Seven years after the botched police raid that left Anjanette Young handcuffed and traumatized in her home, she is now being selected to join the oversight board for Chicago's police department. But the road from victim to police reform advocate has been long – and is one traced in her new memoir Past the Pain. In it, Young recounts the night her life was changed, the faith that she both questioned and drew strength from, and the support she's found along the way. In the Loop checks in with the social worker-turned-police reform advocate about her new memoir, and what she hopes changes in CPD. Eight decades ago, Andrew Cassel's father was bundled aboard a prison ship in England and sent to Canada as an “enemy alien”, where he was held behind barbed wire for two years. The elder Cassel was part of a little-known operation that in 1940 targeted about 2,300 Jewish Europeans whom the British feared were spies for Adolf Hitler. Now, Cassel—along with other descendants and some historians—are raising awareness about what he calls “Canada's dirty little secret”. They want an apology from Canada and educational programming. The prisoners lived in harsh conditions at nine prisoner-of-war camps in Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick. In some cases, they were locked up together with groups of real Nazi soldiers and German U-boat crews who'd been captured by the Allies during the Second World War. But they weren't spies—they were doctors, professors, Yeshiva students and bankers who fled to England to escape the Holocaust. The British government soon realized their mistake, but Canada took until 1943 to release all the prisoners. Some experts blame widespread antisemitism in the Canadian government for the undue delay. Many of those former internees later became prominent community leaders in Canada, including the late Rabbi Erwin Schild, who died in 2024 at age 103; Justice Fred Kaufman, the first Jewish judge on Quebec's Appeal court; Alfred Bader, a chemist and philanthropist to Queen's University; businessman Eric Exton; printer Leo Klag; philosopher Rabbi Emil Fackenheim; and two Nobel Prize winners. On today's episode of The CJN's flagship North Star podcast, host Ellin Bessner is joined by Andrew Cassel; Jewish historians Paula Draper, and Jennifer Cousineau of Parks Canada, who collaborated to release a new podcast spotlighting the story of one of the POW camps south of Montreal; and Blatant Injustice author Ian Darragh, who is spearheading the apology petition. Related stories Learn more about the new Parks Canada podcast spotlighting European Jews deported from Britain to Canada in 1940 as enemy aliens and held in POW camps in Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick. Wrongfully imprisoned as a teen, activist and author Gary Tyler turned decades behind bars into a story of resilience, art and redemption.
Gary Tyler, a Black teenager from St Charles Parish, was falsely accused and wrongfully convicted in 1976 of murdering a white student during a racially charged incident on a school bus, despite no physical evidence and testimony later recanted. He was sentenced to death at age 17, making him one of the youngest people on death row in the U.S. at the time. After nearly 41 years in prison, Tyler was released in 2016 when his conviction was reduced and he accepted a plea deal, widely recognized as a grave miscarriage of justice. Now he is an accomplished fiber artist and the author of 'STITCHING FREEDOM: A True Story of Injustice, Defiance, and Hope in Angola Prison." Gary Tyler joins Ian Hoch to share his experience.

Kathleen Folbigg was convicted over the deaths of her four babies in 2003 in a case that shocked Australia. The first three were treated as cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) but when Laura died, the authorities looked to Meadow's Law and arrested the grieving mother. That controversial theory held that “one sudden infant death is a tragedy, two is suspicious and three is murder until proved otherwise”.She always maintained her innocence. In 2023 a judicial review found that the babies may have died of a genetic condition and having served nearly two decades in prison she was freed. Her case is now regarded as one of Australia's greatest miscarriages of justice. In August, the now 58-year-old woman, who was once branded “Australia's worst mother”, was awarded just AUS$2million for 20 years of wrongful imprisonment. The sum was far less than anyone predicted says award-winning investigative journalist Quentin McDermott. He wrote the book on Meadow's Law and made the TV documentary that helped raise questions about the safety of her conviction, leading to the review that freed her.In the first of two episode on the case, McDermot explains how the now discredited legal concept led police to Kathleen Folbigg's door.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by Suzanne Brennan. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

When police officers intentionally falsify evidence to arrest someone they believe is guilty, it's usually "an ends-justify-the-means approach," says Doug Lieb. He and trial partners David Lebowitz and Alyssa Isidoridy challenge that approach in their civil rights practice, recently winning $7.6 million for a client who spent 30 years wrongfully imprisoned. With hosts Ben Gideon and Rahul Ravipudi, the guests reveal their collaborative case vetting process, the power of federal fee-shifting statutes, and why they choose federal court for civil rights litigation despite its challenges.Learn More and Connect☑️ David Lebowitz | LinkedIn☑️ Doug Lieb | LinkedIn☑️ Alyssa Isidoridy | LinkedIn☑️ Kaufman Lieb Lebowitz & Frick on LinkedIn | Facebook | X ☑️ Ben Gideon | LinkedIn | Facebook | Instagram☑️ Rahul Ravipudi | LinkedIn | Instagram☑️ Panish Shea Ravipudi LLP on LinkedIn | Facebook | YouTube | Instagram☑️ Gideon Asen on LinkedIn | Facebook | YouTube |

