Today we celebrate our 50th podcast. We also take the time to discuss the recent format changes we have implemented. Two months ago we went from a 30-40 minute interview with Lenders and business owners to a 10-minute discussion about a specific topic. We have also expanded our universe of guests and areas of interest. In the future, we will examine business topics that will help owners and management get to the next level and then ultimately to their desired final business outcome. So with that in mind I am happy to tell you that next months topic will be on when you should start planning your exit. More details to follow shortly. Please keep emailing us your questions. Today we tackle an issue that is causing headaches for companies when they go to get new financing. That is a UCC filing popping up that the business owner was not aware of. Discuss why these UCC's are being filed and give some advice on how to fix the problem. Please keep emailing us your questions. Today we welcome Ross Mcclain of Rapid Business Systems to the podcast. Ross explains to us what a feasibility study is, and the importance of having a credentialed firm do the study so that the bank will accept it and what is involved in it. Ross gives us some highlights of feasibility studies. He gives us some examples of details they have discovered, that have been beneficial to the company being evaluated under the feasibility study. Things like pulling building permits that have shown a competitor was already building a business right down the street from where they were going. A discovery like that could save millions. Ross shows why borrowers, particularly startups, want to seriously consider a feasibility study whether the bank requires it or not. Please keep emailing us your questions. In this month's Funding University Podcast, we're focusing on non-bank SBA lenders and speaking with Amy Perrella of Harvest Small Business Finance. As Amy and I discuss, there are advantages of working with a non-bank lender because their lending guidelines tend to differ from the traditional banking lender, even though both are regulated. Non-bank lenders don't deal with deposits and credit cards which helps them differ from the traditional bank model and as a result, they have different lending requirements. This means that where a bank might say no to your SBA loan, a non-bank lender might be able to say yes because they evaluate your situation using a different criteria. Both banking and non-banking lenders have their pros and cons, but the key is finding the right kind of lender to best meet your needs. In my conversation with Amy, we touched on some big differences between the different types of lenders and discussed important points for you to consider as you begin to seek out a lender. As you'll hear, Amy is really well-informed and has a wealth of knowledge about SBA lending. She shares some valuable tips that can help you avoid making costly mistakes. My thanks to Amy Perrella for sharing her time and insights with us this month. Please keep emailing us your questions. If you have a question you'd like to submit, you can send it to info@thefundinguniversity.com and we'll do our best to have it answered in a future podcast. Take care and we'll be back next month.
Have you noticed that we're just now at the beginning of March and we are already seeing a flurry of mergers being announced across the country? The pattern is evident on a national, regional, and local level. The reason we're seeing the increase in M&A activity is because in 2023 money stayed on the sidelines as financial executives waited to see how the Fed would act on interest rates. Most economists have been split between an impending recession or the US economy experiencing a soft landing, but the demands of the market are pushing companies to consolidate to maintain growth and competitive advantage. Companies have waited as long as they can, but in reality, it's the demands of the customers that are driving this activity because the consumer is always looking for better options. That's why I have asked Craig Stacy to join us. Craig is, the Managing Director of Sunbelt Business Advisors, who specializes in the sale and acquisition of companies. Craig is one of the most knowledgeable M&A experts in North America and his take on the recent spate of consolidation announcements is fascinating. There is always more to the deal than meets the eye and Craig brings a very insightful perspective as to why companies merge and more importantly, how to make sure you've got the right partner to merge with. Craig has agreed to preview the next Fundings Strategies Webinar airing this Thursday, March 7th entitled 2024 the year of M&A. In this month's podcast, we're going to focus on something different. I'd like to talk about Truth & Accountability with Lenders. It's incredibly important you communicate with your lender about your finances not only in times when finances are tight but in times when things are going well. Your lender wants you to be successful because they have a vested interest in your repayment, but even beyond that, your lender may have the ability to help you get things back on track during a rough patch. When things are going well, that's the perfect time to talk to your lender about expansion, M&A, or even putting plans in place to prepare for the possibility of a downturn. Your lender should be your champion and a resource to help your business be successful, but it all comes down to communication. Like in any relationship, you've got be open about what's working, what's not working, and what you can do to improve that line of communication. As you know, business success is all about communication. I hope you enjoy this month's podcast and thank you for the steady stream of questions and suggestions. If you have a question you'd like answered in our podcast, please email us at info@thefundinguniversity.com. The Funding University team and I look forward to hearing from you.

