On this episode of the Healthy, Wealthy, and Smart podcast, Dr. Jennifer Stevens-Lapsley and Dr. Kory Zimney, underscored the crucial role clinicians play in influencing the APTA research agenda. They emphasized that clinicians should be invested in the research agenda as it directly impacts their practice and the well-being of their patients. Here are key takeaways from the episode on how clinicians can actively contribute to the APTA research agenda: 1. Data Collection: Clinicians are encouraged to start gathering outcomes data in their clinical settings. This data serves as a valuable resource for addressing research inquiries and refining clinical practices. By systematically collecting data on patient outcomes, clinicians can bolster the evidence base, guiding decision-making at both individual patient levels and broader research endeavors. 2. Questioning: Clinicians are uniquely positioned to identify knowledge gaps and areas requiring further research. By posing questions based on their clinical experiences, clinicians can help shape research priorities and initiate meaningful research projects. Cultivating a curious mindset can lead to the formulation of research questions that tackle real-world clinical challenges. 3. Collaboration with Researchers: Collaboration between clinicians and researchers is pivotal for advancing the field of physical therapy. Clinicians can collaborate with researchers by sharing clinical insights, participating in research studies, and engaging in discussions on research findings. Through joint efforts, clinicians and researchers can ensure that research remains relevant, practical, and directly applicable to clinical settings. 4. Networking and Relationship Building: Clinicians are urged to network with researchers, academic institutions, and other healthcare professionals to foster collaborations and knowledge exchange. Establishing relationships with researchers can provide clinicians with opportunities to contribute to research projects, access resources, and stay abreast of the latest research developments in physical therapy. 5. Promoting Evidence-Based Practice: Physical therapists are an evidence-based profession who rely on research to inform their clinical interventions. By actively engaging with the APTA research agenda and participating in research endeavors, clinicians can enhance the quality of care they deliver and contribute to the advancement of the profession. It's great to be here with you. Thanks for joining. In this episode, we are discussing a new assessment tool to guide behavior change, which is called The Physical Therapy Healthy Lifestyle Appraisal. It was developed by Dr. MarySue Ingman, who you will meet in a couple of moments. This is the first validated assessment tool for a physical therapy practice, where we can look at nutrition, physical activity, stress, sleep, and tobacco use. What I like and appreciate about this tool is that it's quick, easy, fits well into physical therapist practice, and especially if you are using integrative or lifestyle medicine approaches to treat chronic pain or chronic disease management. Let me share a little bit about our guest. Dr. MarySue Ingman is an Associate Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her research interests include the role of a physical therapist, health promotion, and clinical practice. She's published studies on motivational interviewing and the role of physical therapists in health promotion and wellness. In this episode, you will learn a lot about counseling, assessment, and the science of behavior change. In fact, this episode is a sneak peek into some work that all of us have been working on for years. Some of you may know that I co-edited a textbook. That textbook is called Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine in Physical Therapy. My co-editor was another physical therapist, who you might know, whose name is Dr. Ginger Garner. In that textbook, we invited about 40 physical therapy professionals, researchers, and educators, to contribute to this book on Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine in Physical Therapy. Chapter 3 in this textbook, which is called Coaching, Counseling, and the Science of Behavior Change, was written by MarySue and her colleague, Dr. Janet Bezner, a Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Texas State University. That textbook is on track to come out soon. We are excited because we think that this will be useful for physical therapy educators, as well as clinicians who are using integrative and lifestyle medicine in physical therapy. As I mentioned, Chapter 3 is written by MarySue, where we go into Coaching, Counseling, and the Science of Behavior Change, which we will discuss in this episode. Without further ado, let's begin and learn about the Physical Therapy Healthy Lifestyle Appraisal and meet Dr. MarySue Ingman. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Join me this week as I interview the brilliant, hilarious, and empowering, Dr. Mary Hausler. Dr. Mary Hausler (she/her/hers) is a certified Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She graduated from the University of Iowa Doctorate of Physical Therapy Program and immediately entered into the pelvic health world serving all genders. She is passionate about eliminating shame and upholding the dignity of patients currently living with pelvic floor issues including incontinence, pelvic pain, bowel issues, pain with sex, postpartum recovery and many more! Mary is adamant about creating a safe space in her clinic for all bodies and is additionally fighting the "lose weight" response most experience in medicine and specifically the physical therapy realm. In this episode we discuss... - what the pelvic floor is and all about it's role and function is in the body - the connection between the pelvic floor and mental health - what a pelvic floor exam looks like - what can cause leaking - how we know if our pelvic floor is relaxed - Mary's experience as a plus sized PT and how it has impacted the way she practices - weight and pain - so much more!
