Kurt Francom, Executive Director of Leading Saints, shares his thoughts on the unwritten order of things—a term popularized by Elder Boyd K. Packer in a BYU devotional in October 1996. This phrase has influenced leadership culture in the Church, often being used as a trump card to justify certain practices or norms that are not explicitly documented in church handbooks. Listen to a reading of the original devotional. Links Is Aspiring Wrong? Church Doctrine, Policy, & Leadership | An Interview with Anthony Sweat Y Religion: Defining Church Doctrine, with Michael Goodman The Role of Doubt and Faith | An Interview With Prof. Michael Goodman Share your thoughts in the Leading Saints community Read the transcript of this podcast Get 14-day access to the Core Leader Library Highlights Kurt explores the context of Elder Packer's talk, highlighting the challenges of leadership in the 1990s when handbooks were not publicly accessible. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the principles behind leadership practices rather than blindly adhering to unwritten rules that may not serve the best interests of the community. He outlines the ten unwritten orders of things mentioned by Elder Packer, assessing whether each principle is supported by the church handbook. While some of these principles align with current guidelines, others are not formally recognized, raising questions about their validity and application in modern leadership. Kurt encourages listeners to consider the implications of using the unwritten order of things as a means of manipulation or control, and advocates for a more open dialogue about leadership best practices, urging leaders to communicate their expectations clearly rather than relying on vague traditions. He invites listeners to engage in this conversation, share their experiences, and contribute to a culture of effective leadership where the church can more-effectively draw people to Christ. 00:02:47 - Context of Elder Packer's Talk 00:04:11 - The Unwritten Order of Things Explained 00:05:24 - Weaponization of the Unwritten Order 00:06:05 - Importance of Context in Leadership 00:07:51 - Changes in Handbook Accessibility 00:09:05 - Elder Packer's Teaching Style 00:10:08 - Challenges in Communicating Leadership Guidelines 00:11:22 - The Role of General Authorities in Leadership 00:12:03 - Misinterpretation of the Unwritten Order 00:13:40 - Elder Packer's Ten Unwritten Orders 00:14:01 - Analysis of Each Unwritten Order 00:19:05 - The Role of Personal Counsel in Leadership 00:20:30 - Observing Church Customs and Traditions 00:21:23 - Setting a Tone of Dignity in Meetings 00:22:06 - The Balance of Leadership and Followership 00:23:20 - Binding Nature of the Unwritten Order 00:24:03 - Current Unwritten Orders in Leadership 00:25:07 - The Tyranny of General Authority 00:26:20 - The Importance of Local Leadership Autonomy 00:27:34 - Principles vs. Prescriptions in Leadership 00:29:41 - Establishing Best Practices in Leadership 00:30:57 - Conclusion: Moving Beyond the Unwritten Order The award-winning Leading Saints Podcast is one of the top independent Latter-day Saints podcasts as part of nonprofit Leading Saints' mission to help Latter-day Saints be better prepared to lead. The Temple of Surf Podcast – This Week's Guest: Jeff “Doc” Lausch of Surf Prescriptions This week on The Temple of Surf Podcast, we welcome one of the most innovative minds in surfboard shaping, Jeff “Doc” Lausch, the legendary founder of Surf Prescriptions. With a career spanning over four decades, Doc is known not just for pushing the boundaries of surfboard design, but for injecting punk rock energy, fearless experimentation, and personal creativity into every board that leaves his shaping room. From the vibrant surf scene of Huntington Beach in the ‘80s and ‘90s to the global stage of competitive surfing, Surf Prescriptions has always stood out as a brand that blends high performance with bold individuality. Doc's boards have been ridden by some of the most radical surfers of all time and many underground legends whose careers were shaped—literally and figuratively—by his work. In this episode, we dive into Jeff's incredible journey: how he got started in shaping, the philosophy behind Surf Prescriptions, his influences in both art and surfing, and what it means to stay authentic in an industry that constantly shifts with trends. We also discuss the evolution of surf culture, the role of experimentation in board design, and why some of the most unforgettable rides happen on the most unorthodox shapes. Whether you're a surfboard design geek, a fan of 1980s surf punk culture, or just love stories from the heart of the shaping bay, this episode is a must-listen. Jeff shares candid insights on staying true to your vision, the connection between artist and athlete, and the value of trusting intuition over convention.