In this month's podcast, we're going to look at two common situations with SBA loans, both of which can cause business owners some stress when it comes time to gain access to more working capital. We'll explore what you need to know about the SBA 7A and EIDL programs, options to work within the system to help you get more capital, and what you need to know so you can avoid costly mistakes. The SBA programs have some quirks and if you're not aware of all the issues, getting the money your business needs can be a lot more difficult than you'd imagine. I hope you find this information valuable and if you find yourself in one of these SBA entanglements, I encourage you to get with an experienced funding professional to help you develop strategies. In this month's Funding University podcast, I opted to forgo having a guest because there's an old economic term being discussed most people don't know anything about: Stagflation. There aren't many experienced CFO or finance professionals still around who have tussled with stagflation. The last time the US experienced stagflation was in 1973 and it puts the Fed in a tricky situation, especially with the possibility of a recession. As a funding professional and a CPA, I wanted to share some good planning tips for our listeners about how to prepare for potential economic changes, how to protect capital liquidity, and what this uncertainty means to you today. Admittedly, I had to dust off some of my old accounting books for this one, but if stagflation emerges in our current environment, a solid pre-emptive plan is your company's best defense. I encourage all of you to get with your lenders to discuss options before rates creep higher. Be sure to subscribe to our monthly Funding University newsletter here. Joining me this month on the Funding University Podcast is nationally recognized speaker and author Mike Scott. Mike is an authority on accountability in the workplace and his new course on “Meeting Purpose” discusses the control of meetings. Mike makes the observation that when you're in a meeting, not only should the meeting have a clearly defined purpose, but it should have an agenda, which in itself is a powerful tool. When it comes to funding, most people think the lender controls the meeting, but as is pointed out in the podcast, the borrower can have their own meeting agenda, which in turn can become a powerful tool in negotiations. Mike Scott is the go to accountability expert for hundreds of companies and when Mike sees a point of leverage, he loves to share his insights. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the US Government created EIDL loans through the SBA, which were designed for small businesses. With low-interest rates and 30-year terms, these loans were created to help small businesses stay afloat during the pandemic's economic slowdown. The loans required the SBA to put a perfected security interest lien in place against a company's assets, meaning no other lender could use your company's assets as collateral. This creates a problem when you need more funding from other sources. Join Seth Block as he discusses strategies to keep your SBA loan in place while renegotiating your SBA-encumbered assets to help you grow. Tune in as Seth discusses the history behind the current interest rate hikes and offers a few ways businesses can manage the impact to their bottom line. Oftentimes, borrowers aren't aware that lending interest rates are a direct result of the current prime interest rate, which is based on the federal funds rate. If the prime rate climbs, your loan rate will go up as well. Seth takes a look at the history of the prime rate from the 1980s through 2022 and offers insight on how prime may affect future loan rates. As a business owner, how can you manage these higher rates? Seth offers three ways to recoup funds to keep your business profitable. Lee Haskin joins us in this month's Funding University podcast and shares a fascinating historical perspective and real world case study about using an inventory loan with a factoring facility. His experience in inventory and revolving lines of credit that works with a factor or receivable lenders is amazing. Lee is the founder of Crossroads Financial, established in 2007, which satisfied a real need in the inventory lending space. The company provides funding against inventory, which helps avoids many of the pitfalls that can lead to insolvency or bankruptcy. In our conversation, Lee goes into great detail about how factoring and inventory lending work, valuation determination, and the criteria lenders are looking for from borrowers. His insights are detailed, useful, and easy to understand. I think you'll agree that Lee brings a wealth of knowledge about how to leverage your assets and how to determine what they're really worth. This acquisition delivered assets to offset supply chain issues during the Pandemic while allowing the company to restructure and meet customer needs without missing a beat. Bob also discusses the journey he went on to finance the transaction. Starting with exploring a quick equity raise or mezzanine financing. His goal was to find a lender that had the best synergies as they integrate the acquisition into American Aerospace. They focused on the growth plan and the verticals which could be served/benefited. Bob decided that RiverRidge was the lender that made sense for American Aerospace. About The Funding University: The mission of The Funding University to Enable Funding around the world.