Michael Calvey (Odyssey Moscow: One American's Journey from Russia Optimist to Prisoner of the State) is an investor, businessman, and author. Michael joins the Armchair Expert to discuss how the Soviet Union existed when he climbed the the matterhorn but had fallen by the time he came down, learning that contact lenses freeze inside one's eyes in Russian temperatures, and being an early tech investor in the Russian during its big recession. Michael and Dax talk about his apartment being deliberately set on fire by rivals, being raided and arrested by armed men in the middle of the night, and feeling betrayed by believing so much in a country that wrongly imprisoned him. Michael explains discovering he had a malignant tumor in his leg while behind bars, what the average Russian citizen thinks of Putin, and why writing this book was both cathartic and cheaper than therapy.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. So it turns out that Donald Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and the Department of Justice lawyers were lying all along when they claimed it's impossible to return to the United States someone they wrongfully deported, because that person was in a sovereign nation and the US had no power or authority to facilitate the person's return. For the first time, the Trump administration HAS facilitated the return of a Guatemalan migrant that they had wrongfully deported to Mexico. A federal judge in Massachusetts ordered the Trump administration to "take all immediate steps" to return the man. The administration complied with that order and now the man is once again back in the US. The obvious question for Donald Trump is: was that REALLY so hard?If you're interested in supporting our all-volunteer efforts, you can become a Team Justice patron at: / glennkirschner If you'd like to support Glenn and buy Team Justice and Justice Matters merchandise visit:https://shop.spreadshirt.com/glennkir...Check out Glenn's website at https://glennkirschner.com/Follow Glenn on:Threads: https://www.threads.net/glennkirschner2Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glennkirschner2Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glennkirsch...Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/glennkirschn...TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/glennkirschner2See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

If we are being warned not to travel to Venezuela....then why are we sending prisoners there? More U.S. nationals wrongfully detained in Venezuela than anywhere else. Trump's pardon attorney reviews cases of convicted MAGA militiamen. Geeky Science: Global temperatures could break heat records in the next five years. Data also shows small but ‘shocking' likelihood of year 2C hotter than preindustrial era before 2030. A review of Uber receipts showed the company has been routinely adding the $1.50 charge on Downtown rides outside of the surcharge's time window. In response to a Block Club inquiry, an Uber spokesperson said the company had “mistakenly charged” the congestion fee on rides after 10 p.m. since early January, when the city expanded the Downtown congestion surcharge to weekends and reduced its cost by 25 centsHost - Jon HansenReporter - Mack Liederman Want to donate to our non-profit newsroom? CLICK HEREWho we areBlock Club Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization dedicated to delivering reliable, relevant and nonpartisan coverage of Chicago's diverse neighborhoods. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.
In an Oval Office meeting Monday with El Salvador's president, President Trump said Kilmar Abrego Garcia would not come back to the U.S., despite a Supreme Court decision ordering the Trump administration to "facilitate" his return. Today's podcast begins with our awesome host, Mike Slater, reviewing the big meeting between El Salvador's president, Nayib Bukele, and Donald Trump in our nation's capital. You'll certainly want to hear what Slater has to say about these two men and if our two countries can work together on key issues like crime!Following the opener, Breitbart reporter Neil Munro uses his incredible Irish accent to report on the lamestream media's bogus "deported Maryland father" story and explain what's REALLY going on in this tangled immigration case!
A federal judge told Justice Department lawyers to cancel vacation as she launched rapid discovery in the case of a wrongfully deported man. Judge Paula Xinis scolded the Trump administration for doing “nothing” to facilitate Kilmar Abrego Garcia's release from El Salvador’s custody and return him to the United States. White House correspondent Laura Barrón-López discussed more with Mary McCord. PBS News is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders
The federal government is now rehiring 25,000 public servants that Trump/Musk/DOGE unlawfully fired.Think about this: after being wrongfully terminated, those federal workers sat at home for a month or more performing no work for the American people. But because Musk and Trump fired them unlawfully, they will very likely receive back pay for the time they were at home. This represents Musk and DOGE squandering our taxpayer dollars rather than saving the government money. What is the best way to truly make government more efficient? NBC News reported that a "Senior FBI Official Forcefully Resisted Trump Administration Firings." This is an important development in the effort to combat lawlessness and the abuse of power of a Trump administration intent on extracting revenge against FBI agents who protected the American people and American democracy by working on January 6 cases. Glenn reviews the new reporting and the implications of FBI leadership willing to resist presidential lawlessness. If you're interested in supporting our all-volunteer efforts, you can become a Team Justice patron at: / glennkirschner If you'd like to support us and buy Team Justice and Justice Matters merchandise visit:https://shop.spreadshirt.com/glennkir...Check out Glenn's website at https://glennkirschner.com/Follow Glenn on:Threads: https://www.threads.net/glennkirschner2X aka Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/glennkirschner2Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glennkirschner2Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glennkirsch...Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/glennkirschn...TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/glennkirschner2See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Uncle Si is impressed by the presumptive future 57th president of the United States, John-David's 10-year-old son, Carter. Carter spills the beans about Abraham Lincoln's ghost, his overzealous math teacher, and what his dad says in private about Joe Biden. Si was wrongfully held by the TSA during his recent trip, and Martin confesses that he was happy to bail during that situation. Phillip watched Godwin nearly get his face wrecked by a pigeon, and John-David lets his gratitude and pride show while highlighting the challenges his son has faced in his young life.
