    Ivy Insights

The Rambling Runner Podcast has quickly become one of my favorite running podcasts. Hosted by Matt, this show features a diverse range of guests with fascinating stories and unique challenges. Many of these guests are amateurs, making them relatable yet inspiring with their extraordinary backgrounds. I also appreciate how Matt shares his own triumphs and struggles in training, creating a relatable connection with listeners who often face the eternal debate of prioritizing long runs or household chores.

One of the best aspects of The Rambling Runner Podcast is the eclectic mix of guests that Matt brings on the show. From dedicated amateur runners to professionals in the field, each interview offers valuable insights and perspectives. The solo episodes where Matt reflects on his own running journey are also highly enjoyable and introspective. What sets this podcast apart is its focus on everyday people chasing big running goals while balancing various responsibilities in life. It's truly motivating to hear about ordinary individuals achieving extraordinary feats in the running space.

While The Rambling Runner Podcast excels at featuring amateur runners and providing relatable content, some may feel that the discussions about professional runners' recent races can be less engaging. However, these exceptions are few and do not detract from the overall appeal of the podcast.

In conclusion, The Rambling Runner Podcast is a must-listen for any running enthusiast. Matt's enthusiasm and genuine interest in his guests make for an enjoyable listening experience. Whether you're looking for practical advice or inspiring stories, this podcast has something for everyone. Give it a listen and be prepared to be inspired to push your own running boundaries!

#680 - Henry Abbott: The New Science of Injury-Free Athletic Performance

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 25, 2025 48:34

In this conversation, Henry Abbott discusses his transition from sports media to writing a book on injury prevention, "Ballistic: The New Science of Injury-Free Athletic Performance." Blending cutting-edge science with gripping storytelling, award-winning data journalist and competitive amateur athlete Henry Abbott reveals that we are on the cusp of a new era in sports medicine, built around the science of ballistic movements―leaping and landing―and the unique fingerprint of your body's physics. Abbott's inspiring narrative tells the story of sports scientist Dr. Marcus Elliott and the Peak Performance Project (P3), who use technology to study how athletes move and why they get hurt. Applying machine learning and lessons from biomechanics, medicine, and physiology, doctors at P3 can now detect elevated risk of an ACL tear or a pulled hamstring like an echocardiogram can see warning signs of a heart attack. Their data-driven findings are full of surprises. Your body's most important defense against knee and ankle injuries are the little-known muscles in the lower leg and hip area, which typical workouts rarely target. Similarly, the glutes―not the core―do the most to prevent back pain. Transformative benefits flow from training underappreciated kinds of athleticism like rotation, deceleration, and relaxation. Most of all, science shows that the best athletes don't avoid ballistics―they master them. Through riveting stories of elite athletes overcoming injuries and pushing themselves to the limit, Abbott presents an evidence-based case for intervening early to protect our bodies. And he suggests that we can all harness the science of ballistic movement not just to run fast or jump high but to move with joy and lead fulfilling athletic lives. Norway has long stacked the field with champions in sports like Nordic skiing and sailing, but a new generation of athletes has arrived on the endurance scene, smashing records and grabbing medals in running, cycling, and triathlon. Sports journalist Brad Culp unpacks the rise of the Norwegian method and its meticulous scientific protocols, which upend long-held beliefs about training and performance. With its rugged terrain and harsh weather, Norway has a way of hardening competitors for any test. Culp explores the how the Scandinavian culture imbues a unique biopsychosocial approach to performance. He also introduces the athletes, coaches, and scientists who are shaking up the world of endurance sports. Their secret? Plenty of volume at low intensity, punctuated with hard-fought double-threshold workouts, which seems to turn workhorses into winners—they know when to hold back and when to go all-out. The Norwegian Method is a real-life story of how discipline and determination can be employed to overcome seemingly impossible odds and achieve breakthrough performances. One of the main things we learned during the Summer Olympics is the power of "and," the process of embracing that word, and removing the false barriers that "or" creates in any endeavor that we are trying to achieve great things. Sponsors ASICS - Check out my favorite footwear brand, and the new Metaspeed Sky and Edge Paris racers that are out and they are amazing! Check them out at www.asics.com. SAYSKY - What makes SAYSKY different from other apparel brands is our will to support sub-elite athletes; those whom we call “everyday heroes” – people who are joggling work, friends, and family, but still have the time and dedication to train hard and have fun along the way. This mentality is what SAYSKY celebrates and something our community can relate to. Also, their gear is insanely durable and will last for years and years.
