If you have ever dreamed of being a rock-n-roll star, this episode is gonna light you up. Annie Davis decided, in her mid-40s, that she wanted to become a musician. So, in the middle of the pandemic, she began taking lessons and taught herself how to play drums and guitar from scratch. Music has always been in her DNA. As a kid, she immersed herself in it both personally and educationally. Her instrument at the time was the trumpet. But here comes that all too familiar story that we've been told - a music degree wasn't going to get her anywhere in life. It wasn't a "real career." So, she ended up learning the sciences because this music nerd was also a biology nerd. She got her bachelor's degree in Human Biology and she eventually found her way to a Doctorate in Chiropractic. It was while she was pursuing her education that she was also immersing herself in a love of athletics, including running mountain biking, triathlon, and adventure racing. And, because of some bad advice that she received from an Orthopedist, she knew that she wanted to help others, which is why she picked up, moved her stuff to Austin, Texas, and opened her own practice called RunLab, where for the past 10 years, she has helped now 1000s of runners stay active in the game of life. She's now hustling to build another following with her rock band, Trashy Annie. As she says on her website, "Starting an original rock band at the age of 44 during a worldwide pandemic was a surreal experience, to say the least." But in just three years, she was honored as the CMA of Texas Americana Artist of the Year, she was signed to a record label, and she's about to release her full-length, first rock-n-roll record on May 19, 2023. It is never too late to be the person that you dreamed of being when you were young. Dr. Anh Bui ran in high school and at the collegiate level where she found herself injured often. She grew up in San Leandro, CA and was raised in a first-generation immigrant family. San Leandro was a melting pot of low-to-median income households with pockets of crime, and under-resourced and underprivileged youth. Dr. Bui recalls few resources being available to her to manage running injuries and was always in the position to run through pain or sit out and “rest” the entire season. She competed in cross country and track at UC San Diego where her injuries continued to manifest, and while she had access to athletic trainers, she was never exposed to physical therapists for long-term injury prevention. While studying abroad at the Australian Institute of Sport—the Aussie equivalent of US Olympic Training Centers—she became interested in physiology, human performance and biomechanics. While studying under world-renowned exercise physiologists, Dr. Bui knew right away that she wanted to work with endurance athletes. Specifically to correct poor movement patterns and prevent injury. Dr. Bui refers to physical therapy as her second career in life, as her first was in research and academia. After earning her Bachelors of Science in biology at UC San Diego, she worked as a neuroscience research associate at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. She studied neurodegenerative disease, specifically Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). While shadowing a physician and physical therapist who worked with ALS patients, Dr. Bui realized she wanted to become a physical therapist; she wanted to help patients restore function and mobility. Additionally, her background in research and academia compels her to utilize evidence-based research to her practice. Dr. Bui completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy at Columbia University in NYC. She participated in unique electives including advanced orthopedics, management of the running athlete, and women's health. She held leadership roles at Columbia's RunLab clinic, performing running gait evaluations and providing individualized exercise programs to high-level runners. Dr. Bui's favorite aspect of RunLab was employing running gait analysis technology to help runners prevent injury and improve performance. She continued to add to her running gait analysis repertoire during her sports residency in Boulder, CO, which placed her in the mecca of endurance athletes On the running front, you can find Dr. Bui logging tons of miles around the Bay Area. She is coached remotely by Boulder Underground and continues to race in sub-elite 5k- marathon races. Learn more at www.runresilientlydpt.com. How often do we set out to achieve something that pushes us beyond our limits - and even more so, how often do we put off doing something at the risk of 'failure'? For Benn & Vlad, their passion and obsession is in ultra running. So when goal races got pushed aside during 2020 and the impacts of Covid, they shifted their attendtion to personal events that both stretched beyond their known limits. Benn set out to complete the Great North Walk of 276km in the fastest known time; while Vlad entered the 240km Coast2Kosci not just to complete or win, but for the fastest known time. However, for both, things didn't go to plan. So what happens when our big goals don't end in success and celebration? What happens when we push beyond our limits and fall short? Here you get the opportunity to sit in on the stories that so often get untold, and we are so grateful to Benn and Vlad for being so brave in sharing their vulnerabilities in this episode. Enjoy!