Most people easily forget how devastating some childhood illnesses were. Before the measles vaccine was developed in the early 1960s, 2 1/2 million people died of measles every year in the world.” Schneebaum advises parents who are hesitant to vaccinate to talk to their pediatrician about their concerns and approach the subject with an open mind and an interest in learning. Ron Schneebaum spent 40 years as a primary care pediatrician. He also served in the clinical faculty at Dartmouth College's Geisel School of Medicine. During his career he regularly noted the power and importance of love for the human psyche. As we age, prescriptions become a fact of life. And, of course, most people complain about the rising cost of these medications. While I'm ranting today, it has nothing to do with money. My gripe is the hassle of filling them. Years ago, the doctor would write up what we needed on a piece of paper, we'd take it to the pharmacy, wait a bit, and they'd hand us our medication and send us on our way. But today, technology has changed everything, supposedly for the better. But the system rarely speeds things up. There has to be a better system. And lowering prices wouldn't hurt either... Journalist and author Julia Hotz joins Ginny Yurich to discuss her groundbreaking book, The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement, Nature, Art, Service, and Belonging. In this conversation, Julia shares how doctors around the world are writing prescriptions that don't come from a pharmacy—like a group bike ride, a painting class, or even fishing. These five powerful, research-backed “social prescriptions” are helping people overcome depression, anxiety, addiction, chronic illness, and loneliness. Together, Ginny and Julia explore the science behind these interventions, the global movement toward social prescribing, and how we can begin writing our own prescriptions for joy, connection, and well-being—right where we are. This episode is full of hope, practical insight, and a fresh look at what it really means to be healthy. ** Get your copy of The Connection Cure here Learn more about Julia and all she has to offer here Learn more about your ad choices. How did a marketing campaign lead to one of the worst public health disasters in American history? In this episode, I investigate the rise and fall of the Sackler family, the pharmaceutical empire they built, and the marketing tactics that got millions addicted to opioids. You'll learn: How reframing turned OxyContin from a last resort into a “safe” everyday drug. Why a vague letter (not a study) became the foundation for Purdue's 1% addiction claim. How the Sacklers used doctors, pain groups, and celebrities to exploit authority bias. Why repeating a false claim makes it more believable (feat. the mere exposure effect). How behavioural science helped sell a deadly drug—and what we can learn from it. --- Shatterproof non-profit: https://shatterproof.org/ Empire of Pain: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/612861/empire-of-pain-by-patrick-radden-keefe/ Sign up to my newsletter: https://www.nudgepodcast.com/mailing-list Connect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/phill-agnew-22213187/ Watch Nudge on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@nudgepodcast/ --- Sources: ABC News. Send us a textA recent article in CMAJ entitled Effect of emergency department opioid prescribing on health outcomes examines a key concern facing many clinicians: can a single opioid prescription for acute pain lead to long-term harm? This study aimed to clarify the risks and inform safer prescribing practices.Dr. Grant Innes, the study's senior author, analyzed more than a decade of data from Alberta emergency departments to compare outcomes between patients who did and did not receive an opioid prescription. The study found no significant difference in rates of overdose, opioid use disorder, or death—challenging widely held fears about short-term opioid use. Innes notes that older and opioid-naive patients may be more vulnerable to adverse outcomes and encourages a balanced approach to pain management.Dr. Hance Clarke, director of pain services at Toronto General Hospital, emphasizes the importance of structured follow-up and monitoring, especially for patients at higher risk of persistent use. He outlines practical strategies for safe prescribing and highlights underused and emerging alternatives, including ketamine, IV lidocaine, nerve blocks, and sodium channel blockers now in development. Clarke warns against “opioid phobia” and calls for individualized care supported by systems that can detect early warning signs. The guests encourage physicians to not avoid prescribing opioids when clinically indicated, particularly in cases of severe acute pain. With thoughtful screening and mechanisms for follow-up, opioids can be relatively safe and effective. The goal is not zero prescribing, but safer, smarter prescribing.Join us as we explore medical solutions that address the urgent need to change healthcare. Join us on an enlightening journey with award-winning author and journalist Julia Hotz, who shares her insights into the world of social prescribing.
