen, it's limitless.” - Emilia Bourland Timestamps03:31 Emilia's three core values and how they connect to occupational therapy and caregiving 07:43 Educating people on caregiving by explaining the “how” and the “why” 10:07 How occupational therapists help with safety 13:21 An example of how an adaptation can help with transfers 18:46 Affordable places to buy durable medical equipment 21:24 How home health assessments can help improve accessibility 24:26 Paying for home health assessments with an occupational therapist 28:02 How to help loved ones adjust to integrating mobility aides 32:28 Examples of simple, inexpensive home modifications that will make life easier 37:02 Amelia's passions outside of caregiving Takeaway Learnings1. Balancing safety with support for our care partner's independence can be so challenging. Using mobility devices, adaptive equipment, and home modifications can help create a care environment that reduces risk of injury for both care partners, while also empowering more self-reliance in those we care for. 2. When we have the right information, we're empowered to make better decisions. The disconnect between educational resources and the people who need them most is frustrating, but most importantly know that they exist, and may require a little digging to find what works. It may also be helpful to enlist a professional, or provide additional information like the Home Modification Information Network, which has been developed with support from the Administration for Community Living. On their site, you can find educational materials, programs, policies, funding, and more resources by state. 3. If the person we care for is in medical crisis or rehabilitation, that's an optimal time to talk with an occupational therapist or other appropriate care specialist to do a home safety assessment. Actionable Tips1. Emilia talks about the difference our approach can make to help reframe how loved ones can understandably feel about using mobility aides. The default feeling is often that using a device like a walker or lift aid represents a taking away or loss of independence. When we're having these conversations, taking time to first think about how we present choices and their benefits can be helpful – like, “I want to support you in doing what you can for yourself for as long as possible”. So, we're addressing the fear and grief around loss of independence along with a potential help. 2. For those of us who provide educational support, training, or instruction, as care professionals, it's important we're clear about our role – which is not about trying to fix a single specific problem or situation, but rather asking ourselves, “What information can I share to help care partners make more informed decisions now and in future?” This is empowerment. 3. We need to take our physical strain and limitations seriously. Ask yourself, your support group, or consult with a professional about what kind of device aids, tools, or other assistance can help ease the strain of transfers or other daily caregiving activities. About Emilia BourlandEmilia Bourland, OTR, ECHM is the president and founder of Higher Standards Caregiver Training, as well as co-founder of The Purpose Project. She has been an occupational therapist for over 10 years, working in adult settings ranging from home health to the ICU, and everywhere in between. Emilia has worked as adjunct faculty at Texas Woman's University, teaching masters level occupational therapy students both hands on clinical skills and advanced professional reasoning. She has taught safe handling and care skills to nurses, caregivers, and clients/patients since the start of her career as an occupational therapist, providing direct training to thousands of people, in addition to logging tens of thousands of hours in her own clinical practice. Emilia holds her master's degree in occupational therapy from Texas Woman's University and her Executive Certificate in Home Modification from the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California. The unorthodox methodology behind the Catalyst Purpose Project has help people young and old understand their unique design and position themselves for breakthrough. It's time to start diving into the path that will allow you to finally live with the freedom and fulfillment you have been longing for as well as help you unlock the potential in those around you. Show Notes Overview of who we are The problem we are solving (most of us are disconnected from our unique design and purpose) Stats that point to the problem; https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidsturt/2018/03/08/10-shocking-workplace-stats-you-need-to-know/?sh=51312e39f3af Our solution We need a guide that can quickly navigate us down a better path.  We need clarity and confidence around our unique design and purpose.  And we need a proven method that will empower us to take action and maximize our impact.   All of this is packaged together into an experience we call the Purpose Project.  When we delay the discovery of our purpose: we overlook our core strengths that give us a competitive advantage we spend time on tasks that don't align to our unique design we misinterpret what truly motivates ourselves or our team we unintentionally follow the same routines and patterns that limit our success we tend to let pivotal development opportunities like this never become a priority 5 Keys to Getting Unstuck Personally and Professionally 1. Become a student of history 2. Pursue an understanding of your unique design 3. Get clear on what you are pursuing 4. Take strategic steps with the support of others 5. Embrace your fears and take risks anyway Confidence is born out of experience, you only need to get it right once. The repetition of these 5 steps will result in living a life without regret. Often when we over commit we get so wrapped up in our frustration that we don't take stock of what "overwhelm" really feels like.  When we just get present without judgment of ourselves or the situation and just acknowledge what we're feeling by saying "This is what overwhelmed feels like" we can more easily recognize the feeling in the future and avoid committing ourselves beyond our capacity.  This is a great lesson for both adults and kids to tap into.At the end of the podcast I mention two upcoming free summits:The Evolving Humanity Summit - how to manage stress. The Purpose Project Summit - how to find and live your purpose. My interview about brain green zones will air on the Evolving Humanity Summit on Friday May 15 and my good friend Crystal's interview on the Purpose Project will air Friday also!
