Parenting today feels overwhelming—and it's not your imagination. The latest Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Report reveals shocking truths about kids' mental health and shows us just how deep this childhood chronic disease crisis runs. Our children are carrying the weight of poor diet, chronic stress, environmental exposures, and endless screen time—and it's affecting not just their moods but their overall health. As parents, it's easy to wonder, “Is this just my child?” or “Am I doing something wrong?”Let me reassure you—it's not bad parenting, it's a dysregulated brain. In this episode, I'll walk you through what the report means for American children's health and, most importantly, share practical steps you can take to calm the brain first, build resilience, and protect your child in today's overstimulating world. Why are so many American children struggling with mental health?Parents are searching for answers because the numbers in the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Report are staggering:Teen depression has doubled in recent years.Suicide is now the second leading cause of death for teens, rising 62% since 2007.Loneliness is at epidemic levels—73% of young adults report feeling isolated.Neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD and autism continue to rise at alarming rates. These aren't just statistics from a government assessment. They represent the nation's health and, more importantly, our kids. The MAHA Commission—led by Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—noted that the potential drivers of this crisis include ultra processed foods, poor physical activity, environmental chemicals, and chronic stress. This isn't just a public health concern—it's a matter of national security when so many American children of the same age are struggling with preventable mental and physical health conditions. The Human Services Department and National Institutes call this the biggest children's health crisis in modern U.S. history.Key Takeaways:It's not bad parenting—it's a dysregulated brain. Behavior is communication, and we need to calm the brain first.Environmental chemicals, ultraprocessed foods, and chronic stress are fueling this crisis in American children's health.Over-reliance on medicine and medication isn't fixing outcomes. The root causes—nutrition, stress, sleep, environmental exposures, and screen time—must be addressed. What hidden drivers of kids' health problems should parents know about? The MAHA Report shines a light on what's fueling the rise in dysregulation, ADHD, anxiety, and depression in kids today:Poor diet: 70% of children's calories now come from ultra-processed foods, leaving their brains starved of the nutrients they need to focus, learn, and regulate emotions.Environmental exposures: Everyday chemicals—like pesticides and microplastics—interfere with hormones and raise risks for autism, ADHD, and other mental health struggles.Chronic stress & sleep loss: Exhausted kids can't bounce back; lack of rest is draining their resilience.Technology overuse: Children average nine hours of non-school screen time daily, and social media alone doubles the risk for anxiety and depression.Over-medicalization: Prescriptions for ADHD, anxiety, and depression keep rising, yet long-term outcomes aren't improving.

At just 13, he began experiencing motor tics, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and severe anxiety. By the time he was 17,  he was on over 40 different medications.   Ethan felt lost in a system that seemed more focused on prescribing medications than finding the root cause of his issues. He decided to take charge of his own health. Through extensive research, Ethan discovered PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcus), a condition that linked his neurological symptoms to a strep throat infection. Finally, he had an accurate diagnosis.  Part of Ethan's health plan was CBD, which he found to be a powerful anti-inflammatory. His experience led him to create Green Valley Nutrition, a company dedicated to providing high-quality CBD products for those seeking natural remedies for pain, anxiety, and sleep issues. A new JAMA study found that 84% of abortion prescriptions from Aid Access went to patients in states with bans, enabled by “shield laws” protecting telehealth providers across state lines. Provision rates were highest in underserved Southern and Midwestern counties, highlighting telemedicine's role in maintaining access. A Scientific Reports study showed that large language models for clinical use can be manipulated into giving unsafe answers through subtle “adversarial hallucination attacks,” with success rates over 95%. Finally, JAMA Ophthalmology reported GLP-1 agonists may slightly increase risk of sudden vision loss, though benefits still outweigh risks.

Dr. Tiffany Moon, anesthesiologist, entrepreneur, and author of "Joy Prescriptions," joins me for a candid conversation about the hidden struggles behind external success. After years of following the traditional achievement pathway elite schools, medical training, career advancement Dr. Moon found herself asking "is this it?" despite checking all the boxes society told her would lead to fulfillment. In this deeply personal episode, Dr. Moon shares her transformation from a people pleasing perfectionist to someone who prioritizes authentic joy and connection. She opens up about her challenging fertility journey with twins, the systemic barriers she faced as a part-time physician (including being denied promotion solely for working three days a week), and her controversial experience on Real Housewives of Dallas, where she faced racist harassment that ultimately led her to leave the show. Our conversation explores the unique pressures facing women in medicine, from cultural conditioning around achievement to the impossible myth of "having it all." Dr. Moon discusses her mid-career burnout, how she found creative outlets through entrepreneurship, and why she believes joy must be cultivated from within rather than sought externally. She also addresses the double edged sword of social media how it can build businesses and connections while also fueling dangerous comparisons and shares practical strategies for maintaining authentic relationships in an increasingly digital world. Highlights:The Achievement Paradox: Why following traditional success markers often leaves high achievers feeling empty and unfulfilled.Systemic Bias in Medicine: Research showing 75% of women physicians delay childbearing, with career penalties for part-time work.Cultural Conditioning: How Asian American upbringing around being "smart and obedient" creates lifelong people-pleasing patterns.Reality TV Racism: Dr. Moon's experience with harassment on Real Housewives of Dallas and learning when to walk away.Mental Health Stigma: The importance of seeking treatment for anxiety and depression, especially in medical culture.Social Media Strategy: Using platforms for business growth while avoiding the "comparison trap".Redefining Success: The difference between conditional happiness and sustainable inner Boundary Setting: Practical advice for saying no and valuing your worth as a professional.Get in Touch with Dr. Moon:WebsiteBook linkLeadHer Summit InstagramTikTokLinkedInGet in Touch with me:Website InstagramYoutube

As caregivers, we often pour out until there's nothing left—but what happens when the one collapsing is the caregiver herself? My longtime friend Nancy Comish joined me for a brutally honest conversation about her journey through caregiver burnout, medical overload, and physical decline. She was overmedicated, under-rested, and emotionally drowning. Her husband, Craig—who knows his way around a hospital system—raised the alarm. I echoed it later on her front porch. But Nancy made the call. She read the warnings on the prescriptions. She faced what those pills were doing to her. And then she did something most people don't: she changed. Nancy's story isn't about being rescued. It's about rescue through resolve. With courage, humor, and a clarity forged in pain, she chose life. She shed nearly 40 pounds, got off 15 medications, and took back her health and her soul. This is for every caregiver who's run out of gas and every loved one who doesn't know what to say. It's a story of conviction, love, tough truth—and the grace of starting again. “If you don't know what to say to a family caregiver, don't worry about it — I do!” - Peter Rosenberger A Caregiver's Companion - in bookstores 8/20/2025

Kurt Francom, Executive Director of Leading Saints, shares his thoughts on the unwritten order of things—a term popularized by Elder Boyd K. Packer in a BYU devotional in October 1996. This phrase has influenced leadership culture in the Church, often being used as a trump card to justify certain practices or norms that are not explicitly documented in church handbooks. Listen to a reading of the original devotional. Links Is Aspiring Wrong? Church Doctrine, Policy, & Leadership | An Interview with Anthony Sweat Y Religion: Defining Church Doctrine, with Michael Goodman The Role of Doubt and Faith | An Interview With Prof. Michael Goodman Share your thoughts in the Leading Saints community Read the transcript of this podcast Get 14-day access to the Core Leader Library Highlights Kurt explores the context of Elder Packer's talk, highlighting the challenges of leadership in the 1990s when handbooks were not publicly accessible. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the principles behind leadership practices rather than blindly adhering to unwritten rules that may not serve the best interests of the community. He outlines the ten unwritten orders of things mentioned by Elder Packer, assessing whether each principle is supported by the church handbook. While some of these principles align with current guidelines, others are not formally recognized, raising questions about their validity and application in modern leadership. Kurt encourages listeners to consider the implications of using the unwritten order of things as a means of manipulation or control, and advocates for a more open dialogue about leadership best practices, urging leaders to communicate their expectations clearly rather than relying on vague traditions. He invites listeners to engage in this conversation, share their experiences, and contribute to a culture of effective leadership where the church can more-effectively draw people to Christ. 00:02:47 - Context of Elder Packer's Talk 00:04:11 - The Unwritten Order of Things Explained 00:05:24 - Weaponization of the Unwritten Order 00:06:05 - Importance of Context in Leadership 00:07:51 - Changes in Handbook Accessibility 00:09:05 - Elder Packer's Teaching Style 00:10:08 - Challenges in Communicating Leadership Guidelines 00:11:22 - The Role of General Authorities in Leadership 00:12:03 - Misinterpretation of the Unwritten Order 00:13:40 - Elder Packer's Ten Unwritten Orders 00:14:01 - Analysis of Each Unwritten Order 00:19:05 - The Role of Personal Counsel in Leadership 00:20:30 - Observing Church Customs and Traditions 00:21:23 - Setting a Tone of Dignity in Meetings 00:22:06 - The Balance of Leadership and Followership 00:23:20 - Binding Nature of the Unwritten Order 00:24:03 - Current Unwritten Orders in Leadership 00:25:07 - The Tyranny of General Authority 00:26:20 - The Importance of Local Leadership Autonomy 00:27:34 - Principles vs. Prescriptions in Leadership 00:29:41 - Establishing Best Practices in Leadership 00:30:57 - Conclusion: Moving Beyond the Unwritten Order The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead.
